  1. Engaging intro here. Remember it from way back when, going through the first 700 mixes one by one. Nowadays, the beatwork here comes across as pretty cookie-cutter, but back then the groove was interesting and decidedly different in terms of the treatment of the theme. Good changeups in the instumentation at 2:30; I wish it stayed more like that instead of bringing back the beatwork at 2:42 to keep the feel different. Arrangement felt a bit repetitive after that, and the weird compression here wasn't doing any favors, but another changeup at 3:18 kept things fresh and inserted some new ideas into the picture before going back to the "Match BGM" arrangement for the last section. Interesting choice of textures, pulled off very well for the time. Cool example of old school stuff.
  2. Heh. Dated, but definitely a quirky piece o' work. Short, but an interesting take on the theme.
  3. We've got dedicated community peeps who are workin' on it. They're doing an excellent job so far. When it's eventually finished, it'll be more comprehensive and informative than you'd expect.
  4. Name: Vitus Game Remixed: Gunsmoke Song: Title Theme: Remix Name: The Wild East Comments: The Gunsmoke theme run through some tribal drumming, chanting and electronic squelches. Enjoy.\ -------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/nsf/gunsmoke.zip - Track 1 Interesting approach. The soundscape was flooded and muddy, but I give you props for going crazy with it. Decent power to the beats, and some decent synth effects in there. Tribal chanting at :49 didn't come through clearly at all, and simply cluttered up the track; quite the sonic soup ya got here. Kept going for a while without referencing the Gun.Smoke source before bringing it back with an 8-bit lead at 1:59, complete with funky effects on the lead. Props for using effects to try and personalize the theme. Percussion changeup at 2:39 was really sloppy, and the textures got way worse, with shrill sustained synth leads that lasted long past their sell-by date until 3:00. 3:09 saw a shift to some new beatwork with the sampled tribal chanting returning. Wow, what a mess at 3:30 with all those sounds. They didn't harmonize well, and the production lead to yet another fugly, soupy mess until the end. You've got some of the right ideas in terms of trying to personalize the presentation. I thought you relied on the drum grooves and sampled chants too much to carry the brunt of the track. The melodic lead could have used some further fleshing out, either by layering it with more stuff or supplying some countermelodic writing; anything to give it some more meat. On the production side, you need to learn how to better separate your sounds so that they don't mush together to readily. Decent stuff, but it needs a lot more work. Make use of the ReMixing and Works forums here to learn more and obtain more feedback in the future. NO
  5. http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ffmq - "Battle 1" (ffmq-07.spc) Oh yeah, I know this source. One of the few good tracks from FFMQ in my opinion. Opening synths were pretty lame, but the guitar and drums entering at :11 were relatively good, especially with those synths toned down a bit by that point. The guitar tone felt a little bland once it took the lead at :26, and the drums definitely need more power to 'em, like zircon pointed out. There's definitely some sour notes going on with the guitar harmonization around :33-:34. The mixing was rough, and the lead guitar ends up bleeding together with the synths when they're together from :38-:48. Like zircon mentioned, the lead guitar needs to cut through more vs. the rest of the sounds. Now around :50, it's hard to hear much besides the guitars and drums. The bassline's pretty obscured. Doesn't sound like there's much other instrumentation here to pad the track; rather the whole track is produced so densely that the lack of other subtle anchoring parts isn't supposed to be so noticeable. That's why it has a loud, but relatively empty texture. Nothing awful here, but better separation of the sounds would let all the pieces of the puzzle be heard. 2:31 switched over to some better textures where the various parts at least stood apart to the ear more. The drumwork still felt a little simplistic, but the performance clicked together much better. Both the solo and the source melody under the solo were really cool, but need a warmer, more ethereal sound; it's too dry right now. Good last section for the close. The arrangement was fairly solid. Bit too by-the-numbers in terms of the genre adaptation to start, but you added a lot of embellishments and subtle changes to personalize things before getting into safer, more interpretive territory with the nice solo work at 1:52 and never looking back. See what revisions you can make in light of zirc's suggestions to get the overall package sounding stronger; he really broke it down well. Good luck on this, Alex; creatively, this is leaps and bounds ahead of your previous FFMQ final battle submission 2 years ago. NO (refine/resubmit)

  7. Your ReMixer name: Meteo Xavier (Or Meteo X) Your real name: Jeff Lawhead Your email address: MeteoX9999@aol.com I have no website and no knowledge of my userid Name of game(s) ReMixed: Super Mario 64 Name of individual song(s) ReMixed: The File Selection Theme (I don't know the actual title) Your own comments etc. etc.: Good time of the day, I humbly wish to submit what I consider to be a "remix" for Super Mario 64's File Selection Theme. I wanted to originally submit this as part of the Super Mario remix project I saw last week but I failed to secure an opening. The song title is "Amateur Optimism", based on what I had as I remixed the song. The intended vision (for lack of a better word concerning a song) for this song was to be a mellow, warm, tribute to the introductionry theme, much as I remember Super Mario 64 being. The original piece was quite simple and small but delicious, like an M&M, quite good material to be remixed. The remix is intended to be something of an introduction itself - not a huge grand exploration into something so small. The song builds quite quickly which I believe gives it that intended effect. It continues the original motif through most of the song so as to keep it grounded in the original style and feel of the song. I will also say that while I feel I achieved my original goal, I do feel there are concerns with its construction. I had to drag out one note for another 8th to get the rhythm and grove working. The piano parts and drums do not variate much at all, they are mostly to create that mellow warm background accompanying the main motif, but I could see (or hear) how it might be distracting. I am also concerned about the sound quality of the flute I used, especially when it gets really high up. My final concern would be the ending chords which I feel sounds like it was slapped together. I did work on it for many hours trying to correct it as best I could, but in the end this is as good as I know how to get it. And so here is a modest remix for a modest song, I hope it is good enough for your website. My equipment: FruityLoops 4 Kompakt (Guitars, Piano, medium strings) Soundfonts: (Bass, Drums, High strings, french horn, flute) Cymbals were samples ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/usf/sm64usf.rar - 18 "File Select" No, I think it's safe to say it's not good enough. People say it's difficult to be objective about their art. I agree, but at the same time it's not that difficult to be MORE objective than usual about one's art when forced to. Downright default-grade/thin samples to open it up, sparse textures, REALLY rigid sequencing, 112kbps encoding for a sub-3min track... compare this with anything recently posted, bro. You can't believe this is anywhere near the bar. Indeed, "amateur optimism" rings true. Now that I've come across as a piece of shit, onto the meat of the criticisms. Although the melodic component of the mix was cribbed verbatim and not interpreted at all (and it screams MIDI-rip), you had some decent additive ideas, first the countermelodic piano at :31, then the woodwind at :53. Good original ideas, though I'm not hearing any meaningful interpretation of the actual source material. The game melody is just relegated to the background. The next original passage from 1:35-1:57 has nothing but the most tangential of tangential connections to the source tune, if any at all. 1:57 until the end goes back to the formula of "repetitive, verbatim source melody + original passages on top". You've got the right idea in terms of adding your own original writing, but you forgot to actually interpret the Super Mario 64 material. Don't lose site of what this site is supposed to be about. Your primary goal is to interpret the source material you chose, not merely build other stuff on top of an untouched game melody. Based off this sub though, you have the potential to improve once your energies are focused in the right direction. Scour the ReMixing forum to learn how to use your sounds better and get some better free soundfonts to use, and post your stuff in the Works forum if you aren't already doing so. You need more feedback before you submit in the future. NO
  8. Remix Name: Giana's Homecoming Original song: Giana Sister's (High Score) Remixer Name: Polar-, 23 year old male, Norway Hello good people! I was supposed to submit this tune some months ago, but it ended up taking up space on my harddrive until recently when I decided to add some touches to it. I feel it's now ready to be submitted, and I hope you like it Giana Sisters was one of the first games I got for my c64, and I remember being fond of this melody when I was a kid. -------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.exotica.org.uk/tunes/archive/C64Music/MUSICIANS/H/Huelsbeck_Chris/Great_Giana_Sisters_PSID.sid - SIDtune 2/8 Source tune is only about :48 seconds long, so there was loads of room for expansion. I thought the track felt texturally empty at times, but the overall creativity of the arrangement carried this one over the line. Interesting opening (I say that a lot, but I love hearing something different, and many submitters tend to deliver). Good phatty bass and solid, understated percussion. Whatever instrument that was at :24 was flooding the soundfield a bit along with the pads. Nothing that was a dealbreaker, but the effects there could have been scaled back a bit. Good addition of the delicate piano at :56. Some vocals quietly entered at 1:44 along with an electric guitar and crystalline...e-piano? By about 2:10 when the guitar took center stage with some liberally arranged material, I felt it could have been bumped up a bit, but you're going for something more consistently chill. Thankfully the percussion & pad groove changed at 2:16 and again at 2:32, as the previous pattern was wearing out its welcome fast and would have made the track feel dynamically flat. Very serene vocals entering at 2:48. Started to get pretty far away from arranging the hi-score theme, in terms of interpreting the melodic content. I would have liked the source melody to still be referenced somewhere, perhaps with the acoustic guitars, to ground the final few minutes more with Giana Sisters, but the first half took care of the interpretation matters, while the second half meshed seamlessly with the first. Very smooth, bro. YES

Those of you familiar with Follin's work in video game music know the man is an exemplary artist. Even before I specifically knew who he was, music of Follin's from Spider-Man & The X-Men for the SNES caught my attention, followed by other games like Silver Surfer, Solstice, Treasure Master, and Plok! Stepping up beyond the sound limitations of older game systems and working with real-sounding instrumentation, his work and his creativity continues to be impressive. Song of the Week staffers and friends Kaleb Grace and 'Ili "CHz" Butterfield were talking about Follin's decision when Kaleb came up with the idea of doing a tribute remix project of Follin's work. Damn good idea, as there are a lot of people who are fans of his work. If you're a fan of Follin's music, join up and let's make a tribute. We're gonna make this pretty simple. This is a community-wide project, very Hands Across America. Any talented artists that are interested are open to join up: OCR, VGMix, OUS, DoD/TheShizz, OLR, R:K:O, AMIGAremix, VGMusic, 2A03, hell even some doujins, everybody. No one is disallowed from participating due to any history you have with anyone else; all are welcome with me. If you have some internet drama that prevents you from participating, fuck you in advance! The only standards involved here are to produce quality music. Provided a bunch of you don't somehow pick the same material, any track originally written/composed by Tim Follin, video game or non-video game, is fair game for you to choose within this project. Aside from mere ports he's done of others' tunes, pick anything. We'll be checking to make sure whatever you pick was written or at least arranged by Follin, so provide specifics here on what you're choosing as soon as you know. Stuff that happens to be written by Tim's younger brother Geoff Follin is fine as well. The quality control will be fairly strict. If I don't know you, I'll ask to hear samples of your recent work or research you myself. If you're not completely capable of what you're doing and aren't a solid artist in the community yet, I will tell you point blank here that you likely don't qualify, and you likely shouldn't waste your time trying to participate. With that said, collaborations are heavily encouraged. Tracks featuring live instrumentation are also heavily encouraged, as Follin wished he knew how to play real instruments. There will be no WIP deadlines; whoever's going to come through will come through. We are shooting for at least 80 minutes worth of music and a minimum of 12 tracks, preferably 20 or more arrangements. We've got a near-full discography of Tim Follin's work here in order to help anyone who may need to look around to find material to arrange. Even if you're unfamiliar with his work, chances are you will find something of his that appeals to you. In the meantime, you are more than welcome to post your interest in the thread here and let people know what you'll be doing. Provided you guys come through, there are other plans for this project that will be put into motion. On behalf of co-directors CHz & Kaleb Grace, speaking to anyone and everyone from around the world who contributes, thank you in advance for your participation. -------------------------------------------- Take a look at Tim Follin's near-complete discography: http://wiki.sotw.info/index.php?title=User:Liontamer/Dirge_for_the_Follin/Follin_Discography Play the music in Winamp with these plug-ins: Amiga/MOD & Spectrum/AY - http://www.deliplayer.com/dlredir.php?obj=dp2 (STANDALONE PLAYER) C64/SID, Gameboy/GBS, Genesis/VGZ, NES/NSF, SNES/SPC(RSN) - http://www.chipamp.org/ (Plug-in bundle) In-progress tracklist: 1. I used some samples from old nintendo 8bits that you might hear in the background. //Lonian ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/gsf/mmzero2_gsf.rar - "Departure" DarkeSword certainly set a high bar for this source. The only reason I know this one is because of "Stranger in the Desert". Interesting, albeit rigidly-sequenced opening. It does alter the feel of the original's intro though. Picked up with some thick beats, an electrosynth on countermelody and a chiptune-ish lead at :13. The mixing's a bit too loud; the textures of the track are still simplistic despite how loud the piece is. Actually, that basically sums up the entire track. There's no substance to the harmonic or countermelodic ideas, and the writing for the background is also too simple. There's just not enough development or sophistication presented in the arrangement or production. NO

The game play is awesome, the music is way ahead of it's time, and the graphics are awesome. We at Priceless Productions love the sound track of this game to death and it was very hard to pick just one song to remix, especially with our busy producing schedule. But we all came down to the decision of actually taking a sample from one of the stages, and building from there...and this is what we got. A nice chill beat that you can just sit back, bob your head, and just enjoy the music. Be on the look out for us as we continue to make more beats, everything from Hip-hop, R&B, Reggaeton...etc. and hell, we'll see if we can't remix another classic track from one of our favorite video games. This version is slightly louder, sorry about the mix up.... -------------------------------------------------- http://project2612.org/download.php?id=55 - "Round 4-1 - Pre-Song - Intension" Definitely too much reliance on direct sampling the original. Opened up with the original game audio before doubling the droning sound in the background with a second drone and adding some beats at :18. Some near-monotone beats are brought in at :35, then some OMG-phatter beats at :52. Nothing at all so far besides adding shit on top of the original. The direct sourcing seemingly ends at 1:09, but the game audio can still be heard faintly in the background until 1:26, returning faintly at 2:17. Meanwhile, the track chugs along with no melody, merely continuing the groove based on the supporting elements of the original. Not much direct working with the melody beyond that point. Goes primarily back to the direct sampling from 2:50 until the end. Definitely a submissions violation, but I didn't check it all the way through during the initial evaluation. You can't rely this much on sampling the original game audio for ANY track you plan to submit here. That being said, there also wasn't enough substance or actual attempt to rearrange the source material when the original game audio wasn't in play. Read our Submissions Standards more throughly before submitting in the future. NO OVERRIDE

I just did it to experiment and play around a little. Eventually, I started working on new projects and kinda forgot about this song, and thanks to some computer problems, I lost the song and the flp file, so I could never work on it again without starting all the way back over. Just a couple of weeks ago, my girlfriend found a bunch of my old OCR CDs and we gave them a listen. Thats when I found out the she actually burnt this remix on to a CD. After listening to if for a while, she convinced me to try to submit it. ...So, here it is. Now, I kinda consider the submission a long-shot because, back when I made it, I had a God awful hard time with EQing and making my samples sound more realistic and whatnot, so I fear that will probably be an issue for you guys. That being said, I am really relying on the amount of creativity I put in this remix. Hopefully, you guys will look past the sample quality and focus more on what I've done to make this song different. Thanks for reading this long explanation and I hope you guys enjoy it. You will find my remix posted on my website.

(Secret of Mana 1 ftw) After that I immediately started working on rearranging the theme. I really liked what I had but I was completely dry in terms of rhythms . Knowing that Skrypnyk is bad ace at rhythms I PM'ed him. He did a friggin awesome job on em and the bass. I really like the xtra flava his rythms added to the song. For a lot of the sounds in this I used steampipe2 from Reaktor 5. Thanks for listening. Skrypnyk sez: Andrew Skrypnyk djskrypnyk@gmail.com ID: 6278 avaris PMed me interested in a quick collab. I was all for it, so we PMed each other tossing back and forth ideas, and about a week later, violin!.....vitamin? electric guitar? Something like that.... --------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/gbs/ffa.zip - Track 1 Opening piano sounded really rigid. Rim hits and...what are those, bass kicks?...brought in at :25 sounded out of place. Really stiff sequencing and the textures aren't fleshed out or cohesive. Source melody started at :50 with some light woodwind doubling. The pace here was really plodding, and something that was meant to have organic sounds is crippled by the stiff sequencing. I did like the writing on the woodwind at 1:41, solid stuff there that sat more comfortably into the texture. The arrangement also lacked direction until 2:21 went for another iteration of the source melody; much better lead choice there, plus the changes in your supporting instrumentation provided a stronger texture. The grooves you lay down were still plodding and repetitive over the long haul. The tracks ends stronger than it starts, but for the first half there needs to be a lot of TLC for the sequencing, more attention to how the various instruments sound in tandem, and the arrangement could use more direction. Get your groove on, but vary it up more over the long run. NO

To bad I can't submit it I thought since I didn't realize you could submit project ReMixes. Then zircon told me and here I am. I started it as a d'n'b "on drugs" kinda song but the day after I felt that I needed something more since I wasn't that good at electronic music to begin with. Thus the ethinc part was born. My pride and joy. And even more "on drugs". Actually that's pretty much what I wanted to say. This is a remix of an annoying theme on drugs. Where do you come from? All I remember from judging your previous stuff, Mattias, is that it definitely wasn't at this level. The FF8 one was only good on the arrangement, the FF5 one was promising overall, but the Little Samson one was a lot messier. Here, you really upped your game. The sounds are somewhat basic, but it's the sophisticated textures and constantly evolving groove that make it sound like a quirky piece of goodness. Way to hold it down. 3:56-3:58 has some glitchy crud at the end that would need to be fixed, but otherwise, nice work. I don't even like FF7's soundtrack that much, to be honest, even though the source tune is alright. But this kicks some ass on the arrangement side, giving much more variation and substance to the original, plus the production is a capable piece of work. From a comparative standpoint with the source, I appreciate the skill here immensely. Here's hoping you stay consistent. YES
