I guess I wasn't clear enough about this being an RPG character compo.

You were perfectly clear enough. In my case, I had an overly-broad definition of RPG. Just because something has a few RPG elements doesn't mean it is an RPG and I did not really realize that before. Thanks for your patience.

Here's my new list. I'm going Hero now.

    1. [“Chrono Trigger” - “Ayla” and “Ayla's Theme” - “Hero”]
    2. [“Chrono Trigger” - “Robo” and “Robo's Theme” - “Hero”]
    3. [“Chrono Trigger” - “Lucca” and “Lucca's Theme” - “Hero”]
  2. *throws hat into the ring / arena / whatever the hell you want to call it*

It's been a while since my last competition. I still feel like I have a long way to go with my music skills and I honestly won't be surprised if I get eliminated in the first round BUT I still want to give it a shot.

EDIT : Apparently I have a tendency to lump any game with even a few RPG elements into the RPG genre. I appreciate FenixDown's patience. My current first choice is Ayla's theme but I'm planning on making a new list of just hero characters.

  3. I took a website design class in high school. We were required to make an email for the class. In my inifinite 16 year old wisdom, my thought process went something like this: "Hmm...I like pasta...I really like alfredo...hmm...alfredofreak!". Probably spent about five minutes total on the name, but I lucked out with how unique it is.

That being said, I certainly wish my real name (NIcholas Day) was unique enough that I could just use it.

  4. I don't know much about your setup, but I originally had some issues using Asio4All and not being able to output the sound to OBS. As a workaround, I enabled my integrated soundcard and simply plugged the output from my PCI audio card to the mic input of my integrated card and used that input. Not very elegant a solution, but it got the job done.

Thank you Nutritious! I've been wondering how to stream with ASIO.

I've recently started streaming as well: twitch.tv/alfredofreak/

Only a little bit of gaming so far, but I'm also planning on streaming remix production (particularly for OCR remix comps), sound design, original music, and maybe mashups (although they tend to get muted). I'm planning on coming up with a semi-regular streaming schedule sometime in the next few weeks. (Semester is wrapping up)

My connection is horrendous for now (about 850 kbps up), but my streams are fairly stable. I do plan on upgrading to a sane connection capable of handling HD sometime in the next few months.

  5. 2. Inhouse 'audio designer', sound designer, composer (rare). In a job like this, you will likely be involved in much more than just creating assets. You may be doing editing, optimization, looping, and other things to make sure the assets work right with the game. It's possible you'll be involved with some code as well; more than likely, you will be using some kind of "middleware" like FMOD or Wwise. These are basically software packages that handle audio for a game, allowing you to make many changes and edits without going into the code.

Both FMOD and Wwise have versions available to download for free if you want to start heading down that route. The School of Video Game Audio (run by Leonard J. Paul, aka FreakyDNA on the Retro City Rampage soundtrack) has two-month classes running year-round that consist almost entirely of you making a demo reel using one of those programs. You basically get instant sound design portfolio material.

  6. Interesting article from Curbed LA: http://la.curbed.com/archives/2014/03/inside_the_underground_world_of_las_home_recording_studios.php

Is zoning is only an issue if you have a commercial studio then? What exactly constitutes a commercial studio? Are you in the clear if you just have a one-man production based out of your house? Are there issues if you have a buddy come over and collaborate on an album you're both going to make money from? This is something my inexperienced self has honestly never heard about before.
