  1. Beautiful stuff, Elan; glad to see you finally posted! Keep 'em coming! Don't pass this one up!
  2. AVGN's stuff is excellent every time.
  3. Um, OK, but shut up next time. I don't know why you have to be rude, but I've got nothing to do with it. Instead of leaving a note explaining your rudeness, just delete your rudeness. I was awake.
  4. http://www.zophar.net/download_file/13459 - Track 3 Ditto. The 1:19 section was too sparse, and I also thought the treble there was a bit too much. It took until 2:10 for something I could recognize to come in, and the textures were still too sparse and basic in a lot of ways; the core groove being flimsy didn't help this. Overall, the track sounds fairly good in a vacuum, but I have absolutely no clue what you're mixing from Blaster Master. Track 3 from the NSF was all I could vaguely make out. Other areas sounded similar to the style of Blaster Masters melodies, but nothing I could overtly recognize. More than 50% of the arrangement needs to overtly involve the source tune music for me to pass it. Even if the VGM was used for most of the mix, the textures and production weren't up to your usual sophistication and quality. Gotta pass on this one, but looking forward to checking out your next subs, as it's great to have you doing more in the community again! NO
  5. I obviously judged this mix, but up until reading the writeup and Dave's point about the arrangement, it didn't really hit home with me that this was a Zeal mix. The creativity of the arrangement ideas here was a testament to how you can never call a theme overmixed; someone from the community will always find a new and interesting way to interpret a tired and true theme, and I'm always collectively proud of everyone involved when it happens. Nice work on this one, Joren, great energy!

  11. ReMixer name: Piano Forte Real name: Alexander Menke Email address: kriegor790@gmx.net Website : www.myspace.com/pianofortress Userid: 16276 Name of game: Final Fantasy Adventure Name of song arranged: Let the heart sing with the melody Link to the remix: download "For Amanda" Comment: Hey everyone! Around six months ago I've started to do a remix for FFA. I thought an orchestral interpretation of the song would do it but I was wrong. Got stuck and ran out of ideas. Pretty much because the source contains only 23 seconds of melody before it repeats itself. Anyway, a few days ago I decided to give it another try. This time piano only. And I'm very pleased with the outcome. Already shared the remix with some people at #ocrwip and #ocremix who helped me to improve the song here and there. Thanks to you guys! So, basically I composed some new melodies to stretch the length of the remix, keeping in mind that they had to flow perfectly into the source song. I hope you can spot the original melody =D. Enjoy! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Awesome source tune choice. Simple but beautiful; there are some other piano renditions of this around the net, and it translates very well. http://www.zophar.net/download_file/15343 - Track 16 Overall volume was too quiet, IMO, but it's purposefully genteel. This would sound pretty strong if the piano was richer. Piano sample isn't the bees knees. Initially, I thought it got the job done. But listening longer, I've heard samples like this exposed much worse, but over the long-haul, I actually don't think the sound quality holds up well enough. I'd also argue the arrangement was too liberal. I liked what I recognized though. It's not enough to play original stuff on top of a foundation using similar rhythms to the original, even if the source tune is short. Stick more closely to the theme while creating variations and incorporate the theme overtly for more than 50% of the track. Correct me if I'm wrong on the arrangement though, guys. Regardless, the production did drag this down enough. Hope we hear more from you, Alexander! NO
  12. Gecko's alive and well. He should still submit music, but after some drawn out judgments that were NOed, he convinced himself that his subs gave us a headache. The community's loss. As for what's most arranged by the ReMixers, I never grew up on Castlevania, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, etc., so I have no nostalgia bias, but those tracks stand out for good reason. We have several "Terra" mixes but only two "One-Winged Angel" mixes. Stop being stupid. Also, I'd love more ReMixes from lesser known/recognized game soundtracks. Cheetahmen II! Gimme some!
  13. Remixers: HoboKa (main composition) and Cryil the Wolf (bassline) game remixed: FF7 track: Desire remix: Profound Desire (original huh? x_x) link: Description: For this particular track, I decided to give it a jazzy style, mixed with orchestral and, of course, VG elements. This track's intended to have a longing feel - much like the original, so it's definately not a happy one. Not that my music is ever all that happy. Also, I had Cryil do the bassline for me - seeing as my bass skills are something next to nonexistant. So, if this gets accepted, I believe that Cyril deserves a round of applause, because (in my humble opinion) he did a sexy job on this here track. Hope to see the results semi soon --------------------------------------------------------------- There is no track on the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack called "Desire". Looked into it and found "Fulfilled Desire" from Crisis Core, which is an arranged medley of several of the more anthemic FF7 pieces. This sub sounds mostly like an "Anxious Heart"/"Main Theme" mix, which is at the beginning of "Fulfilled Desire". http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FF7_psf.rar - 104 "Anxious Heart" & 201 "Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII" Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Original Soundtrack - Not to come off dismissive or angry, as I'm not, but this is encountering the same problems as usual. When you stay cover-ish with the source, the ideas sound musical. Once you attempt to really arrange the notes or insert your own original ideas, the writing is awkward and has no flow. The production here was OK, although the textures were on the sparse side. Cool bass work from Cyril. I mean, keep at it, but over the long haul you've demonstrated you don't have the ear for writing original melodies. This doesn't sound awful, but it has no direction until 2:30 follows the source more closely. You have a decent ear for giving an existing piece a new mood & style, but not for writing all new material. I'd focus on creating interpretive covers if I were you; you might be able to find your niche that way. NO

Performed by: Brendan McElroy (Bass), Alex Goodman (Guitar), Brendan Swanson (Piano), Spencer Cheyne (Drums); Featuring: Matt MacLean (Trumpet), Brent Mah (Alto Sax), Brett McDonald (Tenor Sax), Sarah Matheson (Baritone Sax). Mixed and recorded live at The Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club (January 3, 2009) by Spencer Cheyne at Crossover studios. Produced by Brendan McElroy. A tribute to one of Street Fighter's underrated characters; I hope you all like it! A couple things I'll be changing (after listening back to the recording), however, it's live so there's nothing I can do. I'll be working on expanding this arrangment to a full big band soon enough. Also, I'll be trying to keep ontop of these submissions; hopefully OCRemix will be seeing a whole lot more of us. Brendan McElroy The Runaway Five www.therunawayfive.com www.myspace.com/therunawayfive2 ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/10295 - "Dee Jay Stage" Performance should have been tighter, but it was solid enough; good energy. Breakdown of where I could pick out the source: :38-1:10, 1:12-1:13.5, 1:18-1:19.5, 2:01.75-2:16, 3:24.5-3:26, 4:19-4:35, 4:37-5:12 The track was 5:13-long and that was about 106.25 seconds or about 34% of the track. There were some sections like :23-:37, 2:35-2:46 where the supporting instrumentation had a similar feel to the original, but just chord progressions it seems. Issue again like the previous FF6 submission is that there's too much liberal comping at the expense of explicitly using the source tune. I'm never gonna pass anything with the source tune less than 50% of the track. No hate on the track, and during a live performance, I'm sure y'all are just going in whatever direction the music's taking you. But, again, to be good to go for OCR, it needs to incorporate the actual theme more. Looking forward to your next one, guys! NO

My brother and I had tons of fun remixing this...our original intent was to work on it a lil more, but we both decided to submit it to see what you J's think about it. Thanks again and all the best guys, take care. -phijayy ------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/16011 - (36) "Chaos Angel Act 1" The piano & strings lacked realism, especially the piano; they didn't sound terrible, but the piano was a weak point. Melody finally kicked in at :53. The mixing seemed odd at 1:07 as the overall sound was kind of distant & lo-fi in a bad way, while the "tss" sound of the beats was louder than the leads. Seemed like the track lacked mids, but that's just looking at Winamp's EQ visualization. Going back to the boom-tss pattern at 3:21 was OK for a brief moment since it quickly got changed up but the arrangement eventually went back into rehashing ideas from the first few minutes. Near 6-minutes was pushing it badly with this amount of overall repetition. Refine the core organic-minded sounds, and trim this down. You could honestly make a tighter 3 minute piece instead of a 5:49-long one. Keep at it; y'all are showing some potential. NO
  16. Contact Information * Remixer Name: Monobrow * Real Name: Katie K. Submission Information * Game: Tales of Symphonia * Source Track: Search a Seal (Tethe alla & Sylvarant) Remix This is a song for the Summoning of Spirits album from Tales of Symphonia. I worked on this song because, well, out of the 50+ songs worked on in this project, for some reason, even years and years and years and years and years after the SoS' start, no one else claimed these tracks even though you probably hear them more than any track throughout the game (it's the goddamn dungeon music) Anyway, this remix is pretty straight forward, although I thought the source material IMO was kind of awkward to work with. But, like the originals, it grew on me, as I hope this song does with whoever listens to it. Oh yeah, and I don't get sole credit, it goes as follows, I think I worked this out... Monobrow feat: AeroZ, injury, and Protricity: Sebastian - was a way cool dude like always, and played live cello for me throughout the song. Starla - was a sweetheart and contributed her lovely voice for a choir part I wrote in the middle of the song, because I really really suck at singing, and she sure don't. Ari - at the last minute, was full of awesome and reworked over my old drums with his stuff and added some flair to them etc.... At the time I thought I had about two days to finish the song (thanks Kyle ;-o), so thanks to him for whipping up those drums as fast as he did, aside from some technical problems. Also special thanks to Posibolt for going to the trouble of figuring out that crazy harpsichord (wtf) part for me from the source, because I was too damn lazy, even though I didn't really end up needing it, I still put it in the song though! (you can barely barely hear it because it's covered up by starla's voice and Seb's cello and um, strings, drums, piano, harp... etc. etc. etc. Also thanks to Kureejii Lea for naming this because I had no idea what to call it... I just called it thatsong.mp3 for months. And special thanks to dhsu for... that bass thing... yeah! I sure did need a lot of help! Anyway, enjoy. The end. --------------------------------------------------------------- Tales of Symphonia Original Soundtrack - (405) "Search a seal ~Tethe Alla~" & (203) "Search a seal ~Sylvarant~" Piano realism could use some work, and while the drum writing was good, the drums sounds themselves weren't the best fit; no synergy. As a result, sections like :41-1:09 & 3:00-3:27 felt too sparse despite everything going on with the drums, but I'd need another J to elaborate on that. They were serviceable though, which is more than I can say for half the rejected subs nowadays. Otherwise though, a fairly solid arrangement of the two "Search a Seal" variations. Sebastian's cello was a huge highlight. A long time ago, Ari would basically call Starla a talentless MIDI ripper in #ocremix. Small world to see them involved on the same track, but that's ancient dramarama for you. Hands across America! Re: the drums & piano, the textures could have used some polishing, but this wasn't bad. Looking forward to seeing what else Katie can do as she keeps improving. YES
  17. Remixer: Sixto Sounds Game Remixed: Donkey Kong Country 2 Track Remixed: Swanky's Swing *****Project Track!!!***** Giving credit where it's due, this was heavily inspired by Steve Vai's "The Animal." I tried giving this track the same feel but also wanted to do some things a little different. The horns are probably horrible since I know nothing about brass instruments, but it's something that just sounded good in my head. Hope it sounds good to your ears. ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/9728 - "Swanky's Swing" Steve Vai - "The Animal" Well I like the track, but comparing this to "The Animal", it uses too much from a non-VG source to be allowed. I checked out the live performance; the bassline from 1:12-1:33 & 1:49-2:10 is the important part. The breakdown of where I heard that bassline part adapted for the mix: :10-:20, :58-1:05, 1:08-1:28.75 (11 secs worth), 2:00-2:41, 2:46-2:48, 2:51-3:12, 3:17-3:22, 3:54-4:01.75 104.75 seconds or used during 41.57% of the track. It's not a foreground element, but it's an integral part of the mix, and it's way beyond "extremely limited usage". And to be honest, from 2:00-3:22, the source was an afterthought compared to "The Animal." Maybe the whole thing breaks 50% source usage, but even if so, I'd say 2:00-3:22 could probably use at least something to refer back to the original. In any case, this is probably a done deal and it's a great combination of the two tracks, but not an OC ReMix. Looks like this one's gonna be album exclusive. NO Override
  18. ReMixer Name: Krow Submission Info: Game: Golden Sun: The Lost Age Song: Yallam Additional Info: Game Boy Advance game; the composer is Motoi Sakuraba Original Soundtrack: http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/gba/index-gr.html (it should be on that page, they have it spelled wrong as "Yallem", though) I have to say, I was quite shocked when I only saw one Golden Sun ReMix for the first Golden Sun, up on the site. Both game have amazing soundtracks and I would love to see more music from the Golden Sun games. As my first submission to OCRemix, I picked a Golden Sun song. I believe I picked this because it is simple song to start with, but it's just put together so nicely, in all it's simplicity. It was definitely an easy song to shape to how I wanted, and I think I got across most of what I wanted to do. I know it can be much better, however I'm sort of limited to less high-quality sounds. I really enjoyed working with this one though, so expect to see some more Golden Sun music. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Golden Sun: The Lost Age - "Yallam" The additive piano writing was a nice touch, and the length was extended but the overall structure was too similar to the original. The sounds & ideas are upgraded, but still too similar. The bowed strings and piano chords didn't sound terrible, but lacked realism. Good base here, and the latter half was more expansive, but do more with interpreting the source tune itself and create a more unique mood compared to the original. NO
  19. Link to mix: Note: This mix is part of the Final Fantasy 4 Arrange Project - Echoes of Betrayal, Light of Redemption. Please to not post until after the project is release if the submission is approved by the Judges. Thanks! Contact Information: * Remixer Name - Level 99 * Real Name - Stevo Bortz * Email Address - Level99RemixTeam@gmail.com * Website - none existing right now * User ID - 13318 Submission Information: * Games Arranged - Final Fantasy 4 (Final Fantasy 4 JAP SNES) * Individual Song Arranged - Dancing Calcobrena * Composer information and original soundtrack already available on OCRemix.org * Notes about the mix: This is my remix of Dancing Calcobrena from FF4 for the FF4 arrange project. It took me about 10 months of ongoing (and not-so-ongoing) work to get nailed down, thanks in large part to OA and Avaris constantly getting on my back to push the writing as far as I could possibly take it. I honestly don't know what was going through my head in terms of inspiration when I worked on the musical theme and ambience for this mix, so I'll say in large part that I wanted a more epic-love-making-meets-almost-phil-collins-style song. And so, after making that terrible phrase, I'll let the song speak for itself. ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/9797 - (36) "Dancing Calobrena" Well, the source tune is only 26 seconds, but at a brisk pace, so there's a lot of room for expansion. Opened up with some original writing with some cameos of the source quietly in the background. Still, quite a lot of noodling until finally getting to the heart of the arrangement. Source kicked in at 1:34. I know it was going for a dour vibe, but melodically, it felt flat. I'd appreciate some more opinions on that. The mixing during the chorus at 2:00 felt odd. Everything was very distant. During the soloing at 2:56, the leads seemed further away than the percussion. 3:24-3:38 did some liberal stuff that wasn't quite the source, but I saw what you were generally going for. You did use the source tune in a lot of unconventional ways. Going for the breakdown, you needed 148 seconds' worth to be over 50% and I had 146 seconds of overt usage: :13-:17, :34.5-:38, 1:16-1:25, 1:34-1:38, 1:42-1:46, 1:49-1:53, 1:56-2:26.75, 2:28-2:56 (18 secs worth), 2:59.5-3:00.5, 3:24.25-3:31.5, 3:35-3:36.5, 3:52-4:13, 4:17-4:19, 4:20-4:56 Even though I'd sign off on the arrangement being kosher with a few more seconds of source (I'm not as is), I thought the overall arrangement, while creative, was generally too liberal and could use some additional source elements to ground it. The extended, 90%-original intro could use some more references to the source, for example. The arrangement concerns could be addressed fairly easily; the production may be a little tougher. I'd like to hear some more opinions on the mixing/sound balance, but after refining those issues, this could be good to go. NO (resubmit) EDIT (6/9): Having heard a more recent mixing by audio fidelity, the production definitely sounds better and thus passable. I still can't YES it based on the arrangement, and agreed with AnSo regarding the guitar tone, even though I could easily live with that. The only issue I'd need addressed is something to bump the source usage over the top. Rather than teeter over the line with 2 seconds, I'd recommend some sort of backing part or decent sized reference that could easily be inserted into the intro.
  20. Hi. Here's the link to the submission: As to the info requested: ReMixer Name: Freelance Samurai Real Name: Nuno Povoa email: npovoa@gmail.com website: www.freelancesamurai.com user id: 27548 Name of game: Arkanoid Individual song arranged: main theme About the mix: based on the game intro "After the mother ship 'arkanoid' was destroyed, a spacecraft 'vaus' scrambled away from it. But only to be trapped in space warped by someone...", inspiration from the idea of escaping said 'warped space' and subsequent lonely journey home, in a tiny small spacecraft. Cheers and thanks! Nuno ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://old.exotica.org.uk/tunes/archive/C64Music/MUSICIANS/G/Galway_Martin/Arkanoid_PSID.sid - Track 2 Well, it's definitely a unique take on the source in an interesting style. The way the samples were used didn't expose them too badly. I'd just say develop this more. 1:15 sounded like a sloppy loop point. Right now, this functions more like a brief, minimalist cue than a stand-alone piece. I'm cool with a piece that stays in first gear, but it still needs to develop and evolve more. 2:10 is not really enough length to get it done. If you'd be willing to work on this further. See what else you can do with it while continuing to develop the arrangement of the theme. NO
  21. Source Video: Remixer: Sixto Sounds Game Remixed: Animal Crossing Track Remixed: KK Surf *******Project Track!!!******* Another track I made for JoeCam's Animal Crossing project. This track was a ton of fun. I rarely record anything but rock remixes so this was quite a change. I had huge inspiration from the Stevie Ray Vaughan/Dick Dale remake of the classic surf instrumental "Pipeline." Simple setup, really. A Strat into a cranked Fender Twin dripping wet with plenty of that warm spring reverb, simple bass line and drum section, and of course, the clap track. Gotta have the clap track. Anyway, enough from me. Hope you enjoy. Hang ten! --------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/16084 - (173) "Surfin' K.K." Production was solid, so there's nothing else to be said there. As expansive as this arrangement is compared to the source, the repetitive beats and overall dynamics were on the boring side. I would have done more with this arrangement. Still, Animal Crossing is extremely barebones and this reasonably expanded it. The soloing after the 2-minute mark was needed, though there still wasn't much dynamic contrast. Needed more melodic interpretation and further development of the ideas. No problem if this passes, but it should have been more, IMO. It's decent, but if I YESed, it would definitely be because I gave Juan a free pass. Almost no one on the panel remembers The Number Sixes when they subbed a Zelda surf mix which was well performed, but too repetitive as well; maybe it's something about the genre, but ultimately I doubt it. Surf can wurk. NO (resubmit)
