  1. Remix title: Koopa Nova Remixer name: diotrans Real name: Amy Hsieh Website: www.amyhsieh.com UserID: 21446 Game: Super Mario Kart, Super Mario 64 Platform: SNES, N64 Song: Koopa Beach, Starman/Invincibility theme Composer: Koji Konda, Soyo Oka, Taro Bando Super Mario Kart was one of those games I played the crap out of as a kid, so this soundtrack is very nostalgic for me. I don't remember exactly how the idea for this remix came about. I just know that I've had in my head a bossa nova-style starman theme for a long time, and a bossa nova-style Koopa Beach for an even longer time. I guess I finally put it together and combined the two ideas. I'm playing flute, acoustic guitar, and keys in this one. This is a totally new and different style for me, so I didn't really have a clear image of what the song would be like when I started it. There was a lot of exploring and learning new things, and the remix took me a long time to finish. But I had a ton of fun with it. I also want to mention that I was partly inspired by the Austin Powers soundtrack (which is surprisingly good, probably my favorite movie soundtrack). Shout out to my OCR buddies Arcana, sixto, and others who encouraged me and gave suggestions, and especially Palpable who heard the WIP in various stages as it evolved and gave helpful advice along the way. --------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZt0hYAO8ow - Koopa Beach - Star Theme
  2. I didn't really want to vote on this until we had a definitive answer on all the source usage. After spending a couple hours looking at it though, the list above was the best I could get, so I guess I'm going to have to go with that. For the amount of sources used, this flows pretty well. I found that the OWA usage (especially as the ending) was the only thing that seemed a little out of place, but even then it's still pretty good. Transitions are done very well, and the way the sources are used doesn't just strike me as a medley. Production is solid pretty much throughout, so there are no complaints there. YES

It's been a while. I don't really remember exactly how this mix got started anymore. It was a track on the Aborted Animal Crossing project and I somehow managed to turn the insane Sports Fair - Ball Toss song into something much more laid back. Hope you like it! 4. Remix name: Lingering Lust Genre: Acoustic / Folk Remixer name: Brandon Strader Real name: Brandon E. Strader Email: oinkness@gmail.com Website: http://brandon.rainwound.com/ User ID: 3123 Game name: Teen Agent Source: Lovers Soundtrack: http://www.instaidgrace.com/brandon/teenagent.zip Sorry it's not on the internet so here's the soundtrack (200kb) Composer / game is on site I had made a song called With Love for the Teen Agent album which was judged as too liberal. My response to this was a recreation of the Lovers remix, which I have called Lingering Lust. I used minimal orchestra elements to add depth and also to more smoothly follow Vampire Hunter Dan's brilliant song that precedes this one. I wasn't planning for percussion but ultimately chose to put some sparse EWQL RA ethnic percussion along with live tambourine that I recorded here. The orchestra is QLSO. I really love that Oboe sound. There's no bass guitar which I tried to write as cello instead. The acoustic guitars follow the source pretty well, though obviously the chorus interprets the source in a way that is appropriate for acoustic guitar. There's a little solo section right before the end which was a bit of a liberty, but I felt it was needed as a "release" before the ending of the song. Recorded into Cubase 5 with a MXL 991 microphone and a monster cable! -------------- Lovers (.mod)
  5. Hey OCRemix, My last submission was pretty shoddy, but I think this one will do. User Name: No Escape Name: Chris Michalski Email: noescape16@yahoo.com User ID: 32645 Songs remixed: Desires and Commandments (From Atelier Iris 3), Crash! (From Atelier Iris 3), Loki (From Ar Tonelico Melody of Elemia) I have attached my song to this e-mail. It's a pretty straightforward driving rock song. I got inspired after listening to Unholy Wars by Sixto. Although its nothing spectacular, I think I got a pretty good mix. To be honest, it's the best I can do. I used a Korg N1 for all my synth sounds, a PRS with a really strange pedal set-up for guitars, an Alesis D4 electonic set for my drums, and another strange combo of Fruity Loops and Cool Edit Pro for my recording and mixing. Atelier Iris was composed by Ken Nakagawa while Ar Tonelico had a multitude of composers, but I believe Loki was done by Daisuke Achiwa. The links to the songs are below. 6. J-linkz halc (13226) Drew Wheeler halcyonmix@gmail.com 'Oversaturated' http://halc9bit.com/remixes/Kaleidoscope%20-%20Oversaturated.mp3 Kaleidoscope Sources: Old Oddities, Variations on Navigation Comments: I'm obviously a big fan of Mattias's work, and the Kaleidoscope soundtrack is no exception. To be honest, this one gave me a bit of trouble. The end product is pretty simple and straightforward; I don't really think it lives up to the original tunes, but it was fun re-imagining the songs in a different sort of bell-sy chiptune style. Hope you enjoy! <3 ---------------------------- Old Oddities Variations on Navigation Typical Halc mi- Oh, fine. I'll vote for real. Halc combines the two sources pretty seamlessly, and as usual adds his trademark flavor. The chips and synths are used well, adding a sort of ecclectic feel to the overall. The mumbling in the background is a little strange, but it works for the mix. The one drawback is that the low end feels a bit lacking. The bass doesn't hold much weight compared to the higher end stuff. This makes the mix feel a little more upbeat and almost childish, which works in it's own way, but it would have been nice to hear some low stuff, too. YES
  7. Remixer name : Exetra Real Name : Jérôme Bulant Email address : Astabolhk_hmx@hotmail.fr Website : http://www.myspace.com/hmxrebirth UserID : 36167 Name of the game : Mega Man 7 (SNES) Name of the individual song : Shade Man theme Additional Information : http://ocremix.org/game/460/mega-man-7-snes I think your website contains everything about it, but if you need to know something, tell me I'll do my best to answer Link to the Original Soundtrack : Sorry, I found the lead with my guitar when I was hearing it Own Comments about the mix : In first, I'll apologize for my English. I'm not sure to speak correctly, because I'm French.. Brief ! I really like Mega Man classic's music, it was a lot of memories when I heard them. I was inspirate by my own music style, something a little bit sad and disturbed. I like to do music as "Calm/Aggressif/Calm" it's how if we was reading a story, in first there's the calm (intro), after there's the disruptive, then there's the fight, and finally, there's the denouement. But I hate good ends (lol). I done it with GuitarPro5 / MixCraft / my Guitar / my MIDI Pad. I'm beggining in the mastering domain, so I hope it has a good render. Hoping that you'll enjoy it, have a nice day/week/month (Xmas, easter, etc... ) -------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsgbnG7ZJ4g There are some pretty decent arrangement ideas going on here. I liked that you slowed things down and gave the entire track a more introspective feel. Similarly, the transitions to the different sections are not bad. The first transition to the strings only and the transition to half-time were a little rough, but serviceable. What's really hurting this mix is the execution. There are a lot of timing issues between the instruments which makes the whole mix feel awkward and rough. The panning is also not used as effectively as it could be. Place your main instruments more center, and have other instruments more panned. Balancing out the drums vs. the other instruments will also help things. Right now they feel a little too far back. Some of the samples are kind of weak, the strings most notably. I would look into finding some better samples for those. I like the overall arrangement ideas, but the other aspects need a good amount of work. Really focus on getting things more in time, work out those details. NO (resubmit)
  8. If I remember, there's another glitch in Secret of Evermore where the game won't continue, even if you have the items you need. You could sometimes bypass it by talking to someone repeatedly, or something like that. Anyone have that happen or know the details further?
  9. This one's for DarkeSword. I want GACKT!
  10. ...... Uusally I get Jodie Foster, so...I don't know which is better. *shrug*
  11. Oh, and another. Tactics Ogre for Playstation would not load saves. I was pretty disappointed that I had to give up on that one. I even tried it on my cousin's PS to no avail.
  12. My cart of Lufia II used to erase anywhere from 1 to 3 of the save slots, meaning my brother got preference (his system) to save in all four slots. I didn't finally get to play the game until years later on an emulator (easier for the 100-level dungeon anyways). The FFVII disk 2 I had was scratched, and would freeze during the cut scene right after the battle with Diamond WEAPON. I had to beat the thing like 10 times and finally through some miracle the game loaded past that spot.
  13. "Rhymes with Elixir" will always hold a place in my heart. Even though I had to have it explained to me.
  14. Make sure you check the dates that we are up to in the inbox in the "Currently in Judging Process" thread. Since we just got to June, we may not have run into your submissions at all yet. Double check with when you submitted your first remix.
  15. Remixer name: Guifrog Real name: Guilherme Arcoverde Country: Brazil ---- Game arranged: Quackshot (Genesis, 1991) Song arranged: Hideout (Source link: )Remix name: Tangolomango Ribbit! I was pretty concerned on the fact that my last VGM Remix, The Dreamseeker, had very obscure source music. While I'm writing this e-mail, I still haven't got a response on it, but this time I've just finished working on a better known source - that one game starred by Donald Duck -, despite its old nature. You might rarely see me remixing songs from the newest games (I'm not used to playing games in general as I was in the past). Tangolomango, as I know in Brazil, is an expression that translates into something like "mess", "party", "randomness" or similars. I named it like this because the song's actually inspired on the argentine tango =P. You may expect traditional instruments like violins, bandoneon, piano and bass; but I've added stuff like percussion and an acoustic guitar, just to give it more flavor. There's no electronica elements this time, as I wanted it to sound simple and natural, but varied and emotional. Oh, I've had a few problems with volume in this one: if I turned it upper a certain value, there'd appear an odd extra noise; I also couldn't turn it down too much because I need it to be sufficiently proportional to other songs' volumes. Anyway, let's cut it out and go ahead for breakdown. Side note: The main base (or harmony) of the ReMix, led by the piano, consists of an interpretation of the source's second (or, third? If I consider the bass...) melody line. I'm not an expert on music technical words, but you might understand when you make the comparisons. 0:00-0:14 -> Main source melody. 0:16-0:28 -> Same, but includes variations. 0:31-0:46 -> Break, original writing. 0:47-1:00 -> I call it the chorus. Piano plays the part of the source I've described on the side note thingy, while the rest just adds something to it. 1:01-1:08 -> Clarinet soloing, original writing. 1:09-1:15 -> Guitar plays the source, while... 1:16-1:22 -> ...violins add original stuff. 1:23-1:30 -> Again the lil' break, with bandoneon almost direct-playing source's second (...or...third?) melody line. 1:31-1:37 -> Something. Tangolomango, I dunno. 1:38-1:44 -> Percussion comes in and guitar comes again, while... 1:45-1:51 -> ...violins blah bleh blih bloh bluh. 1:53-2:07 -> Chorus. 2:08-2:22 -> Clarinet takes a longer space for the soloing. 2:23-2:30 -> Guitar, while... 2:31-2:37 -> Violins... no, wait. Just one violin, playing part of the source. 2:38-2:50 -> Bandoneon almost direct-plays source's second (y'know what I mean!!) melody line. 2:51-2:54 -> Piano tangolomangoes, the rest comes along and the song finishes. That's it, enjoy! P.S.: Thanks to Nutritious and the other guys who helped me improve this piece on the Workshop forums! It took a bit long to receive the crits, but I think it turned out good enough. ---------------------- As always, the breakdown really helps things. Overall I really like what you've done to the source; it was a very creative expansion on the original into a pretty cool style. I'm noticing a few things that could be a little better, but they aren't such drawbacks to really pull it down for me. For one, things get a little repetitive after a while. The piano playing the tango style goes on for a little too long in a few points, and I would have liked more breaks from it here and there. There is also one section where the piano is soloing that a few notes felt out of place. Generally, though, arrangement is your strong point in this mix (and your others). Some of the samples aren't the greatest, which tends to be your weakspot, but I think you used them pretty effectively here. The guitar is probably the instrument that shows the most. The percussion (tambourine especially) shows through a little bit as well. I'm not too affected by them, however, because they do blend well into the mix. The clarinet and strings do sound pretty good, though, and since they are more forefront in the mix it works out well. Fun mix, and I'm glad you picked a more obscure source! YES

Here is the mix from the MOVIN’s theme of ff8: Chase Into The Space. I work on this project in collaboration with Ilp0. For this music, I wanted something epic, powerful, and the metal symphonic style was particularly adapted. For the structure, this mix use the three parts of MOVIN’s theme: intro (with the famous arpeggios!), melodic lines ‘A’ and ‘B’. After an introduction and a presentation of the theme, I’ve added for the melody ‘A’ some variations (between 2’00 and 3’30): sad melody, metal part ultra speed (with a repetition of arpeggios, and a very small extract of the ff9 battle theme #2 by the bass line (maybe a bit difficult to recognize)), and an interlude very soft. After this, the melody ‘B’ put in place with a rhythm heavy; and ultra speed at the end. The last part makes a link between this melody and the final of World crisis from ff7, which well blend in, IMO. The mix finishes in culmination, with the last accords of the World Crisis, accompanied by a nice guitar impro. Ilp0 recorded for me all the guitar parts. He played also some nice improvisations which give more depth to this mix. Notably at between 2’00 and 3’00, or in the last part, he added a lot of emotion and power on this music. What else? Software that I used for this project was Final for the orchestra part FL Studio for bass and drum, and on other for mixing. I put all my heart on this mix! I hope you’ll enjoy!!! Musically it's inspired by daft punk and Kraftwerk, i.e. it's got the robot voice, a vocoder and a humaniser. ----------------------- - The Stage is Set - Force Your WayDaft Punk/Kraftwerk is definitely a strong influence here. The way the source is incorporated here is very clever, and I found that the more I listened to this the more I appreciated it. I thought things got just a little repetitive, but it might be more indicitive of the style than anything else. I'm curious about what the voice is saying. It almost sounds like it's reciting Pi at one point. Really fun to listen to. YES
  18. ReMixer name: MetalvaniaX Website: http://metalvaniax.blogspot.com Userid: 35926 Remix Title: A Belmont's Curse Name of game arranged: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Name of individual song arranged: Dwelling of Doom Original soundtrack: Comments: Metal remix of "Dwelling of Doom" (as you could probably guess from the name!). I added my own harmonies, changed some of the riffs a bit, and added some acoustic parts as well. The song is constructed with a beginning, middle and end; it starts fairly close to the original tune, then has an acoustic interlude with a tempo change, before coming back again with an altered riff & solo carrying through from the acoustic section. The song was written and recorded from September '09 to February '10. I spent a few months on-and-off mastering and tweaking, with the final edit done on the 6th of June 2010. Yeah, I'm not the fastest worker... but this was my first time really getting to grips with the software, and the whole "mastering" process. I ended up re-recording the song three times, starting from almost scratch twice cause I wasn't happy with where it was going. I think I'm finally ready to accept it as finished! If there are any problems with getting the files etc. just let me know! Thanks! Andrew ---------------------- I want to start out by saying I'm not sure if the album name "8-Bit Metal Suppository" is painful or awesome. Either way, it caught my attention. The style works pretty well for the source, and I think it's treated nicely. The part that is getting to be is how repetitive this is overall, mostly due to the source itself. I think that maybe condensing some of the ideas overall could achieve the same effect as stretching it out did. The counter-melody in the acoustic section transitioning back into the melody worked out great, and the solo fit very nicely in the track overall. Production is overall pretty good to my ears. Drums were treated nicely, and the patterns work well with the melodies. There was a little crowding between the counter-melody and melody in the acoustic section, but nothing that really detracted from the overall. To me, the repetition is what is really holding this back. I think it is passable as is, though, and hope to hear more from you! YES
  19. From what I've heard, you only can access 30 floors until you beat the game, or somehting like that.
  20. The image needs to be updated. One of my collabs is finished, the other is like 90%.
  21. Change it to Pumpkin-decorating and I'm in.
  22. Pretty easy decision here. Fishy pretty much has it covered. Love pretty much everything going on; beats, soundscape, and sounds all are chosen with care. I don't know if it was intentional, but the beginning piano section felt just a little blocky at times, sticking with chords a lot. As the song opens up, it's fine though. The one very small thing I noticed for production is that the background encroaches on the piano in a couple of sections. Super minor, though. YES
  23. Well, hopefully after you put your brain back together you can give us a little more info on the game. I've been interested to see how this would come out.
