So what happened to www.ocremix.org?
djpretzel replied to Gollgagh's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I guess this was more of a "Why not?" thing... the "www" seems superfluous. All links redirect, so nothing's broken linkwise, but I suppose custom skins, etc. might need adjusting. -

Huge threadbump action, I know, but I *finally* saw this yesterday - surprising given that I'm a huge Tarantino fan. My verdict is that... I need to see it again. It certainly didn't hit me like the Kill Bills, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, or even Death Proof did. In spite of a 2+ hour runtime, it actually felt kind of... short. I think a lot of folks are 110% correct in praising the film's suspenseful scenes as highlights - the opening scene and the scene in the bar are classics. Now, the bad: I know this sounds like nitpicking, but I'm VERY attuned to music in films. In Kill Bill, QT made each of the themes he used iconic to THAT film. To turn around and in his VERY NEXT FILM reuse at least two (maybe more) pieces of music... I just felt like I was watching Kill Bill except Brad Pitt was on the screen, hunting Nazis. I'm talking about the whistling, Western theme used on first introduction to the Basterds in the woods (also used in the buried alive, breaking-out-of-coffin scene in Kill Bill) as well as the piece with alternating hits and string falls, almost tango-ish, used in both films as well... forget the specific scene in Basterds, in KB it's Vol. I, in the tea house fight scene. Ironically enough, I remember someone else making a similar critique of KB I think, saying it reused themes from other QT films, or that the reuse of music from other non-QT films was annoying. While it didn't bother me there, it did bother me here... maybe I've just seen the Kill Bills too many times. Landa was an awesome character, very observant, calculating, and not without a sense of humor, sick and twisted though it may have been; given all this, his decision towards the end of the film to "make a deal" (I'll say no more) just seemed overly naive and deus ex machinistic. Finally, let's talk symbolism and subtext: it wasn't very subtle. Much hoo-ha is made of directors, film, and hell, a theater is the final setting and film itself the weapon of choice. It practically deconstructs itself. Stylistically, the narrator device is employed very sparingly... I had this problem with Life is Beautiful, too: in my opinion, you either go with the narrator concept, or you don't, but if you only use it 2-3 times in an entire film, it feels a bit slapdash. Here, I would have dropped it entirely for more Landa screen time or backstory on the British dude, etc. Just a few criticisms... I've got more, but I've also got more praise for the things done well. Like most QT stuff, I'll probably watch it a dozen more times, but the last line of the film, regarding the meta-label of "masterpiece" - I'm gonna say that, for me, PF, RD, and KB are all much better.

Just for clarification: it's become too large to host, but it's not getting consistent traffic... this seems contradictory. By "too large," are you talking the size of the files themselves, bandwidth, or server CPU/memory? Of those three, only the third is usually problematic to shared hosts. DreamHost and others offer tons of space & tons of bandwidth... would they be an option?

Effective immediately, the judges panel has voted to raise the maximum submission size to 8MiB, or 8,388,608 bytes. The max bitrate REMAINS 192Kbps; if you want to visit my house and prove you can pass a blind test differentiating between 192Kbps and 256Kbps, be my guest. If you win, the bitrate will be raised. If you lose, you owe OC ReMix $300 for my time This decision was reached by vote of the judges panel on a thread I posted; our mirrors are handling MP3 bandwidth admirably and, combined with torrents, have proven that this increase should be sustainable, so I posed the question and the judges responded. If you already have a piece queued up you think would benefit from a higher quality encode, please get in touch with a judge, BUT please note that any such changes may delay the evaluation of your track. I'd recommend against it unless it's a 6-7 minute track where the encode really brutalized things. As to the logical follow up question of "OMFG WHY NOT 10MB?! OR EVEN... 100MB!!!?", well, to be honest 6MiB has been serving us quite well for a long time. There are logistics involved at OCR that are fairly unique, and specifically when you factor in the (necessarily) manual evaluation of both arrangement and production PLUS the general deterrence towards mega-medleys, etc., we feel it makes a lot of sense. We are considering going back and soliciting higher quality encodes of mixes ALREADY posted, but have not formalized any plans. Please don't ask to update any existing tracks you may have had posted on the site, as we won't do it - in other words, don't call us, we'll call you. That's it, pretty much. While I'm sure someone can manage to put a negative spin on this by complaining that it took us too long, that it should be raised higher still, or that Larry smells (only one of which is true), I see it as a "good thing" that represents our steady, stable, persistent improvement of the site over time.

Actually, for along while the issue was that our torrent tracker status was really questionable. It's been stable at its new home for awhile now, though, and while I think we need to modify the main listing to accommodate pagination if we're going to add this and a bunch of other torrents, I'm still game for making these available. They really were fantastic.

It's for remixSite, not shawnphase specifically, as previously noted. Never liked cryptic "ARE YOU E"/"BELIEVE" type posts, for this very reason... consider modifying thread title accordingly to clarify...

OCR01427 - EarthBound "Twoson Hits the Road"
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I don't do much on MySpace... I'm not alone, it's sort of on the wane Anyways, please feel free to say what you like. I'm 110% happy with this track and consider it one of my very best, but your mileage will of course vary. I think I get plenty of fair reviews, here; if people are intent on kissing my ass just because I run the site, they could be doing a MUCH better job -
