  1. It's been getting better over time, though, if the recent updates are any indication (i.e. less stuff breaks when things are changed). I think the initial mess was caused by Notch pretty much throwing together the multiplayer functions haphazardly with repurposed SSP code when the community started demanding multiplayer gameplay. This happened when SSP was definitely in an early-Alpha state, and SMP was largely ignored for some time. So you've got repurposed single-player code used for multiplayer, and it's largely based on the very early Alpha SSP code that hasn't been kept up to date with the SSP development. Frankly, I'm not surprised at all that it's a mess. Would it have been better if he'd spent a little more time at the beginning putting together a better code base for SMP so it wouldn't be so crazily structured now? Of course. But SMP was an afterthought at the time, and now he's paying for it. I can forgive him for some of the issues, keeping that all in mind, but of course I won't tolerate it forever.
  2. Well, SSP is the "main game" as far as Notch is concerned, and most of the SMP issues don't exist in SSP. So SSP has been Beta-ready for a while now, Notch has just wanted to iron out some of the larger bugs in SMP before bringing the whole game into Beta status officially. At least, that's what I've gathered from his posts.
  3. Alright, we'll try for a vote this round. Since this is starting late, if votes are sparse, I'll nullify them and have you guys resubmit for Freeform in January. This round's submissions are: genesis.mwx by M W Steam Engine by Imagist Mother is Dead by Darklink42 Everyone, and I mean everyone, should vote! Voting ends at the end of the month!
  4. Two submissions... If you two want to duke it out in the voting period alone, I'll open up the voting period for the rest of the month. The other option, which is the default, is to allow this round to fall through and you'll be able to resubmit your entries in January for the Freeform round if you desire to do so. Personally, I say resubmit next month, but that's my opinion.
  5. I've got nothing else to do this month as of right now, so I'm in. I'll get started pretty soon.
  6. The lag the update introduced is making the game unplayable for me right now. Thanks. I haven't seen yours yet, actually. I need to make it a point to do so soon.
  7. New update out today. It doesn't break server access, though, so everyone can still get on. Shame that we did so much exploring already. I would've liked to find a natural lake either above or below ground for my base initially. Oh well. I can still make my own. Not impossible, though. I did this about a week ago. I'll soon be replacing the dirt with wood planks and more sand to finish things off. Then later I'll expand it; not sure how, yet, but I will eventually.
  8. OK, but the cloth isn't within that distance of any exposed lava. So unless it can go right through stone to catch it on fire, the cloth shouldn't be affected.
  9. It may be a long time before the Nether is accessible in SMP, but I've begun construction on my portal area. This is the first step I've completed: Incidentally, is anyone having issues with cloth blocks disappearing? The cloth on top of that keep on disappearing after a while.
  10. Looks like mobs aren't viable yet. Again. Better than before, but still not enough to make them any fun to put in. So no mobs yet.
  11. Are there at least 2 other people planning on submitting? If so, I'll extend the round another week. If not, I'm going to call this one dead. I've seen no one else express an interest in submitting this round.
  12. No, server outdated. You get the client outdated message if either the server or the client is outdated.
  13. Hey0 has finished his update, now it's up to Multiplay to finish the job.
  14. That's how it works right now. Notch said he'll eventually change it so that it asks whether you want to update. However, no timeframe for the change has been given.
  15. Likely means more backend work. The minecart problem has nothing to do with speed. Last night I was doing some cleaning up of my base to prepare for the eventual activation of mobs. This included putting up a warning at the renovated entrance to my main mineshaft: I wonder how many of you will actually get it immediately...
  16. Some of the songs were updated in the Halloween update. I don't think they've been changed since then.
  17. Aw... That could've resulted in some fun times. And plenty of gunpowder harvesting. Any idea when the server will be updated? I know you have to wait for hey0, I'm just wondering.
  18. We will be deciding that if the next update fixes enough problems with them to make it worthwhile. No use making a decision if they don't work. But I vote we allow mobs if they do work properly after the update. Just to get my vote out there. Creative building is fine and all, but it's so much more worthwhile and satisfying if you have to do it while dealing with actual danger.
  19. TESB is also one of my favorite movies, and definitely my favorite Star Wars movie. RIP, good man.
  20. I didn't see the tool-drop glitch as one of the ones fixed in his blog. You sure? Regardless, in single-player I normally just carry around a workbench and a stack of logs with me. That way, whenever I need a new tool, I just drop the workbench, craft a log into sticks, and use the cobble I get from mining to create new stone tools. Saves on space compared to just carrying a whole bunch of tools with you from the start. I prefer that to using a mod to make it easier to get free tools.
  21. That's weird. I don't have that problem. Like, at all.
  22. The inventory-full-but-still-picking-up-items bug only happens under certain circumstances. I've only had it happen to me if all my inventory slots are full and I pick up a stack from my inventory when dropped items are around me that can be picked up. Still, it's a good idea to keep your inventory status in mind when doing large-scale collection.
  23. Something to keep in mind when comparing voice acting for anime is that, often, the actors doing the English dubs have to match the mouth movements for the animation rather than act it out and then have the animation done. Also, they usually record their lines alone, without any input from the actors working with the other characters. So it's a combination of needing to write good dialogue that matches the animation, be able to say it so that it matches, and also be able to act it out well on their own. Japanese voice actors usually don't have this problem; they act out the scenes with the full group at once, being able to bounce off each other and sometimes improv, and then the animation for the dialogue is made. If it's true that Japanese voice acting is generally a bit better in terms of not sounding stiff as a board, then those reasons are probably a big factor in why that is the case. Now, if we're talking tropes and voice acting tendencies on both sides, I could list a dozen or so things I dislike about both the English and the Japanese voice acting.
  24. The submission period ends on Tuesday! People, get in your poetry submissions as soon as possible!
