Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Servbot#36 replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
I'm probably not the most qualified to say anything about the whole Gamergate thing since I've only really recently made any attempt to learn what it's actually about, but if the experience of trying to sort through all the crazy bullshit of both sides has taught me anything, it's that the labels of pro and anti Gamergate are kind of oversimplified and not very helpful. From what I've found out, Gamergate itself is a pretty multifaceted issue. It's maybe about ethics in game journalism and also feminism and I think inclusivity? Race somehow worked its way in there too in some capacity it seems. And Obamacare somehow showed up in this topic? I'm still totally lost on that one. Honestly I still can't really sort all of it out. I was pretty sure Zoey Quinn was the start of all this but I pretty much only see Anita Sarkeesian's name thrown around in the part of this thread I've managed to read through. But what is pretty clear is that people hardly seem to be arguing the same things and they usually tend to support their opposition for their opponent's arguments by attacking the "side" as a whole. I feel like we would get a lot farther in these things if we weren't trying to prove that the other side is bad. Both sides have very clearly shown that they have their share of toxic douchebags sending death threats and saying racist/misogynistic/homophobic/generally unpleasant shit. And while all the doxxing and threats are obviously terrible and shouldn't be happening, they're not really evidence for your stance on the matter. We'd get a lot farther if we focused on the actual ideas, preferably divorced from the Gamergate label, rather than what terrible things the pro/anti Gamergaters have been up to this last week. It doesn't really make you more right if some lunatics went and attacked a guy for thinking the same things you do. And unless the actual ideas you're arguing against are "It's cool to harass/bully/threaten someone whose opinion differs from mine" (and you know you'll regret actually arguing with the kind of person who actually believes that), there's no real reason to bring it up. So yeah, might have lost focus a teensy bit there but what I mean is that Pro Gamergate and Anti Gamergate are kind of useless terms. They're sort of convenient but at the expense of lumping way too many people together to be able to say anything meaningful about them. And by now, I'd say you're pretty deluded if you think that everyone who calls themselves Pro or Anti Gamergate actually have the same opinions/reasoning behind those opinions on every single one of the trainwreck of topics that somehow got included in whatever Gamergate can even be called. I dunno, this has probably been said here by now. I was just checking in on the thread because I'm still trying to figure the whole thing out and saw that last message. I'm not saying that's been happening here too much (better than elsewhere at least). Seemed like this was the best place to share what I've taken away from the whole thing. But in (more direct) response to what I actually quoted, I think it's kind of pointless to find a true representative of Gamergate. It's just too broad a category and they seem to have wildly different motivations for believing the few things they actually do mostly agree on. I still don't even know where my views would fit into it. EDIT: Totally got beat to a pretty similar point. Wish I hadn't taken so damn long typing this between games of Smash. Ah well, good to know there are people who agree on that point at least. -
You picked a good time to leave. It hasn't been great for a while but it aaaaaall fell apart this last episode. That last plot twist was awful. I'm not gonna spoil the specifics for other people here but it was like they were trying really hard to justify such a dumb twist and ended up making it seem more confusing by just giving the guy like five completely unconnected motivations. And still none of them made any real sense. The Kirito Tiger Knee was pretty cool though.

I'm inclined to agree. Didn't have super high expectations for it after that whole Alfheim arc, but man it was pretty disappointing. Also (and I'm saying this purely as an opinion of course) I wasn't too hot on Kill La Kill. I thought it was pretty okay but it didn't feel like it was really progressing much until the end and the villain seemed kinda lame. What was her motivation? I never figured that out.

Oh, oops. Sorry.

Hey, uh, just letting you guys know, the Megaman X (not the armor one) picture in the top right seems to have a habit of redirecting to other bio pages. I just kind of noticed it once and kept clicking the top right over and over to make sure (X showed up an awful lot). Oddly enough they seemed to be Final Fantasy/Square related almost the times I clicked on it for some reason. I think they were Kefka, Geno, Cid Highwind, the Turks, Vincent Valentine, Crono, Tidus, and Tifa. I think it may have to do with the little "created by" thing but it still miiiiight have been random coincidence. The fifth one, between the Turks and Vincent actually did go to X, though. It's also worth mentioning that the Square characters didn't actually have their pictures on the page it redirected to, the info was just shifted over to the left where it used to be. And now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen those pictures at all up there lately. I'm guessing there's been some glitch that just replaced the Square characters' image up there with X's for some reason, but I barely know anything about this stuff so that could be wrong. I dunno, maybe it's my computer's fault but you guys may want to check that out.

OCR02753 - Kirby's Adventure "Double Rainbow"
Servbot#36 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Hey, I remember this one! I even suggested something that's still there! The workshop version's actually been in my phone for like over a year I think. Still an awesome mix! I think my favorite addition is the fact that it has a name now. -
Regarding the whole reporting any inaccurate information thing, I just wanna check if anyone's brought up the Spider-Man article and the sentence "A bite from a radioactive spider injects high schooler Peter Parker with spider-like powers, including wall-crawling, web-shooting, heightened strength and agility, and danger-sensitive spider-sense." Sort of a small thing, and it's actually true of a couple series and the Sam Raimi movies from the mid 2000's, but in the original and in most series/reboots/alternate Uni(multi?)verses he actually didn't get that power from the spider bite. He made mechanical web shooters and web cartridges to go along with the whole spider theme. Apparently at some point in one of the main ones he got the ability to shoot biological webs after getting turned into a spider and back, but then I guess lost it? Either way it didn't come with the initial radioactive spider thing. Here's the link to the wikipedia article if you want to verify it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man%27s_powers_and_equipment#Artificial_web-shooters Sorry if it's been brought up before, there were like a hundred pages to control+F through and I only have access to this computer for a few more minutes.

wip Have You Raised Ur Low Expectations (H.Y.R.U.L.E. Zelda Mix)
Servbot#36 replied to Swifthom's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Yeah, you should really probably change that title, it's kind of misleading especially given all the arguments about OCR's standards for new mixes. The mix is pretty cool, but it probably doesn't have the variation that OCR would be looking for. I'm only vaguely familiar with the source, but I think it's definitely worth listening to. Not really sure where you'd go after this, but I think it's worth looking into. Good luck if you decide to keep working on it! -
All the music? That's a pretty tall order, even for an album. Thee's a ton of tracks, and good mixes, even minimalist ones, take quite a bit of time. If you really want them done, you should probably pick some specific ones to ask for, or maybe look into organizing (or getting someone to organize) a Golden Sun album. Fair warning, though, most albums take a good few years from start to finish.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Knuckles in Hydro City
Servbot#36 replied to ChaosXYZ's topic in ReMix Requests
Just clarifying, which one's the SK3&K theme? Is it the title screen or something like that that I can't remember, or did you mean Knuckles' theme? -
I liked it! Especially the part where Stickerbrush came in. The energy in that whole section and the end where the two tunes intermix were really cool. The intro did seem maybe a little long and isn't really very different from the original or a lot of remixes of it. Maybe a little more left hand? Also, I didn't think the ending was that bad, but if you're not happy with it, keep looking. But anyways, I think this would sound really cool played live.
-
I would totally support a Battle Network album. I think it should be the whole series, though. A lot of the best tracks were from two and three, and I can think of a few good ones from the last three.

finished Kirby: Grape Garden & Rainbow Resort
Servbot#36 replied to Patrick Burns's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I really liked it! It really does the sources justice, and there's not enough Kirby mixes on the site. I don't really know much about mixing, so I can't offer much constructive criticism. The ending does sound kind of sudden. Maybe a little fade out before the last note would help? Also those lower eighth (sixteenth?) notes initially struck me as a little too loud. They're not obtrusive or anything, but I think it would suit the mood better if they were a little quieter, but you probably shouldn't take my opinion very seriously. I'm really new to arranging. I liked the instrumentation and general feel of it though. You're planning on submitting it right? -
You should probably post a link to the track you have in mind. You should also probably specify the game too. There's like seven different Monster Hunter games released in America alone. Do you mean the main theme? That one would make a good remix. Here's the link: Another one that would make a good remix would be the Pokke Village theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87VbIOFZyNA
-
Oh, yeah. I'd forgotten about that one. I never much liked the game itself, but the shop music-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKNaxnKUMVQ among others was pretty cool. Also, I forgot to post a link to one of my favorite tunes, the only one found in every game, ACDC Town. It sounds slightly different in every game, but I think it sounds best in Battle Network 3 and Battle Network 5 The ACDC tune is one of the best in my opinion, and it could probably be done in a lot of different styles.
-
I totally support this thread. The Battle Network Series has some awesome music, Two and Three especially. The Tree of Life Hospital music above is a great one, but there's also The Main Theme/-MMBN1-3 Wily Computer-MMBN3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLY0M_sZVDM Sad Theme-MMBN3 Kotobuki Building Computer-MMBN 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgAAnyOkd8s Battle Network Six also had some good music that I can't really think of off the top of my head. Anything in any style from the Battle Network series would be pretty cool, there's currently nothing on OCReMix yet.

Brave Fencer Musashi- Several Tunes, Take Your Pick
Servbot#36 replied to Servbot#36's topic in ReMix Requests
That'd be awesome! Musashi legend's been my favorite track from that game since I was seven. -
OCR02405 - Mega Man X2 "X-Hunted"
Servbot#36 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah, that's right. The last levels of X3 are called Doppler Stages, X4 has The Space Dock/ The Final Weapon Stages, X5 has Zero Stages, and I think X6 has Nightmare stages or something. Anyways, I love this mix. I've loved the X Hunter Stage 1/2 theme since I was five, and this mix really does it justice. This, along with Dominc Ninmark's other tracks were some of the best on the album in my opinion. -
Brave Fencer Musashi- Several Tunes, Take Your Pick
Servbot#36 replied to Servbot#36's topic in ReMix Requests
This really would make a good album. The music is pretty consistently good throughout the whole game, it's not just a few exceptional ones. I couldn't really coordinate anything like that, though. I don't really know much about remixing; I can only kind of play the piano. But it would be pretty cool if someone else wanted to try it, or maybe just remix one or two. I think the Legend theme would probably be best. -
OCR01791 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Lava Dead Beat"
Servbot#36 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really like this one. It's a little repetitive, but it's definitely a solid take on two of the best tracks in DKC2. The transition to Arctic Abyss was pretty well done, too. No one's mentioned that yet,it should probably be listed in the source section. But, yeah. Good work. -
Brave Fencer Musashi- Several Tunes, Take Your Pick
Servbot#36 replied to Servbot#36's topic in ReMix Requests
Anyone? You can check out the full soundtrack too, there are a lot of good ones. -
Brave Fencer Musashi had some really good music, but there's only one mix up right now, and that was made nine years ago. There are a lot of other good tunes that haven't been remixed yet. It would probably make a good album, but for now, if anyone wants to take a crack at it, some of the most memorable tracks for me were The Only Friend (Jon's theme) Far into the Sky/Musashi Legend Twinpeak The Village at Night Mysteria Flower Cave Rapids and the Binchotite Mines

Ninsheetmusic probably has the best selection, but it's pretty hard to find easy sheets. I'd suggest the Astral Observatory from Majora's Mask, Dire Dire Docks from Mario 64 or the sad theme from Oracle of Ages/Seasons, but even those would still be pretty tough for a beginner I think your best bet would be to start on the smaller tunes, like the get a weapon tune from Mega Man 3 (not as hard as it looks) or maybe the file select music from Mario 64.
