How to be Timbaland in 3 easy steps!
neminem replied to hseiken's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Yeah... it's always made me sad how he actually did produce a really great work of hip-pop, out of a chiptune remix of a song from the .mod community! Under normal circumstances, that would be absolutely, phenomenally awesome! But then he had to ruin it by being a douche. Unlike him, you're not trying to claim that you made all the music (though it would still probably be a good idea to say whose music it is - it's one of the unspoken rules of mashup culture everywhere). You need extra bass, though, too, if you want to be like Timbaland. -
more mashups! (Including one from DDR)

You might actually be surprised - I certainly was. Yes, the lyrics are stupid, and yes, he was once in a boy band, but the tunes are just so darned catchy. I'd be tempted to call it good music, even. I know, heresy, but it's still true. (BEP, on the other hand, are complete trash - I won't deny you that). Glad to hear from you! -
Any way to download the new mastered version?

Planned? I have plans? Ok, so to be fair, I do have a whole folder of ideas that might work sometime, if I try hard enough - the recent Tears for Fears mix had been sitting in there for a couple months in a half-finished state. Some are more finished than others - a couple of the closest ones include Johnny Cash's Hurt with Hard-Fi's Cash Machine, The Killers' Somebody Told Me v. the theme from One Must Fall (gotta love that one), the instrumental from Kelis's Trick Me Once v. Superfreak (waiting until I can find a pella or a reasonable approximation that has the background part)... there's stuff going on. Often, though, things never actually see completion, because they're waiting on things that will never exist, or because they're just not good enough. -

Thanks! And I'll see what I can do... -

Alright then, sorry about that. Yeah, that was the joke - a friend of mine remarked, jokingly, that the guy up at the time should play "the Max series", being composed of those three songs. He and I both knew it was a joke, and that's what led to this mashup. -

Glad you found something, Dhsu! Also... -
I know this place has gotten much quieter recently, but I thought I might as well post here about what I've been up to, anyway. Link's here: http://www3.hmc.edu/~afield/music/mashups.html Since my last post here on the subject, there's been mixes of: * Justin Timberlake - My Love v. Black Eyed Peas - My Humps * Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around (Comes Around) v. Tears For Fears - Mad World * Jay-Z & Linkin Park - Numb/Encore v. The Red Paintings - Mad World * The Who - Baba O'Riley v. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag * Ludacris - Area Codes v. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama But more importantly, this being OCR, I just finished a mix of two DDR songs. Namely, Max 300 and Max Don't Have Sex With Your Ex. Yes, this was a joke: my dorm plays a fair amount of DDR, and at one such impromptu gathering, someone joked that the guy up should play the Max trilogy. You know - Max 300, Max Unlimited, and Max Don't Have Sex With Your Ex. The same guy then suggested that a mashup needed to be made. So I made one. It's a joke, but I still think it came out fairly decent, especially considering the amount of pitch-shifting it required.

I didn't know the original, but I like this. Chiptune covers are always great, and this is a pretty original sort of chiptune cover. I'll admit, though, I was skeptical at first - it sounded like it was just going to be chip drum + chip bass, which gets old quickly. You might want to actually turn the treble up a bit in the beginning, which is a funny thing to say, at a time when the most common complaint about this sort of thing is "lacks bass". It's stuff like this that keeps me checking wip:other every once in a while.

someone tell this person, SoaD didn't make the Zelda song!
neminem replied to neminem's topic in General Discussion
Indeed he does! Thanks, Zircon! But Fratto - there's a difference there. You see, House of the Rising Sun was actually covered by most or all of the people you mentioned. Whereas SoaD never covered Rabbit Joint's song. Though, as I said, it would be really amusing if they did, just to confuse everyone more. -
http://community.livejournal.com/dwfanvids/144674.html If you want to see a great example of stupidity, just look here. The fanvid is actually pretty amusing, except that the creator is absolutely convinced that Rabbit Joint's Zelda cover is by System of a Down, despite clear proof to the contrary. Can someone else help beat it into this person's head that, just because google tells you something, doesn't mean it's right?

Well, for pellas, this is my first stop, always: http://acapellas4u.co.uk/ For instrumentals, there's no one spot, but frequently you can find something someone's made or leaked, by googling around a bit. Also, if you hang out on GYBO (http://www.gybo-v3.co.uk), you'll see threads about newly-made pellas/instrumentals every so often. Then, too, frequently you can fake a 'mental by clever loop-editing (something that's much less feasible with pellas, hence the existence of a4u, and no corresponding i4u ).

Sony Acid Pro is the big name in the mashup culture (I know a few people use Ableton Live, and a few even still use their hardware dj'ing setup, but Acid is by far the most popular). In any case, that's the loop-making software I've gotten to know over the past couple years.
-
Just thought I'd post here, in case anyone might be amused that doesn't frequent GYBO: I posted a couple more mashups. Of particular interest to the game-tune-mixing world would be third down from the top, in which I mash the OneUp Mushrooms' arrangement of the Halo theme, with Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of my Head. It scares me how much they fit, without having to do anything more substantial than lining them up and beatmatching them. The other two I posted just now, Teenage Wastebag and Sweet Hoes Alabama, required much more substantial cut-and-paste work.

Except it's not a tied vote. it's gotten two yes's, and that's it (as far as I can tell, from the queue page). I'm assuming a "PILL!" is a yes, rather than a no (and why would something with two no's, still be in the queue in the first place?)
-
It's reasonably amusing, anyway... On an entirely unrelated note: they should post my song already. It's been sitting in the queue, with two yes's, for like 2 weeks now.

Dr. Mario's On Drugs (Eminem v. Virt)

It's in the queue . Anyway, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, I know I enjoyed making it. -
Dr. Mario's On Drugs (Eminem v. Virt)
neminem replied to neminem's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Ok, so... what "finish"? Granted, this is wip, so I suppose comments like that make sense. But it's also the only place here you go to post silliness of this sort, so I will ask: are there any specific things people think aren't finished? Cause I didn't find any (I tend not to post stuff until after I've beta'd the hell out of it, myself). Thanks for the compliments, though, everyone who's given them. And especially zircon, given that zircon is awesome. -
How many songs do you have on your mp3 player?
neminem replied to EdgeCrusher's topic in General Discussion
So do I. I also have approximately 60 gigs full. -
So... I don't know whether this was obvious to everyone, but Doctor Mario is kind of a huge drug reference. For that reason, I'd been meaning to get around to mixing Eminem's Purple Pills (being all about various colors of pills), with the Doctor Mario music (being all about various colors of pills). But... the original isn't that exciting to make loops of, and the Smashing, Live! version would be rather difficult to work with. So it wasn't until recently that I remembered virt had a super-funky arrangement that would play rather nicely with the vocals, and today, while I should have been doing homework... well, it came together rather quickly. Obviously, this is a joke piece, but joke pieces should still sound good, so hopefully this does. http://www3.hmc.edu/~afield/music/neminem_-_Doctor_Mario_Is_On_Drugs.mp3

I was gonna make this thread, but then I forgot. In any case, yeah, it's pretty awesome. Also, you should check out the guy's mashups - he makes some awesome mixes.

Hey, when I'm driving, I'm usually singing... I don't think I would really approve if my drivers started singing, especially because then it'd be a pain to figure out how to get them to shut up. For instance, my room-mate last year... his hard drive sounded like it was singing, half the time. It was really annoying.

Yeah. In all seriousness - we already have a Pi Day, 3/14, and Pi Day has always been celebrated by the eating of Pie. P.S. Chocolate pies for the win.
-
Yeah, I definitely remember that - I was saddened greatly when I heard the results. Note that he talked about his ideas as ideas long before he'd shown any results, and I thought the idea of writing a musicalization of an OST, especially such a classic one as FF7, sounded pretty brilliant. I'm all about weird genre-bending of precisely that sort - but only if the results are good. Suffice it to say, his lyrics weren't that great, and his mockups were unlistenable. I'm still sad, though - it would have been fun, had it been masterminded by someone with some talent. And I still haven't used my recording equipment for anything exciting (not that I had any of that at the time; at the time, I would have been recording on a 5$ piece of crap).
-
So... tonight, I decided to have a bit of fun. Everytime a popular artist borrows something big, a mashup artist has been there to provide amusement in the form of a mix of the two: I think immediately of PartyBen's Computer Talk (of Coldplay v. Kraftwerk), and Cheekyboy's Tom Petty v. Chili Peppers. I wanted to get in on the action this time, so bam: neminem - Do Acid (Tempest v. Glenn v. Nelly Furtado) It's a bit dirty, still, since I obviously didn't have a 'pella or an instrumental to work with, just the originals. Incidentally, just overlaying the chiptune over the Furtado tune didn't sound that great - they're too similar in some ways, but not quite similar enough in other ways, so it just sounded off. What did sound good, though, was overlaying the original tune by tempest over the Furtado tune; then I added a bit more of the chiptune in places. Oh yeah. Then, while I was already there, I made this, as well: neminem - Acid Signs (Tempest v. Glenn v. Snoop Dogg). As you can see, Mustin: I consider what I do to be real music, of a (rather twisted) sort, even though I am perfectly happy to admit that I have no skill at writing anything of my own. What I do differently, though, is state explicitly where everything I stole came from. That's the difference between borrowing and plagiarism.
