I began having a lot more fun with Melee when I started taking it seriously and playing at a competitive level. Hell, the Ice Climbers are nigh unplayable (in terms of actually being enjoyable enough to play) without wavedashing. As for items, how is losing because of a more random element fun? It's frustrating, if anything. Even when I win (in tournaments, at least -- I'd often play casual matches with my roommates with some items on) because of items, I feel like it's less satisfying. Who wants to get knocked out of a tournament because a Smash Ball happened to appear while they were off the stage?

G-T's still a bit sore from losing in the first round of the UnMod tournament to a green shell.

Nobody can use Yoshi. He's unplayable.

I am above Atma and I haven't played Drack since day one, on which I beat him a couple of times IIRC.

I'll play anyone who manages to get past Ayres, Atma, and G-T, since I can beat them regularly.

B-sticking really isn't something you have to learn how to do. You just map your specials to the C-stick, then push it in the opposite direction you're moving when you jump. As for using it effectively, that's another matter. For me, even as a Lucas main, it's not worth giving up my C-stick aerials. As for being a glitch, I dunno. You can pull off something like a wavebounce without B-sticking by jamming the control stick to the opposite direction you're facing before you do a PK Fire, but it takes careful timing. I was actually doing this before they discovered B-sticking, and if you time it right, you can get almost the same distance.

Link reminds me of Young Link, so I like him. Toon Link is too damn floaty. I can't use him.

Heh, I like people choosing characters before they've played the game. I've decided that I'm going to play as ZSS first, but it will take well over a month of playing before I legitimately have a "main."

I played Melee competitively, though I don't know that I'll have the same kind of time to devote to Brawl (especially since, unlike when I played Melee, I'm not longer in undergrad, so I don't have the same base of people to play against), or if I'll even be any good at it, as I haven't even played it yet, but on the off chance that I do and I am, I'd just like to reserve N03.

But it does add a factor of randomness that you want to avoid in a tournament. Not to mention that people talk about "items on" or "items off," but there are far more settings than that. When I play with friends (in Melee...I haven't played Brawl yet), I typically play with items on very low and about half of them turned off. Pretty much everyone I've ever known, no matter what level they play at, turns off starman, heart container, and maxim tomato. I also usually have hammer, the mushrooms, cloaking device, and some other items off. I'll change it up every few months. I'll even turn items off completely for a while. This has to do with how I enjoy playing the game, not with an obsession with fairness. I can beat the shit out of my friends regardless of settings. Same goes for stages. I turn about half of 'em off and do random every time (or occasionally just select Final Destination). I've never played anyone who leaves Icicle Mountain on random select. Even though I usually play with some items on and on a variety of stages, "items off, Final Destination" is still a fun way to play the game. Randomness does not always equal fun.

I preordered it months ago. It's similar, but with less awful.

He complained about the game because he was interested in it and had high hopes about it. I doubt he would spend that much time talking about a game that wasn't even out yet unless he were somewhat obsessive about it, like many of us. Bingo. It's the only stage I haven't seen yet. EDIT: Urk, just found it.

If anyone has come across a retro DK stage video, I'd appreciate a link.

In Melee, Mr. Game & Watch was usually banned from tournaments because he's too flat, while Mewtwo was banned because he's legendary. Mr. Game & Watch is still banned in Brawl, but Lucario is allowed. People are talking about Luigi being banned for his game-breaking taunts and Samus for her R-select ZSS glitch. Overall, I'd say you should probably main R.O.B. He seems like he'll be top tier with his Nintendo-saves and Cyclops-cancels.
