MisterBiggler Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 figured it'd be alright posting this here after not finding any threads on hip-hop after searching. i came by this track the a few days ago by way of a friend, and its been in my head quite a bit since then. the source tune is from Chrono Trigger; id name it, but you'll know as soon as the track starts. i can't say too much for the lyrical content in this particular song, but the track was produced by a guy named brandun deshay, who seems to be known for his chip-tune/VGM inspired tracks. anyway check it out; i figured folks here would appreciate it to some degree: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw68hYsSIIE brandun deshay: http://brandundeshay.com/ he's got all his works posted for free DL if you're interested. you can also punch his name into youtube and find a ton of his tracks. EDIT: felt like i had posted this in the wrong place, sorry bout that; thanks for moving it. Quote
Radiowar Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 wiz khalifa - never been cant think of any other examples atm. probably will become a more popular trend in the coming years this next generation of hip hop artists pretty clearly draw inspiration from vgm sounds Quote
MisterBiggler Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 ah this is the dude that did black & yellow; don't really know him for much else than that (and the remix purp & yellow which is great, go lakers ). good stuff, i'll have to look into him a bit more. Quote
The Vagrance Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 is another good one, as is Percee P - 2 Brothers from the Gutter Quote
DiGi Valentine Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Easily one of the best video game samples used in a rap song, and British rappers no less. Tune sampled Sonic the Hedgehog - Special Zone. Clever writing and flow + SEGA music = awesome. Quote
Mustin Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 So are you looking for stuff OUTSIDE of the VGM Remix community? Most impressed with that Tonedeff track. Quote
DCT Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I could never get into this song personally, but - Quote
Ramaniscence Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 There's a few on Game Over and Game Over II, not all are as good as Tonedeff, but...he's Tonedeff: Punch Out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8FIkAZbeVo Soul Calibur: (Maxi's Ending) Quote
RDX Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 this thread is amazing. i never even realized the sample in that one tonedeff track. Quote
Vigafray Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 This probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, but there are some mashup albums that are pretty good. PK Mao - Raptendo Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3 Team Teamwork - Ocarina of Rhyme Quote
MisterBiggler Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 that nas/bomberman 64 mashup was impressive; didn't think it would fit all that well. looking forward to listening to more of these. and I've really enjoyed most of everything people have been posting here, particularly tonedeff who i was unaware of until now (still got 'move in, ride out' in my head). anyway, great posts so far -- please post more as things come your way. Teslacrashed Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Maja - Great rapper from Phoenix, focuses on anime and video games. http://www.newschoolhiphop.com/ Random - A lot of video game stuff, he just did a whole album based on FF7 rap. http://megaran.com/ Godric Johnson - more video game themed rap. http://www.gamehopmusic.com/ Team Teamwork - They mix rap music with video game beats, unlike the previous guys who actually make their own rap on top of video game beats or original beats. http://teamteamwork.tumblr.com/ Safetywords - More video game themed hip hop. http://soundcloud.com/safetywords http://www.mediafire.com/?6ac4o4zfofvsfx9 - 8 bit mixed with Wu Tang music. Turbo - Has a number of Street Fighter based songs, other stuff is kinda random, all of it pretty good IMO, seeing as has made most of his music under the age of 21. http://www.youtube.com/user/ScrambleTv http://www.youtube.com/user/ScrambleTv Quote
CC Ricers Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 These are instrumentals but, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RadZTuZEKlM and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HTnIJnGIks I could never get into this song personally, but - I think the use of the tune is great. He turned the first 4 seconds that nobody cares about into a nice hook before the chorus. Quote
Ramaniscence Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I was listening to some Jedi Mind Tricks when I really no one mentioned the Army of Pharaohs Blood Tears song: Quote
DetectiveTuesday Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1-XI8tzx5I I was never sure where this sample came from... But it might be Final Fantasy? *shrug* XV is pretty dope, by the way. I'd definitely suggest checking out the Please, Hold mixtape. ah this is the dude that did black & yellow; don't really know him for much else than that (and the remix purp & yellow which is great, go lakers ). good stuff, i'll have to look into him a bit more. I suggest checking out the mixtape "How Fly" by Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa. It's a great collaborative effort and perhaps one of the best mixtapes of 2009 (at least, one of my favorites). I didn't love it the first time I listened, but upon second rotation I was just kinda like "this is chiiiillllll". Quote
ShadowBlade Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 ♪Beats got beats got beats, beats got beats got beats, beats in my head♪ Sorry this talk of hip-hop and video games reminded me of the (terrible) SFIII soundtrack. Quote
DetectiveTuesday Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Speaking of the (awesome) SFIII soundtrack: This dude MaxieDaMan has a bunch of dope hip-hop versions of Street Fighter tracks, as well as a bunch of Sonic tracks and a couple of Donkey Kong Country ones as well. Quote
