Game: Contra 3 - The Alien Wars Publisher: Konami System: SNES Track: Stage 3 / Neo Kobe Steel Factory Composers: Miki Yanagisawa / Masanori Adachi / Tappy Iwase Remix Name: "Salvation" Link to original music: http://youtu.be/bymCJ5sZQ-Q SPC File: http://www.zophar.net/music/spc/contra-3-the-alien-wars.html Comment: My second take on "Neo Kobe Steel Factory": A whole different approach this time as I went for a slower romantic Schumann-like piano, backed by some softly played strings. I tried to expand on the harmonic content of the original. To my amazement, it started to sound a bit like "Secret of Mana". I somewhat prefer that version over my other remix of that same track - short but sweet. Best, Manu

Remixer name: Brent Wollman UserID: 41181 Games arranged: Descent I and Descent II Name of arrangement: Eternal Descent Songs arranged: Descent II: Credits and Descent I: Credits This mix took forever. I'm not sure why, but I had a really hard time getting everything to sound right. At this point I think I finally have something good It is a remix of a couple tracks I've loved for a long time. I used to watch the credits sequence to Descent I and II over and over just to hear this music, so I really wanted to do the source tunes justice. Here is a source breakdown: 0:00-0:41 Pretty overt use of the intro to the Descent II track 0:41-0:48 This synth riff sounds a lot like the bassline to the Descent II track, not sure if it's close enough to count. 0:48-2:16 This whole section is pretty overt. First, that melody from Descent II reenters, then the main verse melody comes in on the lead guitar. There is a little break playing that other melody for a few seconds, then the vocals come in with the verse melody again. 2:16-2:44 The vocals are singing the chorus from the Descent II track. 2:44-3:25 Here you can hear the main melody to the Descent I track on the plucked synth, as well as a bit of the Descent II track's chorus on the vox. 3:25-5:29 This is where there may be a problem. The chord progression on the clean guitar sounds kind of like the one at the end of the Descent I track, but the connection is pretty loose. I'm pretty sure that the synth solo uses the chord progression from the beginning of the Descent I track, but since the solo is original it's kinda hard to hear any connection. 5:29-end Back to overt usage of the Descent II track's chorus. And the lyrics: I have a long way to go Till I'm anywhere but here And my days fade like smoke And my mind drifts away Reprieve is but a dream And it will not obtain Sources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSmp2Q_gPk

Hi, I have attached my submission for the music remix called 'Lon Lon Dream' Details: Remix Name: CTPLR Real Name: Tracey Wong Email Address: treycwong@gmail.com Website: www.ctplrstudio.com Name of Game arranged: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Name of Arrangement: Lon Lon Dream Name of Individual song arranged: Lon Lon Ranch by Koji Kondo OCRemix Reference Site: http://ocremix.org/song/1004 Comments: When I heard the original track, I love the feeling and sense of 'trap'. I believe it could be more expressed. Therefore, my remix goal was to have a timeless, dreamy feel, still keeping the Koji Kondo style. Thank you. Best Regards, Tracey ----------------

I changed the feel of the song to something of a more light, relieved setting than that of the tense, minor feel of the original; while still keeping the mysterious air within the song. I wanted less of a strong drum beat, and more of a smooth, flowing piece, like the feeling you would experience by standing at the top of the tower, with clouds surrounding you and the sun setting in the distance. A feeling of prophetic influence and glorious release to the sky surrounding. As such, the arrangement focuses less on the drums and more on the chords and flow. Many have made the remark that the melody of "Tower of Heaven" is nearly identical to that of "Secret of the Forest," and with that fact in mind, I decided to mix that in with the rest, to make a nice minor bridge of the song, both pulling some of the original tension and feel from the OST, and also referencing the close connection between the two songs. "Secret of the Forest" was not meant to be the main feature of the song; it is more of an excerpt to express similarity and to add a bit more tense--but beautiful--feel to the bridge. This track was produced entirely on Garageband 2011, by ear, aside from the drum tracks which were arranged on FL Studio 9. I take massive pride in this production as it is one I have spent the most time on this piece. I particularly enjoy the lead writing I produced for this arrangement, as well as the solo piano chorus that is written in. I do enjoy using the chords and toying around melodically with them, so you will definitely hear some playful sixteenth note chromatic licks within the song. I hope you thoroughly enjoy the track I have to offer! ------------------------- - Pokéhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPjRTvMAptg - Trigger

DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
There isn't much to add to what Andrew has already said here. I will say that there are still some dissonant sections, like 0:11 between the flute and warbly synth, as well as some of the backing chords to the melody. Overall it feels a bit like you're trying to fit the source into a chord structure that is similar but not exactly working as intended, which is throwing things off. Some sections work well, and others just aren't cutting it. The violin feels a little mechanical, as well as being pasted. You could add a bit more humanization there. Gonna have to send this one back to you again. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Master of Monsters 'Shadow of the Castle'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm going to have to echo that right now the arrangement really is missing the energy it needs to really keep interest. Part of it is in the soundscape; the melody is pretty meloncholy, and without something to keep the energy up it tends to feel a little lifeless. The drumwriting could be expanded as well, as Andrew also said. I think you could also do more with varying up the instruments. My ears get tired of the sounds overall, lofi or not, and I'd like to hear more change-ups. Crits are a bit harsh this time around, but I know you can do better based on your other submissions. This one needs some work on the soundscape overall and the arrangement could also be restructured a bit to be more interesting. NO (resubmit) -
OCR02557 - *YES* Castlevania 'Wild Night' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Thought about this one for most of the morning, and I've been going back and forth. It's a pretty tough call on how the source is treated. I'm inclined to give it a nod, as there are plenty of moments that are very solidly placed in the source. That being said, it's still got a good deal of liberal sections. Production is about on your usual par, where the instruments aren't sounding bad, but generally there's a mechanical feel overall that drags things down. I'll agree with Andrew's points in terms of the brass and flute. Good luck in the rest of the vote. YES (borderline) -
OCR02630 - *YES* Zero Wing 'For Great Justice' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm still hearing a little in the way of timing issues, but they are minor, and I am nitpicking. Aside from that, I'm feeling this one a lot better than last time. Agreed that compression is a bit heavy, but it's also not a dealbreaker. YES -
I think Andrew got this pretty much correct. The lack of a solid low end is making this overall feel a little weird, and the drums could use a bit more oomph overall. I don't know if it's also because of the bass, but I feel like the soundscape doesn't develop quite like it should. The sounds start to get tiring on the ears after a while, and I think you could do more to change them up overall as well. Love the source you used, and I think you treated it pretty decently, but the production side still needs some work. NO (resubmit)

*NO* BIT.TRIP VOID 'BIT.TRIP VOID remix'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
This 1000 times. So, this one had me thinking for a long time. I can promise you that if you didn't provide a breakdown, I would have never found any of the source parts (which are mostly ambient and not super memorable TBH) in the mix. With the breakdown, I am hearing them better, but overall it's very sparse, and a lot of the source parts are downplayed. I think as a whole they need to have a stronger focus in the mix. I'm also noticing that all the source parts you use sound extremely close to the original parts. The sounds are near identical, which is cool if you re-created them, but it's also making me wish there was a little more variation in either the sounds of the small melodic lines that you do use. The meat of the problem to me is the sparse feeling of the source usage and how similar it is to the original. It doesn't help how stretched out the track is, as well, and I think this could benefit from some trimming. NO -
I'll keep bugging Dave about getting the restock in. As for new shirt designs, we've been discussing something along those lines. Meanwhile, I'll continue to rock out my custom hand-painted OCR girl's shirt. And while I'm bragging, I've also done some shirt customization, and might open that up to the public for a price. Oh, and then there's this.

Original decision Hey, it's Guifrog again with a new version of Salam Ala Albak, from the Main Theme of Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn/PC)! ;D This has been put on hold for a bit of time, but since I haven't been working on any ReMix lately and this one's my last ready(?) thing to resub, there you go. Adjusted EQ, flute articulations and few percussion issues; bowed strings in the original section don't feel lonely anymore; decided to keep the sitarish/bouzouki-like sound, but put a bit more brightness and decay on it; breakdown's the same. CTRL+V if needed, tho: 0:08-1:08, 1:28-2:28, 3:51-end => Corresponds to 0:00-0:26 of the source; 1:12-1:24, 2:32-2:44, 3:36-3:48 => 0:27-0:38 of the source; 2:48-3:35 => Everything's original. All songs are written by David Wise. Link to the Original Soundtrack Song (Source): Additional ReMix Comments: Late in Summer 2010, a well-respected OCR community member informed me of the DKC3 album project and suggested that I contact Emunator, despite the fact that all of the tracks were reserved at the time. I was told that a track likely would be dropped, and in this case, it was Cranky's Dojo. It was an excellent opportunity that I was honoured to seize, especially since I had no posted ReMixes on the site. I selected the Roland Fantom X6 workstation keyboard to remix the track, and began compiling various samples from Roland's World Collection and Complete Orchestra expansion boards. Being a past MIDI transcriber, I wanted to sequence Cranky's Dojo accurately and build from there. My initial WIP was nothing more than a transcription of the source with an improvised synth lead, but the director accepted it. This simple recording was the beginning of a long line of ideas for the remix I dubbed "Cranky's Mojo." My original plan was to have a bit of a dance section and mix in a Chinese-Japanese refrain, but the dance part became sort of a synth rock hybrid. While performing a trumpet solo improv overlay on Yoshi's "Tropical Island" from Mario Party, I got the idea of using the sample for a jazzy section of the piece, and it was then that I realised I would separate my remix into movements. A new chord progression for the source melody came to mind and I went on to use it for the aforementioned East-Asian part of the arrangement. After many hours of labour, I was quite pleased with the results. A moody first movement, an upbeat rock section with a lot of source, an Oriental part, and a 1940s sassy swing made this remix very dynamic. However, it had much room for improvement. An opportunity arose to enhance Cranky's Mojo, which the director for the album approved. With some advice, I implemented a richer piano arrangement for the opening movement, a more realistic rock drumline using Yamaha Motif ES8 keyboard samples, and a myriad of smaller refinements. The outcome of the extra effort feels much more polished than the previous recordings. Many thanks go to Bahamut, Nutritious, Emunator, Cody Wedel, DragonAvenger, Flexstyle, and all those who helped make this possible. Sincerely, Peach

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 2 'Thornbrush Thump' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
There are certainly some good arrangement ideas here, and overall I like the structure of your track. I'm definitely going to agree with Andrew on the panned synth as well as the drums needing some fixing. I'm also a little bothered by how mechanical a lot of the parts are. I'd like some humanization overall to make it feel less sharp-edged. Also, more ending, please! NO (resubmit) -
Super awesome, Kate! Love it!

OCR02460 - *YES* Ecco: The Tides of Time 'Hypnotica'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the anxiety this one has. Arrangement overall is pretty great, so nice work there! I'm not as bothered by the 'lack' of ending as Vig, but I agree that there could be a little more there. I'm going to have to side with Andrew on the production aspects though; That bass coming in so straight kind of sets an awkward start to the mix, which I think should really get fixed up to improve the first impressions. A lot of the track felt pretty crowded to me, even though the balance is mostly there. Love to see this front page, fix it up! NO (resubmit, please) -
The arrangement is definitely strong, and I think you took the original in a good direction. There's definitely some good work arrangement-wise, so I think you are fully able to express some confidence in that area of things! I will agree with Andrew that the mixing is a little muddy at times, but I think it's still at a strong enough level for a pass. YES

OCR02494 - *YES* Final Fantasy 'The Last Story'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Personally, I have no idea what's being said, so it's all kinda background music to me. It would be easier if I had the lyrics in front of me, but I will do without them in general. Overall I'm not wowed by this, but there's plenty of source there, the interpretation is there, and production is over the bar. Not my favorite, but I think there will be people who will enjoy it. Took a relisten to this, and I'm going to have to revamp my vote as well. Aside from :39-:46 being from Ballad of the Wind Fish, and another quote appearing later on, I'm not finding the source as well. I'll admit to losing the forest in the trees on this one, having heard the revamps enough to become familiar with it over the source, if that makes sense. Sorry, gotta switch to a NO (resubmit)
