  1. Nice remix! Source song is amazing and you treat it well.

    For some feedback, I feel that the rhytm guitar is a bit low and it creates a weird contrast with the kick drum. It seems to me that you wanted to make a raw sounding kick sound for a heavy vibe, but the kick is the only heavy thing in the song, so it sounds weird. I think it'd sound more natural if the rhytm guitar had more presence in the mix.

    Orchestral interlude is very very cool. What libraries are you using there? They sound very good. Chiptunes are also nice. I like how many elements this song has.

    I can't really criticize that much to be honest, only my small gripe with how the rhytm guitar sounds. It lacks power! Otherwise, very very good remix.

  2. Interesting! Source has some nice chords so it lends itself well to the treatment you gave it here.

    First thing to notice is that the mix is very very quiet. I'm terrible at making loud mixes but this one is way too quiet!

    Anyway, regarding the mixing. Most elements sound good and are easy to pick appart from each other. However, I feel the bass is lacking. Kick has barely any low frequencies and the bass is very low volume, which is a shame since what I can hear from it sounds good, although it seems to lack a bit of articulations to make it sound better.

    Regarding the arrangement, it's a nice take on the source. I feel it gets a tad repetitive though, you could try making more chord variations or switching the key of the song. You could also try having a break in the middle with only piano or something to switch it up. Maybe even going to 6/8 like the source for a bit would be cool.

    Only thing that bothers me is the back-up synth pad, which I'm almost sure is playing some off-notes in the second chord of the main progression. It sounds a tad off to me.

    Anyway. This is very cool, particularly the break at 1:10 which is very nice!

  3. I like the mood of this remix! I like the rhytm of the drums. I do agree with timaeus that they're lacking a lot of variation (they're almost a carbon copy of the original). You use a hi-hat, kick and snare for the whole song. Nothing else. Try adding more variations to the percussions.

    Leads are often pretty good. Synths in particular are great (volume is a bit odd at 0:10 though). Some guitar lines didn't convince me much though, like the one at 0:37, it feels you could do more with that melody.

    Reverb is a bit exaggerated in some instruments. I dig the heavy reverb snare in the intro but you should dial it down later. Same goes for the synth hits you use during most of the remix.

    Overall, I like the mood you're going for but I feel you could add more to it! Change up the leads, change up the percussions. Maybe write some variations of the original theme, since it feels very derivative as it is now.

  4. Also, yes, MK8's 3 or 4 player gameplay has got to be like 25 fps. I think they had to make the decision to either drop a lot of cool graphical stuff to keep framerate high or drop the framerate to keep the graphical stuff at its best. They picked the latter. Obviously I don't know that for a fact, that's just a guess. But with like Mario Kart Wii, they dropped some graphical additions from characters and stages in 3-4 player modes to maintain a high framerate. They did that in 2-4 player modes in Double Dash as well and I'm pretty sure they did that in games before it too. Pretty sure MK8 was the first time they decided to go for graphics over framerate in multiplayer modes, which honestly I think is a little silly. It's hard to see how pretty stuff is when your screen in 4 player is ¼ what it is in one player.

    From what I know, MK8 is 60fps for 1 and 2 players, 30fps for 3 and 4 players. In that case it isn't a matter of dropping one or two effects, it's the fact that they're rendering the image 4 times that forces them to lower the framerate. Of course, if the overall game looked a lot worse (like, less polygons and stuff) they could pull off 60fps with 4 players. Looking back, the same happened with Mario Kart Wii, and that game didn't look special at all, so it isn't Nintendo choosing pretty over functional I believe. As you say, I believe MKDD indeed mantained 60fps for all modes, no clue how!

    Regarding the topic, I don't have a strong preference in most cases. However, there are types of games that need to be 60fps. Precision platformers, fighting games and similar games based on reactions need to run at 60fps since it improves the playability.

  5. From my time playing Dream Theater lots of years ago, the chords are these:

    CHORUS: G#m / F# / C# (2 bars) [Repeat this many times until 12:04]

    E / F# / E / D#sus (chord notes are D# F A#, not sure if that one is called sus or something different).

    Theory wise, the whole chord progression, bar the E chord, is moving in the D# minor key, which is the final chord. Chorus is based on a mode of that key.

    Now, for the E chord, I believe this is called a Neapolitan Chord ( http://www.musictheory.net/lessons/121 ). Essentially, you move the second note of your key one semitone back and play a major chord. It usually works well as a resolution to the root!

    Many bands use that progression, particularly in progressive music. Some examples from British band Frost*:

    . In Pocket Sun, chords are G#min, E, C#m, A (some 7ths thrown in there too!). In Falling Down, the base key is G minor and you may notice both the initial verse and the piano verse end with G#.

    I'm not an expert in theory, so feel free to correct me!

    As a final note, if you look at the piano voicing (right hand), the progression looks more natural.

    G#min is G# B D#.

    F# is F# B# C#.

    C# is F G# C#.

    E is E G# B.

    You may notice how natural it feels to move from C# to E! This isn't musical theory of course, but I've noticed many bands (Genesis for example) do a lot of strange chord progressions that make a lot of sense when looking at the movement in the keys!

    I have no idea if my headphones are to blame but I believe there's some clipping? When the toms go crazy I hear crazy things in my right speaker...

    I really like how you transitioned between the first two sources. The piano interpretation of the second source (forgot which one it was, sorry!) is very cool. Nice work making it sound creepy and mysterious. Transition to the third/fourth (maybe more?) sources was also cool. You create an interesting imagery with all the different layers. It feels a bit dense, but I guess that was your intention!

    Regarding mixing, besides the possible clipping I mentioned earlier, I feel you may have went a bit overboad with the reverb in some instruments. Particularly piano and percussions. Strings sound great.

  7. Nice switch at 0:39! Intro is a bit long but this idea is wonderful!

    So, I'm not an expert in whatever style this is, but I have some comments.

    The synth pad that replaces the original strings has way too much of a hat-ish sound. It takes over a lot of the spectrum and, particularly, takes space away from the snare.

    Like Solkrieg above me suggests, the snare could use more reverb and stuff. Think 80s dreamy snare!

    Continuing with the sounds, I feel the bass isn't fitting at all. For such a down tempo song, I'd go with more of a pleasing tone.

    In the section beggining at 1:06, I notice some slight dissonances (not intentional ones) in the string pad. Nobody mentioned them earlier but they bother me a bit.

    The synth lead you use in that section could use more portamento.

    Lead at 2:19 is a nice idea, but it's a tad too low and the tone alterations are a bit risky! I'd probably add a bit more echo to it.

    Note played by the organ-ish at 2:47 has a high chance of being off-key. You should check it. In a similar note, the lullaby-ish melody from the intro doesn't really fit the chord progression. I'm sure you could make some alterations to make it sound more natural. I think it clashes a bit with the pads that play the staccato chords.

    I understand the above complaints about repetition in the song, but they don't bother me much. I do, however, think you could change it up a bit to make it more engaging. For example, in the breakdown with the intro melody you could try radically different sounds. You could also add more elements to the beat in each repetition. It's not necessary that you suddenly turn this into a high tempo song, but you could add more percussive elements (or experiment with more melodies).

    Overall, this is nice. Love the idea and I think that with some polishing it could be great! Style reminded me of the Leitbur remixes in the FFVI OCReMix album, maybe you could pick ideas from those?

  8. Nice guitar tones and playing! Arpeggios are very clean!

    When you switch from the orchestral intro to the metal section, the tempos don't match. Maybe it was intentional, but it feels super weird to me.

    I honestly feel the production is very good. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me can point mixing errors but I like it!

    This is quite cool! I'm sure aware that the arrangement wouldn't pass by OCR standards but I don't think that matters :-P

  9. This is a hard question. I generally love melody and emotion in music. Mainly pretty melodies. But I can also get behind a good rhytm (like trash stuff)!

    When listening to music, there are lots of things I appreciate. I love jazzy 7th chord progressions for example. I also love creative chord progressions. In sounds I really like synth pads and stuff like that, but organic instruments are cool too!

    Lately I've been super obsessed with Genesis. Maybe it's because I'm a keyboardist, but I find their music incredible. The chord progressions in their songs are super creative and I really envy Tony Banks for coming up with them! Their songs are also pretty technical so they're fun to learn and play!

    I think my songs reflect this to some extent. I use lots of 7th chords and lots of synth pads, but also a lot of piano! With remixes I don't fool around with melodies that much, but what I like doing is slight variations over a same musical idea. That is cool too!

    Yes, the knee has a sweet spot. Falcon feels pretty good in this game IMO, many strong attacks side+B is good now.

  11. This looks cool. I don't own a 3DS so I may buy one.

    The name isn't good by any means but I don't think it'll hurt it all. They didn't want to put a name like "Super 3DS" because it'd sound like a new generation rather than a "small" improvement. Or I guess that's why they just named it that way.
