  1. I was thinking more like electronic ARPs and delayed metallic things to liven up some more.
  2. I would choose different leads and add more zircon-y rhythmic electronic stuff. Otherwise its a surprisingly good start.
  3. I'm bumping this and I don't care. I've worked too hard to let it slide into ruin now.
  4. www.sf2midi.com is a large collection, yes, and they've recently, graciously, updated their server, but their collection is way TOO large, so finding a quality instrument is like playing the penny lottery. Lets see these VSTs.
  5. So if I went through the process of doing this, what do you suppose my odds are that the WIP will be listened to and helpfully critiqued? Its been my unfortunate experience that WIP promises go unfilfilled, and if I'm lucky enough to get a response, it clearly wasn't worth the months of waiting and prodding, thus discouraging progress and remixing altogether.
  6. Very well. http://www.savefile.com/files/1550438 http://www.savefile.com/files/1550440 http://www.savefile.com/files/1550442 http://www.savefile.com/files/1550448 These are my practice songs since I started this topic. 1 and 2 sound very much the same, I was trying to go for a Ys sound which is heavy in bass and drums and usually in D minor. The 3rd I was playing with a synth VST and 4 I was going for a Baten Kaitos kinda song. I'm trying to learn to change up the songs quickly so that when I want to do it, I can do it fairly easily.
  7. Well yeah, thats obvious. I already have a shitload of MIDIs I look through on FL. The problem is not knowing to look through them and identify problems, the problem is fixing them. Its applying them, as you say, that I'm having trouble doing. I can copy them all I want, which I don't, but when its all said and done, the song still just doesn't sound right. Im already inspired, its the technical knowledge I lack. Rules of thumb, proper techniques and such. All I find on arranging are how to do it with sheet music in classical music formats. Plus no one has the balls to midify Baten Kaitos Origins.
  8. Ok, so I've made as many of those requested changes as I could and here is the result: http://www.savefile.com/files/1549969 Frankly, I don't like the changes, maybe its because I've listened to both versions like a million times, and therefore heard each instrument 2 million times, but I think those changes really suck the life out of the song. The drop at the end was my idea but I don't think I did it very well at all. What I did was completely cut the instruments except for the bells in addition to the reverb and delay because I was still getting resonance coming through the cut. Any ideas on how I can improve this? Thanks
  9. I'll give the suggestions a shot, but I don't know how I'll be able to implement them and make them sound better. I'm not changing the fade-out though. Its sort of a chapter cliffhanger, plus I tried doing it the other way and it was way too hard to get it to work, so I did this instead.
  10. Last one for TODAY? C'mon man, you buried mine under FIVE of your own WIPs. As for the song itself. Its not bad, but it does little to really grab my attention or do the source material justice. The beats are complicated and pretty well-orchestrated on their own merits, but c'mon, very little of this actually sounds like the song it's based on and turning one of RPG's best ambient Sanctuary themes into a throbbing DnB just seems like bad taste. At least throw some crystalline pianos and choirs on it for God's sakes. This is a foundation piece if nothing else. Don't screw with the beat at all, just put something more on it so it sounds like you're doing the Sanctuary theme justice.
  11. I'm just bumping this because I think someone is trying to intentionally bury my post and make it hard for others to see and comment.
  12. Vocals: What chanting? I only use the synth vox to complete the aural soundscape of the piece. This particular vox is weird, I will give you that, because it only sounds good in the range I'm using it in and I think it really sounds good, but if I go higher, it will undoubtedly ruin it. Horn: Seriously? Thats one of the best French Horn soundfonts I've ever heard. I was never going for super-realistic here, but I never felt it sounded too MIDI. Additionally, I wouldn't know what other instrument would better substitute it. Dynamics: Ok, I'm interested here. Dynamics are not my strong suit, but go on. Where do you think I should play with the dynamics some? I was already planning on going back to put in (or simulate) the humanizer. Also, go on about the strings in the repeating section. I'm not quite sure what you mean. Drum: Drum? You mean the cymbal crash? I suppose I did overuse it. I'll try your suggestions, but if it lessens the impact of the song, I'll need to disregard it. Strange suggestions, but very thorough and exactly what I'm looking for.
  13. I figured the cascading piano was going to be a problem, I wonder if I should phase it out by 2:20? I can't say I feel the same way about 1:15, to me that makes a good early bridge and perfectly sets up the next part. The slow attack on the strings didn't seem to bother me, in fact it sounds a bit more fluid than if it coordinated perfectly with the piano. The parts that I felt needed to be fixed were the sudden "bump" in 3:43 and should I maybe just cut off the ending part in 2:47 and just jump straight into REQUIEM FOR A PREDICAMENT? That could work better, but I'm not sure.
  14. I'm extremely excited. Like the Lufia mix I had on here, I started this one last summer but couldn't finish it. Today, out of nowhere, I sat down to retool it and ended up nearly finishing it much to my design. This mix doesn't have nearly the same problems as the last Lufia mix (that my ears could pick up anyway) and I felt like everything fell much better in place here. This is a mix of EPIC POEM TO SACRED DEATH, REQUIEM TO A PREDICAMENT and I even threw in RENA'S THEME from Star Ocean 2. I think there's a fourth one in there too. Anyway, my aim was to make it like Lenneth was wandering through the dark and disturbing forest of Yggdrasil and got lost trying to find Yggdrasil. At the end of the song, she finally discovers Yggdrasil (seemingly by accident) and the song ends as a chapter would. It has a Chrono Cross sound to it and although I may have overdone it some, it has a really dark and dense sound that I'm personally pretty proud of. Proud though I am, there's still the possibility I'm way off the mark, so I submit it here. The acoustic guitar and piano are run through KOMPAKT, everything else are soundfonts. I reckon this song is 95% complete with a few things I know I need to fix up before submitting to the Judge's Panel. Here is the song. I look forward to comments and criticisms. http://www.savefile.com/files/1539089
  15. I've BEEN screwing around trying to find my own method for the last 3 years and its not going anywhere fast. I've been missing out on basics and essentials to composing and writing on Fruity Loops and therefore I need sme procedures and methods. I mean c'mon, there's got to be some system to how all those video game composers can write 2-3 CDs of music in a few months.
  16. I'm trying to really up my songwriting skills through FruityLoops and I need some help doing it. I've somehow written and completed songs before, but mostly out of luck. I desperately need to get organized and I was wondering if anyone who writes and completes a lot of stuff on Fruity Loops could share with me their methods of doing so. Where to start, where to go next, where to finish, etc. Specifically, I've relied too much on the step sequencer and I want to be able to write like Motoi Sakuraba. I know i'm not Motoi Sakuraba, but thats what I've chosen as my model for songwriting. The core areas I need to improve are making up intros, transitions and phasing, instrumentation and balancing them correctly and dressing up sections of songs so they are dramatic or subtle enough. I don't have any examples right now, but I can get some if I need some. Thanks!
  17. If I could get a shitload of good webspace, I'd upload all the ones I have. I've been collecting good ones from the big sites for years and I've amassed a quality collection.
  18. Holy shit! One of these days you're going to have to show me how you did all that. I can't come close to that quality yet...
  19. Wow, I leave for a day..... I believe I used bits of Lufia II's ending, Lufia II's sad theme and Pufifia and something else I can't find. Of course it sounds super mush, why do you think I'm here? As for the demo, its a far superior improvement. However, I cannot take any credit for that since I did not do any work on it.
  20. I actually started this demo like almost a year ago before I was playing with dynamics. I didn't really have a story in mind, I just wanted to pay tribute to a few good songs that don't get any attention here and I wanted to do that in a style I wasn't used to doing before, mainly because thats what I had to work with. But I got stuck on it and haven't been able to get to work on it. I think it has a unique sound to it, and I really like the multiple voices. I was told I needed to "interpret" my remix attempts, so here is me trying to interpret.
  21. I sent it straight to your email address.
  22. Sure, I'll send it later tonight when/if I get done with school and work.
  23. Very well, the mix is done in Fruity Loops. I often take for granted how often that program is used. Additionally, thank you for the compliments. I really don't think just mixing and processing is going to fly with the judges on this though. The instrumentation is definitely lacking in setting up the emotions the song displays. I don't even really know where to start re-tooling it correctly, so I'd really like a collaborator. Also, I forgot to mention the low string cut off early in the song was not intentional. Kompakt cut the strings at that point for some reason.
  24. I have a basic, sort of an "outline" of a Lufia II remix that I would need help in finishing. I started it a while back and one of my friends tried to pick it up, but he got slammed with important real-life stuff to work on and had to pull out. I was just going to take it back and finish it myself, however I also am going to find that almost impossible to do with my schedule, so I'm looking for someone who's interested to help me finish it correctly. Here's what needs to be done. The basic song structure is already finished, but there is very little instrumentation to complement the melody and structure. The very end of the song needs something to wrap it up with. It needs some more "life" to it if you will. Pretty much anything you could see that you could fix up and make better, I'm willing to accept. If you're interested, I'll work with you on AIM or across email or whatever however I can. I just can't go back into the song itself right now to fix it. Here is the song attempt in question: Its a couple ending bits from Lufia I and II. http://www.savefile.com/files/1492120
  25. Linking to sites that provided soundfonts and samples for free is a legality issue, I don't think this would hurt it more.
