  1. I was a bit worried when I saw djp mention stuff being out of tune in the writeup, but I think it works surprisingly well. It's not polished, but it's not supposed to be. Won't be everybody's cup of tea, but I love it. Actually, my biggest complaint is with the whistle; it really would have benefitted from a bit more reverb or delay; anything to make it sound less dry would have been good.
  2. It may not be completely accurate, but the price is right, and it sounds good enough to be used in the same context in which you'd use the real thing. In other words, guitar suite models don't sound like the real thing, but they sound close enough that nobody except a few particularly finicky guitarists will care.
  3. Yes. That depends on the quality of your current soundcard, but I'd say that if you're working with distortion, which will noticeably amplify any unwanted noise, a good soundcard would probably be a worthwhile investment. The E-mu 404 is only $100 (or was last I checked -- it might even be less now), and it's pretty decent. There are plenty of others out there, but the E-mus are the only ones I have any experience with. Creative's soundcards (SBlive, audigy, etc) seem to get mixed reviews. I've heard some very good sound designers declare them to be great, and I've heard some declare them to be crap. I'd tend to shy away from them, though, simply because they're consumer gear, not production gear.
  4. To plug your guitar directly into the soundcard and get good results, you'll need an amp modeler. I know people around here probably get tired of hearing me say this, but Guitar Suite is awesome. And it's free. Highly reccomended.
  5. Now will this just be space for hosting remixes or could I host a website there as well?
  6. Also, be sure check out zircon's remixing tips.
  7. As far as programs, FL is fine, and plenty of top-notch remixers use it; zircon and darkesword, for example. As far as samples/soundfonts/synths/VSTi's, we already have multiple stickied threads dedicated to that.
  8. LMAO I agree BTW, I'd rather see brit clit than old naked gay men bleeding *shudders* Feel free to continue this discussion in unmod.
  9. Harmonica requires very little musical know-how to play. To play it extremely well takes quite a bit of skill, but it's probably one of the easiest instruments to just pick up and start learning on.
  10. When I was taking my driving lessons we where driving around some mountains. I looked down at my steering wheel and sure enough, I was driving a Toyota. I started laughing and my teacher looked at me like "what's so funny?" So I yelled "DAYUM I'M DRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIVIN' DA DA MOUNTAINS N SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET." She didn't do anything but tell me how to drive after that That's awesome. I lol'd
  11. About to replace my acoustic yet again; getting a Carvin C350, which will probably replace my variax acoustic 300 as my recording guitar, though I'll probably keep the variax around for live gigs (what? I can dream, can't I?) and for quick demo recordings.
  12. Only thing I really like about young link is his d-tilt; it's a spike, and an easy one which requires much less setup than most.
  13. stfu, guitarn00b! ... Actually, yeah, you're right. As far as bang-to-buck ratio for recording amps, you really can't beat an sm57. But that assumes you have an audio interface/preamp/mixer/something with mic inputs. The mic may be just $90, but if you don't already have the ability to record it, getting that will likely cost at nearly as much as the mic itself, if not more. Though honestly, unless you have a REALLY nice amp, I'd spring for modelling software (ie guitar combos, amplitube, guitar rig) before I'd spring for a mic if all you're gonna use it on is guitars.
  14. Brad, update the tracklist. Also, if we still need somebody to take "Epilogue: Dream Shore," I'll do it.
  15. I'd skip the amp altogether, plug the guitar straight into your sound card, and use a vst amp modeler. Guitar Suite is pretty good, and it's free. I've used it in every mix I've done to date that used an electric guitar (though I'm using something else for my upcomming mix of -- ohwait, that's secret)
  16. I hope they don't take out Doc. He's the man.
  17. I'll buy plane tickets in a couple days (so the price will show up on my next credit card bill rather than this one)
  18. Taucer's criticism is fair. However, the only parts that are "note-for-note" are the intro (source), outtro (source), and some of the structure and underscoring of the main theme. If you listen closer though there is a lot of added harmony; at that time I didn't want to touch the melody. In all fairness, I've considered how lucky I was to get this passed then. I'm sure it wouldn't get passed now, and I'm not clueless as to why, don't worry. If it stays on the site, score. If it gets dropped for QA, that's cool too. I would love to remake something more my own with my new equipment. Technologically, I couldn't do it then (AWE32, need I say more). I owe this mix getting posted to Vegas and a good engineering class, not to my equipment. Que sera sera. It's definitely well-executed. I would love to hear more of your stuff. What a coincidence... Is this going where I think it is? I hope so.
