ReMixer Name: AlanGee15 Name: Alan Garcia Website: http://www.youtube.com/alangee15 UserID: 49349 Game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Arrangement name: Sheik's Groove Song name: Sheik's Theme Composer(s): Koji Kondo Comments: Back in Winter of '98, my mom took me to Target to go "shopping". Little did I know she was actually taking me to snag my first Zelda experience on the Nintendo 64 (along with a really shiny strategy guide!). Every minute of music in this game is truly remarkable and I loved singing to every tune. I recently went through some of my favorite tracks with my little sister and noticed a short track titled "Sheik's Theme". I couldn't recall ever paying any mind to the 36 second piece when I played the game. The original piece consists of a very simple yet beautiful melody all played on harp. What truly makes this piece stand out is the dense, chromatic, walking harmonies going on right in the middle of the root and melody. I knew immediately that I would be using the electric piano (a.k.a. Rhodes) for this remix to keep the fatness of the chords. Alongside the rhodes would be the traditional harp that Sheik plays along with a flute that takes the melody at the end of the piece. The original piece doesn't necessarily have a solid time signature so I felt a hip-hop groove would help solidify and give structure to the chords. There also a couple of extra bits of Kondo's goodness in the piece that I hope you all will enjoy Thank you so much for your time and consideration! I hope you enjoy this remix as much as I enjoyed making it. ------------------------
  2. Game: Final Fantasy II Name of arrangement: Culminating Domination Song: Battle Scene 2 (NES version) Original Composer: Nobuo Uematsu Remixer: Knight of the Round Real name: Justin Taylor, Justin Wilbanks, Kevin Baumann, Jeremy Scheisser User ID: 43205 Link to Original: Link to submission: ATTACHED Genre: Poly-rhythmic Groove Thrash When I last submitted a track to OCR, KOTR was my solo project. It’s since grown into an active band that plays shows and conventions (such as MAGFest). Having 3 others to help with the writing process has helped further shape our sound (as well as make it a hell of a lot easier to write.) This remix ended up being a little more on the groovy/slower side as opposed to some the thrashier stuff I’ve done in the past. Guitars were once again recorded with an Agile 8 string, tuned to drop E flat. This time around, we used 100% digital amplification. I used my Line6 POD HD Pro to record all guitar parts, then re-amped the signal through Line6 PodFarm. Bass was recorded DI with a SansAmp Bass Driver. Drums were programmed with Superior Drummer 2.0, then the kick and snare were sound replaced with Steven Slate drums. Enjoy!
  3. Nice pick of sources. Your arrangement does a good job of keeping the feel of the original and adding a little bit more of a menacing feel to it. The arrangement overall is a bit repetitive; there's a lot of that Harley Quinn riff throughout the mix. I think adding a bit more variation onto that would be a good idea to keep things a bit more interesting due to how much it is used. The change-ups are pretty good overall, although I felt the second voice clip transition was a bit weak. The transition into the ending was not working for me at all. There was no build up or down to it, and it ended up just...happening. The production has a lot of good merits to it. The sounds are integrated well together, and the balance is pretty good. I wasn't entirely sold on the strength of the synths themselves, but I think they are alright overall. I can see that definitely being a bigger issue with other judges, so I am curious what they think. The drums are way repetitive which, along with the background elements being somewhat repetitive makes me wish there was a bit more going on. Nice use of panning! That section is definitely a highlight. I think this is pretty close in the end. I'm thinking I am just shy of a YES here mostly due to the repetition and cleaning up the ending. Just a bit of spit polish. NO (resubmit)

  6. I'm agreeing with Vinnie here: the source is really hard to make out a lot of the time. It doesn't help that a lot of the source is pretty ambient, but even the parts you mentioned that I specifically listened to were hard to match up. I think you did an awesome job otherwise, and considering what you were working with this sounds pretty good and is quite fun to listen to, but it's just not connected enough. NO (resubmit?)

  9. I think there are some more issues than just the melody being run aground, although the repetition is definitely the main factor here. The phasing on the melody feels a bit out of time with the percussion at times, and overall I felt like the soundscape was missing an element, although I can't place exactly where (maybe it could use more mids and the bass could use a bit more in the low end?). The drums could have had a bit more oomph to them; a little harder crack on the snare and the bass would give them a little more presence. The lack of variation is definitely the main issue, but I think there are some production aspects that need to be looked at as well. NO

We landed on a song from one of our favorite games, Little Nemo: The Dream Master on the NES. We initially tried a tribal theme because we thought it would be hilarious direction but it ended up sounding amazing. We wanted it to be a happier song, something melodic and mechanically raw, which is reflected in our instruments. We used didgeridoos, marimbas, bongos, shakers, and a few other instruments. The chanting was done by Musefist using a Shure SM57 mic. We started working on this song back in November of 2010 and have been working on it off and on since then, so we hope you like it. 11. Hello dear Judges! Hope you're all doing great! Contact Information Chernabogue Alexandre Mourey www.fflproduction.fr 20943 Submission Information Final Fantasy VI Rhapsody of Madness "Gogo's Theme" Nobuo Uematsu / SNES YouTube Source This mix was made for the first FF6 contest held by zircon for the B&R album, and I, unfortunately, didn't make it. But I love so much the source that I re-worked with new samples my arrangement. The inspiration behind this mix is the amazing source. I also always considered Gogo as a very strange character with a strange personality, so I tried to give multiple "feelings" to the arrangement (epic, groovy, sad, mad, ominous, etc.) In the end, I love the result and I hope it'll get passed (and if zircon has the opportunity to listen to it, maybe include it in the album lol). 12. Listened to this one a few times. I think the arrangement overall is fun, and I like the style change, but I felt like the sections were a bit too separated from one another. I kept noticing that there are a lot of vamp sections before a new section comes in. Improving your transitions will provide a stronger buildup throughout the piece. The bigger issue overall though is the production. Right now the sounds are pretty fake, and it's very noticeable. The bass in particular feels pretty weak. I think there are some frequencies that are missing that would bring out the low end better and provide a stronger base (pun intended?). The percussion is also lacking a lot of oomph, to the point where I can barely hear the cymbals. I think you've got a strong start here, and the arrangement is well on it's way, but the flow needs to be stronger with better transitions, and the production needs adjusting. Hopefully some other judges can provide some better feedback on the latter. NO (resubmit)
  13. Overall this is a pretty relaxing track to listen to. I like how you approached the source melody, it feels very natural and fits well into the setting. I'm not blown away by the samples here, and I think that might be a point of contention for whether this gets passed, along with the somewhat mechanical sequencing on the main melody, but I think the track does well regardless and is a good candidate for the front page. The interpretation is solid, and the variation is strong. Good luck to you on the rest of the vote! YES
  14. ReMixer: Pyro Paper Planes Real Name: Christopher Foss http://www.pyropaperplanes.com User ID: 25144 Game: Metroid II: Return of Samus Title: The Unnamed Frontier Artist: Pyro Paper Planes feat. VikingGuitar Origin: SR388 (Main Tunnel Theme) Cameo: The Baby Metroid Composer: Ryoji Yoshitomi System: Nintendo Game Boy Album: Harmony of a Hunter: 101% Run (http://www.shinesparkers.net/harmonyofahunter/download/) Track Comments: One of these days, I'm going to submit a track that isn't from the Metroid series… but not today, as I present my arrangement of SR388 from Metroid II: Return of Samus. The Unnamed Frontier marks the fifth time I've arranged the SR388 music track. I always seem to come back to this track. It's one of the few upbeat tracks in the Metroid series, and its musical structure is very similar to the original Brinstar track from Metroid. To me, it's one of the most underrated tracks from the series. I'm surprised no one from the OverClocked ReMix community has arranged this track yet. My goal for The Unnamed Frontier was to create a very electro-chill piece, where the beat would build up over time to form a catchy groove. I wanted the listener to feel like they could relax, and come to the realization that they accomplished their goals from completing an epic journey. While the length of the source tune wasn't particularly long, its melodic structure was very engaging and easy to work with. I also open with a small tribute to "The Baby Metroid", a wonderful and small anthem played towards the end of the game. Throughout most of the piece, I used a simple Yamaha Piano virtual instrument from Logic Studio (along with a few delay and reverb plug-ins). It was somewhat simple design, but I really like how it turned out. The synthesizers were all somewhat experimental, especially the delay effects. For the second half of the piece, the decision to modulate the key signature to a minor key was somewhat of a eureka moment, as it really helped the flow of the track (giving it a bit of much needed variety). I also became a little more liberal with the melodic line. The final touch to the piece was the contribution of VikingGuitar's solo, which gave the track that great climax that it needed. This piece also marks one of the few times were I used nothing but Logic Studio's assets (excluding a few minor choral pads). I was mainly inspired by two things. Firstly, I've always enjoyed the relaxing electro music that's often played in lounges. It might seem like an odd thing to take inspiration in, but it's the little musical touches in my day-to-day activities that makes things enjoyable in life. Secondly, I was heavily inspired by Boards of Canada's "Dayvan Cowboy". It has such a fantastic build up, it's a track that simply inspires me to do things. This piece is a first for several things. It's the first original arrangement I've finished that isn't a piano solo. It also marks the first time I've collaborated with someone. Like the planet SR388, this track marks new ground for me… an unnamed frontier. ------------------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=539Fb57LRxI
  15. The only reason I didn't want to mark this as a direct post was because some of the source connections felt a bit tenuous at times. That being said, i felt this was way above the bar in source personally. The production is solid, and the arrangement is really engaging. Parts of it remind me of some of the Wingless' Metroid mixes. I really dig it! YES

Link to submission: Contact Information ReMixer name: Vyper Real name: Joshua McLean E-mail: Website: http://vypermusic.com Userid: 27583 Submission Information Name of game arranged: Metroid Prime Name of arrangement: Drifts Aflame Name of song arranged: Ice Valley - Phendrana Drifts What is it about ice levels that demands high quality, catchy music? I honestly don't know, but I always enjoy a new ice track. Phendrana Drifts was, for me, the moment when Metroid Prime evolved. Most of the earlier environments were rehashed from Super Metroid, but the desolate, frozen wasteland littered with ice creatures and snow drifts was something new. And the music is awesome. So, this remix poses a simple question, what would happen if Magmoor bubbled up and overtook Phendrana? Or possibly, what if Ridley were locked in combat with Samus in the icy region? The answer to both, of course, is serenity boiling over into chaos. ------------------------
  17. You've got some good arrangement ideas here, but there's a lot of repetition going on, which is pretty much the first thing that I noticed. Overall, more change-ups will really help you; drums, bass patterns, chord progressions, parts. I'd also add a little more humanization into your parts; some of it comes across a little too stiffly. Nice transition into the main Zelda theme, though, I thought that was pretty solid, and I liked what you had going on there. Production has some issues as well. Watch out for a little clipping/static around 0:55ish and a couple of the louder parts. The bass feels a little weak overall, and could maybe be doubled or expanded with some pads. I wasn't a total fan of the lead synth at 1:14, thought I might put that down to personal choice or towards the abrupt cutoffs of the notes. I think you've really got a solid start here, but I'd like to hear you work more on adding variation first, then cleaning up some of the production. Hopefully the other judges will be able to add more advice on the latter half of that. Hit up the WIP forums to get some more feedback then throw this at us again, Beth! NO (resubmit)

As such, it was created using only FL Studio presets. I figured I made it suck as little as possible given that restriction, so I figured I'll use it as my first solo submission. I know it can get a tiny bit repetitive but that's mostly due to the genre, I think. I'm definitely willing to make whatever edits you guys feel would improve the track. -------------------
  19. Oof, I listening to this one a lot, and honestly I think there's just not enough in terms of connection for me to call it. I love the atmosphere you've got going on here, and overall the production is pretty solid. It's just stretched too thin in terms of being recognizable. Definitely hope to hear more from you though! NO
  20. The emotion in this is great! I love the overall arrangement, and I definitely think you always do a great job with your writing. I agree with larry that the opening is a bit stiff overall and you could use some sample upgrades on your flute especially. Aside from that this was a wonderful listen. YES
  21. Yeah, nice fix-up here. I'd nitpick that the reverb is a bit on the heavy side of things, which muddies up some of the parts a bit, but it's not so much of an issue that it's below the bar as-is. There's some good energy in this, I like the varied sections, and overall you've got some strong rhythm section writing that compliments the parts well. Nice work. YES
  22. Don't agree with Larry here, I think the production and balance are solid. The arrangement is super fun, and you've make this really fun to listen to! Great source pick, good runs, nice solo. YES
  23. Sweet bro, nice fixes! Definitely has a very emotional delivery here, and your performances are pretty strong here. I'd say it's one of your stronger vocal performances overall, so nice work there as well! I can hear the issues the guys bring up, but I think overall they are very minor in the long run, and while getting a fix up would be nice, I don't feel it warrants a no. Nice work! YES
  24. This is pretty fun! Love the opening overall, sets a very dancey mood, and is a strong lead-in for the melody. Your treatments of the source are pretty straightforward, but tastefully done. Larry brings up the point of the samples, and while they aren't super amazing, I think you work with them well here, and they don't sound out of place to me. If I were to nit-pick I would suggest that you work on your humanization on your parts, as they can be a bit stiff. Nice work otherwise. YES
  25. Oof at 1:35. I am tempted to say that that might even be a dealbreaker on it's own, but I think Vinnie is pretty correct here that there's a loot of boomy-ness out of the bass and it's overpowering a lot of the other elements. I think this is a pretty good candidate for fixing up that one more time to adjust the notes in the bells and work out the balance just right. The arrangement is strong and fun, I enjoyed it quite a bit. One more! NO (resubmit, please)
