  1. Just for the record - I'm reading through this whole thread now, and I have to say... if there were another UnMod meetup, I would so drop everything and go to it. Just as long as it were actually declared an UnMod meetup, not OCR, not OffTopic, not NuMod or ReMod or whatever the hell else tried to take the place of UnMod but failed. An actual SoCal UnMod meetup, like the first one (which was awesomely awesome) would be pretty great. Yes, I'm aware I quoted a post from a reasonably long time ago, but that's irrelevant. I wish I could find the thread from years back asking who thought they would stick around UnMod forever, and I said I was pretty sure I would; that I imagined in 10 years I'd probably be coding somewhere, and still checking it for updates as often as ever... but, oh, right, it got deleted. Ooh, edit! Posts are always better when you're increasing your epeen: I know that game was already mentioned, but it wasn't mentioned that I showed up.
  2. So, I do have a bunch of stuff, but given where the topic of this thread ended up going, I think the most relevant thing is this: That was the saddest part about the rumors that UnMod was going to be deleted - after Kyle's prank, we'd heard it all before. There'll never be another place quite like UnMod was, that's for sure.
  3. This thread makes me all kinds of happy (though it'd be better if most of the pictures weren't blocked, courtesy of work). I just came back to link someone in the KoL forum who thought he had a huge postcount there to mine, here... but then I had to drop in and say hi. Hi! And, there totally was a warning. It was just in a dark closet, behind a sign that said "beware of the leopard". If I remember, when I get home, I'm totally posting some stuff here; I've got a folder full of random things from this place, some of which might not have been posted yet. Like fad threads. I still love them; RR (KoL's equivalent of this forum, except it was always moderated, so people don't complain about it) does the same thing, but calls them "bandwagon threads". But the mods responsible for the place lock them for being pointless. EDIT: Interestingly enough, I just discovered work doesn't block this forum... this is not at all good, in any way. I'm leaving now, for my own good.
  4. Yeah, so I hardly ever come into the forums anymore, but I'm one of those people now, and I might as well say so here. Started playing WoW when I graduated last winter; almost have a 70. Namely, I just hit 69 last night. Shouldn't be too much longer. Once I hit 70, I expect I'll probably start leveling a second, and log onto the first only every once in a while, or when I have friends to group with. Oh, and I'm on Runetotem, for the record. Half the reason I joined the WoW-playing ranks was cause a bunch of people I know from college started a guild back in the beginning, which I'm now in. If any of you are ever on Runetotem, and you see a member of 7 Scientists, they almost certainly went to Mudd (or another of the Claremont colleges, and know a Mudder). Kingdom of Loathing's still the game I care the most about, though. Over 2/3s of the way done with my oxyloop! (Something which doesn't take very many hours, but takes about 6 months of not many hours).
  5. I told tweek that if he reminded me, I'd buy one. He reminded me, and I bought one. Looking forward to it! And to having a cd of which even less will be pressed than there were of my Project Majestic Mix cds, something I didn't think possible.
  6. You might have noticed, I don't tend to pay that much attention to forum goings-on around here anymore. So I'm glad tweek poked me to tell me about this - as I told him already at that time, this looks pretty shiny, and I'm definitely buying a copy.
  7. Cool - glad to hear you enjoyed it. Even if I, personally, agree more with the GYBO people... I think the OMF one's way more musically interesting, too. But I'm glad you liked the JT, anyway.
  8. Funny - you're the first to have stated that preference. The handful of people at GYBO that responded to the thread there all said they liked the OMF one, and the JT was meh. Anyway, thanks for the listen.
  9. Just thought I'd let anyone who happened to stumble into this subforum know that I just uploaded 3 new mashups, two of which should interest those interested in vgmusic (and the other of which is Queen, and everyone likes Queen.) They are: Sexy Loch Prophecy - Shoddy Loch (from the Cave Story remix project) v. Justin Timberlake - Sexy Back (acapella) Somebody Must Fall Kenny Chou - One Must Fall 2097 Menu Music v. The Killers - Somebody Told Me (acapella) I Want To Break Free (From High School) Queen - I Want To Break Free (instrumental, and vocal bits) v. High School Musical - Breaking Free (pella) And, of course, as always, the entire list is here. Let me know what you think! Or just download them, throw them in a folder somewhere and forget about them; that works too.
  10. Bwahaha... I hardly ever go in here, but when I do, one thing I look for is fellow mashup artists. I was not, however, expecting zircon to have joined those ranks. I have to say, though - I like the last 4 minutes, but were the first two really necessary? By which I mean, you couldn't really hear anything that wasn't HBFS until about 2 minutes in - and if I wanted to listen to HBFS by itself, I'd rather listen to it in its original tempo and key. Perhaps radio edit version is in order?
  11. Well... Aquatic Ambiance is one of my favorite songs in any video game, ever, so when I say When Diddy's Gone is my favorite mix of them, I'm sort of biased. Runaway Dixie might be a better mix, but it doesn't have Aquatic Ambiance in it. You could mix utter crap with Aquatic Ambiance, and as long as it was in-key and in-synch crap, I'd like it. No, not In-Sync crap, though, hey, give me a pella .
  12. So, I already told this guy he was awesome, several times, in his thread over at GYBO. So I don't need to tell him that any more. Obviously, I'm the one that bugged him to post this here, as I'm pretty sure a lot of people here will get a huge kick out of this. I am, however, posting this for the benefit of people that are thinking, "rap pellas? That sounds kind of lame...." It's not lame. It is, in fact, certifiably awesome. Do yourself a favor and download this. P.S. Yes, this is the right forum. You did fine.
  13. I've heard many beta versions of this song, but I hadn't talked to Trenthian in ages, so it was a nice surprise seeing the final version. This is much better than any of the other versions I heard, and I liked them a lot already. Trenthian is awesome.
  14. Hey all! I know a couple other people here are fans of mashups, and in posting a new one I just finished tweaking, I realized I haven't posted about them here in a while. So, I'm fixing that now. The one I just finished a few seconds ago is one of my favorite A+Bs ever, and I'm calling it: 30 Seconds To Mars Isn't Driving Any More 30 Seconds to mars - Stronger (Kanye cover) v. Rob Dougan - I Am Not Driving Any More (instrumental) Other recent additions to the page include: Johnny Cash - Hurt v. Hard-Fi - Cash Machine (pella); Oasis - Wonderwall v. Eric Prydz - Call On Me; and Coldplay - The Scientist v. Miser - Zombie (The Cranberries cover). Feel free to look back at stuff I posted earlier, too! Link: http://www3.hmc.edu/~afield/music/mashups.html
  15. Not even 00FF00? That's pretty green! Good job, anyway, AD. I've never been much a fan of comic books, but I can imagine how excited I'd be if, for instance, a local bookstore were to sell old sci-fi novels for a dime each, and how much I'd spend there...
  16. Yeah. I don't care about ads at all, as long as: a. they aren't bright and flashing, and don't play sound without you asking them to, b. they don't disrupt the page layout (I've seen it before), c. they're never even slightly nsfw, and d. THEY DON'T HAVE VIRUSES IN THEM! That one's the kicker - I've seen multiple instances of ad services getting hacked or tricked into serving virus-loaded images, or javascript that tries to download something illegitimately onto the computers of everyone who sees it. That is never ok. But, given that you're getting ads from a reputable source (i.e. google), I don't think any of those concerns will be issues. So do what you like.
  17. As they might say, "post in epic thread". And yeah. OCremix has definitely influenced me in that it was the first musical scene I associated myself with, the first time I saw appreciation for a particular type of music as a social thing. It also certainly broadened my musical range within the world of game music immensely, as there are all kinds of games with good music that I haven't ever played, but whose music I now love.
  18. I like it. I can't comment the way Eternal Testament did, as I only know the new series' theme... but I like it. It's very different from the version I'm accustomed to.
  19. I say replace them with synths. Not so much because your voice sucks, but because I've heard a lot of dance-y remixes of Take On Me, but I don't have any decent instrumental versions with synth leads .
  20. People ask that a lot. There are several answers: 1. If you hang out around GYBO a lot, you'll see people making note of bits and pieces of songs they've either created with audio trickery, or have gotten from leaked originals. These people are usually happy to provide you with copies of same, on request. 2. Occasionally, if you google around for a song's instrumental, you'll find it. This works especially for recent pop/rap songs, as they're the most likely to have leaked instrumentals in the first place. You can try p2ps for that, too. 3. Finally, you don't always really need a dedicated instrumental track at all - look through the song you want an instrumental of, for intros and/or solos. Sometimes, these can be looped. 4. You can also look around for karaoke versions or instrumental covers - sometimes they're close enough to the original to get something salvageable out of. 5. Acapellas are a much different story. Instrumentals are much easier to fake... but pellas are much easier to find, for one reason: http://acapellas4u.co.uk. That site is every sampler's best friend, as almost every leaked or diy'd acapella that exists, has made it there, and is downloadable for free (for bandwidth reasons, they limit downloads to a few a month, but I've never needed more than that anyway). 6. Sometimes, artists are really awesome and actually, legitimately release bits and pieces of tracks for remix use. For instance, NIN has done this a few times with individual vocal and instrumental tracks, and Jay-Z, The Beastie Boys and M.I.A. are famous for releasing large numbers of their vocal tracks.
  21. You could do it yourself? Really, it's more fun that way. That's how I started making them, thinking, "these things need to be mixed together, but nobody else is going to do it". Course, the first thing I made not only sucked, hard, it had also actually already been done. But still. Then again, you'd need to find something else than the Fiddler on the Roof bit to mix it with, anyway... that bit isn't really that long. Huh, I was actually already fiddling with a Tetris mix, I could see if there was any way to fit that bit in. A pella would make it easier, though, and there's no way anyone's made one (though, incidentally, I do have a diy pella of If I Were a Rich Man ). Tyrog, I don't really listen to Rammstein, but I suppose I could take a listen once school starts, so I have access to other peoples' music on campus. And WesPip: I agree . No, really, despite that being only the third thing I'd made, with the first being horrible and the second being a joke, it's still my favorite of all the various things I've done. Glad you liked it too, though!
  22. I've heard it before, obviously, when it was more wip-y... I liked it then, and I like it more now that it's finished. It's always fun to hear a Toxic mix that takes liberties with the instrumental bits... you're way better at using many source tracks than I am. I have only two suggestions: 1. The rest of the song didn't feel like a joke. For that reason, the chipmonk-y stuff from 2:50-2:55, that did sound a joke, felt very out of place. I'd recommend playing around with scratching the vocals, instead of upping the pitch like that. 2. The concept on the ending was neat, much better than a simple fadeout... but it was way too long. It was like a minute of garbage. It should really be at most half that, or you should make it less painful. If you fix that, I would recommend posting it to GYBO, as it is sufficiently not-sucky that I think people would enjoy it. Definitely don't try the "guess the contents" game there, though - tell people everything that's in it, or you'll just get flamed.
  23. Yeah... it's always made me sad how he actually did produce a really great work of hip-pop, out of a chiptune remix of a song from the .mod community! Under normal circumstances, that would be absolutely, phenomenally awesome! But then he had to ruin it by being a douche. Unlike him, you're not trying to claim that you made all the music (though it would still probably be a good idea to say whose music it is - it's one of the unspoken rules of mashup culture everywhere). You need extra bass, though, too, if you want to be like Timbaland.
  24. You might actually be surprised - I certainly was. Yes, the lyrics are stupid, and yes, he was once in a boy band, but the tunes are just so darned catchy. I'd be tempted to call it good music, even. I know, heresy, but it's still true. (BEP, on the other hand, are complete trash - I won't deny you that). Glad to hear from you!
