  1. I sometimes think Silent Hill 1, 2 and maybe 3 should be considered adventure games because they are so light on gameplay, but pretty heavy in the actual adventure part, including the multiple endings. SH2, to me, was a more accomplished adventure games than many adventure games themselves. Too bad it was far too scary to just leisurely play along like with actual adventure titles. I hope the next Alone in the Dark game fits that ambiguous bill too.
  2. I would put that squarely on the fact that the monkey and kid were just as annoying in the original version. The original was extremely campy, so I don't understand why people are so bewildered that the movie is too. That's simply ironic.
  3. People and critics seems to bash it because bashing the Wachowski brothers is the 'hip thing' to do now. Also, with their extreme visual style, it's bound to piss off any casual movie fan who only wants it realistic and have Oscar-ramifications come next year. Screw them. Those types are the ones that lambasted Cloverfield, one of the best movies of last year.
  4. I don't think the fanservice is that bad. I think it's borderline cute since such serious things are happening outside it. And Kallen is an obvious exhibitionist.. As for Gundam, its typically bad 'weather talk' moments are pretty bad. Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta and Turn-A had the whole 'how is the weather today?' moments... when they were in space.
  5. Faye's Japanese voice being Megumi Hayashibara, I actually liked her voice. I just think shows and movies that are self styled in seriousness just tends to not do as well. People do not like serious business. >Sadface<
  6. It has no moé and cute girls in it. It's amazing looking at the ratings and seeing trashy fanservice anime like ToLoveRu and Kamen no Maid Guy going way up there in ratings.
  7. Gundam 00's first half was very much like Wing, then again, I never thought Wing was conventional with its extreme pacifistic message underneath (I mean, the crucial characters are named Peacecraft for crying out loud). But in the end things gets heated up pretty well and the pacing just seems to defy the conventions to me. As for Frontier, it's like 00 in the way it skirts being oldschool and having new elements at the same time.
  8. If you liked Scryed and Bleach, you'd probably find a lot of new anime to be either amazing or bewilderingly good. Right now Gundam 00, Code Geass and Macross are really good and they almost seem to break tradition with the way robot anime used to be. Then there's the visual freakshows like Kemonozume and Kaiba. Mind Game is a must-watch if you want to see what anime is truly capable of. And maybe The Girl Who Leapt Through Time on top.
  9. I'm sorry, but if you feel that way, don't ever bother watching anime. It's hard to convince people blinded by nostalgia. Also, a lot of modern anime right now have sequels to the older franchises, so I see no problems why the nostalgia factor even matters. I mean, Golgo 13 finally got an anime version after like... 20+ years of not having a true TV anime series. I watched a lot of shows from the 70s and 80s and of course the 90s, but I think 2000+ anime have been some of the best in history. There's way more variety and quality than there ever has been. If you 'can't stand' modern anime, then it means you just aren't looking for the right ones.
  10. Puzzle Fighter and Puzzle Quest if you're a puzzle fanatic like me. Or Ikaruga, Triggerheart for shooter fans. The Prince of Persia remake is incredible (mostly since I fell in love with the older game) and the new Bionic Commando remake looks like it's going to be the game of the year for me.
  11. Classic controller is alright, but I think the 3rd parties are put off by the fact that it's not the main control scheme of most Wii gamers. It's usually the Wiimote. Also, I somehow don't think casual gamers, non-gamers and a whole swath of the Wii population would bother with a classic control scheme. I think that is a pretty sad prospect really. Also, I think the Wiimote is just fundamentally flawed in some aspects in that it's not as responsive as it could (or should) be, and there is absolutely no feedback to the free-motion. Some PC hardware researchers are going into the whole motion-controller-feedback so you can comfortably control motions while feeling resistance to certain movements so you can use it much more accurately and comfortably, but that kind of technology is at least a decade away. I do think Nintendo is going the right direction, but it just isn't working out for the 3rd parties as far as the Wiimote goes. The task must seem much more daunting than previously thought.
  12. Objectively, Snake has really good normal smash moves and he is probably the only reliable projectile fighter aside from Olimar. I can totally see him becoming top tier alongside Pikachu and Wolf.
  13. I probably posted too quick without thinking, but you're right. It just strikes me that the PS3, while it has good games on it, plays it very safe with the types of games it features. Even very short games with little replay values also has got some good reviews too (Heavenly Sword..) While the Wii has its share of experiments (mostly failures and broken promises) while the 360 had a share of those too. Only in the actual number of crappy games, but they also came with a large number of great 3rd party games. That was not the case with the Wii. Also, it's already been two years. It's pretty obvious by now that most of the actual effort is going to the other consoles. Also, it's not really accurate to say that the Wii is actually 'dominating' when the PS3 and 360 are hanging right there even with its hardcore gaming mentality. Again, we saw this with the Gamecube before, so why is this any surprise? Just because the Wii is much more popular now doesn't mean that it lost its 'family friendly' sticker. Even its core games have gotten massively family friendly (MARIO KART) and that is saying something. I mean it's just like the creator of No More Heroes has said: The Wii is marketed and successfully sold to non-gamers for the large part. The types of the games it has is proof. To me, the Nintendo titles are a holdover for now. But look at the majority of exciting 3rd party games and they are on other consoles. To me, Boom Blox was the one game. If you're into puzzlers, you're going to spend hours upon hours making new levels and experimenting. Otherwise, it may be a tough sell. Which is ironic since the game seems to be catering to non-gamers.
  14. PS3 games with good reviews? Maybe it's the lack of games and the number of consistent sequels. I do think it's partially Nintendo's fault because they are so overwhelmingly good at what they do. It must intimidate the 3rd parties at least a little bit. Also they need to play largely by Nintendo's family friendly rules or at least their target demographic (No More Heroes not selling too well is a travesty, but totally predictable). As for Boom Blox itself, I rented it and it is definitely worth a buy. I love puzzle games by default so it's a given. I'm not sure most gamers will really appreciate such a game compared to others. I actually think the core gameplay is way fresher than something like in Brawl. Sadly, even I would give it an 'acquired taste' label. And as for future efforts, I'm still skeptical. It took two years and we barely get three or four noteworthy 3rd party efforts? That's just too slow. The DS fares better since developing family friendly games for handhelds is rather easy and 3rd parties can drudge up their old 2D franchises for them. The Wii has major competitors in PS3 and 360 for developers to put more resources in machines that can output more of their creativity (ironic, I know) than a machine that is essentially limited to the control setup and the family friendly mindset. I think it's perfectly fine if the Wii is Nintendo's playground. Why, the Gamecube was more or less the same. That's why people buy multiple consoles.
  15. Typical Nomura hero in Neku. He's exactly like Cloud at times. Basically an sullen, quiet asshole who turns sympathetic later.
  16. I thought Zeta was trashy, especially later on with the tacky, unexplainable romantic angles. Turn A is good but it feels a bit too pacifistic at times. It's like the ideas of Wing turned more... pacifist.
  17. I think there were still some good angles in the last few years to make it worth it. Of course they're milking it, but I think I watched almost all there is to watch so far. It's still one of the best detective anime ever made IMO. And then there's a Conan-esque Daughter of Twenty Faces recently that is very good.
  18. That sucks, but they had a long good run, you have to admit. And what the hell is up with the 'x and x is a better band than Stratovarius' comments? Were we talking about other bands? No.
  19. You Are (Not) Alone was pretty good. Still it is all an appetizer until the fourh movie that will speculatively have an all new ending. As for other shows that really push the boundaries of anime, I think Kaiba is actually the single best show running right now. I like Macross Frontier and Code Geass like most everyone, but Kaiba is simply a work of art.
  20. I'm not ashamed to say that I like watching Attack of the Show. Nothing to watch on that time of the day anyway.
  21. The power slash must have been the easiest thing to do on the PS2 version. Also, I had no problems with the analog controls for the circle either. I just don't see any reason to buy the Wii version considering all those control quirks. Sounds to me like the wiimote functionality was mostly tacked on the game.
  22. I'm so ashamed(or proud?) that I picked up the Prince of Tennis track.
  23. I'm pretty sure I'll be eventually buying a lot of Bluray movies (pretty much a must for me. Normal DVDs don't really cut it for me unless they're packed with extras nowadays. Otherwise, it's all high def movie channels) and PS3 games and hopefully some of the typical obscure games to come out (if the PS3 is popular enough to have such obscure gems like in the PS1 and PS2 days..) I'm still waiting for a few killer aps for the PS3 that isn't another derivative sequel or something that won't be released for better online playability on Xbox Live. I'm still a bit more excited for the DS games right now than PS3 at the moment. Though Wii doesn't really seem to have anything worth noting for a long stretch..
  24. I'm sorry, but that movie was terrible. It seems like I keep thinking that while all others apparently love it like with Batman Begins, which I hated also. I mean, the dialog is okay (snappy, but not witty..) but the plot is just borderline stupid all the way. You have the requisite boring romance subplot that makes no sense, you have the typical 'genius creating advanced weaponry inside a freaking cave within a week' and totally uninspired 'because they own some companies and want moneyzzz' villains and there you go. I do think it works pretty well as a send up for fans like with Batman Begins, but as a standalone movie, it is just one cliche after another. Visually it's great but everything else felt rather rote. Still waiting for Wall-E for that next sure bet.
  25. Call me crazy, but I'd rather just go for the Wii, 360 and a Bluray drive for the PC or player. The PS3 needs to settle down with all its technical issues and its constant controller/software revisions. I also want to replace my Wii with one that has a hard drive..
