PRC451 - Apes Travel Back In Time (Ape Escape)
TheVideoGamer replied to Bundeslang's topic in Competitions
Congrats Hleet, looks like i forgot to vote lol. Then again there was only really 2 entries. so.... Feedback time! Hleet - I like the use of the pads here, it still retains that moodiness of the original, even with how bright the sounds are. I'm a big fan of the bassline here, very juicy. The melody is also really great, captures the space-like feel and it's great. Drums however i wasn't a fan. Too acoustic for an electronic genre. They get in the way almost. If you have more of a electro set, then this could improve it immensely. The mix is top notch here, very great quality, and everything is blended nicely. The synth choices were actually great, best part for sure. It's just the drums i'm not feeling. Everything else is lovely though, awesome job on the arrangement! Well done! Souperion - Nice job taking it slower. You've almost made it ambient rather than DnB like. Even though it's 2 chords, the original is very dreamy, opting for a lot of spaced out notes, so it really makes you feel like you're in space. In this one you kind of modified the chords in a way, that makes it Star Wars/Space Opera like, and i think that's a lovely idea. You're almost moving it into a different territory in itself. Big fan of the piano embellishments in this one. The mix is also really good, no muddiness here. You say you didn't have time, but it sounds to me like a lot of work was put in this. Now you did take away the drums, which is fine but can leave things a little empty in parts. But that's not the big problem for me. I don't know if i've just been accustomed to it, but the chords in the original were just what made the piece for me. Your remix changes the chords, loosing a bit of the dreaminess. It's not bad, just not my cup of tea. It rubs alongside the source in a odd way. But that still doesn't make the piece bad, as there were a lot of awesome moments in this. You did an awesome job on the arrangement! Well done! -
It has that really nostalgic SNES vibe that most people associate the system with. Looking forward to transforming this source!

Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) Congratulations to Souperion for winning the last round! As a result, he get's to choose this month's MnP source! Here's what he had to say about his pick: ""Anything But Tangerines" from Earthworm Jim 2. The franchise is bizarre and the games were challenging with some impressive music for the SNES era. Have at it!”- Souperion GAME: Earthworm Jim 2 (SNES) SOURCE: Anything But Tangerines VIDEO: Deadline: 30th July @ 1PM Closing Date: 3rd August @ 1PM Vote Ends: 10th August 1PM MnP ARCHIVE - made by Trism submit: https://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/MnP134 MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines Rules for Picking a Source: All video game sources are limited to the 6th generation of video game consoles and earlier. This was due to community consensus, where people preferred to remix more retro games, than newer games. 6th generation includes: GameCube, Xbox, PS2 and Dreamcast. I'm now restricting big name franchises (Such as Zelda and Mega-Man) to one source per year. This is to encourage more obscure games, that not many people will know about to be picked. Make sure you provide me both a video and a MIDI of the source in question. Note: This is subject to change. Also keep an eye out, if any special rounds come into fruition. Guidelines: Modifying the Source is fine, so long as it doesn't sound completely separate from its original intent. If you're gonna do a genre change, at least make sure the original aspect of the source is not lost. Tempo changes are fine, as long as it's not a big change. I'm talking like, going from 80bpm to 140bpm. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max), and submitted as a MP3 file. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. Try to avoid making quality-based comments on submissions until after the Round is concluded. It is to avoid a Bias in Votes. MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make people's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

ThaSauce went down for quite some time, so my entry that i have ready couldn't be uploaded. Would it be ok if we have like a couples hours extension to account for that so i can get my submission in? @Bundeslang Here's a dropbox link in case not: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx6xvnrzokdmqcp/Aquatic Beats.mp3?dl=0 -

PRC448 - Fire in Overworld (Breath Of Fire 1)
TheVideoGamer replied to Bundeslang's topic in Competitions
Sorry i missed this round, i was away for 5 days on vacation, so i ended up getting caught up on a lot of things. Plus as well, i was struggling to come up with something for this, it was actually more difficult than i thought. It's a lovely source, but it's not an easy one to remix. That as well as me being busy. Glad you guys had fun, now that i'm here, i'll try and throw something in for the next round. The voting box seems to be closed, so i'll post a few words here. None of the entries really go over 3 minutes, so this one will be pretty dam short. Oh well. Souperion - I'm worried it's gonna be a lot of Breath of Fire lol. We've already had 2, and this might not be the last. Oh well, it's a good game with a good soundtrack, so there's nothing wrong there. This has all the makings of your classic orchestral sound. The intense string and brass work, mixed with the electric guitar sounds. The melody work is strong here, i love how you've added all the instruments into perfect harmony, it sounds like a great HD rendition of the source. There is a lot of intensity in this one, which is good and bad. I don't know about everyone else, but i find it weirdly hollow. Like there seems to be a lot of loud brass notes, and quiet string work. I don't know if this is intentional, but i definately feel the mix could do with a slight bit of polish. Also some of the arpeggios are very unnatural, and mechanical. It sounds like it was meant for a synth, not an acoustic instrument. However though despite that, the idea was pretty awesome, and i can definately understand why you was chosen to be the potential winner (Assuming what's on ThaSauce is correct. I've just gotten here). It's a lovely arrangement, and a ton of fun, well done! AxLR - Welcome back dude! Been missing your techno jams. Really loving how you've transcribed the melodies into some tight synths and mallets, really adds that whole tight funkiness to the whole thing. Bassline and drum work is a little overpowering for this, and the melodies are very hidden. I'd add something more louder to amplify the melodies, and make the bassline not so rattling in my ears. The idea is awesome though, and while short, it was super creative, and gave me some inspiration for some ideas. Honestly going techno is not actually a bad idea, i feel with polish this could be amazing. Already sounds lovely, you did a great job on this, well done! HoboKa - This one is very short, so i don't know if i'll get some mileage out of it. I mean 1 minute pieces can work amazingly well, but i feel we'd need a little more if i were to get a full listening experience out of it. Also when i listen to short pieces, i have a feeling it becomes more unfinished the shorter we go. The actual arrangement itself is pretty awesome to be honest, it's a very honest and almost accurate orchestration of the piece. Like if there was a remake, this is a great candidate for an official remix, the piano and drum work is really great. There doesn't seem to be much string work in this, or at least the strings are getting pushed down by the drums and piano. If i were to polish it, i'd add some strings and maybe tone down the intensity of the drums. Also i had to replay this like 6 times in order to write down some actual feedback lol. Still though lovely stuff, really did an awesome job on the arrangement, well done! Hleet - Great brass and string work, there seems to be a lot of consistent themes in each of the remixes here. This is my favourite in regards to the string work, it's very clear and concise, and really lends itself for some super strong melodic writing. I love the brass work here, it really goes super well with the strings. The timpani hits also really adds some weight to the whole thing, it was great. Now if i were to critique it, there is quite a heavy lack of bass parts in this, making it a little too light an airy for the piece. A double bass or cello could work super well. The ending is very abrupt, and feels like the sound just stops, without any anticipation for the ending. A fade out would be good here, to conclude your remix. I'd also consider some general mixing touches here too, it's a little muddled. It's almost like you have the orchestra playing in a straight line, rather than arranged how it would normally would. So what i mean by that is, traditionally we have the percussion in the back, the strings and woodwinds in the front, and brass somewhere in the middle. In your remix, they seem to be in the same spot throughout, which makes for a more stiffer orchestra. Still though, i love the string work in this one, very clear, and probably the best part about the whole thing. Well done! Again, hopefully i can make it to the next round! -

And i forgot to vote, how wonderful lol. Oh well congratulations Hleet, well earned win! I'll post some feedback below: Hleet - Some sick metal vibes here, that is some powerful beats, and some seriously good guitar work. It sounds quite convincing to say it's done on software. If it's real, then that's even more impressive. The guitars are great in this, totally seems like a plausible band cover. The drums are a little, different, is probably the word. I like the sound of the drums, they don't seem to have much velocity changes, it's very much a mechanical sounding kit, especially for rock music. I could maybe see more of a case for metal, but this is more or less hard rock, so the difference is noticeable. Big fan of the trumpet lines though, great way to add depth to a simple piece, it really works well. Ending was a little abrupt in my opinion, i would have expected more of an ending, however i did love what i hear, and the whole metal approach was lovely. I can see why people voted for you, this was great. Well done! Wassup Thunder - Longest one of the bunch. I notice with short sources, it does become a bit harder to remix, because you essentially have to expand upon something already short. I do dig the rock and orchestral arrangements in this, really adds a cinematic depth to the piece. Interesting way of transcribing the melody, it works super well in this context, the whole thing is very action adventure like, it's great. The synths bring it into eurobeat territories, that was really cool. Mixing is a little stagnant, it could do with some polish, specifically in the orchestration. It's almost like the orchestra is fighting for the front, causing the drums and guitars to get pushed back. When the orchestra takes a backseat it works wonders, but that only comes at certain points. Still though, even with it's polishing and clean-up, it was still an amazing remix. I really dig that guitar solo in the middle, not present in the original, but man it's soo fitting to the piece. Love all your original titbits too, this was just a lovely remix. Well done! Souperion - Really cool computer noises in the beginning, this is not what i was expecting for a remix of Mega Man, but man i like it when people go in unique directions. Really digging the strings and piano, really captures the emotion of the source, in comparison to the energy. The sound effects are a lovely touch, i love the attention to detail like that. I also love how you've built the dynamic from something small into something huge. The ending was a great climax to finish the whole thing off. Shame it only lasts for like 30 seconds, i feel that could have been utilized more. I know it's only 3 minutes, but that idea could work for like a 5 minute piece. I was struggling to find anything really to critique, besides maybe the occasional polish here and there, because the mix was great, and the idea was just lovely. Well done! Sorry that i didn't vote, i'll try and be more focused next round! Glad you guys had fun! -
