  7. Why? Why the fuck do you want me to find such a game? We're talking about the good things of CONSOLE games. YES, I KNOW that computer games can be played on a computer, and I also know that some of them can be played with a controller. THANK YOU. I know that. But that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about the advantages of console games. In this discussion, I don't fucking care that SMB has controller support, it's okay, that's fine. But it's a COMPUTER game. This thread is about OUYA and console games, and having a CONSOLE at our disposal. And by us, I mean the indie devs that DREAM of making console games. What I've been trying to say this whole damn time is, if ANY dev who doesn't have the means to publish a game on a "traditional" console wants to make a console game (with a super smash bros. feel or similar mechanics, for example), then HE'S SCREWED without something like OUYA. But with OUYA, he's not. That's all I'm saying. Dammit. (It so happens that this is precisely my case with one of my projects - I've got this fine game in the works that just can't work on a keyboard)
  8. How many times must I say it? It's not about not having controller support, it's about keyboard+mouse support being the MAIN source of input, which is AWKWARD for some games god dammit. Go play super smash bros. (for example) without a controller on an emulator, and you'll understand PERFECTLY what I mean. Okay, seriously, you're clearly not even trying to put a little bit of effort to understand my posts, and you still quote me. Go read my previous posts, because I've already been clear on this point. Geez. Seriously guys, am I crazy? Are console games not different from computer games inherently? Have my whole life been a lie? EDIT: I'll save you the trouble (for the flexible hardware thing):

I don't have much time to play these days, but I played quite a lot of GW1 so I'd be glad to help once in a while Finishing the campaigns with heroes isn't a problem, when you have the right builds.   11. Are you serious? Why are you insisting so much? If you think that consoles are nothing different than computers then fuck, let's start a new thread about that and let's see why the playstations, the xboxes, etc exist. So. I never mentioned anything about games that couldn't be played with keyboard+mouse. Any game that uses a controller CAN technically work on a keyboard, because you know, it's just buttons. That's not the problem. I only talked about games that were much more awkward to play with a keyboard than with a controller. I think Crowbar Man summed it up pretty well. If you really think that games in the style of classic Metroids, Mega Man games, Kirby games, Super Smash Bros. games, all racing games, party games, etc etc would offer the same experience on a PC than on a console, then I think you're just hopeless, imo. Also, Gollgagh. I lol'd.
  12. You don't seem to understand my point. SMB works well on keyboard because it HAS to, but the devs *recommend* playing the game with a controller. On a console, the ONLY way to play the game is with the controller. And the point about the hardware was that it can be a good thing, when making a console game, that consoles have specific hardware. Also, unreal engine = goodbye money. It's still a cool engine though.
  13. I was talking about consoles in general, because the argument had slightly drifted to "are consoles different than computers". I am well aware that most indie devs don't have the means to make games that push recent computers to their limits. That is my main point.
  14. It's not that it's not good enough. A console is a console because it does only one thing: play video games with a specific controller. Consequently, developing for computers is a very different task, because you have to create a game with flexible hardware, and most importantly flexible sources of input. If the main input is supposed to be a mouse and a keyboard, then some types of games are at a big disadvantage, because they are great to play with a controller, and awkward with mouse+keyboard. The problem, in this case, is that a computer game HAS to be functional with mouse+keyboard, and MAY be playable with a controller. I think denying this would be frankly stupid. On a console, your game can only possibly be played with a specific source of input (which is the console's controller) and the general specs of the hardware are not flexible (which is the case for a console). The games you make don't have to adapt to the hardware's capacity (which I think is just convenient for optimizing the game), neither do they have to adapt to the source of input. It's a controller, and that's it. I think that's the main reason some games are meant to be played on a console and some are meant to be played on a computer. I don't think it's a matter of "my computer can do just fine as a console, just plug it in the TV and get a controller". Devs can't make a computer game and say "this game is meant to be played like a console game, so you have to get a controller to play it".

Personally I decided to leave this stupid conversation because you're just dead certain the project is bound to failure even though everyone lacks tons of information to back what they're saying. Nobody in this thread can be 100% sure of the outcome of this project. You guys are stuck in an infinite loop of "dude I KNOW this won't work" and "dude I KNOW this can work". I'm really tired of this thread going nowhere interesting. Btw, I used fictional numbers based on real data just to illustrate that a port can be easily a good time investment. Get over it. There's a big difference between using real numbers to build estimates and just saying "yeah this is what I think so it's right".
  17. I agree with you that this notion is ridiculous and that this isn't guaranteed to succeed. What I'm saying though is that there is no reason to believe that this project *can't* succeed.

  20. You seem to be missing my point completely. Oh well. First of all, your sig goes both ways and doesn't prove anything. I know pretty well that pessimism and realism are two different concepts, but expecting the worst is NOT always realistic. Secondly, there was nothing to be fixed. There ARE reasons to believe the project will succeed. There is a team. There is organisation. There is equipment. There are prototypes. There are deadlines. There is vision, a mission, and clear objectives. There is a lot of support. There are 9 million unexpected dollars that were added to their budget. These are, I think, the most important reasons to believe the project CAN work. I'm not saying it will, I'm saying it CAN. I have yet to see a single counter-argument to that fact that isn't based on speculations. Why are you speculating that a port can generate just "A few dollars"? Where are your numbers? Have you even looked at real revenues generated by different game ports on various devices? "A few dollars" in this case can range from 0 to potentially any number. Let's say your game costs 3$, let's say you keep ~70% of it, and you sell 1,000 copies. That's 2.1k$ straight in the dev's pockets. If you sell 10,000, that's 21k$. I think the time for porting (in this case, let's say a week's worth of work) is very well invested. Fun fact: in my case, porting the game I'm currently making would probably take no more than a single day. I know these numbers are fictional, but they seem pretty realistic to me.
  21. Guys, I don't really understand how any of you can predict if this console will be popular or not. How can we know how many devs will support this project? How can we know how many people will be buying the console if it comes out? How can we know how well the free version/paid version system will pay out in the end (I'm talking about the concrete revenues for the OUYA team AND the devs)? I'm pretty sure nobody in this thread who has affirmed anything about these questions (e.g.: "This console is only good for a small niche of people" or "This system just won't make any money") has backed his opinions with relevant facts and/or statistics. Is it really just for a niche of people, or is it just your feeling? A product like this is new. It's a variant of console gaming that may or may not work out in the end. That's all. If some of you think this product is doomed to failure, I think you're just plain pessimistic. There is absolutely NO reason to believe this project will fail. Yeah, I know that "9 million dollars are not enough to fund such a project", but how do you guys know if they only have that money? Who told you that? They said they wouldn't get other backing than kickstarter during their kickstarter. Maybe they had enough funds for the whole thing already and they just decided to hit kickstarter for marketing reasons. Maybe not. We can't know, so please stop thinking this project is bound to failure.
