  2. That policy came about after Xenogears "A Star Freezes Over" was subbed. It's not a retroactive policy, so anything posted before that with similar usage of non-game music stayed.

(stolen from The Wingless) *Soundfield is very lo-fi, instruments are thin, and the sample quality is subpar *Sequencing is very rigid, not compensating for the sample quality *Textures are too sparse *Arrangement shows some creativity within the genre adaptation with some solid instrumentation concepts and new writing, but the execution is holding it back NO
  4. Contact Info : - ReMixer Name : SideCut - Email Adress : voltz@bluemail.ch Remix Info : - Final Fantasy 6 - Terra's Theme - Hi, this is the first remix I send you, hope you'll like it. I made it in 2001 only using a Roland JX-305, and at the time I was unaware of the existence of Overclocked ReMix. I only have this audio file left on which I can't work a lot, cause I lost most of my MIDI files in 2002, and since then, haven't composed anything, having been a bit disgusted. But I still have a few remixes I think I could share with you. I'll send them in the next weeks. FOLLOW-UP (1/8): Hi, just a message to say that I changed a bit the encoding (url hasn't changed), because I noticed that there were some clicks and glitches (not present in my *.wav file) around between 1:00 and 1:40. I tried to reencode at 112k fixed rate, but strangely the problems always occur exactly at the same place. I tried at 96k, but it produces some "bass drum chorus" (one kick is normal, then the next is flanged, then the next is flanged otherwise, then the next isn't, then...). So finally, the 112 variable is the best result I can get without sacrifying too much. ------------------------------------------------------ http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ff6 - "Tina" (ff6-201.spc) The harsh truth: Should have subbed it in 2001. The standards were lower and this would have been a decent-enough fit back in the day based on this genre adaptation. Viewing it with today's eyes though, the textures are pretty thin and generic. The arrangement does morph around a bit over time, but constantly focuses on the same few bars of the source without keeping things varied or interesting enough. There's some gradual build going on with more elements introducing themselves over time followed by some straightforward but observable dynamic shifts, but none of that mitigated those texture or arrangement issues, IMO. EDIT (1/8): The new encoding doesn't affect the arrangement and thereby doesn't affect the judgement. NO
  5. ReMixer: Nordin Real Name: Jeffrey Nordin Email: remix@jsquaredproductions.com Website: www.nordin1.com/ Game: Quake 2 Songs: Quad Machine, Operation Overlord, Rage, Kill Ratio, and Decent into Cerberon Add. Info: Quake 2 was, of course, Id software's glorious FPS from wayback in 1997. The music was done by Sonic Mayhem and was quite good, hence the compulsion to honor it in ReMix form. Misc.: In the mix I'm playing Drums whereas my brother is playing guitar and bass, mixing duties were handled by my father and I was responsible for the actual arrangement. I hope you enjoy this underappreciated soundtrack now delivered in head-banging metal quality!
  6. Hey everybody, CONTACT INFO: Damon Campbell (Blue Magic) bluemagic1984@msn.com My site: http://www.angelfire.com/blues2/bluemagic/ REMIX INFO: Chrono Cross "Tower or Ruin" You can find the song posted up on my site. Enjoy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/Chrono_Cross_psf.rar - 215 "Dead Sea - Tower of Ruin" Cool source tune. Sounds Parasite Eve-ish, except there's no cheesily fake vox, and the woodwinds are clearly not anything from that soundtrack. The source has a nice eerie vibe though. I usually don't comment on mix titles, but "Song of Ruin" seems so out of place with this one. What little tension the original had to deserve its name, this has none of that. No points off for the name though, but perhaps this should have had a different name entirely. Sequenced guitar was pretty decent, with some good filling out of the background with the string runs; nice gradual build for the intro with some subtle personalized touches. Good subtle dynamic shift at :55 by punching up a few of the elements, and I liked the relatively smooth changeup in the percussion at 1:19 to keep things progressing. Wish that little phrasing at 1:37 & 2:01 wasn't basically used verbatim from the source; it's those little details that could easily be more substantially tweaked to make the arrangement stand apart more from the original. Cool shift to the electrosynth at 2:34 that worked better than I initially thought it would. At that point though, the snare rim hits (thanks, TO and zircon) that started at 1:19 felt like they had dragged out for too long. Would have loved a slightly different sound to eventually make its way in for a changeup at the foundation of the track. Perhaps just a minor crit in the big picture, but still an important one given how much it stood out to me. Relatively conservative but personalized approach. Though the sample quality was pretty nice, the performance could sound more organic though I can't put my finger on why that was. There was just something about it, but the execution was decidedly fine all things considered, and on par with Damon's skillz. The arrangement's quiet and understated enough that, IMO, it's not gonna reach out and grab you. But I appreciated the subtleties of the interpretation as well as the smooth shifts that allow the track to evolve without the casual listener even noticing. Pretty chill. YES
  7. Hi. Here's a new C64 remix of mine: I hope you will like it. Some informations: [===== Contact Info =====] - Remixer name = coucou - Real Name = Guillaume JANDOT - email = gjandot@freesurf.fr - WebSite = http://gjandot.free.fr - OCR forum userid = 6655 [===== ReMix Info =====] - Game Name = Rescue of Fractalus - Name of individual song = - - Remix Title: Spiritus Fractalus -Additional information about game: see http://www.electriceggplant.com/rescue.html -Link to the original soundtrack (C64 SID) : http://www.c64.org/HVSC/GAMES/M-R/Rescue_on_Fractalus.sid Thanks. -"COUCOU"- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.exotica.org.uk/tunes/archive/C64Music/GAMES/M-R/Rescue_on_Fractalus.sid - Subtune 2 Pretty repetitive SIDtune (30 seconds long), yet seemingly ripe for expansion. Intro initially seemed REALLY weak thanks to that bassline from :03-:06, but it picked up nicely once the melody got underway. Conservative usage of the source, but expanded nicely. Nice original section from :40 that very logically built off of the previous material while maintaining the general chord progression of the source in the background. 1:07 then combined the source melody with the original material. 1:33 went for yet another wholly original section up until 1:47 revisited the source melody with another electrosynth on counterpoint. 2:13's section featured another new section of original material over a background handling the chord progression of the original before rehashing 1:33's section from 2:40 until the end. Ending was pretty lackluster; nothing majorly bad on that level, but still a weak finish. Clearly not a bad mix. The synth design was lacking, a bit bland; it may bother the others more than it does me. In any case, the overall energy level was good. I really liked the original composition ideas that showed up in combination with the base elements of the source tune; those were exactly the kind of ideas needed to provide more substance when arranging such a brief source tune. My main gripe though was with the handling of the melody itself. The source theme was played 4 times during the track, and nothing particularly meaningful was done to vary up the presentation between iterations. Do something to vary up the melodic progression, change up the instrumentation and textures more dramatically; do what you can so that the feel isn't so similar each and every time. Even the minor sounds in here that beefed up the soundfield ultimately are too repetitive. To me, attention to those details is part of the difference between a decent rearrangement and a really strong rearrangement. This is a strong base, Guillaume, but IMO the track needs to be taken to that next level of creativity. If this doesn't make it, definitely consider the criticisms and go for a resubmission. Good luck with the rest of the vote. NO (refine/resubmit)

  9. I put this on the panel quickly. The panel judged this quickly. djp posted this quickly. After "Time Management", we owed it to you. Merry Christmas, Eliot!
  10. We can hold off on this for now. A new version will be on the way relatively soon. Exclamation pointz!
  11. Not to sound curt, but yeah, you'll be fine. Thread over.
  12. We'll look into it. Post the problem here though, please: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=90013
  13. Unreal Tournament OSV - "Foregone Destruction" Thanks for providing a copy of the original. Yeah, this follows the structure of the original pretty closely, changing some sounds, and adding in some very subtle embellishments. Not a good sign vs. the standards. 1:00 in and the thing was still in intro mode, the mix only being 4:06-long. 1:13 dropped out the countermelodic synth and brings in a bass kick to drive thing along before mushing up the soundscape with a very unmelodious and buried lead synth at 1:36. The sound balance there was pretty weak, as everything's pretty muddy and indistinct. The bass kicks and quiet percussion work from 2:00-2:24 were a lot less varied and interesting than the original. Other than that, there wasn't much going on with the track, making things drag. 3:12 added some new, though minimal, countermelodic ideas for the last section. You did try to make this a more ambient-type piece, but the end result sounds murky and imbalanced. Make the lead and countermelodic stuff stand out more. In any case, you used too many parts of the original near-verbatim, while making the supporting instrumentation much less complex. So overall, you ended up simplifying the track a lot, without really developing the arrangement into something different from the original. NO
  14. This one's been making the rounds around the Commodore arrangement community: http://www.remix64.com/tune_325300.html Interesting spread of opinions. I think there's a consensus that the sound choices are lacking and that the production should have been better. And though Giana Sisters is heavily arranged in the Commodore community, I disagreed with those who said the arrangement wasn't interpretive enough. I'm glad Makke and LMan, despite the criticisms given, felt that the arrangement was the best part of the track. While borderline, I felt the arrangement was the saving grace. No qualms on a rejection, but I wanted to reaffirm my borderline YES.
  15. I know DS felt this was a NO in #judges but couldn't articulate his views at the time. I don't like closing something (in effect, saying it's resolved) when I know for a fact that there's a differing opinion who hasn't voted. If a 5th YES shows up, I'll be glad to consider the decision closed, but I ask to hold off until Shariq has time to elaborate his opinion.
  16. Been very forgetful on contacting these bros, but I've taken care of it. Provided that a better encoding sounds good, I'll probably suggest DP or a priority vote to make up for the wait.

  18. http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ct - "Battle with Magus" (ct-2-24.spc) I was indeed bitching about the drums. No matter what song it is, you're basically using the same punchy drums. For some genres they click (better Metal Slug 2/Chaos Legion mixes), but most others they just don't work. At all. Could be a harp solo where you go "I need percussion too!", and you'll throw these drums in there. It didn't work for Chrono Cross "Dreaming By Your Side", and it's not working here. I wish I could suggest sounds that would work better for a mix like this, but try to solicit the opinions of some other top community members. The sequencing seemed rigid and flat with the melody at :23. The lead didn't sound very melodious or expressive at all, so right there the track's already in critical condition. As mentioned, the percussion didn't create a good texture with the other sounds, so you need to find something more complementary and get out of your comfort zone. The drums were definitely too loud, then at :47, you amped them up even more. The cymbals sound too sizzly and the various parts aren't distinguishable enough from one another within the soundfield, likely a result of the compression. The arrangement itself had potential, but ultimately felt repetitive. Key change at 1:29 was a letdown; aside from a few more embellishements and the key change, the writing basically repeated over and over again. Dynamically, you're twiddling your thumbs. You had a more effective dynamic contrast by changing up some of the instrumentation at 2:29, but even then most of the sounds from before stuck around so the feel wasn't changed enough. Changed up with some vox at 2:53 but the compression was over the top, leading to a very cluttered mess until 3:16, then back into the same-old, same-old arrangement ideas we heard for 3 other iterations once again at 3:16. As mentioned before, the variations from verse to verse here aren't strong; they sounded too similar to one another. 3:51 closed it out by going full circle with the instrumentation ideas of the intro, which was aight. I actually would have preferred a fadeout ending. I don't wanna discourage you from trying arrangements other than straight-up synth rock, Alex. But when you go outside that box, you need to changeup the instrumentation appropriately and create more cohesive textures. On the arrangement side, you need to develop and vary the Magus theme arrangement more so that it feels like it's going somewhere. For nearly the first 3 minutes you're essentially repeating yourself and it drags terribly. NO
  19. I figured I'd try submitting this mix again after tweaking the EQ and effects. Yeah it sounds a lot like the original, and it probably won't get uploaded to the site, but I figure I'd try submitting it anyway. Instead of just saying "No", how about leaving some real comments as to why, exactly, it doesn't deserve a spot on ocremix? That would help me make a better mix of it. Game: Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn, PC) Song: Panic Puppet Zone, Act-1 Remixer: JD Harding I didn't have the means to edit the ID tag, nor did I give the remix a snazzy new title. If anything, 'Puppet Trance' would probably be good enough.
  20. Back in the summer, I made this remix of Magus's Battle from Chrono Trigger. It was meant to be a guitar focused piece which delved into a few styles of guitar music, like you'll probably hear some punk, british rock or metal styles. Also there are the choral effects, I just think that's Magus's kinda sound. I wanted to just get stuck in with some fun arrangement, and whack some of my own ideas into the fray. When I finished the piece, the production took probably as long as it took to arrange the piece. Numerous attempts to get the sound I wanted just fell apart, perhaps trying too hard was giving too much. My last attempt at the production was to bring it all back and think of the sound that would compliment the arrangement the most. Sort of like my metal slug mix, where the guitars were sorta cheesy, with the cabinet and distortion effects. In this, they're much more poppy and I find this is how I would certainly enjoy it the most. Judge how you will, it is of course just an opinion. My only real incentive for submitting this mix is because my brother just won't shut up about it, and I'll get some peace . My initial response on this version was that you'd NO it, but I'm trying to keep an open mind now . Oh, thanks for passing my Chaos Legion mix! No ones covered it, so I feel I've done some justice now . Keep it realllzzezdsd
