IRJustman
Edit: As for trolls, just be a hardass with them. If they're giving that much trouble, then they're not worth keeping on the server. I'll craft a new motd sometime soon - what rules should I put? I definitely want to insert a clause about acting in good faith & being considerate. The modus operandi of giving these guys enough rope to hang themselves only serves to tip your hands to the trolls, I have observed. On my own server, I have a zero-tolerance policy for these idiots. I would kill them the very instant they start doing something stupid. I have found that it nips the problem right in the bud. I mentioned it before, but I'll go ahead and throw the offer up again. I can lend a hand. I've become well versed on server management from running Ichi, shbouldn't be anything new. Likewise, only for my own server and assisting GM whenever he needs it. And furthermore, I only work with Linux or other Unix-system boxen as servers. I'd really like to keep the "No sticky-camping opaque spawn doors" rule there as well if possible. Amen, bruhthuh. If the MotD is going to list rules, put a note in on the MotD claiming that moderators and admins alike reserve the right to take action regardless of listed rules if they believe it to be in the best interest of the community.I remember from past experiences, if you don't state that staff reserves the right to take action against unlisted rules--there will be nuisances that will argue their way to no end, claiming the staff was unjustified, or try to weasel their way around rules. Also, some rules regarding offensive language should be in order On my own policy page at http://tf2.ian-justman.com: If I ask you to stop doing something or to do something' date=' even if it is not explicitly listed in the rules or runs contrary to what is currently listed, you must immediately comply. Do not question any decision I make. Step out of line and you may be banned.[/quote']I do not want an end-run around any policies I have in place or any silliness to push their limits. Like I said above, the act of "giving them enough rope to hang themselves" only validates what they are doing. Basically, this is my way of saying, "I mean business. You want to push the limit, that's your funeral; I won't stand for it." To include, but not limited to, racial slurs. And sexual preference. When last I checked, this isn't a preference. You cannot choose to be homosexual. You can, however, choose to be a homophobe, but I digress. I guess that doesn't quite cover it - here's attempt #5 Here is what I have on my own server's policy page: No xenophobic remarks or epithets. However, I also disclaim that, as server owner, it is entirely at my discretion what constitutes "xenophobic". At least, this covers the entire gamut for me. While on the subject of epithets, I also raise an issue that is very close to me. I include the word "retarded", used in terms of describing an intellectually-challenged person, used as a derisive term in my definition of "xenophobic". Calling someone "retarded" simply because they're different from you in any way simply is part-and-parcel "xenophobia". That said, there is no excuse to use it even on someone who is acting stupidly. If you have any questions about my position and how I arrived at it, please bring up the topic with me privately; I presently do not want to discuss my reasoning in public. Thank you for your attention. --IJ.

You can, however, choose to be a homophobe, but I digress. I don't like brussels sprouts. That's not a choice, my taste buds don't agree with them. I CAN eat them, but I strongly prefer not to. I don't think bark was implying anything in his comment. The definition of 'preference' speaks nothing of innateness or development.

Doing things that way also has the effect of dicking people over who were just messing around or honestly didn't realize how annoying/disruptive they're being. I think a warning first is a better idea in all but the most extreme cases.

I guess I see what you mean, but I'm talking about those like the one spray that this guy put down and kept dicking around saying "It's not a porn spray." Another was tesing the limits of the "no racial epithets" rules. In the latter case, the admins "gave them enough rope to hang themselves". If they did it on my server, they'd both be gone, no questions asked. I won't tolerate that kind of BS. --IJ.
Aeronaut
Doing things that way also has the effect of dicking people over who were just messing around or honestly didn't realize how annoying/disruptive they're being. I think a warning first is a better idea in all but the most extreme cases. Warnings are, in my opinion, perfectly fine as long as they're issued once. I don't play the game to hear people try to barter their way out of a kick/ban with sideways logic and "borderline" rule interpretation. I can't speak for others, but I feel as if arguments of any kind between admins and "wrongdoers" completely suck the fun out of the game and replace it with needless drama. If someone's warned by an admin--any admin--then I believe that admin should follow through accordingly and immediately if the warned person refuses to comply. That's my stance - if the person wants to be argumentative with an admin, then they're gone in my book, especially after a warning. There have been plenty of people who stopped acting up after a warning, so I feel it's not worth being too provocative unless the user acts up first, and in that case if he/she has been warned, you have every right to just ban him/her/them. Sir_Downunder
just got my hands on the game a few hours ago (i finally got around to getting it after sitting on the fence for months) if you see me on a random server, feel free to say hi
F4T4L
if anyone wants to be a super awesome buddy, can they please go here and view my TF2 replay and tell all of your friends? trying to unlock the 1000 views achievement for it. THANKS IN ADVANCE. that being said, my newest guilty pleasure in TF2 is the "Randomizer" mod, which gives you a random class, with random item loadouts. So you can get a scout with a Minigun, Jarate and Persian Persuader. (or the rancid loadout of a Heavy with Ali Baba Wee Booties/Wrangler/Kunai.) if there was an OCR Randomizer mod server for TF2 that'd JUST BE SWELL!1!~ PropHunt is fun too, but Randomizer is just too much crazy fun that challenges you in a new way and forces you to use crap you normally wouldn't. Personally, I've been playing Freak Fortress 2 lately... new version of Versus Saxton Hale. You may have noticed RED has turned into an FF2 server... Bahamut
I just found the create server button! I shall be testing out custom maps at some point to possibly widdle the list down.
ParanoidDrone
Speaking of custom maps, I found a map called koth_drogentote_1, which is a visually accurate replica of Meet the Medic. The geometry is ripped straight from Badwater's first point -- I can't tell if this was for the mapper's convenience or if they actually recycled it for MTM as well. There's limited space between the point and spawns, so spawncamping is probably going to be easier than usual, but each spawn has two distinct exits a fair distance apart to mitigate that. Bahamut
So I have the server! I will link the IP info and stuff probably in a new thread when it's ready for game playing (hopefully today). I'm still in the process of setting everything up.
