  1. I'm pretty much lining up with Halc on this. Personally I'm not feeling this one as much as a lot of your other stuff, but it's easily where it needs to be for OCR, and I know a lot of people will be diggin' this. I would have liked the leads to be a little more prominent, but that's mostly a genre thing. Overall nice work, as per usual, Mike. YES
  2. Miiiiiight be because the mixer didn't list the source carefully. That being said, you've got some slick flow here, and the lyrics are pretty fun (what I could make out, I'm terrible at hearing lyrics sometimes). The source (with the correct link now) is definitely apparent, and I like the drums you added to it. Once things get established, however, I'm not hearing any development to the source, and aside from the rapping there's not much going on. I know that's a part of the genre, but I think there's more that can be done in terms of the details to bring this to life. Similarly, at 1:36, your track is really pretty short. Possibly having some breaks between the rapping for interludes or a chorus could give you the time to develop on the source more. The ending is kinda lazy, too, so I'd love to hear more out of that as well. Definitely something I could see being on the site, but it needs some more development. Hope you expand! NO (resubmit)
  3. Halc has this spot-on. Really liking where you're going with this, but it definitely needs more in terms of variation, and the production definitely needs to be finessed more. I'm not quite as stuck on the soundscape needing to be changed around, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to more variation, either. Dunno if you'll have the drive after so long to fix this up, or even the project files. I hope you do, because I'd love to see this on the front page. NO (resubmit)
  4. That makes more sense with MAGfest, but we actually get a pretty decent crowd who doesn't know what OCR is at Otakon. Definitely excited to go, even though I'll most likely be missing the panel itself!
  5. Really unique approach here. Love that it's very percussion-heavy, and the variation in the percussion is very strong. I will agree that this is a bit on the longer side, but I personally didn't have a problem with the length, and even the somewhat repetitious feel. I could see this going either way, but I dig it quite a bit. YES
  6. Little to add to what Andrew already said. The track is awesome, but it's too much of a medley. Still pretty sweet though, man! NO
  7. I'm finding that my opinion is a combination of Larry's and Wes's. The arrangement is super fun, and I love the time signature changes. The off-the-cuff feel is very nice as well. That being said, I wasn't super fond of some of the synths used, and I agree that the soundscape seems a tad thin. I'd say this needs just a little more finesse and it will be ready to go, I hope you touch it up! NO (resubmit, please)
  8. I think Drew nailed this. There are some parts of the arrangement that are really kickin', but the sounds get old very quickly, and the arrangement does start to feel a bit repetitious after a while. I would love to hear this cleaned up a bit, taking Halc's suggestions, and maybe altering the arrangement a little to get some more variation in there. NO (resubmit)
  9. Definitely liked the ethnic approach here. I think the mix overall is pretty creative, even when the melodies stay pretty close to the original. There's plenty of creativity in the background that more than makes up for it, and I found it to be an enjoyable listen. Halc mentioned some faults, but they are pretty minor in the long run, and the track is still above the bar. YES
  10. This was a pretty awesome listen, I loved the energy it conveyed, and some of the little personal touches you added were very nice. Overall this stays super close to the source though, both in sound design as well as through the arrangement. As-is it's just too close to fit our standards, even with the added solo. Based on what I'm hearing, I'd love to hear you work on a track that's closer to what we go for here, and hope you submit again! NO
  11. I've gotta say, this is a pretty liberal approach to the source at times. The breakdown you provided is a little wonky, but I get most of what you're saying. Personally, through my own listening before reading the breakdown I wasn't hearing a connection until like 0:57. I get what you were going for after reading, but a lot of the track isn't going to be for a casual listener. I'd say this one is in the edge in terms of recognizability vs. our standards here. That being said, I think with the breakdown as well as the nice job overall on production gives this the push over the bar for me. I can honestly see this going either way, so I wish you luck on the rest of the vote. ..also, yeah, that fade-out. Wouldn't mind seeing that addressed. YES (conditional on ending fade-out)
  12. There are definitely some flaws in the track. What stands out most is how quiet the marimbas are compared to the xylo, glock, and set, but given the live setting I think it's forgiveable. My other small gripe is that some of the arrangement feels a bit overly sparse, even for a small ensemble. That being said, I think this is a pretty fun and creative take on the source, and it's a natural fit. I can honestly see judges going either way based on the critiques mentioned above, but I'm OK with giving this a YES
  13. I think you called this one yourself on the source. Your mix is super close to the original. Nothing wrong with that as is, but it's not something that's going to work for OCR standards. In terms of mixing, I think you did a good job of bringing everything together with the samples you have. I wasn't super convinced on the brass samples, but the woodwinds and percussion was pretty nice. Sequencing feels a little mechanical, and that along with the arrangement side of things would be what I suggest working on the most. I'm thinking you're not really going to be revamping this for front-page standards as it sounds pretty complete as is. But if you do, I'll look forward to hearing it! NO (resub?)
  14. Been thinking on this one for a while. A couple of things stick out as being pretty good; I like that you stay close to the source melodically, but really change around the structure and add the glitching in and other effects. I do think in those respects the level of personalization is high. The things that are dragging this down for me is the generic soundscape. Right now the sounds, while balanced, don't really feel very attention-holding. Having the soundscape change around more might help. The drums also stand out as being very generic and are on autopilot for most of the mix. I definitely want to see the drums get some TLC and really enhance the mix. I might be inclined to say that if the drums were personalized it could make the mix for me without anything else being changed. As it stands, I think this is pretty close, but it needs that push to get over the bar. I hope you revisit the drums, and possibly see about tweaking the soundscape as well. NO (resubmit)
  15. The opening has some really neat chord ideas. Once you get into things, I'm noticing right away that the guitars sound pretty quiet in the mix. In fact, the whole mix could come up, as it's pretty quiet overall. The piano that comes in also sounds pretty mechanical, and needs to be humanized a bit more. The arrangement idea has some promise, but I have to say that it feels...sterile. Everything feels very by-the-book and is lacking emotion to it. Maybe it's the volume, but I'd love to hear some more soul! There's definitely a good idea behind this, but I think it's got some ways to go. NO

I love that you picked some themes that wouldn't normally be considered. Metal definitely works for these themes, and I like the strong approach to all of them. Overall I do wish there was a little more development of the actual track, and wish you could expand more on the themes, but with the project files gone, I'm still OK giving this a pass as is. YES
  17. Definitely some interesting textures here. Arrangement-wise, as usually you've got some great interpretation here. If I were to nitpick anything, I'd say that the piece doesn't quite have the amount of direction I'd like it to. The lack of a strong build does kinda affect my attention overall, but it's not a serious factor (again, a nitpick, and I do it because I know you can handle it ). Production is about at your normal level. Personally I'm not crazy about the bass sound, but it does what it needs to do. The rest of the sounds are passable, but not great. I think you could finesse some more humanization and emotion out of the flute and strings, but again it's a nitpick in an otherwise strong track. You do a great job of delivering some strong arrangement ideas, and I love hearing your stuff! YES
  18. The opening had me worried at first, gotta be honest. The samples are not good there, and it was setting itself up for a direct cover. Thankfully things pick up with both better samples and more interpretation. I will say that the main theme lends itself to an electronica style, not something I would have thought about just listening to the source. In terms of the arrangement, I think this gets a little too repetitive to the source without many original sections or breaks. I think there's a lot of expansion you can do here, and I also think you have it in you to do so. As already mentioned, the opening isn't doing it for me in terms of samples. Either updating that or nixing it would be my suggestion there. The rest of the song is somewhat generic, but by no means is in a spot that it needs to be changed...except that clap (snare?) sample. Whatever's playing opposite the bass is pretty weak sounding. On a similar note, I'd suggest adding some fills and other little interest points in the drums as well. There's a solid start here, but it needs work. I'd start with the arrangement, making it more interesting and more divergent from the source. Hope to hear this one again! NO (resubmit)

Original Decision Remix Title: Ninja Ganon Game: Ninja Gaiden, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Songs: Basilisk Mine (I think it's technically called Ryu's Determination?), Gerudo Valley Remixer name: MtM I was told to polish up the production a bit and resubmit (I actually noticed how bad the production sounded when I got some new headphones for my birthday a couple weeks ago). So I fixed it! And here is the (hopefully) final mix!

Third times a charm right? Anyway, after reading the judges feedback, I decided to just start the track from scratch again. It was a dangerous decision to make as it was highly likely that I could forget or omit the aspects of the mix that made it what it is. Having been such a long time since the first submission and even the second submission, my abilities have improved. Maybe not by much, but enough to warrant that hearing the track again after so long I could definitely hear what the judges were saying. What I found really difficult with this was conveying the emotion and a human feeling with the style of the track. Hopefully, though, the solo's and such are musical and unmechanical to any listeners. I was glad to read that Zircon enjoyed the (as he put it) "brutal" orch hits They are now gone forever. No lie, it was really difficult finding something to replace the orch hits with, but it could be said that I just needed to remove myself from the remix a bit more to objectively see......they were terrible. Other than that, in this mix I've experimented with different types of reverb and tried to use it to creative effect. I wanted to really play on dreamy nature of the source tune with vast, spacey reverbs. It took a long time to get the right amounts and make sure that none of it was causing mud or ruining the energy and clarity of the mix. Originally this mix was meant to be chilled and ambient, so using the reverb creatively was an attempt to bring back the idea that conceived this mix. Many thanks to the judges again for your feedback (Deia's YES definitely stopped me from giving up on this mix) and also DjMystix. If this makes the front page, then this one is dedicated to him!

It was an interesting idea so I went online hoping to find some midi files from Minecraft. I found the piano midi for the song Calm 3 (Sweden) and proceeded to play around with it in Reaper, just producing straight covers with additional instruments at first. It wasn't until I realized that I could reverse the midi that the piece started to take shape. The harp part at the beginning is actually the last several bars of the original song, albeit reversed. After several months of working on and off, the piece is finally done. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out; there isn't anything that I would change. One last thing, Calming Dawn is named so because it is a pretty calming, soothing song, and because, while writing it, I envisioned the song as being the musical representation of dawn in Minecraft. The Penderecki strings simulating a gentle rain, the female choir conveying the sense of a lifting fog, and the entrance of the piano symbolizing the rising sun peeking over the horizon.
