*NO* Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix 'Gentler Stress'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
AFAIK, yes this can be remixed. This lacks the vibe of the orginal, and sounds empty and weak by comparison. The sounds don't gel together in this mix. Not really different from the orginal, apart from a key change somewhere in the song. This to me sounds like the original, stripped down and then given different instruments. And I'm sure I could hear random off key hits coming in at times. NO -
This is definitely borderline as far as arrangement goes. I love the way this has been mixed and I'm digging the beat, but this needs to go further in terms of arrangement. This could be a great one with a little more of a mix up. NO
-
Not bad, but this doesn't move me at all, the mix was rather weak imo, especially when compared to the original. I think the low-finess of it, accentuated by the lack of sharp hi-hats adds to this. NO
-
This definitely needs some mastering, because as it stands the whole thing comes off as weak. It's also way too short, repetitive and the fade out ending is less than graceful. NO
-
There is a lot of background noise on that guitar. I like the idea, but I don't think it was carried off as well as it could have been. The guitar didn't fit in with the rest of the mix, that is my main gripe, and it is a big one. NO
-
The key issue isn't jarringly obvious (for me anyway), but the lack of bass is. I think this mix was lacking something else as well, because it got very boring for me. Very. NO

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Requiem of a Legend'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I can only reiterate what has already been said. The instrumentation is sparse, and there is a distinct lack of energy. NO -
This mix didn't sound how I thought it would, judging from the intro. Where shall I start? Ok, the first and most obvious is that the choir is waaay out of tune with the piano. The drums have none of the ambience of the piano, and so the song sounds very disjointed indeed. Nice concept, I can see where the mixer was coming from, but this is a NO

*NO* Star Ocean: Second Story 'L'Dark L'Aqua'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Nice mix. The only issue that I would say that some might have is that the theme isn't expanded on that much, and that it seems separate from the rest of the song at times. It is borderline on that issue, but I'll still give this one a YES -
You know how mixing can make or break a song? Well unfortunately the mixing on this one broke it. I can imagine how this mix should sound. The arrangement and sounds used are great, the song itself is such a yes. It's the mixing that spoils it completely. For a start, all of the sounds are in your face. I think that with some subtlety, and separation, the mix would sound less saturated. I wasn't too sure if the texture was deliberate or not untiil the second half. That distorted synth was way too loud and all the pad like atmospheric sounds clashed with it, causing a bit of a mess. With the mixing improved this would be a yes, but as it stands for now, NO
-
I like the way that this gets more complex, deeper, over time. It mirrors your enjoyment of the song. Very effective. YES

Wow this is really short. I know this track well, and there isn't a lot of source material, but still, 1.02 is too short. The extreme panning on this is original, but the panning of all the drums to the right is really annoying. The kick should have defnitely been in the middle. The length, combined with the panning issue, means I sentence you to a NO

I'm really liking the production quality on this. My only slight gripe is the piano, which sounded dry at times. Oh no. Hmmm 3.00: oh yeah loving those chords. 3.25 - 3.32: Oh no, some of that piano pattern sounded off-key to me. I'm gonna come back to this, man I liked this track until the off-key. No, I have to do this now, I can't allow off-keyness, I must stick to my own rules. NO I like this track but sorry.

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Iced Out Nine Twenty Two'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I just caught the little bit of sky sanctuary at the start. I think this tune could do with some reworking, it feels as if you've left space for vocals here and then decided against it in the end, but didn't fill the gap. I think the failing of this mix is that it runs out of steam about half-way through. NO -
OCR01148 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Turks in Pursuit'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
No matter what anyone says, I was grooving to this. If we are wine judges, then I just got drunk. You can't test these beats. YES -
Hmm, do we even do soundscapes? It really isn't a musical mix at all, but it is a very good soundscape, the sounds created are very effective and do achieve their purpose. I'm just not sure if this achieves OC's purpose. I haven't been this borderline for a while, and I don't think the panel has either.

I like this mix. I'm going to say no because of the mixing itself (the instrument levels etc.). Every instument needs to know it's place, and they're all trying to take centre stage. It makes the song sound like you're a beginner. Just a bit more work on this one, and it'll defintely be a yes from me. NO

*NO* Final Fantasy 9 'Messenger in the Key of Black'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow this is seriously robotic. In all the sections the notes seem to have the exact same intervals for that section, and I don't hear any human elements to this at all. I can only really reiterate what has already been said. NO -
OCR01141 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Sweeter than Honey'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is really nice to listen to. The samples aren't great but they definitely do the job. YES -
Usually I say arrangement over sounds, but unfortunately the sounds used here detract from the experience, as all I can think of is 'this would sound so much better with better samples'. Great remix, but this really does need better patches to bring the piece to life. NO
-
I think this is a good interpretation. My main gripe is the eq, there's too much stuff going on in the high frequency area, and not enough bass imo - the hi hats selected are too sharp, and not subtle enough. However, I do think this mix has a lot of energy, and is like a hyped version of the orginal. I think it definitely adds enough elements to be posted. YES
-
I really enjoyed this, the left hand kept changing groove, which helped to move the song along really well. My only gripe is that the piano sound lacked in high frequency. But as I listened it became less of an issue. YES
