To open the synths feel dry.

The open hat sizzle is hot, bring that down ~2db.

The arrangement is solid with plenty of interpretation, but the production is what needs the most work.  The parts don't feel like they blend together for cohesion so much, they feel like they are all the foreground and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to focus on.  The panning is favored to the right it seems, I think it's the open hat just standing out so much.

Open sections like 0:58-1:11 and 2:25-2:54 could benefit from having another soft lead play a countermelody or pads with filter sweeps to fill the space in.

You give us textural contrast by dropping out parts to create less going on but what about dynamics?  Could definitely use some dynamics with the track staying at close to the same level throughout.

Fade out? After 4 minutes, it'd be nice to have a more refined and conclusive ending.

After all of that it's gonna sound like I'm really ragging on this, but it has potential and I want to see you develop it more.

Awesome, this is precisely the kind of criticism I needed! Thank you so much!

  2. I'm loving it so far, but that last 45 seconds or so kinda stretches a bit long. I think that for a good ending, you could give the brass one more riff/cadence with the bass doing the same, considering its melodic nature throughout.

Very good stuff overall, I hope to see you finish and submit this.

  3. I have an issue with clicks/crackling when I feed audio to the mix amount on the built-in filter VST in my DAW. Basically, I'm trying to filter the low end from other instruments when an 808 bass hits in order to create space without sacrificing volume levels, but I can't do with the clicks/crackling from the value changes.

    What are some good ones?

  4. My approach is ridiculously technical.

I'll split an audio file into dynamic parts to get some sound separation (usually bass, mids, treble, more if necessary). Next, I send each file through an online "audio to MIDI" converter, which gives me some (really) rough translation of the music, but at least it's not one big, hot mess. The resulting MIDI files go into my DAW. Bit by bit, I'll start knocking off the notes with the lowest velocity to get rid of translated harmonics in each track. Once it starts to more cleanly represent the original composition, I'll start new tracks and rewrite what sounds like it's correct; albeit with some trial and error. I use my ears to fill in the parts missing from the above mentioned note deletion.

Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but it gets the job done for me when either no one else did it or someone did and wants to charge money for it.

Some of my SEGA Genesis covers have been done this way, such as Rumors by Timex Social Club.

  5. I'm satisfied with this, but I wanna make sure I didn't screw up and not catch it, so I'm poasting it here (never mind my spelling, I like toast!).

I'll be editing this poast for a YouTube embed when the video publishes tomorrow evening...

Edit: Jesus Christ. Okay, I just listened to it sober. Well, my writing is good (always is when I'm drunk), but I screwed up so bad on the mixing and transitions. Wow, I need to fix this.

Edit 2: this and the next poast are the same link. I replaced the audio file in the page.

@Argle...I don't mean to sound stupid myself, or mean, but no way you can find another track to use or do? 😧

For real, I just searched Google for "Christmas midi" and downloaded a bunch of MIDI sequences that I found lol

Then I went through them until I found something that I thought was worth a mix.

@Argle maybe try this before you give up?
