  1. you know I can never tell when there's a competition or not, I've always wanted to submit something >_<
  2. I'm having that problem with drums actually. If I don't start with bass, I end up having a lower pitched instrument playing part of the melody's progression in a different order or something, not my ideal but it kinda works lol
  3. Reminds me of the royalties society that has teamed up with youtube in order to track down "infringements" in music, a lot of people have gotten their vids removed for no reason... and yet >_>
  4. Don't get me started on KY, he plagiarizes even recently . He actually composes for the DB anime in japan and yeah... every track he's made is plagiarized literally. Though with regards to the budokai games, tower of power and Slash and some other noted musicians contributed to the budokai soundtrack so they probably know he plagiarized some of their songs for these games, or let him I guess. My friend told me the Kenji Yamamoto who composes for metroid has different kanji in his name, so I'm assuming it's a different artist all together. The stuff form metroid sounds legit.
  5. I believe that is a fan name given to the track, the actual track was un-named. It's the song that plays when your party encounters Pokey before fighting Giygas btw, this is honestly the best remix I've heard of the song:
  6. do you need to mix drums and percussion? I mean idk if it's just the samples I'm using but hey sound fine the way they are, I just wish that the orchestral percussion I had had more samples, the only thing I can use are the snares a symbol and a bass drum. But I mean unless I wanted to do something like , or anything else... lol that sheet thin snare sounds really cool.
  7. Timing is definitely an issue I am playing these parts by hand, I'm still learning to quantize and I don't record drum parts first so that makes it a lot worst. And in all honesty that is the case, I have no idea what to do when it comes to mixing and percussion. Especially percussion, the snare on every beat seems detracting so I'm looking for a tomtom or something that can play at least the 1st beat then maybe a snare on the last 2, it's something I observed listening to other orchestral vg music I think. If only the tomtoms in my sample pack were better >_< Yeah my mixes tend to be muddy, but I don't particularly know which dynamics to emphasize or what instruments need to be mixed/stand out.
  8. I've been avoiding writing percussion parts in most of my songs and I suppose it's worked out ok because the type of music I write doesn't per se require it. But now I wanna try. I attempted to add percussion to it but it seemed all erroneous without percussion: with percussion: For orchestral percussion are there any particular rules or styles to follow (or are there basic lessons online somewhere)? I listened to a few orchestral battle songs (kinda what I was going for with the above), and they didn't seem to have snares running throughout the entire song, what other type of drums could be used here? Also does anyone know where I can get a good orchestral percussion vst, NI's seems kind of limited. On a partially related note, would a song like this really need percussion or be better with it?:
  9. I started out composing officially about maybe a year ago, and for the most part I've just been playing around, using a plug and play daw (mixcraft) and just been focusing on making songs, but now I'm somewhat interested in perfecting and mastering songs. How do I get the best out of my vsts. I'm for the most part using NI samples and such so I should possibly get a good sound if mixed properly right? A lot of mixes sound kind of muddy and thin I feel. I also realize that I also need to work on the timing of my songs but that's something that I know I can work out. For example, how do I bring out a better sound for the trumpets in these songs (among others): Also how would I go about making my songs sounding fuller, like the one below for example it doesn't really sound that full, I reverbed and thickened the bass but it doesn't sound full and broad. Also, the instruments don't sound that dynamic, I don't know if it's simply the vst I'm working with or if I'm not using them to their full potential:
  10. Does anyone know any good piano vsts? I used pro-tools mini grand and mixed it and didn't really like the result
  11. When you first have an idea for a song, what part do you usually tend to work on first? Do you find working on specific parts before others easier than others? Personally I usually get a melody in my head, sometimes with a bass, but mostly not. What's killing me is that it's sometimes harder to think of rhythm or basslines for that melody, so I get something that will not have any particular form and my timing's off when I record it. Anyways, what works best for you? Oh yeah and have you ever attempted to record something based off a title you came up with for a song? I'm actually thinking of doing that now to stimulate my creativity.
  12. I know I should preferably use real guitars, but for now I'm kinda stuck with vsts. Anyone know how I could make the best of them. I have specifically have used this and this vst, and I tried NI electric guitars that came with kontakt 4. I have Komplete 6 so I have Guitar Rig 4, as well as some free amp/pre-amp vst effects I downloaded. The guitars in the vids don't sound that bad, but idk what effects were used in order to get those sounds from the vsts.
  13. Wow, this is awesome! I'm actually writing my own graphic novel and trying to score it too. I checked out the first one, later this week I'll give the entire album a listen.
  14. Most people usually import files between programs for better editing. A lot of people I know actually import individual tracks or instruments rather than songs too. It's kinda just learning what programs are best for what. Good luck with everything! I'm trying to learn about this stuff too so I kinda know how you might be feeling!
  15. Keep pro tools in mind for the future. I'm just starting out too, the cool thing is while I'm using mixcraft, this "freeware" DAW, my dad back home has pro tools so I can use it to edit. Like Proto said, for sequencing pro-tools is not really that good. In general it has a particularly high learning curve to. My dad has started midi sequencing w/ it though, if you really wanna get a midi input setup going I could ask my dad what he did. But it is probably a better idea for now to get another DAW for sequencing, then convert it to midi and mix and edit it in protools. Keep pro tools, but realize that yeah.. it has a real learning curve. Also you have to pay for certain features even with the complete version, right now at home we can't save our files to mp3 without paying more money. Anyways, if you're sequencing elsewhere, that should at least half the difficulty I guess. Another thing, for future reference, pro tools does support 3rd party VSTs I believe but I don't specifically know how to get it to recognize them, part of the reason I didn't install it on my laptop was cus I couldn't get it to read my VST. It was for the best though cus sequencing in pro-tools isn't simply plug and play and that's what I was looking for lol.
  16. I don't normally use pro tools, but my father does and so I decided to take a piano midi I made and essentially remaster it in protools. When I decided to bounce the audio, the mp3 option wasn't available (do you have to purchase it?), so I converted it to a wave file and got but apparently listening to the bounced wav in another application made it normal (albeit I don't like this piano sound). My question is, is this a common error to experience in pro tools, or did I get something wrong?
  17. I hit the mood but the song isn't really helping my other creative endeavor... I suppose it's just cus it's not complete. But when I listen to Yoko Shimomura's compositions for battles from kingdom hearts it really stimulates my imagination. I'm thinking maybe some kinda percussion might help but I know I defiantly need to work on timing too. The trumpets are kinda suppressed... I don't know how to mix properly The timing is completely my fault, lol I play all my parts by hand, usually without consideration of time signature, at least for my first draft, I'm going to rewrite this song when I create the percussion for it... which I suck at. I can't come up with percussion parts to save my life. It doesn't help that I have a terrible sense of rhythm >_< I did go overboard with the bass. I had two double basses play at the lowest octave. It was weird cus when it was just one it didn't feel loud enough for me, but I'm thinking I could just EQ the better sounding one.. now. There is definitely something wrong with the trumpets, and the trombone... the disappointing thing (or I guess potentially redeeming) is that they're from Kontatk 4. NI's sounds shouldn't be sounding this bad, but I can't mix them that well. I'm still new to making music in general, so I'm not using anything to it's max potential. Btw, I really love the track you posted. That bass reminds me of something from Tron Legacy... and I was kinda a little disappointed with that soundtrack. I wish this were in that movie lol. Here's another song I wrote recently (5 versions to be exact): http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34057 but specifically I wanted to improve the piano version: http://tindeck.com/listen/plul It sounds way too bright for my liking... I wanted it to sound something more like: or more specifically like track 16 from threshold of a dream: http://threshold.ocremix.org/music.php
  18. Wow, nice! I'm accustomed to my airship themes being darker (smb 3's spoiled me), but this is a really good composition! Yeah like everyone else said, the sounds are perhaps the only problem. Someone mentioned that you used slayer, I thought that was suppose to just be a dirty synth. I think you'd be better off using a bright synth or instrument there. Maybe even softer, idk. But in all that was good. When you posted in my other topic, I wanted to tell you that these songs were awesome man. I have no real complaints. Well except, for some reason I want the guitar and bass to sound louder, maybe the entire thing lol. I'm accustomed to having guitars scream in my ear, maybe that's why. My only criticism is that you don't suck and you accept your awesomeness lol. That was honestly a nice beat, a good listen! I know it's a random concept, but I think that everything did go well together. I kinda expected a "breakdown" or a "speed up" part, especially when the orchestral instruments went into the background. Those are honestly some nice sounds though. and to top this all off, here's the latest song I've written. Since I just started composing, it needs work, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with this. I really wanted it to be an rpg or like anime fighting scene, I'm writing a graphic novel and I was hoping to write music that would allow me to envision more scenes, but it lacks that push idk: http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33890
  19. Yeah a lot of people like the leadless versions lol. I'm either thinking of composing a better lead, or working with the timing of the one I have. Or simply chopping it up at some parts, the lead works at the ending but in the beginning I do admit it is kinda forced for the lulz here's a piano version I wrote. It kinda showed me the melody could work if played properly:
  20. I'm trying to make this like a battle theme, like something from final fantasy or kingdom hearts. Any advice?
  21. I have 4 versions of this one song, I'm planning to make a final mix of it, but currently I'm not sure what version of it is best. In your opinion which one do you like the most or see the most potential from: Original: (I'm gonna replace the vsti guitar with a real one) Orchestral lead (violin): I might replace the violin with another orchestral lead Leadless: Leadless w/ distorted bass:
  22. updated the song, edited the bass, still working on quantization though
  23. Yeah, I really like these compositions! I worked on composing stuff on the piano before then adding instruments to it in a DAW, it's a very fun process, I've done that for two of my own songs so far. I really love Spider tower, despite my intense fear and hatred of daddy long legs. I can't wait to see what it'd sound like with other instruments!
  24. I thought for fun I'd write a battle music for a story I'm currently working on. It was intended to be final boss-esque but I feel I've failed miserably at that, in any case I'd like to assess the current composition for what it's worth. I'm still new to writing music in general so I kinda need feedback. General things: -this song doesn't have an intro I wasn't satisfied with the original so I'm going to rewrite it later. The ending is not really an ending, I'm trying to find a way to make it loop so it kinda ends abruptly. I have to address that later. Also when the choir plays the arpeggiated notes, I was trying to have a "ha-ha" effect, I don't know how to give the vst more air so I'm going probably revise that track and simply hold those chords. -I know I have timing issues, some of it is midi lag, but some of it was my timing when I manually input some of the notes in, it's something I'm working on. -I'm still new to mixing, I'm not sure how to bring out the best of these vsts, or able to determine which tracks' volume should be raised or lowered -I need percussion, I don't really know how to write drumlines though so I'll probably do that soon. -I primarily wrote the bassline of the song beforehand, so the transitions might not sound that great I'm not sure. There was a part of the song that became more uplifting, the last transition, it wasn't intentional but battle themes tend to have such a combination of fear and hope, ect... anyway are these transitions terrible, do they need work? -do these combination of instruments work? In terms of composition does this piece of music sound decent (despite issues in timing >_<)? I think that's all... for now:
  25. Ah geez, I couldn't tell >_> I was thinking about buying these, they sound more realistic: and in 10 years I'll finally master guitar well enough to play one song
