Not 100% sure, but I think you could make it(or something very similar) by using a glockenspiel VST with some reverb alongside a gated synth. At least that's what my ears are telling me. I'm not sure exactly how you'd do it, though. If I get some time I'll mess around and see what I can come up with. Synths aren't really my strong point though.

The Splattershot Jr actually seems pretty solid for turf wars. Nice fire rate, nice damage and the spread helps you ink more of the map. Plus, the Bubble special really helps you deal with anything. Nice to have if you get caught in a Killer Wail. I'm preferring the Inkbrush right now though. It doesn't cover as much as the roller, but I love the faster playstyle and the Sprinker grenades.

A lot of it will depend on the VSTi. If it sounds like MIDI it'll mostly sound like MIDI. Depending on the instrument you can make them sound better, but not necessarily realistic. Here's a few suggestions: 1) Adjust the velocity of each note to an appropriate level. This is especially important with percussion(specifically snare drums) unless you're aiming for that rapid-fire bullet percussion sound. Some samples(usually the higher end ones) also have velocity layers and adjust their sound based on the velocity, so keep that in mind as well. 2) Make use of any articulations the instrument has. Orchestral VSTs tend to include sustain and staccato variations, and even sectional and solo options. Similarly, guitars might have options for chords or solo. If that's the case, use the appropriate version to get the sound you want. If you find an instrument's attack hits too hard and there are no options to change it, you can adjust the volume and make a "fade-in" effect on each note to help mask it. 3) Study the instruments you're sampling. Learn how they work and what they can and can't do. Try to stick to realistic octave ranges. I'm really not an expert on this, but hopefully that helps out a bit.

Think I'll pick this up. It looks pretty damn fun. Edit: Ok, yeah. Best game ever. I'm officially addicted.

So I originally made this for MnP#22 a while back. I'd intended to revisit and touch it up, but life had other plans for me and I never really got around to it. Almost a year later and I've decided to go back to it(and several other unfinished or unpolished pieces) and fix them up. https://soundcloud.com/katallen-12/serdian-memories I haven't done much to it yet. I gave it a bit of a boost in volume(it was really quiet), but I still need to touch up the arrangement and articulation. The percussion is another area I'm looking at. The drum kit that comes in is more or less how I wanted the arrangement to go, but at the same time I know it's a bit out of place in a primarily orchestral piece. Any thoughts? Opinions? Critique?

Personally, I've always tried to keep my tracks in the -18 to -24db range before doing anything with them, and I shoot for a peak of around -5db before any further EQing. I've never really worried about limiters because the peak db is rarely anywhere close to clipping. That being said, my tracks have always been quiet(moreso than they should be, maybe), so I've recently been using limiters and pushing the volume a bit higher. I haven't really messed with compression, though. I like to have a nice dynamic range, and compression often takes my music's natural soft-loud dynamic shifts and squashes them flat. I'm not really against using limiters and compression. I think they're great tools for making audio sound as good as possible as long as you don't overuse them. I use one of those cheap Android-based phones as a portable MP3 player. About $20 for one, use a large micro-SD card for storage and has a headphone port. Some of them have some OK leveling options by default, and there are quite a few equalizer apps available. Beats the hell out of most MP3 players in both cost and function.

Oh man, so many ideas. I may actually get in on this one. Time to bust out the midi keyboard!

Regarding the percussion, that's my fault really. I'm using two primary samples for it - The first is the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, which is where you're hearing the more distant instruments. It's used for most of the percussion, really. The second(which does sound a bit dry) is from DrumMic'a and is used for most of the drum kit. I'm looking into other options that would blend with it better, but I think a little more mixing would fix it for the most part. The tambourine, at least, should be an easy fix and I think a few more volume adjustments on all of the SSO instruments would help out. As for the acoustics, that's in need of some work. It was recorded on a Martin acoustic/electric and much of that is just how it's going to sound, but I can certainly touch it up. I may try another recording on some of the muddier parts. Thanks for the feedback - I'm still pretty new to anything outside of recording(and still learning in that area, too), so every bit helps. I'm glad the arrangement was enjoyable, at least. -
If you're new to remixing in general, I'd suggest the Meat and Potatoes compo(MnP). It's usually got a couple weeks on the deadline and is all about conservative mixing. Speaking from personal experience, it's a great place to start if you don't have a ton of time but still want to improve and get involved. Updated. EQ'd a bit, with some minor instrumentation changes and volume adjustments. I think it's just about finished, although I'm still considering the length of the song. Any feedback would be appreciated. -
A little more searching around, and I think this might be a little closer. Certainly closer to the swing side of things than the other one:

It's just so damn catchy.

Thanks. Yeah, it does feel a little too on the "chill" side. I've done a few revisions and uploaded version 2. A bit was rerecorded and some light drums were added to help carry the melody along. I've cleaned up a lot of the other instruments as well. I feel like it's in a better spot now, although I'm looking to flesh out the melody a bit. -
I don't know if it really qualifies, but one of my favorites is, "Mario! Stay Alert!" arranged by Soichi Noriki. It may not be the most suitable swing dancing tune, though. It's more "jazzy" and less "swingy".

I've been gone for a while and super busy at work, but now I'm on vacation. So I got to thinking, what better place to vacation than Costa de Sol? One thing led to another, and... https://soundcloud.com/tesonael/costa-de-sol-acoustic-cover This is really my first time mixing recordings in with samples. I'd dabbled in it a bit(in a cover of Dimensional Breach), but I barely used anything there. I'm happy with the results so far, but there are a lot of improvements to be made, especially with the song's progression. As far as the soundscape and instrumentation goes, I think it's entering "Bossa nova" territory.
-
Yeah, I didn't catch that little spike at first. I ended up redoing the recording and leveling it out a bit, as well as changing a few segments I wasn't entirely happy with. No major changes to the melody itself, just a few dynamics. I also felt it was missing something, so I added some light orchestral/piano accompaniment. I think I liked how it turned out.

I finally found the time to do another acoustic cover, so here it is. I decided to go with a lower key then the original, partially for convenience and partially for personal preference. Still working on my recording quality, but I think this is a step above some of my earlier recordings. https://soundcloud.com/katallen-12/dimensional-breach

Hm..Mine is more of a "Annual Summer Depression". I do get a little down in the winter, but I usually keep busy. I tend to enjoy the cold and the overall "grey" atmosphere, and the rain doesn't bug me much. On the flip side, I'm not a huge fan of the heat(it regularly hits 100F here) and my productivity tends to drop a lot in summer. That's when my annual depression tends to kick in.
-
Not a problem, the idea piqued my interest and I figured I could use a little practice. It's not that great of a mix right now though. Feel free to head over to my thread in the workshop if you have any feedback or changes you'd like to see(or post it here, that also works). Getting busy with work so I can't promise anything, but I'll be working to improve it when I have time. It's also up for download on Soundcloud if you somehow enjoy it that much.

Haha, well, chaotic was more or less what I was going for. My original idea was to keep the ambience of Tallon Overworld and bring in elements from Potential For Anything, but it didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. You can hear some of that idea towards the last quarter of the song. It was never fully realized, though, and in the end I decided to go with a more fast paced energetic feeling. Right now I'd say about 80% of the source material in the song is from VVVVVV. The lead at the start of the song is following a segment of Tallon Overworld II(albeit in a different key), while towards the end there's a familiar bit from Chozo Ruins. There's definitely a ton of room for improvement though. After listening to it a few times there are places where the staccato strings aren't as clear as I'd like, and many areas where it feels either too empty or too full. Thanks much for the feedback - I'm not much of a remixer, so every little bit helps out.

Just an update here - I've got something of a WIP now. It's uploaded to my Soundcloud if you feel like giving it a listen. It's closer to a remix of Potential For Anything than a mix of the three songs, but it does incorporate a few elements from them. Some of the harmonies were pretty similar. https://soundcloud.com/katallen-12/nuclear-potential

At the request of tabhuli, I decided to attempt a mix/fusion of VVVVVV's "Potential for Anything" with a few elements from Metroid's Tallon Overworld 2 and Chozo Ruins themes. It's still deep in the "WIP" territory, but this is how it's coming along so far. Most of the songs elements are from VVVVVV, although a lot of the harmonies from Tallon Overworld are quite similar to those in Potential for Anything. There's still a fair deal of EQ and mastering to do, though(not to mention improvements to the song itself). https://soundcloud.com/katallen-12/nuclear-potential Update #1: * Messed around with the EQ a bit more. Hopefully it's a little more balanced now. * Touched up some of the harmonies and cleared some of the noise. It's a lot cleaner and clearer now. * Fixed up the drums. They stuck out quite a bit in the previous mix. I think they're blending in better now instead of blaring over the mix.

I can't promise anything amazing(or that I'll be able to do it at all), but I think I'll give this a shot. I'm not the best at remixing, though, so it may come out as more of an arrangement/fusion of the themes. Tomorrow's my day off work, so I'll sit down and spend some time on it and see what I can come up with.

So I dug this up and figured I'd toss it here for fun. I've had a little side project going on for several years - a SaGa/FFL remake, but other things(music/life) have taken priority and it'll probably never be finished. This is one of the first pieces of music I did for it. It's something of a retro/rock/punk/noise version of Lethal Strike from SaGa II. Note that it was made to loop, so there's no proper intro/outro. Or much EQ/balance. It's not something I'd even consider submitting as an actual ReMix - Not without a lot of work, but I probably won't revisit it. It's years old and I could do something much better from scratch. https://soundcloud.com/katallen-12/ffl2-lethal-strike

Glad to participate, though I hope I didn't go overboard in some areas. I was going with a pretty standard orchestral arrangement, but at the last minute I got a few outlandish ideas and it ended up like that.
