OCR01194 - *YES* Street Fighter 2 'Go Home and Be a Family Man'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Okay. this is the original, only it sounds worse. the guitar sounds really bad to my ear. sounds dry and sounds poorly recorded. frankly, the solo doesnt impress me, not so much because of the playing, but because of the sound of the guitar, the mixing, the recording. goddamnit. this mix becomes incredibly cool at 1:45. it more or less stays cool. the harmonics are very nice. I'm very tempted to give you a yes, because after 1:45 kicks ass. but the first half of your mix sucks. i want to hear you do it right and keep the second half as it is. i know someone will YES it and my vote will be meaningless, but here goes a NO -
i really really enjoy the industrial sound effects, however this mix is missing some meat. it could use more reverb in the counterpoint synths, and it could use more consistency in the beat, and more content in the interlude sections. very interesting start, but it needs more. NO
-
the orchestra stabs strike me as really really ugly. I agree with analoq, this has an interesting feel, and it isnt bad to listen to, but the production values are too low, it sounds amateurish and, eh what's the word you kids are using these days...."ghetto." so pay more attention to "detail" and your mix will be less "whack." NO

As good as the percussion is, this is just too sparsely arranged. also, the dynamics are a little bland. not enough motion. NO
-
the mix is hurting for some effects, and some variation. this is just too close to the original, and the lead is too dry. Sounds a little too GM. add some texture and color with dynamics and reverb, give it a more organic feel. NO

OCR01200 - *YES* Legend of Zelda 'Into the Golden Sunset'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
yeah..the equiptment is hurting this mix. we need some variety in velocity, some sustain, and maybe a better sample if you're going to go solo piano. NO much better. feels more natural, and while the sound quality aint perfect, this mix is much more presentable. YES -
OCR01201 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Truth in Forgiveness Await'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Hmm...interesting arrangement, the only bad i see is A the sample/sound quality, B occasional bad notes. everything sounds stringy, the samples sound GM. however, the arrangement is really quite engaging, it goes so many places that i didn't expect, and it's well played. I really wish better instruments and a better encoding were used. but as it is, YES -
This mix has better dynamics than most of the mixes that get posted. You'd be amazed by what wonders some dynamic tinkering will do for a remix. While this remix is largely a series of repetitions of the original, the dynamics and the instrumentation keep it from getting boring. Well done. YES
-
hmm...this is an interesting mix, i like the feel, and the vocal samples really add quite a bit unfortunately there are some problems, the song is too repetitive and doesnt build enough. also, there are some harmonic flubs here and there. polish it off and add some more and this would be a cool mix. NO
-
muddy low end, crunch abrasive guitar, poor mastering, weak arrangement, abrupt half-assed ending. work on those things. NO
-
wow. the recording or encoding is bothering me a bit, it's not as rich as it should be, but the playing, arrangement, song, is really top notch. Haven't heard anything like it on OCR yet. i love the pan pipes. YES
-
no, my man-cooter is doing just fine. i think.
-
NO. The feel of the mix is identical to the original, while the notes are not. to me, it isnt a remix. regardless of the reasons, the overall sentiment on this mix is no, so i'm going to lock this with 6 NOs and 0 Yeses
-
Interesting, not bad at all. i think the mixer did a good job with the original, but since the original is only 2 bars long, a mix demands serious liberties to be taken in order for it to be listenable. as i said, i think the artist does a lot of interesting things, but the song is still quite repetitive, and there arent enough major changes for the mix to stay fresh for 5 minutes. try a key change, a solo over the bassline, anything to mix it up even more. NO

*NO* Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 'Requiem to Death'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Sound quality isnt great...the piano sounds muddy. Performance isnt great...sounds awfully forced and labored. there are lots of awkward pauses and rhythmical flubs. the arrangement isnt bad, but the execution lacks. NO -
the arrangement is constant and dizzying. there's very little going on at all. the beat never changes. does nothing new or interesting, and the harmony is oversimplified. NO
-
After so much forplay, i was expecting unbelievable sex. Instead she tells me she wants to wait until she's married. well, enjoy waiting. NO
-
yeah...this is just the original in 4/4. you have to present something new, elaborate, etc. NO
-
the piano and flute sound awful. completely inorganic and dry, not to mention the flute has some serious velocity and notation issues. sound quality is seriously hurting. NO
-
piano is ugly, the intro is crowded and distorted. bah...i'm hearing fairly constant distortion...there's very little arrangement. it's just the drums. NO
-
the bass notes sometimes overlap causing a very ugly mud. it's nice and chill, but like prot said, there's not a whole lot presented here. NO
-
wow...the patch that replaces the electric power chords sucks. these sound all like simple dry generic analog synths the drums are nothing interesting. there's very little arrangement going on. this needs lots of work in the sound department. NO

*NO* Super Mario World 'Donut Plains Aspen Colorado'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
i like the wurlitzer, but the drums are too loud, and there are some rhythmical issues. the vocals dont sound like they fit at all. is this jazz or is it dance? the drums are incredibly akward. NO -
the performance isn't great, the arrangement is nil, and the drums dominate the high-end, and there is no low end. NO

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 'Final Zone (Final Hour)'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
i agree that the piano sounds dry and lifeless. the arrangement isn't bad to listen to, but it doesn't bring much new to the table. i really don't like the string lead, and those bends sound especially awkward. Not mustin's most polished. NO
