OCR02430 - *YES* Mega Man X6 & X5 'Countdown to Infinity'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
So...Infinity source is awesome. Spiral, slightly less awesome, but still awesome. I am pretty glad that these two awesome sources are equaling a pretty awesome arrangement. Love that you kept this in the style of The Final Countdown. 80's rock might be the best and only way to go with this. Both sources are well-combined and well-personalized. I dig the arrangement overall. Drumwork is also fantastic. My only gripe is the fade-out ending. I understand the TFC reference(after being reminded by Bahamut and Emunator, thanks, dudes), but it still felt like it could have been a stronger melodic section to fade out on. Not a big factor in the overall. Hiss at 2:21, but I talked with you today, and you will (hopefully soon) get a fixed version of it. In fact: [22:22] <Deia> i know what it is about the ending, its that its like someone is like 'dude, he's been soloing for a half an hour, just start dimming the lights and maybe he'll stop' [22:23] <WillRock> hahahahaha [22:23] <Deia> this will go into my vote btw Will wait for updated version before I give an official vote. -
OCR02253 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'The Last Schala Mix Ever'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Alright, gave this one another hard listen, and I can hear a little more of the influences that are being used. Still not totally crazy that the source is kinda back burner, at times it feels more 'inspired by' than a mix, but I will agree that there is enough source in there for me to change my vote. YES -
There are definitely a lot of improvements going on here, but I think in some cases the improvements went a little too far. The countermelody actually needs to be a tad louder now, and the reverb is a little bit much, but is alright as is. Hearing this cleaned up has brought to light that the arrangement overall is a bit sparse overall, and repetitious, and I'm disappointed in myself for not noticing it the first time I judged it. I think you could do more to expand on the source theme here. I will mention that the very end (2:27) with the changed bass line is actually a great start, and I would like to hear more of that sort of expansion overall. The drum sequencing could use a little more spice as well. There is a lot of improvement from the first sub, but it needs some more work. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Mega Man Battle Network 4 'Full Synchro'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the sources you've picked here, they definitely have potential. Right now you have a pretty high energy mix that has some nice spots. The transitions between sections are all pretty good, but overall I felt like the track was pretty repetitious. I think you could cut maybe up to a third of the repeating sections out which would condense the mix and give it a bit of an energy boost overall. The track overall is pretty loud, although it isn't really over-compressed or anything. Along with that the lead synth isn't quite piercing, but it cuts through the soundscape a lot more than any of the other synths and doesn't mesh as well as it could. The drums are lacking energy in both sequencing, and the kick could cut through a little more. I think you've got a good start, and the arrangement is pretty much there, but it needs some trimming and production fixes. NO (resubmit) -
If I didn't listen to the sources beforehand, I would not know that there were different sources in here. They are melded together very well, and overall the arrangement is really nice and personalized. Pads might be a touch loud as Andrew mentioned, but I personally didn't have much of an issue with them. Overall the soundscape is very nice, and I liked the subtle use of dynamics and rubato. Kinda want to take a nap now, YES

*NO* Final Fantasy 10 'To the End'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah, the over-compression is really hurting this. Aside from that, the arrangement does get a little away from the source at times, but I think it returns often enough to keep the source in mind. Bringing the source to 4/4 works pretty well overall. Fix this up, I'd like to hear it again. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Cliffs of Hyrule'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
There are some really fantastic arrangement ideas here, which is why I felt this had to be paneled. However, there are a few transitions that aren't really cutting it right now for me. Transitions are super important for a medley, and really are what pull the track together, or apart. The transitions aren't bad by any means, but they definitely strikes me as a 'medley' transitions, making each section feel separate, rather than an overall piece. I liked the marching style percussion, and thought those were some of the highlights of the track. Overall the sounds aren't really great, the bells, brass and some of the percussion stuck out as worse than others in terms of quality. I'm not as turned off by the sounds as other judges might be, but overall an upgrade would definitely bring some life into this. I'd personally love for you to either revisit this and fix the transitions and production, but I could just as easily see you taking each theme and expanding on the arrangement you already have. There's a lot of promise here. NO (please resubmit) -
*NO* Super Mario World 'Spikes & Lava'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty neat idea to make this into a club track, and there are times when overall the soundscape is pretty cool. I think the track suffers from staying too close to the original, both in the sounds used and in terms of arrangement. I think there's plenty of opportunities to expand here. I agree with Andrew that there are times where the soundscape feels empty, and those sections could be filled in better. The drumwork overall can get a bit repetitious as well, and could use more variation and/or fills. Overall I felt that the arrangement on this sticks too close to the original, and there are some other issues holding it back. NO -
There's some cool arrangement ideas here, but overall I think this one falls a little short. A lot of the track feels basic in terms of arrangement. You found some ideas the work well, but they get used for what feels like too long, and get run to the ground. Along with that the leads repeat without much change in them, making the overall track feel repetitive. You've got a start here for the arrangement, but you need to do more with it, lead and background alike. The ending is a bit abrupt as well, consider looking at that. The sounds overall are also very similar throughout and are very vanilla, which doesn't help the repetitive feel. I think a lot of the sounds could be revamped here. I like some of the arrangement ideas you have here, but it needs work in both production and arrangement. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Suikoden 2 'To Slay a Butcher'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a pretty obvious direction to take the source, and you've done some nice things with the track. Everything has a pretty 'epic battle' feel to it. There's some pretty decent expansion, although at times the mix feels very close to the source. I think you could take things further and expand on things more, maybe break up the structure from the original more. Along with this, the second half feels a bit like a rehash of the first at times, although it is different. The big issue I'm noticing is the overall sounds are pretty dated. I felt like I was listening to the FF Tactics soundtrack because of the sounds used (but also because of your writing style, which is good!). Right now they are holding this track back from getting some real epicness out of the soundscape. I will defer to the other judges on how you can address this issue, but overall some sound upgrades would help things out here (one example would be the guitar, which sounds very thin compared to some of the other sounds). I'd also cut out the sound effects; I honestly thought you had a bunch of static until I picked up that it's supposed to be rain, and the cheers seem to come out of nowhere and feel out of place. This is a nice direction to take the source, but it needs some work. NO (resubmit) -
Fishy worded better what I was trying to convey. Nice work, dude.

We ALWAYS encourage artists to use the WIP boards for feedback, but if they are submitting, we are considering whether or not it is of a high enough quality that it can either get a YES or has potential to get a YES. In the latter case we are giving feedback on what yet needs to be done to do so.

*NO* Metroid 'Bounty Hunter from Outer Space'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Some cool things going on here, I like some of the chord progression changes you've made. Overall the song has a gritty feel, and there is some personalizations on the melody that are nice. The arrangement itself, while not repetitious, feels very similar in the second half to the first half. For example, using the same quote, in the same way at that, makes the track feel like it's repeating. It would be nice to have something that really sets it apart from the first part. The drum sequencing is done nicely at times, and at others feels a little too auto-pilot. There can definitely be more variation at times. I'd also look at the background synth; it's got a slow attack that isn't bad, but could be tighter. The rhythm guitars also feel a little muddy overall. I like where this is going, but it needs some production fix-ups, and maybe a look at the arrangement as well. NO (resubmit) -
Whether or not there are more or less to judge in the queue, there's going to be the same amount that has to be judged overall. It's just more visible to the public now, but it shouldn't change how things are judged.
-
Yeah, there's a small group that does the 'first wave' of judging, either moving stuff to the panel, instantly rejecting, or gawking over the OMGAmazing tracks. As Fishy said, there are things moved to the panel that will be clear "NO"s, but they are moved for the purpose of giving some extra feedback because there is potential in them. As for the amount on the queue, as Andrew mentioned, we've worked hard on closing the gap of the inbox so that things can arrive to the panel in a faster period of time. The next step is to move things out of the panel faster, and we are taking steps to get there as well. It's going to take time...to reduce the time...if that makes sense.

I can definitely agree that the arrangement sounds very cohesive overall, and I have no qualms with it overall. Production is in definite need of some work. The clipping in the beginning is very noticeable, and the overall compression needs to be toned down a tad. Please fix this up! NO (resubmit)
-
I will definitely agree that this is short. I wish you had taken this further and expanded more on the theme. The solo is excellent, and overall the style change works very well. I will agree with Andrew that the drums could use just a little more to them, but they are decent as is. It's close, but it needs that extra nudge. NO (resubmit)

OCR02660 - *YES* Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) 'Permafrost'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
So, while this is a somewhat standard technoz™, I do have to say that this is well produced. It's a fun listen, and it's taking a repetitive track in the first place and mixing it up. The source fits very nicely in this style, so smart move there. I enjoyed listening, and while it's not breaking new grounds, not every track has to. YES -
Not something I'd have pictured coming from Brandon, but overall things are nicely orchestrated. Love the low brass bringing the heat. There is also some nice detail on the different articulations, which are a nice touch. Overall everything is arranged pretty well, although things feel a little mechanical at times. Overall I feel like the piece is missing a real climax, and towards the middle-end it get's a tad stagnant. Aside from that I do have to say I'm impressed and enjoying this piece. YES

I would like to submit a song to OCR. Some submission infos: ReMixer name: hoha Real name: Moha Haekal Email: haekal67@gmail.com OCR id: 29148 Song title: Birmingham Beatdown Game arranged: Super Dodge Ball Song arranged: Team England's Theme Original song link: Some notes: This song was arranged for the "Super Dodge Ball: Around The World" album project (directors: Murmeli Walan, KyleJCrb) Own comments: Well, this is my 1st submission to OCR. To arrange a Team England song, obviously i need to get some references from the country. When i think about British, the things that immediately came to my mind were Hammond organ. Deep Purple. Tower Bells. And so, i incorporated some of these elements into the original Team England song and this is the end result. --------------------------------

Remixer Name: TheGuitahHeroe Game name: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Red Rescue Team Name of Remix: "Dreams of Heroism" Songs remixed: "Mt. Blaze," "Questionnaire," "Run Away," "Sky Tower," "Sky Tower Summit," "World Calamity," and "Title" Hello once again, OCRemix judges! You guys sick of me yet? Alright, for this edition I have a solo piano medley piece remixing seven different themes from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It was actually made for a medley contest on a small remixer's/musician's forum (Pokemon Zone Forums, if anybody cares). Anyway, this was originally supposed to be a remix just for "Mt. Blaze." But as I progressed into the creation of the track I ran out of ideas for it. . . and so I brought in a new source. And then eventually another. And another. Until I had seven total. (It wasn't until I was about halfway done with the song that I found out about the medley contest.) The creation of this was very heavily inspired by McVaffe's "Cutman Sonata," and also Willrock's Sonic 2 Ending remix, "Above the Sky." I'd like to thank them both for the inspiration. ;D Oh, I almost forgot to mention that this is sequenced. I used FL Studio 9 and a WST Stein piano SF2. Here's the source breakdown, along with links to the sources on Youtube. (If any of the videos happen to be deleted before you guys judge this, other videos with the sources are easily found as well): :00 - :10 = "Mt. Blaze" intro :18 - :56 = "Mt. ReMixer Name: Boximus Real Name: Jacob Johnson Contact: JacobJohnsonBass@gmail.com Title: Miles Hyrule Game: Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past Song: Overworld Comments: This remix (my first, as a matter of fact) came about while just playing about with some samples. I had been listening to a lot of Miles Davis, and after looking over the site wondering what I should do, I realized there weren't very many jazz arrangements about. While Legend of Zelda remixes are rather abundant, I thought a cool jazz version would be an interesting take on the memorable theme. There's something to be said about doing more with less, and I think that was definitely a signature of Miles' playing. I had an awful lot of fun with this, especially with the trumpet itself, and I hope others enjoy it as much as I do. ----------------------

I'm really proud of this mix. Looking back, my last few submissions probably weren't my best work, but this one was done a lot better. Sonic Spinball has a killer soundtrack and I always loved the intense, industrial feel of this track. ---------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6apIXTeqO0U

Remixer Name: Lashmush Real Name: Rasmus Sorber Email: rasmussorber@gmail.com Website: lashmush.newgrounds.com User ID: 27698 Game: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Song remixed: Shadow Battles (aka Final Battle) Comments Okidoki, after reading your feedback on the previous version, I totally didn't cry or anything, but understood what you were saying and after listening once more I noticed that what you we're talking about was abundantly clear now to me as well. In comparison to my recent works, it was a horribly engineered track. The compression was devastating it so I went back to it and redid the mix and master, this time being a lot more sparing with the compression to enhance clarity and definition in all aspects. I also gave the guitars a redefinition using the tone settings and DSP-chains from my album work. The drums are now tuned and mixed identically to the album as well, so the overall sound should be much better, hopefully. This version should be fully audible and clear in all aspects, but please keep bringing any faults, major or minor things to consider, etc, to my attention. I really need all the help I can get with mixing and mastering. ------------------
