  1. Oh man I am excited to watch that after this contest is over so it doesn't influence any of my songs.
  2. The first two, Lady in the Water and Excalibur, had some pretty substantial changes made, the rest had some minimal production changes made after each round was over and I realized what the faults were.
  3. I am really glad to see this thread come out to this kind of conclusion and I wish Shnabubula and anyone else who makes chiptunes the best of luck with setting a precedent and leading the standards to a brighter future. *_*
  4. DJP you control the spice, you control the rules and laws of OCR. Surely you realize that this civil war against chiptunes and the discrimination against them is entirely unfair. We're not talking any standard chiptune, someone brought up which is above and beyond the average offering you would get for chiptune. People keep trying to say "half-assed" as an example or excuse for blocking chip, but that is not the example, the example is and it is not half-assed nor does it sound bad.You control the spice and if you wanted to say "Yes chiptunes, NO midi files, NO covers or mashups" then that's your call. Just because you allow chiptunes doesn't mean you have to allow everything. The people who may be clamoring for straight covers don't even use the OCR Site, they are all on Youtube, disliking the videos. Here's another example of amazing, not half-assed Chiptune: http://mazedude.bandcamp.com/track/cohens-8-bit-masterpiece-bioshock The site will miss out on these amazing works of art because of some arbitrary rule... And the misguided belief that chiptune production is "bad". I've fiddled with chiptune sounds in a couple remixes and they were quite loud, with a very clean tone that was easy to fit into a mix. Unlike 90% of instrumentation in the world. z___z
  5. Yes. Splash Woman mixed with another theme, or in the case of Sweet Wet Nectar, 4 other themes. But clearly Ivana focus on the Splash woman aspect of it THANKS GUYS IT IS GONNA BE TONS OF FUN, GRAB A TOWEL AND GET READY FOR -- THE WETTENING! in a few days
  6. It's worth some real consideration I think. If someone made a mix that had only mellotron sounds, would it pass? Judges may say mellotrons are "low quality samples", but mellotrons are incredibly expensive and highly sought after for music, as far back as what... the 50s? They have a distinct sound that can be used in pretty much any genre... I'm not trying to compare mellotrons to chiptunes by any means, but as far as OCR goes I'd like to know where they draw the line. Is someone going to reply "It doesn't matter if you spent $500,000 for a mellotron, I don't think it sounds good enough! It has no 'articulations'!" Here is an example of what I would call mellotron music, although it does have vocals and some subdued percussion. I know it's not about "how much samples cost", but a judge said LA Scoring Strings was low quality samples in a recent song of mine that got no'd, so it'd be cool to know where the line is drawn with stuff... goodnight for now.
  7. There IS a distinct lack of Nekofrog original music. It'd be cool to see you write something original and substantial in that regard. But, adios.
  8. Same, I am sorry if I came across as heated to anyone. I was just trying to learn more, share some opinions, and if I was too forceful I apologize. You replied to everything I said in this thread as if you were talking to me directly with many of your posts! Please refer to the first thing I said up there at the top ^^^ If I thought there was any hope of a chiptune passing, I would certainly try to make one for OCR.. even though trackers are beyond my comprehension.. and I'm sure others would too, so that doesn't reaaaaaally prove anything. That was great!
  9. It couldn't really, because those are not 'arrangements' in the ocr sense. Why is OCR staff always trying to push people away?
  10. Completely agree. That seemed like an ok idea in 1999 but times have changed, along with music, the site, hopefully the site again (new site version!), etc. It makes 0 sense to cling to a rule made because there were 'other sites at the time' that doesn't even really apply today.
  11. If the judges enjoy the chiptune and its arrangement, and the vgm fans enjoy it, and chiptune is accepted as a legitimate form of music and art, then what's the point of denying it over some arbitrary and subjective opinion of whether the production is "good" or "bad"? What is at the core of the discrimination against chiptunes, because there are a lot of other genres that are subjectively pretty terrible, some of which even get DP'ed. Some of the judges have said mellotrons are "low quality samples" with "no articulations"
  12. There's no point arguing over semitics. The fact of the matter is, you said "There are possible cases to circumvent the rule, they just haven't turned up." This is false. If Shna can't pass with Espergirl 2A03 then no chiptune will ever pass. On the other hand, I am eagerly anticipating Shnabubula's NES Jamz and I think there's a chiptune/solo piano combo on it that passed the panel. So we'll see when that comes around. Apparently you can't have chiptune by itself, but chiptune and lead kazoo? This is why I mentioned that OCR hasn't established chiptune standards. Because it's a factual statement. Sure, plain chiptune = always no. But chiptune with piano can be a yes. What else can you combine with chiptune to get a yes? Only piano? Can it be chiptune and vocal? The standards of chiptunes on OCR have yet to be defined. dubstep
  13. The methods for recording Gregorian chant onto audible media and the quality of those recordings has changed in the last 700 years. Are you saying that if someone made a Gregorian chant or a "choir" remix that it wouldn't be accepted?
  14. It's ironic that the site is against chiptune production when chiptune production is just about the only type of production that is fairly consistent over time. Recording quality of organic instruments degrades the farther back you go, and even people who remix on OCR can make huge strides in recording quality over the course of a year or two. I'd point at myself as an example. z_z And Guifrog's recent mixpost is great but is lacking in a lot of sample/production areas. Whereas Espergirl 2A03. Still sounds incredible. Stands the test of time. Also how can you celebrate vgm as an art form while barring the format it is derived from? This thread is now about OCR Standards.

  16. Halc / Ben Briggs / ProtoDome = YES Normal chiptune = NO Normal chiptune combined with solo piano = N... wait, what? YES? OCR has yet to really establish chiptune standards.
