Simon's Quest - Bloody Tears
zircon replied to The Green Tentacle's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hey bro. Jiggles gave me the link to this. Here are my thoughts! The arrangement here is actually quite creative. Nice variations on the melody, and good use of original material. This is one of the harder things to get down. Overall though, this mix is too "low" - it's generally not a good idea to play a melodic line so low. Try pitching all the melodies up an octave or even TWO octaves so it's easier to hear and make out. You can also use EQ to increase the high end of melodic instruments like the bells towards the end so they stand out more. Try using some light compression on the MASTER track to level out the volume too... my production tutorial could help there. For all instruments EXCEPT the kick and bass, I suggest you put a parametric EQ on and reduce the LOWEST band significantly. This will eliminate a lot of the bass energy that exists on these instruments, which is not pleasant usually, but leave room for the 'good' bass instruments. I liked the drum sequencing in the main melody part, but the sounds were a little on the cheap side. Check my tutorial on drum programming for help on how to refine your drum parts. You're on the right track, it's mainly a mixing/processing thing here. Reverb on the snare is a good idea, as well as hats that are more audible, and perhaps even some tom fills every so often. This is actually quite good for an early effort. Sure, the production is not polished or up to OCR spec yet, but I am genuinely impressed with the arrangement. Check out some of my tutorials, re-think the octaves of your instruments, make the EQ changes I recommended, and see how that sounds. -
Well, for one thing, Protricity didn't use drumloops there. When people say "drumloops" they typically mean a PREMADE audio loop, rather than taking single WAVs and sequencing together your own patterns. There are multiple factors involved in getting your drums to sound better.. 1. The samples. You seem to be using default FL samples, which are OK, but there are better collections out there. Try the "Packs" folder, the FPC tool, the free stuff on Hammersound and SampleFusion, and so on. 2. The processing. Proper use of effects like distortion/compression, plus EQ, can make your drums sound better. 3. Rhythmic sequencing. Even if you nailed 1 & 2, if your rhythms are no good, the drums will sound lame. I suggest reading my first and fifth tutorials, which cover drums and production respectively. http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3314

I'm a Music Industry major at Drexel University. It's actually considered a B.S. instead of a B.A. degree since there's a lot of technological, business and legal aspects to it. I play the piano but I mainly write/produce music rather than perform.

What??? Of course MIDI was used. It wasn't all live musicians.

The Fantom Xa looks good. I'd like to try one sometime soon, but there are no gear stores in Philadelphia (somehow).

Finally bagged me a controller
zircon replied to Wolfgeist's topic in Music Composition & Production
Glad you found the hardware you were looking for, but unless you're asking something specific or you intend on people discussing a pertinent topic, announcing that you bought one isn't really appropriate for this forum. Locked - if you do have any questions/problems or would like to review the item, feel free to post a new thread though. -
Well, it really depends on what remix you're talking about... not all remixes rely on drum loops. Some have live drums, others use single WAV samples sequenced together. There are thousands of ways to use even a single loop - if you could provide some examples of what you have, versus what you want, I could be more specific. Some general advice would be to use compression on the loops to make them more punchy, and to layer them with single hits (kick + snare for example) to inrease the thickness of the sound.

At the Bubble House, last stop of the meetup (our numbers have dwindled) Somewhat disturbing... BAM!!! I am hella awesome @ grills
-
OCR site staff (past and present) - we love meetups! Darkesword's famous (someone make a gif out of this) Kutrayn, Laura, Jose, and Jiggles playing some four-way chess at the BBQ

Pics coming soon, guys

If you've checked the weather forecast for Philadelphia, you'll see that there are isolated t-storms predicted tomorrow starting at 4PM - 30% chance. This may change by tomorrow, but we're making some backup plans just in case. If it seems like rain is likely, we're probably going to cut out south street and head to the apartment after lunch in center city. Jill and I got a tarp and some rope which we'll have ready in case we need it for outside. HOPEFULLY we won't need to use it...
-
Hey, does anyone have a stereo? Preferably battery powered, so we can pump up the jam while barbequing.
-
Getting to my apartment is not terribly difficult (and you can always call even if you got stuck). The entrance is on 3600 Powelton Avenue; there is a subway stop on 34th & Market, which is about 4 blocks away (go west two blocks to 36th, north until you get to the entrance 2-3 blocks). However, unless you're going to be REALLY late, if you arrive at 1-3pm or so we'll probably still be around the center city area.
-
OK, just some stuff to clarify, and a few things we need to figure out still... * Sequence of events. We need to hash out the specific plan (and alternatives, if it's raining) - but the general idea is this: 1. Meet up @ clothespin (noon) - center city. Wait for potential stragglers. 2. Head over to the convention center area, meet up with Darkesword/Atma, grab some lunch, get day passes/tokens as necessary (for public transport). We'll probably be here until 2-3. 3. South Street? 4. Arrive at the apartment (via subway) by 5 or so. BBQ prep + dinner. 5. General hanging out, video games. 6. Bubble House for more dessert & beverages - this is where Jill works. So.. we're NOT going to be going to the apartment first, because it's actually over 20 blocks away from the meetup point. This means that if you're bringing anything, you should travel light. * Video games. Multiple people have suggested bringing some systems/games, but remember, there's no dropoff point for them. Also since the apartment is small, we'll still have a big group when we arrive there for dinner, and we'll be outside at the grills anyway, so there won't really be a chance to make use of them at that point. Only after dinner. * Parking/transportation. There is only street parking near me (non-metered) but I can't guarantee you'll be able to find anything. There are two garages relatively close, but I don't know exactly when they close, or their rates (they're not terribly expensive though). Center city garages are expensive, so the other options are probably best if you're driving. Regional rail, Amtrak, NJ Transit, SEPTA, and Greyhound/Chinatown bus will all take you into easily accessed areas. If you are coming in and need directions on how to get to the meetup spot post NOW... I'll help you out. * Overnight guests. The only person staying with me and Jill is Wes (Bahamut) - we REALLY REALLY REALLY do not have space for anyone else. If you absolutely need a place to stay overnight then you should start asking other people in the thread. It's not that we don't want to put up other people... we simply can't. The entire apartment consists of a combined living/sleeping space and a little kitchen, that's it. * Dinner Money. Jill and I just got back from the grocery store where we bought a ton of food + drinks. Everyone coming for the BBQ will be expected to chip in; the final amount per person will depend on exactly how many people we have at that point, but it will be between $5-10. Cash only! So be sure to bring small bills. * Make note of my cell... 215-531-0798. Call if you're having problems, need last-minute directions, etc.

Sample libraries with multiple articulations.
zircon replied to SSB's topic in Music Composition & Production
Yes, keyswitches are a common way of accessing multiple articulations. But it's memory inefficient. It makes sense to simply load the articulations you need - it will take more MIDI channels (easy in FL - just create more MIDI outs) but ultimately is better for your RAM in the long run. Some virtual instruments actually detect articulation based on other parameters, such as velocity and modwheel. -
Then you want Drumkit From Hell Superior, very simple. An alternative might be BFD.
-
What musical style are you interested in?
-
Well, it's true that if you want the most realistic piano action, you want a digital piano. However, MOST do not come with mod/pitch wheels, USB connectivity, or large soundbanks... keyboard workstations do have all that. I'm wondering if you really care about the difference between workstation action and digital piano action that much. I do have some recommendations though - I'll have to call up my sister, who just got one recently.
-
Why do you want a digital piano?
-
Hey guys we really need a realistic count of how many people will be there for the BBQ (dinner). Once we figure that out we'll probably ask for everyone to chip in a little bit for the meat/buns/rolls, since it will likely cost at least $50 to get everything.

I don't have a lot to add to what Larry said... I suspected the original might be "Sad Song" but couldn't really make any concrete connections until Skryp himself filled us in. Sound design is nice, structure is fine, but the arrangement is simply too far-out from SMRPG to really be considered an OC ReMix. With minimal effort this could be made to pass the bar. Just work in more elements from the original in a more prominent fashion. NO

The clothespin is on the EAST side of City Hall, across the street. Intersection of 15th and Market.

Jill & I can't accomodate more than one person overnight... we live in a studio apartment with one room and really have no extra pillows, futons, sheets (etc). It's barely big enough for two people, much less four. Anyone else here in the area willing to put up some OCR peeps?
