OCR04315 - Kingdom Hearts "The Slums of Traverse"
Tables replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
omggggg I also remember the original one from the WIP forums or whatnot, what a crazy throwback! the years have truly gone by... but the quality and sublimity of this arrangement remain just as fresh! glad to see it on the big stage ❤️ -
I think my hands down favorite is Mako Reactor from Final Fantasy 7! Maybe not an original choice but it is such a cool atmospheric track! It's been stuck with me since I played the demo as a very young child. I was so happy to hear the new versions in the Remake, including the Battle variant! Also, shout out to Forever Rachel, I haven't played much of FF6 and haven't heard this one in context, but I adore it so much, so beautiful and underrated.

OCR04067 - Final Fantasy IX "Unchain Me"
Tables replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Ahh I love this kind of drum & bass with vocals! I'm not familiar with the game or the source, but this is really great and catchy, and produced so dang well! I think I could show this to folks who don't listen to video game music/remixes regularly and they'd really like it. Also.... just a heads up, in the writeup, both of the links for Earth Kid go to GuitarSVD's youtube page ;-; -
Oh heck yes! I wasn't familiar with this game's soundtrack but I do love me some good AJG <3 still waiting for someone to remix The Smurfs' Nightmare hahaha This remix is really well done! Kind of gives me a vibe of a futuristic-vibed old school adventure, and the vocoder has a really interesting texture that compliments the rest of the smoother stabby synths. Great job!

eval Undertale - La Valse d'Papyrus
Tables replied to NyxTheShield's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I think this is a really lovely little arrangment. Love the integration of both themes Something about changing the timing and tempo brings out something really pretty in the songs I wouldn't have suspected. -
No worries Cash, it's all the same and all lovely! Thank you so much! Yay so between Rexy and Cash I got: Never Alone Grim Fandango Remastered Crypt of the NecroDancer The Beginners Guide I'm really excited to play these! Some of them I've been looking at for a LONG time, or at least it feels that way. Merry Christmas everyone~!

Yeah, rexy got me Steam things too! Because they are just very sweet sweethearts I guess. Aw <3 Thank you so much!

The show and tell is tradition, from what I recall of years past. Lots of fun btw, my person: I won't be at the home address that I provided until the 18th or so when I finish my (last!) college semester, so don't worry if a thing says it shipped and I haven't said anything...!
-
Yay! Glad that those lil guys made it to you safely. They look awesome in that already awesome collection - glad I could add to it
-
Kabam. Ordered my person their thing(s) early so I wouldn't forget. Kinda simple but I think/hope they'll be happy with them

I think I'll try this again. Last year was messy because I was an idiot and also was in between houses, but this year is much more stable. So my address will actually be my address this year. Sorry kitty! I'm sure the thing was awesome <3

I like this quite a bit. Even the lower-than-average recording quality is kind of endearing. Kind of adds to the feel of it. My biggest complaint is that it fades out so quickly, when it feels like there's at least another minute worth of things to say. You know what they say about these things though, better wanting more then having too much...

I can do another batch, since I have a long weekend to look forward to. .... where are we anyway with the numbers?
-
I have such a soft spot for this song. Nothing like a false sense of security before being thrown a ton of bass and drummage unexpectedly a minute into the song. Plus the source tune really lends itself well to this building up and breaking down, having all sorts of madness occur around the fringes of an otherwise simple melody. I think those are some of my favorite kinds of songs generally.... maybe this is not a super ambitious remix but I enjoy the heck out of it anyway.

OCR00100 - Bionic Commando (NES) "ASSAULT"
Tables replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah... too bad Bionic Commando STILL never got that sequel it rightfully deserved ;_; I'm gonna have to go with general consensus on this one... This is one of the higher frequency djp remixes that I don't really get behind too much, unfortunately. Even though the quality of the arrangement itself is really solid as usual, and there are cool things happening with the synths and machine gun drums, the levels of the synths and drams combined are just a little much sometimes. Still I'll always say there's something nice about how even though there's a 'djpretzel sound' there's also so much variation between his songs. -
Not sure if the intro and the rest of the song actually make sense together... but I'll take it. It IS a pretty neat transition, even with the missing beats (which I hardly noticed until they were pointed out to me but, sometimes I'm awfully flighty when it comes to that stuff). But then: yeah it just ends. I'm not sure if this is actually finished to be honest, it's really too bad, I was looking forward to seeing where they'd take it... t'is the curse of a lot of these old AmIEviL tracks, it seems.

OCR00096 - ActRaiser "Lord PROTEKTOR"
Tables replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a very odd little remix but I do think I'm a fan! There's something weirdly satisfying about those chopped up voice samples and turntable scratches backing up an otherwise standard funky synth tune. Also interesting how it starts sounding like electric guitar at points. I also appreciate that the hip-hop is distributed at key points throughout, usually in a song like this it would run acrosst the whole thing. But having it primarily be in choruses is a pretty good choice; it makes it even more special when it shows up. -
OCR00095 - Final Fantasy VII "Costa del Sol DANCE"
Tables replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Dance? Nah, I feel like I'm in the Dead Rising mall again. Or an elevator. Is elevator house a genre? This is super basic, from the beat to the handling of the source material, but that's sort of okay. Like the elevator muzak it kind of sounds like, it's inoffensive and has a neat little groove. The percussion is a little bit heavy on those claps sometimes, but the piano sounds nice even if it's very repetitive. Because of how not much happens, I'd say that the song could be half of its length. And it almost is... the last two minutes seem a little unnecessary, although having all the elements of the song together makes them simultaneously the stronger half. It's odd like that. -
Dangit Chedder. I liked the other CheDDer quite a bit more, a lot due to how you could hear it without going deaf from the clapping. Even the clappiest parts of CheDDer (Wizards & Warriors) wasn't as overwhelming as parts of this song. Then even when the claps are dropped, the last half seems to be a aimless wandering through the museum of techno drumloops, appearing to have lost its chaperone source material very early on. See you, space Chedder. If this was an attempt at being experimental... it comes across as 'not experimental', sadly. Oh well.

OCR00093 - Wizards & Warriors "CheDDer"
Tables replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Mmmmmhm. This is so odd, there's a lot of weird and interesting ideas, like this disproportionately heavy intro that we barely hear any hint of again after the first minute or so. Or the more hip-hop-y drums that start around 2:22, without warning, and without a lead that really makes sense for the part. There's nothing wrong with dramatic style changes, but these just don't seem to happen in a natural way and it's probably more disorienting than intended. It feels like every idea Chedder had during the making of this remix is on display here, and I wish they either stuck to a few ideas or spent more time making the weirdness mesh better. Right now it's like a very odd medley consisting mostly of the same song. -
What I love about djp is that he's always doing something a little different. Even among his 'old quirky funk-o-tronic weird synth' tracks, this has a very distinct feel between the lo-fi intro, the interesting percussion throughout, and the pluckier choices of synths. This kind of makes me miss this kind of sound, I can't imagine a 03000 era OCR track sounding anything like this... maybe going through these old songs is just making me nostalgic for them somehow. Or at least making me appreciate them more, which is pretty neat. (also hehe that... female vox? sound that first shows up around 1:10 reminds me unbelievably of Kirby 64...)

OCR00089 - Phantasy Star IV "Millennial"
Tables replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was expecting something totally different and spacier with that intro... but it's djp of course its gonna get electro-fuzzy and funky! and that's fine too. I really like the buildup, how it kept building up even after the opening soundscape. The big 'release' at 1:23 probably isn't as big as intended, but I like the intent behind the arrangement a lot. Oh and now the elements of the beginning are interweaving into the groove! Some of this clashes a little, but the majority sounds really neat! I love love the mood of this song, the spooky dark mysterious with some bittersweet chimes to light the way, but for how long? I also wish this didn't just kind of bounce away at the end as soon as it could, although this IS one of the better 'old OCR' endings so far :v -
OCR00088 - Chrono Trigger "The New Zeal"
Tables replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Goodness, is The New Zeal the first Zeal (remix on this site)? That's so cute. Oh yeah, I remember this popping up on my shuffled playlists. I've always been fond of it. It sounds like a song half its age, even with this goofy choir effect. Although thinking about it the little voice bits remind me a little of Smooth McGroove? How silly. Anywho this is a solidly made song with more than enough personal touches and quirks to keep it well above the cover line, even if it is relatively conservative. A warm pleasing delight. .... aw, I wonder what Chris J Hampton'a songs would sound like if he kept posting mixes. They'd probably be top-notch with time. ... haha, time. -
Aw, nobody? Oh wait I think I know why I think this accomplishes its goals beautifully right from the get-go. Really nice samples and arrangement, great production especially for this early in OCR's history. The bass and organ are highlights but everything really shines... except. That transition point at 2:22 is sort of awkward, and even the part that follows is great on its own terms (I love virt Ska - see also his Balloon Fight remix) I think that the section doesn't fit well with the rest. I think virt wanted to fit both of the Dr. Mario themes in one song, but I think it would have sounded better if he took his ideas for Fever at the end of this song and made a full thing out of it, rather than make it the ending of this Chill remix. Oh well! Glad to see some of Jake's stuff on the site!
