Ambience? This mix could have been a whole lot more ambient with the addition of one thing - REVERB! This mix needs it badly, a stereo reverb to give the mix some space. Everything sounds dry, it's like a dehydrated tounge. NO

*NO* Street Fighter Alpha 2 'Ready, Get Set, Fire!'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I play too much street fighter, and so am very familiar with this tune indeed. It isn't very different from the original at all, and all the instruments are dry, need some reverb. 2.47 Hmmmm, the song suddenly loses all sense of tone. Don't know why, but everything just sounds out of tune from here onwards. In light of this, NO -
I am a lover of jungle. *Trying hard to stay objective* The drop came waaay to late and I was waiting for some really hectic stuff and that just didn't happen. A lot of the drum samples didn't really fit jungle. The song could have been mixed a little better as well, some instruments were too quiet. This could have been pulled off really well, give it another go. NO

Most of the transitions here are not very smooth at all, and I hear reverb on the kick drim, nooooooooo! It's obvious that a lot of drum loops were used here, and the timing leaves much to be desired at times. In addition, when drumloops are layered on top of one another and one is in swing and the other isn't.... This mix is, as one of my friends would say, confused. Tooooo many loops used, bad timing. Some cool ideas, but just too many crammed into one mix. NO

Hmm, the synth that starts this tune off is way too 'gamy' if you know what I mean. But I have faith that things will evolve. It's a little short, and there isn't much variation to it, the ahh sound is the only thing that plays different notes, all the other instruments are playing the same notes, which makes it a little bland. The song sounds nice, apart from the intro I have no problem with the actual sound. But this mix needs to be more evolved from the original. Try improvising more. NO

*NO* Lufia 2 'Lufia and the Grand Orchestra'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I had some reservations about the sounds used, I thought that a bit more reverb could have been used on the strings and that the choir voices attack was a bit late. However I found this mix to be enjoyable, the arrangement was good and it kept my attention throughout. YES -
Well it's rather short. The arrangement is very good, although the sample quality is sadly below par. A longer resubmission with better instruments and I would give this a yes. As it stands, NO

*NO* Final Fantasy 9 'Lost Soul of Alexandria'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
There was no life in this mix, and the percussion was only a little annoying until 2.33, when it got more annoying. The ambient sounds were nice, although they were sustained too much. NO -
Wow, there's Japanese writing! Er, those 'vocals' are not very nice. It's original, I'll give it that, but the synthesized voices don't work for me at all. The mix itself is really passive, and seemed to rely too much on the vocals as the selling point. I didn't buy it. NO

This is an OK ish mix, but I get the feeling that it could be so much more more. I'm going to give it a NO, but this is one I would like to see re-done and submitted. Perhaps a little more improvisation with the lead guitar would give this track the lift it needs.

That distortion doesn't seem to really fit in, what is actually being distorted here? The melody is repeated tooooo many times in the beginning, so it gets boring very quickly. When it does change, it seems too much of a change. NO

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 2 'The Wasp Hive Jive'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Hmm, those timpani drums are a bit too much in this mix, and I found the instrument playing the main lead a little annoying. This also is not different enough from the original. NO -
*NO* Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition 'Faithful Credits'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Erm, well this sounds nice and all, but this is way to close to the original. NO -
OCR00899 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Dancing Madly (First Form)' *FT*
Malcos replied to Protricity's topic in Judges Decisions
There is a real sense of rhythm in this remix, and I found the bassline in the beginning to be very enjoyable. I don't really think it's repetative, it grooves for a while, and then moves on when it should. I like the synths used and the 'wall of sound' created by the heavy, but nevertheless appropriate use of effects. Edit: Oh whoops forgot to actually say YES -
OCR00896 - *YES* Super Mario World 'Ghosts of the Marble Hall' *FT*
Malcos replied to Saunders's topic in Judges Decisions
This is very impressive. The dynamic range can be likened to that of a film soundtrack, and the instrumentation, expression and arrangement is excellent. It's very spooky at the beginning as well! This is brilliant. YES -
Ooooooooooooo...... I'm liking the vibe here. Nice panning effects and it's about to turn into something.....or maybe not. It needed to be developed a bit more. I expected the drums to evolve into something, with like, a snare and even more hats thrown in or something. It does sound good, but it is frustrating, sooo frustrating. It's like a long intro with everything else cut out. NO
-
Hmmmmmmmm....... NO It's just a recorded midi, and has no impact whatsoever. Sounds like Irish folk music rather than rock, albeit with diminished sound quality.

When I read what some of you said about this being loud, I thought nah, how loud can it be? Bloody hell!!! Being curious as to how a mix could be soooo loud, I opened it up in a Soundforge to see the waveform, and it looked like a solid block and was constantly clipping. It is also not different enough from the original as far as I am concerned. NO
-
Well I wan't really a fan of the percussion myself, but that's just because I'm against the use of toms. Don't ask me why, I just am. Anyway, I found the mix to be just a little too repetitive, and there were some parts that needed some more layers, 2.12-2.56 in particular. NO

*NO* Beatmania 2DX 'Brains Rot Your Videogames'
Malcos replied to Antonio Pizza's topic in Judges Decisions
Well I'm a Beatmania fan myself, I play that while my mates play DDR. Anyway, this mix seems empty, it could have done with a bassline, or just something more. Although beatmania's music can be a little repetitive at times, this mix could have been more of a remix, if you know what I mean. In conclusion, this mix just needs to be more. NO -
The flanger would be ok, but it lasted for the duration of the whole mix, by which time it had become annoying. In addition, the guitar sample was so odd it took me time to realise that it was meant to be a guitar. NO

Very nicely done. YES
