Maybe try converting the file format? My Sansa occasionally skips forward in random spots, and I've always assumed that the player's decoding just doesn't work as well as the software on my computer, so it just skips forward when it runs into an error that it can't figure out.

Games that aren't as good as you remember
Moseph replied to Avatar of Justice's topic in General Discussion
I just replayed, and actually finished for the first time, Secret of Mana. It's certainly not a worse game than I remember, but the experience was just so much different from what I remember from when I was 10. I recall being really into the story back then -- I think it may have been the first RPG that I'd played -- and the story seemed a lot more mundane this time through. I also now have a much greater appreciation for the ingenuity of the combat system, but that comes along with an acute awareness of its flaws. ("No, I don't want any more weapon orbs" and "Hey, spamming combat magic and then replenishing it with the MP drain lets me kill bosses without getting hit!"). I'm now replaying Secret of Evermore, at least in part because I'm interested in how the combat engine was improved for it. It only just now occurred to me that Evermore's alchemy system puts something of a limit on your magic spamming abilities, which directly addresses one of Mana's biggest problems. -
This thread more or less has that purpose: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4556

Native Instruments Komplete - Less than half price
Moseph replied to Skummel Maske's topic in General Discussion
I bought a mic stand from GC a couple months ago, and it seems like they may have subsequently mailed me a catalog or something, so I'll check and see if I've still got it. Can anyone give an opinion on how Battery 3 compares to Toontrack's drumkits? EDIT: Oh, the coupon's online now: http://gc.guitarcenter.com/promo/4th-of-july/ -
Native Instruments Komplete - Less than half price

Where does one get one of these Guitar Center coupons? Do they have them at the stores? -
Actually, the threads on the reviews board are tagged by genre and other characteristics (view a thread and scroll down to just below the last post on the page to see the tags). And before you rush off to check, Zelda Heineken is tagged with "instrumental, winds."

The keys aren't weighted. You can probably do better.
-
As already stated, you want weighted keys (hammer-action, if possible). You might be able to find an 88-key model for $400 if you can get it used; if you're buying new, you'll probably get 76 keys. I got an 88-key Casio CDP-100, which is $400 retail, for $250 on craigslist. Keep in mind that many keyboards don't come with stands; if you need one, that's an extra $30-$100. If it doesn't have internal speakers, you'll need to get externals. My impressions on the CDP-100, if you're interested: I like the action on the keys. They seem a little less stiff than the action on Yamaha pianos (both digital and acoustic) that I've used, which I think is a good thing. The polyphony (number of notes that can sound at a time) is low -- I think between 16 and 24 depending on the sound you use -- but that probably wouldn't be a big issue for you. The internal speakers aren't great, but they beat having to buy separate speakers. And if they were better, they'd be bigger, which would bulk up the keyboard. There's only a heaphone jack, no line-out, so you have to do some jerry-rigging if you want to hook up to speakers that take 1/4" plugs. The acoustic piano sound is decent; the electric piano is quite nice. Totally worth the $250 I paid; probably worth the $400 retail (w/o stand).

No, the issue for me was that it was never mentioned in the thread until an hour (!?) beforehand that people were getting together on the 26th rather than the 27th, and no one gave any other info after that, so I didn't know if people were still here over the weekend, and if they were, where to find them.
-
So are you people still going to be around tomorrow, or should I attempt to track you down today?
-
Why don't you email Brian Owen and ask if he remembers what's in it (assuming he made the mix)?
-
What I don't understand is why people drink this stuff when water restores mana and is free.
-
And listen with a score in front of you, if possible.

How to Mix with a Subwoofer?
Moseph replied to Meteo Xavier's topic in Music Composition & Production
Maybe someone else can give more specific level-setting guidelines, but a good start would be to familiarize yourself with the sound of the speakers by listening to a lot of music of the style you're going to mix. Based on that, set the woofer to a level that seems balanced and appropriate, try doing some mixing, and check the results on different speakers/headphones (especially on your old speakers, since you already know how they sound). -
Works for me.

This thread is now about places in movies that you've been IRL. The Fugitive contains scenes shot in and near my home town, including the trainwreck and one of the hospital scenes.

Usually if you google the program, you can find a description that will tell you what it does and if it's necessary (most aren't). Turning the wrong thing off won't harm anything. At worst, it will just make some program or Windows feature not work right, in which case you just turn it back on.

VG Music Analysis (Come on down! Discuss Theory!!)
Moseph replied to Gario's topic in History & Study of Video Game Music
I usually meter things after I write them. It's becoming increasingly uncommon for me to have more than three or four consecutive measures of the same meter. -
A small drawstring pouch would be ideal.

VG Music Analysis (Come on down! Discuss Theory!!)
Moseph replied to Gario's topic in History & Study of Video Game Music
Gario, your string part's notated two octaves too low; it should be above middle C in alto range. The low harp notes form the bassline, and they're also doubled in the strings -- an octave above in the repeat of the initial eight measures and an octave below in mm. 11-18. -
Although his left-handedness remains consistent, Link somehow manages to keep that sword on his back without a strap across his chest in Ocarina of Time. (He has a strap in the non-gameplay art and in the subsequent games.)
