  1. You PM/IM a judge. Likelihood of receiving feedback is low simply because we don't have much time for anything, and judging itself is volunteer work. So you try and hope to receive feedback. You could also PM mixers you like that are forum regulars and hope that you get something.

Keyboard at :33 sounded ultra-flimsy and fake. Cool ideas at 1:07 arranging the "Launch Base" chorus. IMO, either the verse or the chorus section could use more drive with a more overtly melodic section, rather than sticking strictly with an unassuming groove the whole way through. But that's just my opinion; if these sounds were refined to sound less robotic, this would be a lot stronger and might not need much change in terms of the overall pacing. Good move back into the main verse of the source at 1:41. Repeats :33's section verbatim at 1:57. At this rate, you were just trying to coast on the previous ideas with 0 evolution in the arrangement or sound choices made, which was boring. Ending at 3:22 was a decent enough idea, but the transition was too sudden; you might want to make the transition a bit more gradual. You have a decent enough interpretive and personalized groove, but you need to develop the arrangement further. Don't use 1.5 minutes' worth of ideas, then loop them into a 3.5 minute mix; things just drag out. Keep working on refining your production skills via the ReMixing forum and get more fan feedback before you send stuff down the pipe by posting your work-in-progress at our Works forum. Promising stuff if you continue in an evolving, creative direction and work on increasing the sound quality. NO

  4. If you want to get technical, Claudio & Simona were only engaged at that point. As for this mix, tre excellent. Thanks to zircon for hooking me up with the source tune. It made flagging this for DP all the more easy. The arrangement and production on this one were both top notch, and Carrie's vocals were very ethereal. I agree that this is Daniel's best work yet.

  7. *OverCoat (Plok - "Telefon Akrilic"): Won't lie in that I actually preferred this before some of the changes that were done. The stuttering in the intro was cooler in the previous version. Still noticeable light pops in several place during the quiet section (e.g. 1:31-1:32, 1:36-1:37, 1:43-1:44, 1:48). Then ending at 2:15 drags and starts sounding...unmusical. I'd have preferred the previous ending. Honestly though, those are all minor thing based on taste. If you wanna call this the done deal, it's a done deal. Nice work, bro. *Andy Jayne (L.E.D. Storm - "Smooth Operand"): What's an Operand? Timing's fairly rigid with the percussion and bassline which in this context doesn't sound very good. The overall texture is decent but feels like it needs something to help pad it out. I like the concept. There's definitely a brief melody in the original that comes in after the groove has gone on for a while; it's ripe for expansion/interpretation and would fit nicely with the short melodic ideas you've got so far. In fact, the 1:32-long WIP so far actually sounds like a good lead-in to an eventual transition to that source melody. In any case, lots of promise here. Not feeling the mechanical timing, but that can be worked on. *Another Soundscape (Spider-Man & The X-Men - "Storm Follin"): That's some pretty nice drum programming, and I like the personalization ideas so far. Beyond the background structure, I hope more ideas directly derived from the source tune are introduced as well. There's some good stuff in the SPC starting at 1:17 that I'm sure would fit well. Beyond 1:17, you honestly have your pick as to what other ideas from the original you wanna build upon, as there are a ton of composition ideas to choose from. So it goes when working with Follin's excellent material. Keep up the progress, bro. *VQ (Scumball - WIP 5a): Minimalist in that the instrumentation isn't meant to punch you in the face. Still love the phrasing of the strings first used from :55-1:00. Could be brighter though, they lack a lot of presence. Same as 1:50 when they're brought back in. When the beatwork patterns switched up at 1:55 left a fair amount of empty space; the pattern is interesting, but you still need something to fill things out a bit more for that background. Not a fan of the tone on those low bowed strings at 3:23. Just something about them that doesn't seem to fit within the track. The track might need some compression to beef it up, but an overall volume raise may be all you really need. I'd ask someone better suited to answer questions about that. I see the deliberate pacing you're going for, and also hear the dynamic shifts you're going for from section to section. IMO though, the dynamic changes aren't pronounced enough to really drive the track along and give it a sense of going from point A to B. Holler at someone for a second opinion. I think with a few more ideas put into place, this would realize a lot more of its potential, Witold. Good stuff so far. While the arrangement does indeed feel on the liberal side, you can always rein it back in by using some of the original ideas more closely/overtly; perhaps you may discover an idea for padding out the track that way.

We just opened up our new production studio in Houston, and I've been playing around with our software and all of the mixing and mastering equipment in it. I'm so excited I could pee. I've missed out on a few days of work because I caught the crap that's been going around in our wind ensemble at school, so I decided that I'd have a little fun... When I'm not gigging or playing my saxophone, I'm typically working on my electric style. I've been inspired by the remixes of Judge Jules and DJ Oscar as of late, who are pretty notorious for using a lot of spontaneous triplet patterns in a lot of their mixes. Judge Jules's music is noisy, full of base, and just downright cool. DJ Oscar's music is hip and very danceable. I wanted to make something that combined the two styles into a game of my choice... Bubble Bobble is so my favorite game of all time that I didn't even need the original song to remind me of its melodic structure (if you can say it had any). By level 40, you were ready to mute the damn TV because the song was soooo repetitive, but hey. We still loved it, and we played it. Cause nobody does it more hardcore than Bub. Where most people generally need illegal substances to have a good time, ...no. Not Bub. He's got bubbles. If someone's giving him crap on the dance floor, all he's gotta do is burp up a bubble and throw it at him. Yeah, it's that easy. ...don't be jealous... .........anyways, it's hard to remix such a cutesy-repetitive melody and make it all trancy/electric/danceable. But, I think that I did it okay. In the short amount of time it took me to produce this, I was able to include a lot of very cool things. One that I'm most proud of is my extreme contrast in the middle where it jumps into a cool, noisy bass line that recapitulates the bass line at the beginning. It's like Bub walked into Club Space or something... which is why I called it that. All kidding aside, this is a total change from what I normally do. However, if you're interested in hearing more of what I've been doing, just let me know. I'm pretty sure that this track won't be up to par with how you guys judge and everything... but at least I gave it one more shot and let you hear how I roll with it up in here. So, here you go. It's mixed, mastered, loud, noisy, fun, trance, Bubble Bobble... yeah, can't ask for much more than that. The sounds just sound generic like they're merely out of the box, and those flimsy, ultra-generic drumloops and claps get old really fast. You could spend more time making the synths sound more unique and providing more textural depth. The arrangement is decent, and I love the melody on the keyboard, but this doesn't offer a unique enough take on the source. 1:42 is up there on my weird shit-o-meter. It's cool that you're trying to emulate a style, but comparing it even to something like Mr. Oiso's "Flat Beat", the synth wankery here is boring. In tandem with those lifeless beats, I'll be honest that it just feels like wasted time until going solidly back to the theme at 2:41. 2:58 was stronger in terms of bolstering the melody with some synth pads, but everything else was still vanilla. Yeah, vanilla's the overall impression. Sorry, Brian. I much liked your CT mix from a few months ago, and I hate to sound like a hater. The concept is strong, but the execution is flat and doesn't deliver. It doesn't have to be mega-loud/full/crammed with parts, but this is still empty and devoid of any real energy or substance. Hopefully some other judges will have some more practical advice for you. NO

Everything sounded extra flimsy and mechanical. Perhaps this was specifically meant to sound like an upgraded version for a next-gen Commodore computer, but that doesn't mean the sounds are good enough to get posted. Why is this hosted on Megaupload? In any case, I believe I saw you say, Alex, that you wanted to learn how to make music so you could fulfill your own requests. Nice work. The delay effect on "all" at the end of Mike's voice acting was very cheesily done. Make the delay effect faster so that the voice rolls into the delays trailing off of it. Campy stuff, but ultra-solid voice work from MikeZ. The guy sounds like he could rip your balls off. Cool ambiance for the intro. The strings at 1:07 sounded a bit distant and the sample quality was a little fakey, but they worked well in tandem with the solitary sounding piano notes. Good textures there. Why it segued into some bleh electronic stuff, I can't be sure. There's nothing wrong with the premise, but it's just not put together well. REALLY cheap sounding beats and sampling at 1:54. Reminiscent of Parasite Eve to tell you the truth, just not as well produced. If the beats weren't so loud over the rest of the music, it would have been much better, as you could hardly hear the melodic material on the strings arranging the source. Why were you burying the actual arrangement component of the track like that? Get the sound balance working more in your favor for that section. Regardless of that, your textures were overly simplistic and need more depth. At 2:34, the lead synth and processing on it felt ultra-bland. MikeZ at 3:24 was way too quiet, then the effects on the Mu-hahas were way too cornball. The track cut off abruptly at 3:37. Honestly, if you filled in the gaps for this piece and honed the production on this, it could be good, but right now you're not at that level. The jumpy structure will turn some judges off, but the variation and arrangement ideas were in the right place. Over time, you'll learn how to add more finesse to this rough execution. You show promise though, Alex. Keep at it. NO

Aside from some moments of light flooding, this was decently pulled off. Doesn't pass for a real organ of course, but for what it is, it sounds relatively good. Right now though, the arrangement is vastly underdeveloped. Only 2:13-long, it doesn't say much in the little time given. Not that it has to, but it also doesn't sound very melodic, on account of the tempo. Once you familiarize yourself with the theme, you hear how there are at least some new ideas with respect to the writing. Beyond adapting it to the instrument though, there's still little interpretation given to the theme in the big picture. Expand the composition with more ideas. Interesting first sub though.   16. Also, I just discovered yesterday that the RSS feed as used in Gmail only cycles through 4 mixes including Lizardino (which works fine there). Dunno if that's just on my end, or if it really doesn't cycle through all of the recent 10.

  19. Well, when you resub something that got a form rejection letter, there's basically nowhere to go but up. Yeah, you forgot to link or attach the actual sub when you sent it last. I've since gotten nice enough to actually let people know when they make that flub. The arrangement relies on personalization via the new instrument choices, because a lot of the part writing is copied verbatim or near-verbatim from the original. [looks at zircon's vote] I love it when I agree without having looked at what someone said first. Yeah, the production choices are pretty awkward sounding. The overall volume is way too low, and all of the sounds seem distant. Yeah, the chords of the strings from :34-:45 are all wrong. Bowed strings from 1:25-1:30 definitely played the wrong chord as well. This is at least going in the right direction in terms of personalization, but further interpretation would only help this. Modify the writing/patterns of the supporting parts that stick so closely to the original so that you have more interpretation on that level in lieu of messing around with the melody. Definitely agreed with zircon & JonT's criticisms on all levels. Like JiggyJ alluded to, you definitely show good potential Brian, so keep learning what you can to improve your craft. Then you'll be one of the few and the proud in a year or two to listen to your old work and go "Damn, my stuff is way better now." On the arrangement side, keep going for more interpretation, first and foremost. NO

  21. Talking to Compyfox a week ago about the material that OCR accepts, he was still convinced that the judges panel is looking for Hollywood-level production, so I sent him this mix. It won't convince him of anything, but I try.
