  1. Interesting rhythm in the bass at :27. One could hear it as a sort of syncopation, *but* as it's never really developed or heard again it seems out of place. The electric piano has something similar at :45, but in general I believe that rhythm would need to be further developed in order to really fit in well with the rest of the piece. Because right now it's something that many listeners would (understandably) hear as a mistake- and for all I know it is one. 0:37 - The echo/reverb highlights some juicy dissonances in the guitar and piano. Nice modern harmonies. In general however, I find the heavy reverb out of place for the genre. Piece really takes off at 2:07 with some nice solo work. Interesting timbres with the bari/muted trumpet pairings as well. I have a few minor quibbles, but overall I feel this is a pretty well done arrangement. YES
  2. Good stuff- Particularly loved the opening section, those long moments of silence were a great touch- it just had a delicate sort of sound. Very nice.
  3. Better luck next time? You talk like his goal was merely to please you.
  4. Love it. For some reason I feel cooler while listening to this. Go figure
  5. Groovy little piece. Wonderful ska-esque guitar sound and the organ solo really rocks. But...while shortness in and of itelf isn't bad, this particular piece feels very undeveloped. Developing the rhythms and melodies of this mix might have produced a much more satisfying sound, as is, it just feels a tad incomplete.
  6. Really like this- nice dreamy atmosphere. And alot of nice little touches help this one stand-out, like the wonderful piano passage at 1:51 or the well done climax at 4:00 Also, maybe it's just me, but at around the 2:30 mark the bass synth and percussion really starts to remind of the first Panzer Dragoon. Cool stuff. Nice new age sound.
  7. Reminds me of 70's prog but with a modern beat. I'm a sucker for analog stuff- and the moog-ish lead synth just made my day. Great ambient effects used throughout. Beat felt perhaps a little repetitive- but this is still a really groovy mix.
  8. Sort of a keyboard-oriented prog sound to this- really nice. Love the synth lead and bells- those bells in particularly add a great creepy atmosphere. Mazedude is the best there is as far as I'm concerned
  9. This is an incredible mix. God...that section at 2 minutes sounds so Harry Partch-ish- incredible. Mazedude is very quickly becoming my favorite mixer, and this actually may be my new favorite mix. Once again...incredible.
  10. Which makes him a pretty darn hard boss. *looks at thread topic*
  11. If anyone thinks that music theory is about what kind of music is right or wrong, then that person doesn't know much theory. Heh, judging from the reviews I was prepared to hear some sort of polytonal piece- but nothing of the sort. This is a very fun, upbeat and extremely well-sequenced...god that slap bass is incredible...piece. I can't believe I haven't reviewed more of your work, I've enjoyed your mixes for quite some time now. Keep up the good work.
  12. If you thought it was a good job, what's with the "No" in the JD forum? Anywho, very nicely done mix- probably the most authentic sounding jazz work on the site, at least that I've heard so far. Groovy stuff, man.
  13. Pretty groovy- as the judges noted, some clipping and the ending is a bit of letdown (although I don't have a clue what the "off notes" criticism was about), but overall this is a very smooth little number.
  14. Great stuff. I actually like the fret noises too- others would edit them out (in a never-ending quest to sound like everyone else) but they have a wonderful, unique and surreal sound. I've told you over IM how much I like this piece, and my opinion hasn't changed in the least.
  15. The white bird thingy at the end of Lagoon is...quite difficult.
  16. Once this gets going, it's a pretty groovy piece. The guitar lead and some of the quieter sections in the middle are really well pulled-off. There does seem to be some very minor static and popping sounds near the end of the first section (and then a few other places), but that's easy to overlook. Pretty solid first mix.
  17. Pretty straightforward elecronica- nothing terribly offensive or standout. But it succeeds at what it tries to be, so dance music fans should give it a listen.
  18. I remember listening to this one awhile back on Mazedude's site and wondering if he was going to submit it to oc. I really like this, nice atmosphere and superb composition. And check out his original stuff. I have alot of respect for Mazedude after hearing his 12-tone funk piece, anyone who can make 12-tone music sound so darn groovy is alright in my book.
  19. You know, Blind Guardian is one of the most famous modern power metal bands around, so I wouldn't exactly call them little known. But anyway- I'm still really annoyed that I missed their recent US tour. They passed through Dallas which is just an hour from where I live...and I missed it. Arggh!!
  20. So is that you playing then? I'm just curious since your profile says you don't play an instrument.
  21. The best part about this is probably the fantastic and very professional mixing on the guitar. The arrangement is nice too, although it's a bit repetitive. I got my hopes up when djp mentioned that you played recorder in this mix, but it plays a rather small role. I only sort of think I even heard it at all. Oh well... But anyway, very nice mix here.
  22. That would be rather nice. Multisampled vowels and consonants for voice parts and then maybe for solo voices too. Although that would probably be way out of my price range and have annoyingly large samples spread out over a several CDs. Sorta like these new strings sample sets that are starting to come out. Good lord they're expensive. I'll just have to stick with what I've got I suppose. But Sam Horns on the other hand look like a great buy.
