  1. Well folks, I am pleased to announce...

... that Mazedude will be there this year. Hell yeah.

Last time I made it out to MAG, a few years back, I actually didn't get much of a chance to hang out with the OCR folks, and I'd like to change that. So, screw it, here's my phone #: 315-744-2839. At the event, if there's an OCR party or hangout going on, and I'm not there, shoot me an invite. I do not want to be bored. :)

    Looking forward to it!

Hey, if you are still in Syracuse i'll probably see you on the road going down. You are quite literally within spitting distance of me.

Well Syracuse is an hour away but if there's a good tail wind i'm sure i could make it. :)

  2. I actually like most of Tekken's music from 5 onwards, but I like psytrance music so...That Snoop Dogg track is fucking terrible though.

Thank the big man that they allowed us to switch the tracks out for any stage we wanted to in TTT2. That was the first one to go. I have nothing against hip hop but so far there are no good hip hop songs in any fighting games. That are any fun to play. Obviously Shaq-Fu isn't. :)

DOA5's in particular drives me nuts when playing online and waiting for a match.

    yea well...

    and

  3. I remember I used to do this alot in my pre-remixing phase. Staying up all night and seeing what comes to mind is loads of fun and usually I would end up with something decent to listen to for driving at night.

SPEAKING OF THAT! if you have the time on a weekend or something. After you write something load it up on your mp3 player and go for a midnight drive. It's awesome.

Nice groove. Definitely sounds like it was written with some night time influences.

  4. The way I look at it is this:

If you are an artist of any kind (video games being multiple artistic mediums in interactive form) and you put a lot of effort into your work, you intend for it to be seen in its entirety. When I write a 3 minute song, I have the goal in mind that people will listen to what I've created for its entire duration. If they can't endure those three minutes; I've probably failed.

For me, if I enjoyed a game but did not complete the story in a game where the focus is the story, then I both have and haven't got my money's worth. Sure, I enjoyed the game, but at the same time I did not get the full experience.

It's like Dream Theater writing a 20-30 minute song. Sure, they're impressed with this thing they've created that is packed full of content and months were spent creating, but everyone else says you're just "wanking" and can't get through the whole thing.

Games involve music but games aren't music. We shouldn't be comparing them to other forms of entertainment anyway. If something is so linear that everyone is going to perceive it in the same way, and people can't make it to the end, then chances are it sucked for a good chunk of the people listening to it.

I don't think very highly of Rockstar or the GTA franchise but you have to give them credit for keeping things open and allowing the player to go off of whatever impulses they have at that moment. It's really the only thing that seperates games from other forms of art and it should never be thrown away.

I like being able to use my imagination at times. I don't need everything dictated to me and judging from some of the hate that recent games like ffxiii or call of duty have received i'm not alone.

I probably wouldn't be interested in a 20 minute dream theater song either. Now EQUILIBRIUM on the other hand... they can go all day for all I care. :)

    most days they do.

  5. After reading the article I really don't see what the problem is. This is what games should be about, everyone having their own seperate experiences. We should be glad developers are still putting enough into their games to account for so many different people playing through their game in different ways. Instead of limiting the player to only play the way the developers intended them to.

For a book not making it to the end is bad. Same for Argo, i guess, if anyone saw that. But for games it's fine. Some play for the story, some play for the experience. Comparing games to the other entertainment industries is what got us in trouble in the first place remember?

You pays your money you gets what you want out of it. Which should be a unique experience.

  6. Some free post processors

I love the hell out of all of these in their legacy collection though for what you are looking for I'd go with either the M1 or Wavestation.

    Wavestation demo

    M1 demo

    Hope that helps!

  7. Not really but I have noticed there are a few things that have changed about my attitude towards violence as I get older. When I was a kid I couldn't get enough of Mortal Kombat I & II. If one of my friends knew how to do someone's fatality that I didn't know we'd play and do it over and over again.

I picked up the reboot of the game back in 2011 and was hoping for a similar experience. Seeing the fatalities wasn't quite as awesome as it used to be but the one thing that got to me was the X-ray specials. Something about actually seeing the bones crack in the chest and back got me a little weird-ed out.

  8. I'm still not sure how to create a more full top end for this piece. I didn't really cut the highs on anything but the bass instruments and I thought I boosted a fair bit on some of the higher ones. Is there some trick I'm missing to making things sound brighter?

I wish someone told me this years ago but your initial fader adjustment is the most important part of getting a good mix. I'm just now starting to get the hang of things but you don't want to listen to just the mids of every instrument when setting volumes. Which i think some people do without realizing it as this overpowers the low end and makes things muddy.

If you have a balanced initial fader-ing when mixing all parts should be audible even without any EQ'ing. Once you get that your mix will be even across the spectrum and any Eq'ing you do will be extremely sensitive.

  9. [*]Komo Sanctu et Shadedog Morientia: A lot of the parts are pretty quiet

If you are talking about the relation between the guitars and the synths, I go for complete guitar domination in my metal remixes. Not the kind where the guitar blends a little too well like the track Therex posted earlier in the thread.

Final volume was too quiet. I should have rested my ears before mastering.

...and that choir patch. Was a little too quiet for the break wasn't it?

...and hey. you probably didn't even notice that I had strings buried in there did you? Did anyone?

Yea, some parts were too quiet. :)

  10. :o

Ok... I'll show you how I EQd both acoustic guitar tracks. I don't usually highpass or cut as much body as I did this time, I suppose the recording came out with a bit too much bass for my tastes. You can see how I handled that here:

    bwlBEtu.png

    ...what the heck is that?

    Really?

I know it's an acoustic guitar but that flies in the face of everything i've been learning about guitar processing this year. I'll have to try it.

    ...you boosted 2khz?! REALLY?!!

  11. I'm not too happy with the drums. Those cymbals were especially difficult to work with.

If I remember correctly the stems didn't have a cymbal track and were located only on the overheads. This might be the way most live drums are i honestly have no idea but it did make the cymbals tougher to work with.

Definitely feel similar to Gar in regards to loss of energy in my mix. Especially during the sax solo, I don't know how you were able to make those guitar chords so full and present...

The drums in the original were really compressed. Much more than I guessed the first time around.

As for the guitar chords I don't know if you were talking about mine or brandon's (probably brandon's) but I can tell you what I did with them.

-Hard pan the guitars and send them to a stereo bus with it's own EQ.

-I can't remember the filter settings exactly but I think I HPF'ed around 160-180 with a Q of about 1.0. Also a slight dip around 500hz (more out of habit). Then around 2k-6k I used a shelf to make a wide dip around the vocals. Not a hard dip, only about -5db or a little less but it's a wide one. Then, here is the important part. I brought back 8k+ up to 0. This gives the guitar that "air" that so many people mention. Without it the guitar sounds muffled and lifeless.

...liquid metal 2 stems incoming? :)

  12. I was talking more about the fact that we were missing like 6 tracks this week

I love all of the seventh chords. ALL of them. Even triple diminished half salchow augmented erection seventh chords

    ...what?

Until you guys start talking about flatted 11ths and 13ths meh.

Clearly the petering comment was made before Shadedog part 3: Die Free or Shade Dog was posted.

As there was no petering in my track. :) Or Bstrade's. Or Tuber'z. Or Superior's. Or Ivan's. Or Jakes's. Or Sterling's Or Mindwanderer's. Or... was that it? short round.

  13. I just finished Liquid Metal 2: Even Wetter featuring Rexy and Jivemaster. Shout out to my man Sir_NutS.

Here's the lyrics, featuring many threats of violence against fish, threats to cook them, etc.

Listen for synth or 80s ensemble string lead (also sounds like a synth) for a lot of source usage.

Turns out the lyrics were for real.

    Song is awesome.
