polar-
Hi peeps/peepers, I just finished my new recording studio here in Bodo, Norway. I've used around 350,000,- kroner (that's about 60,000,- $) so far. All that remains are some good synths, maybe more preamps and.. well, that's why i'm asking you guys. Have around 30,000,- $ left on my budget. Can't live without the LA-2A limiter/compressor AKG allround condenser Ddrum triggers on the drumset Stuff right now: Mac Pro Octocore UA LA-2A compressor UA Twin-Finity 710 (4) Preamps Mackie Onyx 1640i Genelecs Fender Supersonic amp Mesa Boogie Express amp Komplete 8 UAD Quad with plug-ins Pro Tools 10 Cubase 6.5 Omnisphere Trilian Superior Drummer 2 Markbass Compressore Handful Radial DI's Korg Triton Roland FP-7 2 AKG 414 XL-II Røde K-2 tube mic Bunch of SM 57's Pearl Export Ddrum Triggers Akai MPD Pad controller So got a pretty good setup now, but i'd like more synths and maybe some nice controllers. Both hardware and software. Been thinking about Moog Voyager XL, though expensive. Any suggestions for the remaining budget? Cheers, Eivind
SnappleMan
Looks very cool so far. If you're looking for a synth/controller you can't go wrong with Kronos.
Sixto
holy cow that's a sweet setup. since i don't know anything about synths and you have plenty of preamps (though maybe a couple of api-based pres or channel strips might be cool), i can only recommend more guitar amps! a few must-haves, imo, are the fender twin (though that super-sonic gets pretty close), vox ac30, some form of marshall plexi (59 slp, jmp, jtm45) marshall jcm800(!!!), and a whooole bunch of pedals, especially boutiquey stufff like fulltone pedals (they have a reeeeally nice tube-tape echo) i also think a super invaluable tool would be something like the new line6 james tyler variax. one guitar that models a whole bunch of really cool electric AND acoustic guitars, as well as a great sitar model. now that i think about it, how about the focusrite liquid channel? though i guess with the cash you have available you can probably just get more legit analog pres
Meteo Xavier
That's one of the most impressive setups from anyone I know around here - what will you do with it? Is this a commercial recording studio for others to come in and record or what do you have planned for it?
polar-
Yeah, it's certainly something else than my old bedroom setup I'll primarily be using it for my own bands and projects. Guess there will be some renting and lending to friends as well. I probably should do some remixes too Sixto: Yeah, I got a Randall and a Bugera 4x10, but a JCM800 has already been ordered. Is nice not to rely solely on Guitar Rig anymore. I'm not sure if i'll need the variax, I have a good strat, a Les Paul Custom and a couple of super strats (Ibanez) as well as a modified jazz bass that sounds sweet DI'ed. Regarding API's i've been thinking of some 512's for my drums, as of now i'm just using the build-in pre's on my Onyx desk.

Most people are lucky to even afford 1/100th of that.
Majiffy
$60,000 on a studio for personal projects is just nuts. Most people are lucky to even afford 1/100th of that. Ain't that the damned truth. I'm still working on my own personal (albeit, transportable) studio, and I'm looking at a grand total of no more than 2 grand. 4 mic preamps with phantom, ~6 mics, and a lot of isolating foam. dannthr
How about a great ribbon mic, like a Royer 121 or 122. Also, take a look at the A-Designs Pacifica--it has enough gain to power a ribbon, it has a impedance DI input on the front, which sounds killer! It's a spectacular pre. I love pairing the 414 with a ribbon, you get all the detail on the AKG and all the impact on the ribbon--killer for hand percussion! Ribbons also make killer vocal mikes when you want that present velvety sound.
dannthr
Oh and you'll love a Royer 121 when micing your guitar amps!
polar-
Yeah, I really want a good ribbon mic. Gonna check out the Royer 121! Been looking for a U47, but it's kinda hard to find one in good condition here in Norway. Thanks for the tip!
polar-
Ordered a DSI Prophet 08 and a Moog Little Phatty Stage II today! Oh the joys of christmas! Also bought a used Roland D-50 + PG-1000 programmer on ebay since last time. Really like it for super cheesy 80's sounds Testing out the D-50: The lovely Prophet:
Frederic Petitpas
sweetest amp I've experienced lately was the Jazz Chorus - I'm late in the train but wow for clean
dannthr
Oh yeah, forgot, Zebra 2 and Diva--since you asked about Synths in your OP. Omnisphere is cool, but Zebra 2 and Diva are ridiculous. Be sure to post more gear porn when you're through putting everything together. Don't forget really great room treatment and additional monitors (5.1, etc). Most people are lucky to even afford 1/100th of that. Tons of pros build a simple little studio for only 20,000 bucks. Dude, that's a lot of money. Of course, there was a time when studios were big and everything was recorded on analog tape and they would spend half a million bucks making a big studio. There's still some magic about those recording studios (some which still exist now; it's just all digital recording now, of course)... Frederic Petitpas
Tons of pros build a simple little studio for only 20,000 bucks. With 20k you get a drum, an amp, 3 guitars a bass and a few picks. And 1/100th of that price is 600$, so i don't see how most people couldn't afford that if they are into music. That's the price of a cymbal. Building the place in your backyard is a few thousands not counting the acoustic treatment. When you invest you probably gonna buy good DAW with a console and a few expensive plugings for a few thousands + the computer; you're probably at 30k here. Throw a Neuman in there and some speakers and you don't even have any hardware yet beside one amp and a few instruments. Well it's how I see it.. Brandon Strader
I've got a pro level studio and I would wager it costed less than 10k all in Still not always enough for OCR though, so any noobs wanting to get posted, you definitely want to go an extra 1k or so... try maybe 11k worth of studio equipment. That might do it.
Frederic Petitpas
Nah you just get an old fruity loop for 5$ and I'm not sure you got a pro-level studio dude post it in the post-your-studio thread please

No, no, I'm not talking about a studio with a whole bunch of instruments. I'm talking about pro recording studios. Ones where you have more compressors and EQs and such with maybe one keyboard or something.

Ones where you have more compressors and EQs and such with maybe one keyboard or something. Yes well hardware compressors and EQs can be expensive. Even software.. I really want this piece of software and it's 80$ RE-2A which is an emulation of what the dude bought hardware: Can't live without the LA-2A limiter/compressor I really wonder how much is the hardware when the soft is 80$. I've seen compressors cost something like 30k in Steve Vai's studio.
polar-
Ok comrades, just wanted to update you all on how my studio is shaping up. Just got some nice shiny stuff like the DSI Prophet 08 and a Moog Little Phatty. Also picked up som nice older stuff like the classic Roland D-50. Oh yeah, i also bought two vintage cassette recorders, Tandberg 310 for '76 so i can get some old school tape compression if necessary. Check it out: (im still looking for nice vintage gear - recommendations accepted
