OCR00126 - Super Mario Bros. "Dancehall Ragga"
mDuo13 replied to Jivemaster's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix is a bit disappointing compared to other Mario Bros mixes because it's so similar to the original, even in terms of instruments (the main melody sounds almost as if it was ripped from the NES). It's not bad, though. There's some nice percussion and background that sounds pretty good, but should've been given a bit more attention. -
OCR00438 - Street Fighter II "Freestyle Dojo"
mDuo13 replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This has to be one of the more unique ReMixes on the site in terms of instrument choice. All kinds of peculiar asian- or electronic-sounding instruments. It all blends very well. McVaffe also makes use of a shmorgasborg of samples from SF2 (dig that crazy sample grooving at 2:01). Not McVaffe's absolute best, but very close to it, and more than good enough to fit on your playlist. Get it. -
OCR00045 - Secret of Monkey Island "AmIEviL"
mDuo13 replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a very cool ReMix. I've not played the original, but it just makes me feel like I'm on a pirate ship with the choice of instruments (acoustic guitar, a very pirate-like flute of some sort, etc etc). Definitely worth however long it takes to download; AmIEvil never disappoints. I must say, though, it's a hard piece to describe. Get it. -
OCR00050 - Space Harrier II "GET READY"
mDuo13 replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a pretty good tune. A very electronic set of instruments, with a good amount of modulation, and perfect timing on the voice samples. The melody is not stick-in-your-head catchy (like DJP's similar Actraiser 'Lord PROTEKTOR' ReMix is) but it's still pretty good. Good arrangement also present, this piece comes with everything except the kitchen sink (even a groovin' drum solo at 3:10) -
OCR00781 - Mega Man 5 "Good Night, Lil' Man"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely a great follow-up to texx sound's spectacular first piece. Emotion very high, and in a very good way. Get it. It starts out with a soothing piano melody, which is backed up by a subtle violin, then a string section patch and an extremely well-played acoustic guitar. A recorder, I believe, joins in as well. This one never gets too loud and leaves you wanting it to go on much, much longer. -
OCR00273 - Chrono Trigger "Schala's Paradise"
mDuo13 replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Ehhh... a little too repetetive. Prominent percussion and electronic melody that just repeats over and over and over again... Prince Vejita would take a lesson to listen carefully to the way JD Harding manages to mix his trance up a bit, so that, while still trance, doesn't get boring. Or he could learn from McV, SP, DJP the art of solos. This isn't an entirely bad remix, but I don't particularly like it. -
OCR00405 - Super Mario 64 "Sunken Suite"
mDuo13 replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
....WOW. Beatiful. Just beatiful. I don't usually review songs that have more than 3 or so, but for this one, I have to make an exception. At first you may have a tough time figuring out what song it is, but in a little bit, you'll figure it out and sit in awe. True, at the end, the percussion is a bit loud, but it's still amazing. -
I like this one quite a bit. I know virtually nothing about FruityLoops, but I think this one is a great one to download and listen to over and over. The original was so good that it would've been hard to screw it up, and no mistake of that proportion made here. A nice solo at 1:22, and a very good one overall. I love this remix and can't stop listening to it!

OCR00055 - Super Mario Bros. "Jazz Plumber Trio"
mDuo13 replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow. I'm not really into jazz, but when it's done right, like this one, it's INCREDIBLE. Very real-sounding... It seems to fill the room with piano and flute that expand quite a bit (and never badly) on the Mario Bros theme. You might not like it, but I can't help but love it. -
OCR00388 - Chrono Trigger "Time Circuits High Voltage"
mDuo13 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wonderful. Absolutely exceptional. Despite a kingdom of Queen Zeal mixes, this one stands out. A fade-in-and-out electronic effect starts the melody, followed promptly by wind and choir patches. The main melody is played by something somewhere between a pure electronic sound and a recorder for a while, then it innovatively alternates to yet another electronic effect that has a faint semblance of some sort of recognizable instrument (this one a little more string-like). Reminds me a lot of JD Harding's (or should I say Kendri's?) remixes. -
OCR00214 - Lunar: The Silver Star "Singing Pretzel"
mDuo13 replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a VERY nice ReMix. The electronic (instrumental) aspects are all superb. The vocals are surprisingly professional and are actually astoundingly good! The drum loop is very satisfying, with a very exciting (if predictable) beat. The modulation is above average, even for DJP. The only criticism I can make is that DJP needs to enunciate more. Then again, I suppose I'm the pot calling the kettle black, but we can all learn from some constructive criticism. -
OCR00490 - Mega Man 2 "Hot Flashes Man"
mDuo13 replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
YOWZA! I would DEFINITELY put this on the list of DJP's top tunes! It even surpasses AE's similar (and VERY formiddable) remix of the same tune. Even so, get both. DO NOT PASS THIS ONE UP!!!!! I REPEAT, DO NOT! -
OCR00645 - Lufia II "Time Preserved ~ April Showers"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This song is nice and mellow, with some good rainfall effects, a soothing piano, acoustic guitar, and an almost-not-there percussion that's more reminiscent of mp's darker tracks. Not fast or furious, but relaxing, and I love the chord he ends it on... -
OCR00644 - Lufia II "Of Sinistrals and Men"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
AWESOME!!!!! Orchestral techno at its best! The percussion reminds me of CotMM with its static effects, and the harp and strings are awesome. Gotta love the interludes with the electric guitar (?), too. Best of Matt Pollard's mixes, not too short, but certainly not boring. GET IT GET IT GET IT!!!!! -
OCR00650 - Xenogears "Transient Sands ~ Dazil"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Awesome mix! I love the way it has a rockin' sitar, It's like an electric on a killer amp, but it's a SITAR! Cool ethnic percussion, and really cool whispering. One of my favorite mp tunes, and he has some cool ones (also check out Lufia II - Of Sinistrals and Men). Very, very cool mix of ethnic & rock sounds. YEHAW! -
This song thuds along with all kinds of house-style modulation and playing with the melody. Solid beat, intesting samles (esp the ending), and an interesting version of the tetris theme. I find it quite annoying that every time I try to play the tetris theme on piano I start playing this one's version of the iterations. =) Nice one!

OCR00504 - Mega Man 2 "Crash Test Dummy Man"
mDuo13 replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This one's got a bit of a slower tempo than some of AE's other songs, but it does not disappoint in any way shape or form. Electronic, modulated, nonstop originality. I can't believe how little attention AE seems to get in the reviews department for a ReMixer of his calibur... -
OCR00588 - Secret of Mana "Dirge for the Frosty Plains"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A melancholy tune with a few types of strings. Almost makes me want to cry. I really like this one, but it just has this tendency of slipping from my memory. Probably because the sound is so minimalist, but it works very well. The quiet howling wolf sounds are barely audible, but they're a nice addition. I think you should get this one and play it when you're deep in thought. I've added it to MY playlist and will probably listen to it over and over again. Can't say I like the way the song just kind of disappears out from under you like a trap door, as it leaves me wondering, "Huh? It's over? When did that happen?" A very nice one, mp. Bring us some more, eh? -
I must say, the acoustic part is very cool. We need to have a full-on acoustic guitar mix of a megaman song. The electric guitar and electric piano that make up the main part of the song are pretty good. The shortness works in this one's favor because it leaves you wanting more and playing it again. Still, I want more of that acoustic!

OCR00387 - Super Castlevania IV "Castle Trance"
mDuo13 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Apparently my sense of taste is not in full coherence with Rob Saunders', because I happen to think that this is one of McVaffe's best. A nice trance melody with lots of good transitions. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this song. It's a VERY awesome mix, and you should get it and cherish it and loop it over and over and over and... well, you get the idea. DOWNLOAD NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
OCR00384 - Obliterator "Gun and Bass"
mDuo13 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a neat mix, with a mix of creepiness and grooviness. I don't have a clue what the instruments are, but they sound good, and the interesting chirp along with the beat is kinda cool. Nothing too outstanding, but nothing bad about this mix. -
OCR00582 - Final Fantasy VI "Morning After (Hangover)"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very, very good stuff from everybody's favorite webmaster/remixer. No lack of energy or originality, and a nice increased tempo. Sweet electronic strings and very, very grooving flute (of some sort). I actually like the ending, as well. You've probably downloaded it already, but for those of you who haven't, do it. I've looped this one many, many times. One of djp's best tracks. -
OCR00576 - Guardian Legend "Liquid Corridor (Clean Mix)"
mDuo13 replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like this mix, but it's nothing exceptional or extraordinary. Just a nice, solid, clean mix. Good techno beat with a piano that joins in later, and a nice melody. No sections stand out too much, but I like the way that instruments seem to disappear near the end, especially because you don't even notice at first, except that the mix suddenly seemed a little emptier than before. It seems to go by really fast for a two-minute mix; I would have thought it was just a minute or one and a half if I hadn't looked at my Winamp window. ========================= NOTE: Some of you may have noticed: I have recently been trying to review all songs that do not have more than 1 reply to the original review. There are a few newer songs with tons of replies, and more than 4 pages of songs with just the initial review! You guys should help out and say whatcha got to say about all those remixes back there that are nearly forgotten. -
Well well well... Interesting version of the tune used in the Fairy Fountains in both Zelda 64s. It's got a slow tempo and a nice mix of instruments, from harps and orchestral strings to pianos and flutes. Nice tweaks to the melody keep it from getting boring, and it's a soft, jazzy, and relaxing tune. I like it!

Very prominent drum beat, and good backing to it, but somehow it doesn't have that something special that makes me want to listen to a song over and over again. It DOES have some interesting instruments, and the more they pick up, the stronger the percussion becomes. Interesting, but not a hallmark of arrangement skills.
