  1. You've got a good ear if you can hear clipping, Gario! I went over this with Sir_Nuts this afternoon, and he helped me decide to take the clipper out of my mastering chain and just rely on the limiter (I was using both). The clipper was giving the track a clean digital sound but at the expense of clipping (not going over 0db, but clipping the peaks). Mike and I both agree it sounds better and more natural now. Thanks to Mike and Gario, this continues to be a terrific production exercise!
  2. 'The Ballad of Bowser's Balls' - by Chimpazilla mp3 and wav (mastering changed 6/17/16, described below) *SHAMELESS SELF-PANEL ALERT* I had planned to call this track 'OMG No, Not ANOTHER Mario Mix' but ultimately I went with the clickbait title. This started as a production exercise only, but then it became a thing, so I finished it and now I'm foisting it on the unsuspecting public. Sorry guys, I really have no excuse. This was super fun to write though, and I hope it makes everyone smile. Any judge that requires a source breakdown for this remix needs to be fired from OCR in disgrace and forever.
  3. This track is mastered way too quietly. I had to crank the track by 10db just to hear parts of it. The hard panning of the pianos bothers me, and one of the piano samples has a distracting sound when it plays each note, it sounds almost like percussion but I think it's just a flaw in the sample. The playing is pretty stiff, if this was played live then the sample is making the playing sound sequenced. Still I think this is a moody and somber take on these three themes. The transitions are somewhat awkward though, giving the track more of a medley feel than it needs. I think this might work much better if the production and mastering were improved, and if the transitions flowed more smoothly. NO (resubmit)

Asriel wanted nothing more than to stay with the First Human forever, and I wanted to capture the sense of needing to reach out and not only save Asriel's soul but also tell him that he's not alone and that everything's going to be okay.
  5. What a great concept here, very bold. I love the blending of these three themes, they make a really nice cohesive arrangement. The mixing isn't working well though, all the instruments are competing for frequency space in the mix. The sequencing is really rigid. There are several areas in the mix where there are sour notes and/or bad harmonies. The vibraphone is too loud. Still a bit to work on here, but there's a LOT of creativity in this arrangement. I suggest taking this to our forums for further mixing advice! I'd like to hear this one with the production improved! NO (resubmit)

  7. Oh jeez. This IS badass, and also cute and funny (ssssh I didn't say that). Brandon nails these vocals, always right on pitch, and wow what a range.... from Cookie Monster lows to the canines-only-frequency screeching highs. What a great concept this track is. Guitar work is ace. A breakdown would have been nice because the track is relentless but this works in context. It is mixed and mastered really well. I don't think I heard version #1 of this track, but this one works for me! YES
  8. I really like this concept, the instrumentation is good, source is well represented with fun interpretation. I dislike the hard panning of the plucked instrument on the right and the guitar all the way left. The dealbreaker for me is the mastering, it's completely squashed to smithereens. The mix hits -5.9db RMS, I can't see why a mellow-ish track like this would need to be mastered that loud, and it's not clean, it audibly distorts most of the way through the track. Ease off that master compressor. A little less hard panning would be nice, but that is my opinion and not necessary. The mastering fix though, that's necessary. NO (fix mastering and resub please)

It's been a while and I wanted to break the silence with a little FFX arrangement. This actually has a lot of firsts for me (for finished material at least); hardware synths, live recording of vocals/snaps/claps and bass guitar. I actually used my Moog Tribute, run through my modular rack for most of the lead synths (which is why they all sound slightly different, they were recorded at different times, so I had to re-dial-in the sound, live and learn!). I also noticed as I was checking out the other Besaid arrangements before submitting, that Emunator's was influenced by Tycho as well. I think it's super cool that two different people can arrange the same song with the same influencing artist in mind and come up with something so different! Anyway, here's hoping it isn't another few years before the next submission!
  10. This track would need a proper name, not just the name of the source tune. I like the concept and ideas here, but the mix gets really repetitive and the mixing leaves a lot to be desired, bass is muddy/boomy, instruments fight for frequency space, drums are buried, the whole thing sounds overcompressed. I think if backing instruments were widened a bit, it wouldn't sound so crowded in the middle. The lead synth sounds quite dry and lifeless, maybe just a bit of reverb and/or some filter movement or modulation? I think if this were fixed up mixing-wise, and possibly shortened a bit, it would pass. NO (resubmit)

ReMix: (VBR1) (WAV) or, attached if the Box bandwidth runs out. Comments: "Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon!! Oh man, it's such a great game... Makes me wish I had a 3DS. Next best thing? Watching Marriland narrate through his mostly-blind LP for all the characters, giving each of them their own distinct personalities. When watching the LP, as soon as Marriland reached Revelation Mountain (which is the site for a mind-blowing plot twist! No one spoil it!), I said right then and there, "OMG YES, best track in the game [besides that of the final boss battle]". Having seen the plot unfold, I found it to have just the right melodic contour and chord progressions to elicit an emotional connection with the plot itself, and it even reiterates the same primary motif in different contexts like you might hear in a great ReMix. After listening to 'Revelation Mountain' for a few days, I found myself humming countermelodies to it. That tends to be a good sign, so I just went with my gut and started something. What you hear is pretty much exactly how I imagined it, from beginning to finish. In general, I wanted something ambient/atmospheric, generally low-key and relaxing, that later unfolds into an impactful section, and somehow tapers off for an outtro. It was kind of a challenge to incorporate a slow yet engaging pacing while not using too many intense drum samples, but it was still fun! For some atonal percussion, I recorded myself jangling coins, and I lightly glitched some tablas and rimshots (I did end up using some cinematic drums though!). I made many of the bell sounds, while a few others are from Crypto Cipher (Tabla Tarangs) and Impact Soundworks (Resonance). For the arrangement, you could say I went with the flow. I was a bit inspired by some of the Shou Drum demos from Impact Soundworks in terms of the meditative tones, but mainly I just wrote what came to mind---often something I hummed or simply imagined while not using FL Studio. I actually put in some of those countermelodies I hummed (the "secondary lead" bells at 1:56 - 1:59, 2:25 - 2:34, and 3:23 - 3:37). While writing this, I was also listening to the rest of the soundtrack, and I came across 'Tree of Life (Roots)', and geez, some seriously emotional passages in that as well! Some of the chords reminded me of the theme for the final fight in Mystery Dungeon 2, and I ended up humming that theme atop 'Tree of Life (Roots)', so I was inspired to incorporate both of those as well. Overall, unlike much of my other music, I'm actually most proud of the -compositional- nuance that went into this, and I hope you enjoy this too! The ReMix title is based on the many alliances you make in the game, and the "CONNECTED!" message that pops up in the middle of the screen." 13. Super conservative but good metal guitars. Drums aren't blowing me away. edit 7/5/16: Wow this is conservative. Both the remix and original are at 130bpm. I layered them together and the arrangements are identical. I'm leaning heavily toward NO but am I wrong to reject this for being conservative when it's a metal interpretation? It's not a midi rip. I'm torn. Call me Rip Torn.

We were able to get the song's original composer, Grant Kirkhope, to listen to our remix because we know he's a metalhead. He told us he liked our take on it and our attention to detail. This remix is meant to sound like it could fill the same role as it's source - an opening to the game - and yet sound more solemn/contemplative/melancholic, like the weight of the entire game is on the shoulders of this one song... or something. Oh, and the melody I ended the remix on? Completely intentional.

That means I've been working on it for almost four years. Countless collaborators participated to its creation, and I can't thank enough those who patiently helped me. Advance Wars is a series I enjoyed a lot on GBA, and Sturm always has been a problem, as the final boss. The music of those two games is really interesting, and Sturm's theme kept looping in my head -- I had to remix it. During this period, I was listening to a lot of Helloween (still do), and this remix is a tribute to their music that inspire me a lot. The metal fans may find out I was inspired by the song ""Are You Metal?"" by that band, and I decided to write a similar song for Sturm. All riffs, solos, synths, and stuff in that remix were written from Sturm's theme, while the structure itself is inspired by Helloween's song. As always, after the horrible MIDI arrangement, I contacted my recording buddies, Tuberz McGee and Furilas, in order to have live guitars, bass, and vocals. I also contacted Mirby to get a better version of my lyrics. After all, my English isn't the best -- vive la révolution! The first version was rejected by the Judges and cut from BA2, despite my best attempts to master the beast. And when Pieter contacted me to help him on BA3, I knew it was the time to finish it. Not so strangely enough, it was the last track we finished for the album (searching for a good vocalist, re-recording of the guitars that were lost in a data transfer, etc.) but I think we really did something epic. Thanks a bunch to everyone who helped -- especially Tuberz, Furilas, Mirby, and Brandon -- they were BadAss enough to keep Sturm alive. Now, enjoy this track and the rest of the album. \m/ Mirby: Chernabogue needed better lyrics for this song so, being a fan of the series, I obliged and helped out, adding in more references to the games and the world in which they take place. It was fun to write. Bradon Strader: The universe conspired against me finishing this song but it's done, so enjoy it! Tuberz McGee: So Alex (the bae) asked me to do guitar things for a metal thing on an album thing and I said sure thing. So I loaded up the file and saw that he'd written some tough stuff so I actually had to practice, so whatever I guess that's a good thing right? Either way, this song is BadAss. 18. previous decision Took me a while, but here’s a resub of http://ocremix.org/community/topic/42198-no-vampire-killer-wicked-chip/ Mostly did production stuff like EQ and volume balancing, but I also re-recorded most of the vocoded vocals and changed the drum samples. I liked Emunator’s idea of having the song break wide open after the intro, so the intro is deliberately dry, mono chiptune instruments and drums. I've also reworked on transitions to give more fluidity on this arrangement. Now, they are shorted and different parts come after the others more naturally. 20. Gario is right yet again. Yep this is pretty darned conservative. The instrumentation is different, but not enough imo to overcome the verbatim source writing. The synths are pretty generic sounding, although they are used well enough. I definitely recommend you add some writing variation somewhere along the way (and/or some instrument variation at some point) to set your arrangement apart from the original. The overcompression is another issue, you've got the track limited so it peaks at -2db, there's no reason to set your limiter ceiling that low. The track really pumps and not in a good way, it's a mushy wall of sound with no dynamics. Like Gario, I really like this track. Fix it up and let's hear it again! NO (resubmit)
  21. Once again Gario nailed it. The track does sound overcompressed, ease up on that final limiter at least by raising the limit to 0 or -0.1 or so but -3 is a bit too much. The leads are indeed drowned out. The drum shuffle is getting lost in distortion as well. Decompressing the track should fix all of this and give it more dynamics overall. You've got some lovely purposeful distortion/bitcrushing going here but the overcompression is causing it to lose impact. And yes please fix the ending. You don't have much of an ending written there, but even if you leave it as-is, you've got to at least render to the end of the final delay tail. NO (resubmit please)
  22. This isn't the greatest piano sample, is it. It most certainly does not sound like midi to me... although sections like 1:42-2:10 (where the notes are played single-file) are really not well served by this particular sound. I wouldn't even know how to begin timestamping this arrangement, I'll leave that to Larry but I seem to be hearing plenty of source. I like this arrangement quite a lot. If there were a way to upgrade this piano sound I'd say let's get that done, but absent that I'm still a YES on this cool arrangement. I love the style change at 4:38 (following the Fur Elise interlude)! The good outweighs the bad for me. YES
  23. It's low-heavy but I love low-heavy and the lows are well controlled. Perhaps a bit more highs would be nice, but I'm not having an issue with balance. This is a really nice take on this source, moody yet groovy. Good sound choices. The transition at 2:12 is awkward and unsignaled, could have used some transition sfx at least (the little reverse that's there is too short to signal this transition on it's own). Overall nice work. YES
  24. Wow, what a nice voice! I think the drums could be a little louder, the vocal is a bit loud by comparison and seems to stick out of the soundscape a bit. Perhaps a bit of reverb on the vocal would help melt it into the track better. I'm not having a problem with the transition at 2:04, it's bridged just fine for me. Nice track. YES
  25. The vocal starting at 2:25 is a little drowned out by the instrumentation, but wow, all the vocals here are excellent. What a lovely arrangement and beautiful performances. The track could have been mastered just a little bit louder. But this is really very nice. YES
