  1. CMC: Conceptual Music Competition This competition is based on the rules of the classic TOMC (Thematic Original Music Competition). The CMC (Conceptual Music Competition) is designed so that each participant enters a piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is. Feel free to be imaginative! Each successive theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous competition. For example, say the theme of the last competition, CMC 39, was "Faceplant" and the winner, Nicole, submitted a piece that knocked the socks off of everyone, so she won. Nicole then gets to decide the theme for CMC 40. This competition is open to registered members of the forums of OverClocked ReMix, VGMix, VGMusic, Gaming World, Young Composers, and GameDev. CMC 32: Odysseus & the Sirens "'A curse and a hindrance is the open sea, a curse and a hindrance is the wind! I long to venture where there's no return, for a place of such seduction - is one I shall not light-mindedly leave! Oh blasted bonds and a prison of air, oh forbidden love of terrible beauty... I pledge to follow you to the edges of sanity, and unto the breaking of the world.' In Greek legend, Odysseus had his crew tie him to the mast so that he'd be able to hear the tempting song of the Sirens, and not be able to follow it. For this round, you'll have to compose both the song of the Sirens - that is so beautiful no man can resist it - and the termoil and rage inside Odysseus. The two themes must play at the same time at least once during the piece." -Omri Lahav Results!: Text results and critiques There are 2 entries for this round... Rich Douglas - "Waltz of the Sirens" "For the purpose of this piece I opted to utilize a live violin (playing an ethnic sounding jig) which represents the crew as a whole. I felt that an ethnic stringed instrument called a Santoor and some african percussion really captured the Greek vibe of the story as a whole.... so I started there and ran with it backing it all with a lush orchestra and choir. The first minute of the piece follows the crew as they rally to tie Odysseus to the mast of the ship so that he may not give into the power of the sirens song. Right around :59, the theme for the sirens is introduced and is sung by a female soloist backed by a choir. Eventually, a 'turmoil' theme comes in representing the mental anguish that Odysseus is going through thanks to the sirens. As requested, both themes comingle with one another throughout the last part of the cue. While I call the piece a Waltz, it actually isn't as it's in 4/4 time." Lars Dobbertin-King - "Odysseus, Lord of the Sea" "I love the epic narrative of Homer. I wanted to convey a sense of epicness in the piece, so I opted for dark electronic instruments, high strings and heavy bass. The piece is in 4 distinct parts. First, the turmoil and rage of Odysseus. Second, the pressure on Odysseus as he effects his plan. Third, the song of the Sirens. Fourth, the sweetest sound of all - Odysseus escapes the Sirens and sails off into the sunset victorious." Voting Rules!: Voters will be allowed to pick one first place (3 points) and any number of honorary mentions (1 point). Only one set of votes from any one voter will be accepted and a person cannot vote for any one piece more than once. Corrections to votes, from the original voter only, will be accepted, but corrections will void the previous votes. Basically, a voter can vote and correct the vote, but only the final form of that vote will be counted. Send all votes to Abadoss by PM. Please include any and all constructive critiques (not to be confused with bashing) about them with your votes as well, so that there's always a sense of growth in the artform. If you wish to remain anonymous, just state so in your PM. To be eligible to vote, you must be a registered member of at least one of the participating forums, prior to the beginning of the voting period. In your PM or e-mail, please indicate which forum you are a member of and your username. The voting period will last from the moment the entries are posted in the thread to the Saturday of that week. The voting period for this round ends February 20, so be sure to spend some time really listening to the pieces. Any participant in the competition can vote, but not for their own pieces. However, in an effort to encourage voting among participants, any participant who votes will have 2 points added to his/her voting score (unless the participant chooses to be anonymous). Official Rules!: Each piece must be originally composed for this competition. Arrangements and remixes will not be accepted. (Pieces composed by the participant prior to the competition will not be accepted.) Each piece must be 2:00 or longer and match the competition theme. Only one entry per person. Collaborations will be allowed, but each collaborator may not submit any other pieces. (This also means that a person cannot collaborate on two or more different pieces at the same time.) A link to the entry piece must be e-mailed or PMed to Abadoss prior to the deadline set for each competition. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD! However, feel free to post in the WIP:Other forum. Important: Each file must be labeled accordingly: Composer_Name_-_Composition_Title_CMC#.mp3 (For example, if Jennifer Tesla submits a piece called "Up on the Down" to CMC 34, then her filename would be: Jennifer_Tesla_-_Up_on_the_Down_CMC34.mp3) MP3 file format is required. Know that even OGG will need to be converted into MP3. (If someone is unable to do so themselves, Abadoss would be willing and able to do it for them.) Entries should be accompanied by a description and/or story to help listeners understand what the piece is about. (Not required, though.)   6. In regards to that last note, I actually felt the same thing and add an ornamentation to it every time I sing through it on my own. By the time I realized it though, the song had already been recorded and submitted to Avaris.

  13. I'm not yet at home, so I'm not going to be able to make up a WIP just yet, but I guarantee that I will complete Freya. It's one of my favorite VGM tracks ever. It will be done and I will do it. Period.

  17. Well, I'm back at my mom's house until my flight leaves for Portland. I have to say that I had an awesome time at MAGFest. It was totally worth it. I have a list of people I really need to thank.
