Definitely an interesting track that is something that's a little more on the chill side, despite the pretty expansive and varied drums. Overall I'd say I'm pretty close to Wes's opinion. I'd have liked some more variation in the soundscape; the sounds are pretty consistent along with the tempo and dynamic level. Some more drastic changes would have added more interest level to the track. I'd say in the end that this passes the bar, and people will dig listening to it. YES(borderline) -
Going to have to go with Larry on this one. It's a super fun arrangement to bring this to SNES sounds like you did, but it's not really what we're looking for here. I would love to hear something that mixes between your original works and what you've done here, but otherwise it's great fun hearing all your works in general. NO

I'm in between where Larry is standing and where Vinnie/Andrew are. I think the sounds (and in some areas the realism/humanism) definitely aren't where they need to be, and that for me is the dealbreaker in this mix. I also think that the level of interpretation of the first 1/3 is lacking. If it came down to just the arrangement, I think I'd be borderline YES, because after that things open up and are pretty interpretive, but I certainly wouldn't mind more expansion as well in that opening section. I'm hearing a lot of what Halc is saying here, but I think I'm just on the other side of the fence. My issue mostly stems from the second half of the mix. Listening through, the second half isn't nearly as interesting as the first. Part of it is the lack of melody that's relating strongly to the source. Also, the constant tempo/sound structure start to wear thing as things go along. I think there's more that you can do here to bring things together more strongly, so I want you to revisit this one. I will say your production is definitely getting much stronger, as Halc also said. Balance is clear, and the elements are represented well. Send this one back please! NO (resubmit, please) -

Been listening to this one for a while now. It has some good aspects and some not-so-good aspects, and I'm pretty on the fence with it. The melodies are definitely personalized, and the track overall is a fun listen, with nothing sounding out of place. The transitions, as Andrew mentioned, are nothing super special, but overall the track sounds pretty cohesive. I would have liked there to be more interplay with the melodies, which I think you could have done, instead of sticking straight to a medley format, which is one of the detractors overall. In terms of production things are mostly pretty strong, but what bugged me was that the track overall has a super constant tempo that is quite driven into me with the drums to the point that it started growing old. The track runs a little long as is, and the combination with the drums doesn't help much. A stronger change of dynamics or mood would have added more variation and made the track stronger as a result. On the good side, the synths are pretty nostalgic and used to good effect. Things are clear, and the balance is strong as well. Again, I'm pretty on the fence with this, so I'm curious what other judges will think. I will go with (for now): YES (borderline) -

First time I've tried something like this, so be harsh so I can do it better next time. : D This remix was so different from what I'm used to. It was an attempt for me to get better at drum programming and mixing. Ironically, the drums end up being the least interesting part of this song, IMO. But they still sound well mixed after some help from the WIP forums and Jamison Randall (aka TheGuitahHeroe) who also mastered the song for me (THANKS A LOT DUDE) Also, speaking of TheGuitahHeroe - his Castlevania mix "The Whip's Memory" happens to be a lot inspiration for this track. Also, I probably wouldn't have made this track without listening to the doujin circle "FELT"'s remix of this first, found here for those interested (you should be, it's good): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hRh82D5eb4 I love this song so much, and a lot of this actually inspired me too (so much so that I used the chorus' melody from the song for the outro for this song as a tribute : D). Lot's of crazy stuff going on in this song overall. Chiptune arps, dubstep, and super fast hat patterns. After the half way point, I decided that I wanted to tone down the crazy and keep with my philosophy of "simple is better". Hopefully that works out well and doesn't feel to weird in the context of the song as a whole. Time for a source breakdown: 0:00 - 1:52 it's pretty much completely source with my own little tidbits thrown in there to make it sound more original. 1:53 - 2:42 original material for the most part. I don't recall throwing any source in there at all, actually, but I don't want say for sure and be wrong. But I'm pretty sure. 2:43 - 3:08 Brought the arp and chords back in from the source with my own little solo on top. 3:09 - 3:36 source played at a higher key 3:37 - 4:11 fadeout and end, chords from source playing with that chorus from the doujin remix I mentioned playing So about 196 seconds out of 251 for source material, which also includes the solo's with only the chords playing in the background and arrangements I made to the source myself. So yup, I hope that helps. Don't think there's anything else to say, so just enjoy the music!

Here's the concept (I know it may be cheesy): An adolescent boy feels useless and outcast from society. He meets a girl who gives him the power to control the weather. The two fall in love. They get married and are dancing at their wedding when a man comes and takes the (now) woman away. Our hero conjures a massive storm to slow his opponent. As the woman is slowing him down, the villain drops the woman and begins to run away. The hero chases down the man who eventually gets struck by a bolt of lightning. Our hero returns to reunite with his love but, to his dismay, the woman is nowhere to be found. The years pass, and our hero remains alone. Wes's vote here is really solid, and you should take all his advice to heart. Wes implied (and I will follow up) that the opening run-through being a cover could expand out sooner. Looking at it objectively, half of this mix isn't showing any of your potential or skill. When you start on the second run through there is a lot of creative takes on the melodies, and I definitely could see you taking this even further, but just as I'm hoping for more it ends. (On a similar note, the ending is a bit lackluster overall). Production also has issues. Along with the instrumentation staying stagnant, I felt like the entire track was a bit quiet, and there wasn't much use of dynamics throughout. You can add a lot more expression and emotion if you use those two aspects to your advantage. Definitely a good base to start, and you can certainly do a lot more here. Hope to hear from you again! Wes covered a lot of issues that I wanted to mention here. The lack of humanization is what definitely sticks out the most, and it really makes everything feel very robotic. The phrasing is what sticks out next, which is what Wes touched on. Having the two halves of the main riff played together is awkward because the second half disregards the downbeat of the measure, and the bass drum trying to emphasize it causes a clash between the two. If you want to rework the phrasing how you have it, it needs to be supported by the backing parts as well. The ending also kinda fizzles out, and I'd like to hear a stronger approach there. Overall the samples aren't bad, and if you can rework them with some more humanization and balance they could definitely be workable. The arrangement needs some more work, but could also be reworked with the new phrasing as well. It will definitely take effort, but you have a base here that has promise. NO

Some really neat ideas going on here. I love the expansion of the source you have in the intro. So many people focus on other parts of this source, so it was refreshing to hear a different approach. The into does hold on a bit too long for my tastes, and I think you could have cut about 10 to 15 seconds there and still had the same effect. I felt like once things settled in you hit autopilot on the arrangement. The melodies remain pretty conservative to the original, as well as the structure. The drums also become static, which drags the energy down. The solo section also overall feels a bit aimless, and some of the note/riff choices felt a little haphazard and didn't fit the chords well. Overall the arrangement needs to have more in terms of your own voice with less repetition. Sound-wise I wasn't feeling the overall mixing. The guitar sounds a bit muffled and the organ could come out a bit more. The drums overall are weak; the snare sounds halfway between a snare and a bass at times, and I had a tough time hearing the bass drum overall. The organ comes in at 2:47, and it feels very crowded by the guitar and other parts going on. I had a very difficult time making out what notes it was playing. The overall muddiness comes back in some other sections, like 3:30(ish). There's no clear lead instrument, and the arrangement falters from that lack as well. Lastly, the overall playing isn't very tight. Nothing's wildly out of time, but because things aren't matching up as well as they could it gets very distracting to listen to. Overall the timing needs to be tightened up. I don't want to sound overly harsh on this, but there is definitely a lot of work to go here. I did really enjoy how you started the mix out, which was a pretty fresh and creative take on a source that is mixed quite often, but when things get going the issues start to pop up. I'd suggest using our WIP forums to get some more feedback on improving your mixing skills and to keep working on the arrangement as well. Good luck! NO -

I'm going to have to agree with both Emu and Vinnie here. The source usage when present is pretty straightforward, and while there is definitely a good style adaption going on, the straightforwardness of some parts compared to the lack of source in others is really separating the track a bit too much. Combined with Vinnie's crits about the drums and the low end being muddy, I just don't think this one is where it needs to be at this point. I hope you fix it up and send it back to us, as there's some good stuff and you have some talent to get it done. NO (resubmit) -

Very cool that i get to close out a YES! Love the energy to this one, and I'll agree with all the bros about the sampling being overall tastefully done. I'd say that my one gripe is that the 'shoot' sound effect doesn't feel like it's exactly in time for me, and it pulls me out of the track slightly each time I hear it. Overall it's pretty minor, and certainly doesn't effect my decision. YES -

Yeah, this has some really sweet vibes going on. I love how laid-back the percussion and bass is, and C7's trumpet only plays that up more. I'm also really digging how you end a lot of phrases with the holds and slight pauses. Very nuanced and it (and other details) add a lot. Very sweet! YES -

The arrangement is definitely good, but I'll agree that the mechanical parts, along with the somewhat uninspired drumwriting, are dragging this down moreso than I thought in my first listen-through. I'm listening to the improved version, and overall the arrangement is pretty interesting. I'm not picking up on the Metal Harbor sections as much as the Wisp stuff, but there's still plenty in there regardless (I'll admit to being little tired as well). I'm not really a fan of some of the mechanical background noises, and while I think it was done for contrast, I don't really feel it's working well here. Aside from that I'd say some sections are a bit crowded in the mid-ranges, but everything was still clear. YES*changed below* -
Still a YES for me. I've had this song as a WIP on my ipod for ages, and have always loved the arrangement. I think the arrangement is somewhat long, but there's plenty of strong references throughout that bring up the melody, and I also felt like it never got repetitive. Hope this one passes, as I've always wanted to see it on the front page. YES

Wazzup u guyz? Guifrog's now (literally) playing with Mexico this time. Just so you know, I was truly amazed by the success of Musicolours, which covered sources from both The Sims 1 and 3! That said, why not have a ride with The Sims 2 as well? Here's some facts: GAME: The Sims 2 SOURCE: Bare Bones ( )REMIX NAME & LINK: Playground You guys remember when you played those very common childhood games? IIRC, I had two favorites: tag and hide-and-seek. Must say, though, I still play some of those games when I get the chance XD! I do have (and make) some little friends, y'know . So, this mix is about those games, and I structured it like this: 0:00-0:30 -> Ring-Around-the-Rosie. Not exactly the folk song, but the game's idea. 0:31-0:46 -> Mimic. Guess which animal the timbale's mimicking? ;D 0:47-0:57 -> Don't ask me why, but I named it "volleyball" 0:58-1:09 -> Jump rope as the rhythm goes! 1:10-1:33 -> Cuica? Conga? Definitely Monkey-in-the-Middle! 1:34-1:44 -> Dodgeball's one crazy game, just experiment with plenty of people and more than one ball! 1:45-2:07 -> Such a mystery... Which means, Hide-and-Seek... What if... 2:08-2:31 -> ...It turns into Tag?! 2:32-2:42 -> There's a moment where we all get tired from it, so we play "Take-a-Rest" or something. BUT... 2:43-3:09 -> ...Children have absurd levels of energy, and there we go again 'til the end of the day! Can you tell I had lots of fun doing this one? ^^ Hope you have a fun listen as well!

Hi DJP & Judges! This is a remix I originally made for The Sonic Zone Remix Competition that I was hosting over in the forums. The zone theme I chose was Lava Reef (Sonic 3&K), and this was for my Round 2 matchup which was supposed to be against AkumajoBelmont (Tidal Tempest - Sonic CD - JP). I know I needed to go all out if I wanted to have any chance to beat him, but he unfortunately had to drop out due to time constraints, but I think this mix was still well-received! I really liked the Tidal Tempest source and wanted to do a pretty chill, downtempo mix based around that source's structure and then find interesting ways to weave in the Lava Reef source. What I ended up with was still my most laid-back mix to date, but it does has quite a few jazzy bits that always tend to pop-up in my mixes (whether I intend them to or not) between the rhythmic synth and the piano. I think I did a good job creating a lush atmosphere with this song. What I was going for was a relaxed, yet somewhat dark & exotic tropical feel. Given my sources, that seemed appropriate. The waves & jungle noises in the intro were meant to set that "tropical island" setting and then the layering of the bass, heavy ethereal pads, and the smooth synth lead were meant to create a very full & powerful soundscape. The jazzy piano bits and the trumpet solo were meant to infuse the song with some additional life and character. I was really trying to create a song that would transport the listener to another place. I could go on forever on how I view the setting and various sections of this song, but I think you guys get the point! Speaking of the trumpet solo, I recruited C7 (Adam Prack) to perform the part, and he absolutely nailed it! He took the solo I wrote and added a lot of his own personal touches, between the grace notes, run up, etc., and he completely blew me away with the performance. That last bit was well over an octave above the bar, but he was still able to sustain the notes. I just can't say enough about his performance, it's really solid stuff. It definitely made the piece, in my opinion! Not to mention, he was a lot of fun to collaborate with as well! This version is slightly revised from my compo entry version. I got some great feedback from my buddies in the WIP forums, particularly Phonetic Hero, Sir Jordanius, Amphibious, & Gario, that helped point out some areas that needed a little extra polish. Lots of thanks to them for their invaluable feedback. Also a big thanks to everyone that participated in the Sonic compo. It has been an absolute blast hosting the compo and seeing the support & excitement within the community. Overall I got to say I'm really proud of this finished track and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it! Thanks! Here is the source usage breakdown, with YouTube links!
