  1. People play or don't play video games for a multitude of reasons that could be completely unrelated to sexist perceptions.

I play to fulfill my male power fantasies. :) 'cuz that's all they are at this point.

If I can't be the good guy once in awhile and save the cute girl by walking to the right and punching everything in my way then I want to at least pretend I can.

  2. Plus repped for puppets and gratuitous shots of a dust free Dreamcast.

Wait, nevermind. Putting the dreamcast to bed just freaked me out. At least you didn't put eyes on the thing.

Pretty good sense of humor though. :)

These are worth a 7 minute watch. It's great to get some non technical views on what makes videogame music enjoyable.

  3. I started watching the first 5 episodes or so, and yeah, there are some really excellent tips and tricks to be learned from this guy. Ya just gotta listen to his shitty music :P It was Christian rock a la Taylor Swift if I remember correctly.

lol yea I wish he would do some different things once in awhile. One of his recent videos has him using his own mix as fodder and he says those god awful Linkin Park esque guitar licks he did were a strength of the mix. I'm not crazy about the amount of nasal singing that are on his videos either but the information is good and that's what matters to me.

  4. Noob question: Does this mixing in Mono talk have anything to do with the "Width" control that (at least) Reaper has next to the Panning?

    Sort of but not really.

I've never used reaper so I can only guess that it's used to get your supporting instruments out of the center. You can do the same thing recording a stereo track and splitting to mono which is how i am doing it.

Forcing everything to the center let's you see how everything stacks and makes it much easier to find something that's clashing or disappearing completely. Some issues you might not be finding in stereo become much more apparent in mono. Plus a quick and easily reversible change in your DAW can be used to combat mix fatigue and give you a better perspective.

  5. If you've ever been to Sonic News Network (where everyone there is both a little crazy and a little too obsessed with Sonic to ever give up on him... to put it simple they just don't want to believe Sonic '06 was a bad game so they say it was pretty good and that I'm just bashing it around no good reason... what a hilarious joke)...

    Sonic's the man!

I only played the demo for 06 and never went further sooooo as far as I know i have no opinion about it... :)

  6. As much as I love Graham I gotta say that today's video couldn't have come at a worse time for me. Just this week, after over a year of doing things my way, I just identified how poorly i've been using my stereo tracks in my mixes and today his tip reinforces what i wish I knew all this time.

Thanks graham but if it came a year earlier I would have been posted by now!! :)

  7. I check for new recording revolution videos pretty regularly but today I nearly deafened my coworkers once I saw that 5 MIN TO A BETTER MIX III just going!!!!!!!!!!!! On the negative side now everyone knows I surf on my phone at work. :( Oh well screw 'em!

A great piece of mixing wisdom everyday for the rest of the month!

  8. Here's another point: one's simply legitimately interested in the story of a game he knows he can't play himself. For example, I don't have ps3, but I heard that God of War 3 has a kickass plot, so I checked a hd let's play of the whole thing. Good game. Epic shit. And would never have gotten a chance to play it myself.

At the end of any console generation everything becomes dirt cheap. I usually pick up a refurbished system and go on a spree for all the games I missed that I really wanted to play. I'm planning on doing the same for the PS3 just as soon as a massive price drop hits. Which better be before Tales of Xillia releases.

No sense in ruining a game for yourself by listening to someone whine the whole way through it :) Just be patient.

  9. Ministry of Rock - the focal point of the library being rock makes this all the more confusing, but the guitars are barely usable. The only good things about this library are the drumkits, but they're not recorded dry, so they can be troublesome to fit into existing productions. The guitars themselves aren't horrible and can be useful in many circumstances where you wouldn't need a lead, but they take some tweaking to sound right and aren't nearly as dynamic as, say, Electri6ity, Orangetree guitars, or even Shreddage 2.

Avoid Ministry of Rock like the plague. A complete miss from Phoenix. A few games have used it though most notably Motoi Sakuraba's work on Tales of Xillia. (something that is bound to prevent my enjoyment of the game when it gets released) Duke Nukem Forever also used it and I think I heard some of the background guitar squeals from Ministry of Rock were used in Soul Calibur V on that one stage. The Blue and Red one. Chaos something i think. Maybe zircon can confirm that.

I've been using it since my first remix i had here on the forums and now that i have gone beyond it I don't know how i ever used it. You can't humanize the rhythm guitars without them souding awful. Only one of the rhythms in the whole pack let's you use your two hands to play it, everything else needs a keyboard split which means you have to run two instances for one instrument. You can't double track or quad track which is a metal necessity nor can you control the panning unless you mono each side by itself. The guitars sound so bad though you won't even get to that point.

The lead guitars would be usable if they weren't so thin. But only if you play everything on a keyboard. If you can't play a lick, programming it is going to sound like hell. The articulations are a big problem too as each guitar has seperate articulation triggers. If you liked the bends the les paul delux has but want to do it on the les paul standard, Tough! You can't do it.

The drums are ok but i've never used them in anything I finished. Steven Slate Drums are what I use most of the time anyway.

  10. I've been told by Prophecy (credit where it is due :D) that you should do level mixing/EQ etc in mono. If it sounds clean in mono, it'll sound amazing in stereo. I tried the method, works like a charm ^_^. So yes, make your mixes mono friendly. Mono friendly = stereo friendlier!

Quoted for truth and that it can't be stated enough. :)

Switching to mono is a tool not a consideration for people who have one speaker.

  11. All those people who shit themselves over Slender would positively die if they had to face the army of jump-scares in Resident Evil 3. That game takes place in jump-scare-city (I love it though).

I loved RE3. I loved Slender. Both games no longer scare the crap out of me as bad as they once did but I had a blast playing them when they were new.

The problem is that the survival horror games of the last 10 years haven't included the horror part of it. Or the survival. Though many indie games have.

  12. A guy I know actually prefers to watch people play video games.

Just recently, he watched some Swedish dude on YouTube play games for seven hours straight. Needless to say, said friend has no life.

Ok, so I enjoyed watching pewdiepie's slender videos over last summer. BUT THAT WAS IT!!! and i haven't watched anything else from that guy or anyone else since.

    Funny accent though.

  13. My biggest problem with Lets play and other gaming videos is the commentary. God these people sound like hell! Pretty much ruins the entire game for me right there.

Until Troy Baker or Yui Horie start doing lets plays i won't be watching them at all. But I will continue to complain about them. :)

"Hi this Omar from MMOhut.com and today we'll be lookaadsjiwndawasdisnwddafiwadwadnsidwniawdniadndasdiasndwnad..."

If you don't believe me. (Edit I'm a Laid back tolerant easy going kinda guy and I couldnt make it past 2:16)
