OC ReMix StarCraft Tournament! Round 2 Begins! See Page 18

nekofrog: both you and your opponent have AIM, has he not been logged in? He's posted in the thread since the matchups were announced as much as you have so maybe you guys are just missing each other. Set yourselves up a time today and get it on! Gario: I TOTALLY dropped the ball, last night I was playing l4d with Elesarana and didn't say to set up a game with you. If I see her on steam before I go to work I'll tell her to check her messages here, and certainly will after work tonight. Native Jovian: If your opponent doesn't get in contact with you you'll advance since your opponent has not responded since the match-ups were announced. Sorry that you have to take a bye-week if that's the case, if you want a game I'll be up for one tonight -

well, i suppose if it was your replay you could give us some insight as to what was going on in your head... other than that i'd assume you'll just be cheering on the action and doing co-commentary! -

JadeAuto and I just played our matches! I won't announce who won just yet, I was curious if anyone would be interested in joining Nekofrog and Battousai for doing some skypecasting to the replays. Since there is a maximum of 24 replays possible, we'll only cast 1 from each set for the first round. Please respond to Battousai or Nekofrog ASAP to set this up. Also, how are you all doing in getting your matches set up? I had a few thoughts that we may have to extend the deadline by a few days if people are hard to contact or busy... From what I've seen though most of you are fairly active though, so I might just be a bit worried over nothing! Remember! You can email your replays to garian[at]thasauce[dot]net either as attachments or links to a download! -

haha, i was pretty frustrated because i was doing OK with the huntsman, but 3 other guys decided to go around getting killed as stationary scope/huntsman snipers, we had no classes that could do anything, just snipers and scouts basically so i went demo for a while, eventually we got a medic, but NO ONE would spy check so meatball was dominating half the team (incl. me)... what was REALLY frustrating was when i'd say 'that's a spy, don't heal him,' and the medic would get an assist against our own team anyway. The scores on their team were somewhat less abysmal, but at least their guys worked together mostly... it was still fun, even though i was kinda angry about it at the time -
thanks for posting that wes, i just checked a couple pages back and didn't see the link and wsa going to at least include this little gem: so! that's actually really exciting news. i'm still skeptical, but it seems that every day more news comes out from valve that really makes the game much more appealing.

OH CRAP, SORRY! I was too busy wanting to get into TF2, i've got some quarters right here, flipping now... Tau Cross for game 1 Python for game 2 Sin Chupung-Ryeong for game 3 The third map is the tiebreaker, of course. I COMPLETELY forgot last night, sorry about that! -

OK guys! Zyko and Linkspast never contacted me so they are being dropped. We also only had 15 people signed up so I will join in to even it out. Here are the matchups! * elesarana protoss (random value: 975) * Gario random (random value: 964) * wildarmor random (random value: 888) * wind_strike terran (random value: 880) * nekofrog zerg (random value: 874) * SynthesizedStampede protoss (random value: 855) * ProjectJusticeX terran (random value: 528) * nativejovian zerg (random value: 446) * tensei terran (random value: 355) * FriendlyWarlord random (random value: 332) * Battousai zerg (random value: 327) * bleck random (random value: 248) * jadeauto zerg (random value: 185) * garian random (random value: 168) * LordObsidious zerg (random value: 73) * vega12 protoss (random value: 23) Remember, the format is single elimination. I also seperated each group of 4 with seperate lists for clarity's sake; the winners of the first round in each group will play each other. Take as much time to warm up as you need, but once you start your matches please play until the best of 3! If you have any trouble contacting your opponent, please get in touch with me via IRC or Steam chat (I'll also check my messages, but that will be less frequent). BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR REPLAYS! Also make sure they are named in a similar format to "Gar Ro# Game#.rep" Good luck and have fun EDIT: I forgot the map list, sorry guys! Tau Cross for game 1 Python for game 2 Sin Chupung-Ryeong for game 3 -

Ok guys! I've got a tentative list of players, just working to confirm/deny a few people who showed interest but never formally declared their name/race (I can be flexible!). Confirmed: Nekofrog - Zerg Tensei-san - Terran Elesarana - Protoss FriendlyWarlord - Random LordObsidious - Zerg Wind_Strike - Terran Gario - Random JadeAuto - Zerg SynthesizedStampede - Protoss ProjectJusticeX - Terran Bleck - Random Vega12 - Protoss NativeJovian - Zerg Battousai - Zerg WildArmor - Random Unconfirmed: linkspast Zyko If we end up with an odd number of confirmed entrants, I'll throw my name on in as well just to even it out, playing Random with the name "garian." Remember, there's still plenty of time to practice, and you can take as much time to warm up as necessary... just be sure that once you start your matches that you save the replays. For the replay naming format, you should use an abbreviated form of your name (I would use Gar for myself), the level of the tournament (use some convention like "Ro 1" or "Set1"), and finally "Game" and the game number. When you send me your replays to me, they should appear similar to "Gar Ro1 Game1.rep" "Gar Ro1 Game2.rep" and "Gar Ro1 Game3.rep." It would be best to zip all three up with a text file stating the winner as well, but that is optional and mostly for my convenience-- I won't let Neko or Battousai know the results of any games that they cast if they choose to do so so that the commentary is fresh! -

Red Shadow, so far I've got 11 people who've formally signed up (9 in the thread, and 2 from real-time chat), and although I'm foreseeing Battousai and Nekofrog rolling through everyone it should be some good times. What exactly happened with the brawl tournament? ContinueTheEnd: Fair enough, I'm not sure how soon after we finish this tourney we'll start the next, but I'm hoping it's a bit more open to incorporate some other communities... Tumult and AE are pretty good for casual players, and they have a friend who played at a more hardcore level, micromanaging multiple fronts while maintaining his army size :S And here's a bit more info! The matchups will be random, I repurposed a silly win/loss ranking utility I made a few years ago (for the same reason) to assign a random number to entrants and then sort them from highest to lowest number (I was really having a hell of a time getting that to work, it was supposed to sort the other way, lowest to highest). Like I said before, once I post the match-ups, you'll have ONE WEEK to record 3 consecutive replays. I still need to work out a format for the replays to make it easier to manage :S Also, like I said before, if you cannot use Battle.net for ANY reason, you aren't necessarily disqualified... try to work out playing on a VPN like Hamachi with your opponent. Battle.net users DO get preference (meaning if your opponent is unable to use a VPN like Hamachi or a PVPGN server, you'll be forced to concede), but hopefully everyone will work to accommodate each other. Thanks again everyone, and there's still about 6 hours left to sign up so if you're even remotely interested, please do! -

ContinueTheEnd: Hm, I'd like to see what some other folks think, but from what I gather there is a lot of anticipation to see how folks stack up against one-another. I won't say that there is a definite "Not possible" until we get a bit more feedback, I'm not too inflexible! And if you have to sit this one out, there's always the next Also: I'm thinking, after our first "OCR Community" tourney, I'd like to host one that's a bit more open to some of the other communities I'm in and taking signups by email or something. What do you guys think? -

LordObsidious: There won't be any set "match times," instead I'll let the players submit their replays to me throughout the week of each bracket. Hopefully that should be enough to accommodate even the busiest folks, if not, once the brackets ARE posted PLEASE contact me and your opponent so we can work something out! friendlyHunter: I not sure on when the tournament will be over, that's depends on how many people enter! BUT we'll be beginning wednesday and when you get in contact with your opponent, play as much "warm-up" as you like, but you should play each map successively when you decide to get into it. It's a little lax but I get the impression that most guys here are casual players, I want everyone to have a good time and feel they played to their best ability. On wednesday I'll have the proper replay filename convention ready, I've gotta work out a couple of issues regarding how SC handles file names (it doesn't really give you enough characters). -

I was talking with Tensei on IRC a few minutes ago concerning maps, I settled on picking 6 different maps for now, and barring any major disagreements from anyone who will be playing, I'll flip coins on wednesday to see which 3 will be used for round 1. SO! Tentative maps! Destination download Sin Chupung-Ryeong download Tau Cross Neo Medusa download Othello Python Hopefully you guys can get some practice time in on all of the maps, like I said I have no idea which 3 we'll be using. If you have an issue with any of the maps, please let me know as soon as possible so we can discuss the issue, and if necessary find a suitable alternative. edit: noticed some maps didn't have download links at team liquid, tensei hooked me up with his archive of iccup versions of the maps. happy crafting :S -

heehee sensai. Allowing random is really just a concession, but if someone WANTS random, then they should have to stick with it for their matches, it'll make it a lot harder for the player to come up with a build order and plan than someone who is playing their primary race. I used to play against koelsch1 a lot and he had a nasty habit of speedlot rushing, and playing random against him meant it was a 1 in 3 chance of being able to counter his typical build easily (i was always slow to get lurkers, and i never made enough zealots, so firebats were how i coped). IMPORTANT: Signups will close sunday night at 12AM, and I'll get a randomly generated tournament bracket and map order on Wednesday. After that, you'll have one week to submit your replays (PLEASE Date and timestamp them). Since it will be a best-of-3, I expect 4 or 6 replays for each match-up, more if there are observers. For commentaries we'll just have to wait until after the replays are in, to prevent game-lag like Battousai said. Preferably the games will be played on Battle.net, but if for some reason you can't use Bnet then you can use Hamachi-- provided your opponent agrees. Maybe in the future we can set up a PVPGN server, or use one that someone else is hosting :S -

Thanks Tensei, yeah, I've been meaning to edit the OP but just haven't gotten around to it yet, no prize this time around it looks like, no big deal. Just some good games between friends and bragging rights~ JadeAuto: if you can do 1v1 on hamachi that's fine, just make sure to save the replays -

Lord Obsidious: Don't worry about interrupting any discussions, we talk about a lot of things in there. Also, there are alternatives to mIRC such as x-chat, pidgin, and trillian that don't cost money to use. JadeAuto: I'm not 100% certain but IIRC it could simply be the router's built in NAT (network address translating). Starcraft wasn't designed with broadband in mind, so there's a lot of times where it may not work without configuration of the router. The DMZ and no firewalls thing is really a dangerous option, and as you said it hasn't helped at all so you might want to get yourself protected again. My only real suggestion is to check for some NAT filtering option and try toggling that. We've had similar problems with some guys who have multiple clients running behind the same router and some guys who can't connect to multiple clients in a game but can 1v1 just fine... it always turns out to be bad NAT redirection :S -

Nekofrog pretty much hit it on the nail, he and Battousai are pretty knowledgeable about the game and would be perfect for commentating. I was figuring we could either use Observer versions of the maps and have live commentating recorded from a skype session, or we could take the replays and have commentating done "after the fact." Wild Armor: you should come on IRC in the late-night/early morning tonight (2AM Pacific) and watch the Averatec-Intel Classic with us and see just how insane it really is with english commentary as well! Also, just in case anyone's wondering: One of the reasons I want to wait until mid-June is to give some of the less experienced players some time with the maps and to get some practice time. There are pretty good chances that people will be matched with someone who's been playing for a while and knows plenty of tricks and builds, I'd hate for someone to get utterly stomped without at least half-expecting it from some of the competition. Also if anyone wants to get some practicing in, hop on the IRC channel and speak up, sometimes someone will be around who'll be willing. jadeauto: welcome aboard! what kind of lag problem? Apparently a lot of routers do some sort of NAT filtering which royally fucks up starcraft (and starcraft alone it seems). hope you get it fixed! :S -

haha, well, if you're not sure what race you're going to get until you actually get into the game you're probably going to have to come up with your build order on the fly! that's the way I usually played when it was just playing around with a bunch of guys. I'm not sure if I'm going to join in or not yet, I might just watch this time around :S tensei: holy crap. double proxy barracks. and then that dragoon WOULD. NOT. DIE. that terran had no chance against the upgraded dragoon range. in pro-league it always comes down to like one or two units and a crucial upgrade, thanks for posting. -

Yay for not reading the "please post your race and the name you'll be playing under," but I haven't started compiling a list of players yet. Like I said in the updated OP I'm aiming for a mid-to-late June for the first tourney, which will be the 1v1. From the looks of things, I'll just track down a little programming project from my one year of college and build a bit of a tournament manager from that. Or at least use the C++ STL's random number generation system to create the initial brackets and track it by hand. As far as the maps go, I'm thinking we'll go with some typical pro-league maps. Nekofrog, Tensei, and Battousai have all been faithfully watching the Averatec-Intel Classic on GOMtv and could probably make some suggestions for each of the rounds. The maps I've already mentioned (Hannibal, Andromeda, and Python) can be obtained from teamliquid.net. Some of the other maps from that list that I've played on are Longinus, Baekmagoji, Katrina SE, and Hwarangdo, and they're mostly pretty great maps and are designed for the balanced nature of professional/competetive SC gameplay. --Ah, it seems that friendlyHunter posted while i was writing this. With regard to choosing random: if that's what you want to play, that's fine by me! We'll still track what race you played in the replays and in the wins/losses. Also if you're thinking you're really a newbie, you should hop on #ocremix irc and chat with nekofrog and battousai, they are very good players and could give you a lot of pointers and might be willing to play with you. Also you should catch some VODs (videos on demand) to see some techniques that the pros use, a lot of them are actually quite easy to pick up and use even in casual play. Another thing you might want to try is learning all of the hotkeys, and press F1 some time during play for the in-game help menu. It has a LOT of useful tips that you might not know about! -

Great guys, there's definitely enough interest. Does anyone have any experience actually managing a tournament, or know of any decent utilities for doing so? I could probably whip something up very quick/dirty in c++ but I haven't practiced any of that stuff since 2007 :V Also no one has really said anything about prizes! I'm actually kinda surprised, but it's nice to know that you guys are more interested in the game. So I guess we'll see on that for now. edit: I was going to say this in the update but this post iwll probably get more reads... There has been some mention of lost CD keys-- Should we set up our own PVPGN server for playing the tournament? -

the video is a guy completely missing shots with the ambassador on a bunch of stationary bots. so apparently the gun shoots REAL CANNONBALLS in order to hit people that are a foot or two to the side... no wonder they said that all you had to do was put wheels on it and it'd be a cannon. -

There will be no money maps, I was hoping that that would be clear. Maps I am thinking of would be like Hannibal (the ubuntu map) and Andromeda (one of the maps used in the Averatec/Intel Classic on GomTv). I haven't been watching the Classic season 3 so I don't know all of the maps they've used this time around, but generally the maps that are designed for pro-league starcraft tend to be the most balanced. One of the largest hurdles in balancing maps has been the lack of upwards facing slopes from higher/lower ground, though some of the mapmaking utilities have been able to manage custom doodads that work around the issue. Of course, some maps do favor one race over the others but that's inevitable due to the nature of the SC metagame. -

We'll probably play on some of the maps that they use in some of the professional leagues, they're quite common ground for folks who follow the game and are a lot more fairly balanced than many of the original Blizzard maps. Does anyone know what maps the GOMTV Averatec/Intel classic is using this season? As far as the matchups go, yeah, best of 3 for sure. Random matchups are probably going to be the most fair way to go, because I'm certain that the skill levels are pretty broad. Also judging from the number of folks that do enjoy the game, it'd be pretty time consuming to do a whole round robin with 2-3 matches each. Thanks for the feedback so far!
