Awksijek Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Does a game have to be around for a certain amount of time before said game can be remixed? And in the same vein; if the first question is a yes, can any game be remixed, even if the game is not "popular"? (The game I have in mind is freeware and very, very obscure.) Thank you. Quote
Fishy Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 We had an FFX remix released before the game was even out, so age is irrelevant. And yes, if you read the submissions standards remixing obscure games is encouraged, as it increases awareness for them and gets more people playing more games. Freeware games is a dodgy issues though, I think the only freeware game we have remixes of is Cave Story, so you might want to ask one of the judges about what game it is specifically. Why not ask in the questions for judges thread, that would be an easy way to find out. Quote
Awksijek Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Good to hear. Looks like Trilby might get a bit of exposure hopefully. Quote
Fishy Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Sorry I added more to my answer after re-reading your question and seeing it was freeware, make sure you ask a judge before taking my word for it. Quote
Awksijek Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Will do. I appreciate the feedback. Quote
lazygecko Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 This applies mostly to people remixing material out of sheer nostalgia. Quote
lazygecko Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I tend to go by the policy that good music is good music, hence I've remixed soundtracks to games I haven't even played. Quote
Dhsu Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Hey, who's to say Trilby couldn't potentially have the best soundtrack you've ever heard? It could be the next Cheetahmen. Quote
Awksijek Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 If you haven't played/heard Trilby, you really owe to yourself to do so. If you're familiar with the weekly game review titled "Zero Punctuation", then you know of Yahtzee, creator of Trilby. Quote
Yoshi3gg Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Which game in the series are you planning to mix? 5 Days, Trilby's Notes, or Art of Theft? I ask because the readme for 5 Days say that the songs were just pilfered from RPG Maker 2000. I think the other games have original soundtracks, but it's something to look into before submitting. Awksijek Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 AoT, which is entirely original. Composed and MIDI-fied by Screen 7 (I think that's their name). EDIT: lol, names Quote
Yoshi3gg Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 AoT, which is entirely original. Composed and MIDI-fied by Screen 7 (I think that's their name). Okay, awesome. Still haven't gotten around to playing AoT, myself. Someday! Quote
OverCoat Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 The freeware issue is a case-by-case thing. You can't just remix what-the-hell ever game, it has to have achieved some kind of fame throughout the internet, like Cave Story, or the Touhou games [especially the touhou games], and Barkley Shut up and Jam: Gaiden hint hint Quote
Liontamer Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Just my opinion, but... If Ben Croshaw made the game, he's notable enough to me, thereby it's notable enough to me. That it was released a couple of months ago is fine. The music being arranged HAS to be music originally created for the game. If it's not, then it's not a viable source tune for an OC ReMix. Quote
Awksijek Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 Liontamer: Yeah, Ben Croshaw is pretty much a virtuoso when it comes to games. The soundtrack is freely available (as MIDIs) on Screen 7's website and they sound exactly the same as they appear on Trilby: The Art of Theft. OverCoat: The notability factor should not be a problem with this game. Yoshi3gg: It's a great game; definitely pick it up. Quote
