i recently bought an open-box p5n-e motherboard for about 60$...half off the already low price it's been on sale for lately. however, it doesn't come with any accessories, which i'm assuming includes the standard i/o shield that protects the motherboard's components at the back of the computer where everything plugs into. any idea where i'd buy something special like this?

something i'd like to point out. if you're just looking to run stuff like that (which, if he's talking PS2 emulators, that's a way different problem with the graphics stuff), i'd suggest going with the e6750 processor. it's a 2.66ghz processor, huge fsb, and it's 190$ at newegg. beyond that, you could probably piece something together for cheap without too much effort - a mid tower case (the centurion 5 by cooler master is great), cheap mobo (gigabyte makes good low-end atx and microatx mobos), at least 2 gigs of ram (~40$), and a decent power supply that'll have overhead should you choose to upgrade. if you're running more than emulators, look into one of the 8600 cards - they've got a decent amount of power for about 100$ after rebates. you'll want a graphics card, but you might even be able to go as low as the 8500 or 7600 cards and still be able to play modern games as well. stay xp. vista sucks balls. if you want, just message me via pm or AIM and we can talk a bit about what you want to do and how much it'd cost to do it. i'm really cheap if you want me to build it, too.

my ex-roomie and i were top-100 in the world in team doubles in h2 (we were so young...), so i met mostly the testosterone junkies before i was anywhere near the 9 year olds who drop the f-bomb every other word. it got to the point that the cheating was coming up almost every second or third game, so we just quit because it was so annoying all the time. i hope it doesn't get to that point with h3.

hopefully, they warn developers far enough in advance to let them start coding their older stuff in new ways to make it work on w7. that'd make for an easier release...particularly if they offer it for free to existing owners. it's gonna play hell with the hackers and crackers, though, now all torrents are gonna have to be labeled what they work for. not that i'd know anything about that.

whoops! i messed that up slightly. 128 was something completely different that i switched in. 64-bit can take 16tb of ram, not that you'd use it. sorry about the mixup. well, virtual machines don't function nearly as efficiently as standard equipment does. also, it means that all new software coming out will not be backwards compatible in the least - and you can't run a vst on a virtual machine into a w7-compatible sequencer.

dude, they're going for less than the normal price for a new dvd on ebay. i might as well take advantage of this - back them up, sell them again before it goes out of business. i could get a sizeable amount of backups for relatively cheap...and actually have them be legal, too.

it means you have to buy all new software - EVERYTHING - to get it to run properly. all your vst plugins, all your word processing...everything.

i could never get anything to work well in vista, regardless. xp is just so much more stable for audio stuff - which is all i really use it for, besides surfing and a game or two.

maybe so, but that psu that you picked out is underpowered, particularly in the long run as efficiency starts to drop from wear. a larger psu (as long as it's not enormous or something) is better - that tiny power supply couldn't even handle my system (e4500, evga 7600, 2x1gig ddr2 4200) very well without issues at max load. and there's no room for upgrades in the future. that particular gigabyte ain't a high end mobo, though - that's why it's <100$. i've had issues in the past with heavy fans, and it's better to run with less than more, particularly in a case that can handle it. unless soma's planning on overclocking that processor to like 3.5ghz or something.

let me buy all of your hd-dvd movies. i just got a player for my computer for 10$, so now i want movies for less than they originally cost. post movies and prices in this thread. if they're a special edition, note that.
