  1. Sounds like you have it on the auto snapshot. It should say auto at the top of the browser, click on that and pick a different snapshot
  2. Definitely try dialing it back a bit. Especially where they're trading parts and not playing something similar, just snapping from one side of the stereo field to the other like that is going to be jarring.
  3. I'm also suspicious that either something with that is changed for rendering or maybe most of the native plugins have some kind of HQ rendering mode that you *can't* turn off. Haven't tested it enough to say definitively, but I do feel like there's some difference between live playback and render in FL that I haven't noticed with Renoise or Modplug. If I'm really nitpicky about the mixing and mastering on a particular piece I can wind up rendering it 50 times trying to fine tune it. Then again taking a few minutes off to render can give a different perspective and I obviously have confirmation bias since I had this idea at some point in the past and am now looking for it every time. Although a few months ago I did have one lead that was perfectly audible in FL render as nearly inaudible repeatedly until I changed it. Not sure why that would happen unless it actually renders differently, any DC offset or phasing issues and such should be apparent live wouldn't they? I'd say per note controls and slides on native generators is also something really good about FL that most other DAWs aren't even attempting. That kind of granular control does make some things easier in FL or trackers than they would be with VST instruments, but then your average listener won't notice most of it anyway and it's only really applicable to synthesizers or drum samples since DirectWave is very basic
  4. In the case of a piano piece, there's only one instrument to worry about and it's harmonic series isn't as dense as say a distorted guitar or a snare. Play the same low piano chords along with loud drums, a bass guitar, guitars playing distorted power chords, some sustained strings...it can get messy. EQ, compression, panning, mixing, these are all important but getting many instruments to play nice together begins with writing and instrumentation. And as far as umbrella advice where we haven't heard the piece in question, the start would be the place to start.
  5. New Vegas froze for me ON THE LOAD SCREEN coming back from a save, so that when I try to reload the save it just stays on the load screen forever. New Vegas is totally better though, I actually just got bored with FO4. For some reason I'm more willing to swallow Bethesda's copy paste nothing really matters approach in a classic fantasy setting(TES) than with the 50s post apocalypse, I could still go back and redo all the shit I've done 50 times before in Skyrim. Dunno why that is, objectively FO4 is probably better on both quality and quantity, but then that's only considering the objective aspects of quality and not how much of it is really subjective
  6. All depends on what limiter, some have more controls, some have less and some don't even have a threshold or a ceiling. Reading the manual for any plugins is always a good move. I use the host native limiter and Maximus in FL myself because I'm ghetto and these have idiosyncrasies like an ahead knob that has nothing to do with look ahead and is actually more like sustain and an attack knob that actually functions as look ahead and creates latency...those things would create all sorts of problems for someone that didn't read about it.
  7. Closing piece would also be an interesting choice. I'd take a crack at it and see where it goes anyway but I don't think anyone wants to hear my soundfont orchestra I'm also interested in using Never Look Back, did you listen to the updated WIP Brandon?
  8. Doing compos has made this very apparent to me. I can think that what I just made was total garbage and people will like it, or I can be like "this is the best thing I've ever made" and it doesn't do as well as I thought. As an artist it's hard to predict how other people will react, and you might like or dislike your own work for reasons that aren't apparent to anyone else but you. You also don't have to release everything you make, just write tons of music. Trent Reznor has said this has been more or less the process him and Atticus Ross have used in their film scores since they don't have the experience in that field that others do, if you have the time to make a lot of music some of it is probably going to be ok.
  9. Don't worry too much about what comes with the DAW, there are so many free VSTs out there. Pick the DAW that's easier to work with or otherwise you believe is better as a core program. I'm not as sure on Reaper but I think both programs come with a competent set of effects, and it seems like the instruments you're interested in aren't the kind of thing a DAW would ship with anyway. I'd personally recommend FL because it's what I use and I'm not biased at all, but both programs have pretty lax demo restrictions, give them a try The SNES sound was mostly due to very very small samples, so there were a lot of them that were super short, at ridiculous sample rates and bit depth, and they'd be looping almost immediately. There is a free VST that I can't remember the name of that can load .spc and play samples actually used in SNES games, I'm sure someone here knows what that is. Genesis used FM synthesis, I think VOPM is supposed to be similar or the same in character. FL's 3x osc is also great for fakebit but there are also various VST plugins that will give you more of an authentic chip sound.
  10. Yeah I completely missed it, as it turns out the sound I recreated also happens on the same time stamps and I assumed it was the foreground element you were after. It's possible to do a sound like that via synthesis but as the other two posts said, it's most likely just a sample that's been dropped

  12. There are a lot of different ways to go about it. There are drum machines(not really familiar with the VST equivalent of these but FL's FPC/DirectWave or Renoise's integrated sampler can both do what you're talking about), there are drum machines that use stacked synthesizers instead of samples(and some that do both), you can just drop the wav files right on the timeline/playlist or whatever your DAW calls it, you can load samples or synthesizers individually and use the piano roll which makes it easy to repitch things all over the place if that's your thing, there's beat slicers where you can take a loop and chop up each hit for use in a piano roll... Samples themselves are also open ended. Acoustic drums, samples of old drum machines, samples of complicated modular synthesizers, all of these things layered and otherwise mangled together into something entirely new, they could be recordings of someone hitting a gas can or a washing machine. Tons of possibilities, just have to dive in and find out what works for you

  18. Most of gol's plugins are legit, albeit some aren't included with producer edition, but then the props also sell their best plugins as rack extensions now instead of including them with Reason. FL signature bundle is about the same cost as Reason IIRC and comes with FL's best plugins minus Harmor. OTOH Reason does come with much better sample content, and also has much more good content available for it's native sampler than what IL has for DirectWave(some good ISW stuff though). If you're looking at these two DAWs on included gear, I think that's a much bigger difference than the synthesizers or the effects
  19. D: Get a better PC -hides- On a more serious note, couldn't you back up an external drive every so often? Maybe just my bad luck but basically anything with moving parts isn't reliable, old cartridge systems and handhelds are the only thing I've had last 10+ years...think I had my gamecube for around 10 years actually and it never broke, I just got rid of it...no hard drive in that though and it had the simple flip top disc reader instead of the more complicated and error prone ones that are used these days.

  21. What sfz player are you using? I don't recall having this issue with sforzando or with the old rgc audio sfz player, but I did have to manually remap some of the patches for use in directwave and renoise's sampler It's worth another look I think, SSO is the best free orchestral library IMO. You should also get squidfont and whatever else you can find though, getting anything decent out of freebies involves a lot of searching and patience, you're probably not going to get everything you want in one place
  22. If you open the clips channel settings the knobs for the minimum and maximum values are in the top left. For tempo automation you can also right click the tempo LED, copy, and then paste that to an auto clip point
  23. You can write entire songs in one pattern in FL if you don't like the abstraction of having a bunch of pattern loops cobbled together... I've spent some time demoing other DAWs myself as of late so I have my own thoughts on them from the perspective of a long time FL user. FL11 made some frustrating changes like the piano roll auto zoom and brush muting and other issues mostly related to it's window based GUI have crept in over the years(FL12 will fix some of this), plus I prefer the approach other DAWs have of tying instruments to mixer tracks automatically...so I've been using Renoise a bit in the past couple years and looking at other DAWs, but what I've found is that FL still does some things far better for me than other DAWs. Skipping Renoise because if you thought FL was obfuscated you're probably not going to want to try a tracker, and since you're asking about MIDI keyboards, it's not a great paradigm to work within for recording MIDI controllers I crashed Live within an hour of starting the demo. Have played with it very little since. I like how DAWs like Live, Bitwig, Renoise etc have an effect lane at the bottom where their native effects will load in a fixed position and everything stays in it's place. It's very easy to get overwhelmed by windows in FL. These also usually have simple knobs or sliders that show exact values at all times, where in FL you usually have to move a knob or slider to get the hint bar to display a value. The piano roll has a nice collapse function where you can hide unused notes, which makes programming anything that doesn't modulate much or borrow notes easier. Bitwig had issues with my audio drivers and getting it to even make sound was frustrating. Actually Reaper stopped making sound until I uninstalled Bitwig too. Needless to say my impression is that it has some good ideas and may wind up having great workflow, but currently isn't reliable. Not surprising considering it's pretty much Ableton jr and I had the same experience with that Reaper seemed like I'd have to spend weeks configuring the thing to work the way I want(though it does seems to have options to change most behaviors). It's also more optimized for recording where I primarily work with software. I may not be done looking at this, I've been evaluating it for nearly 1200 days apparently...it's probably not for me but I do have more positive to say about it than most, it's highly customizable and very stable Reason seemed like the cable routing could easily become a nightmare and I wasn't going to leave behind my VSTs to buy into the closed system unless it completely blew me away(not rewiring, as I said the "everything is in different windows" effect FL already has going on was something I was looking for alternatives to). Also didn't like how selecting a device in the rack didn't allow me to play with it on my keyboard, have to select it in the sequencer(maybe there's a way to change this, didn't dig that deep because the other factors made it clear I wasn't going to wind up using this). None of the DAWs I tried had a piano roll anywhere near as fluid and powerful as FL's, some were particularly bad but none were as good as FL's. I couldn't find an option in any of these DAWs to disable MIDI input velocity or even better, to modify it as you can do in FL. This is quite handy for MIDI controller keyboards as many have very poor velocity response. So yeah, FL isn't perfect but having spent the past couple years looking at other options, I'm still pretty happy with it. It starts fast, has a low memory footprint, never crashes...that already puts it ahead of some of the other most commonly recommended DAWs in my book, just the simple fact that it actually works as intended...a few DAWs I didn't even try because they have a reputation of being buggy and crash prone --- No recommendations on keyboards. I currently have a novation launchkey 49 and it's nice when it works, but it will frequently stop sending data to the host. LEDs still work and it will start sending again after hitting all the keys a lot(to hosts that don't rescan MIDI devices) so I don't think it's the usb connection... --- Sample quality does matter but you still need to play or sequence it well and know how to process things as well. Kontakt is pretty much the standard for sampled instruments, so that would be a good place to start. Komplete isn't too much more(considering what you get), so if you want a lot more samples and synths that's worth looking at
  24. Mostly experimentation and I may get ideas from there. I never really have original music pop into my head during daily life, sometimes when I'm really sleepy I have a lot of weird stuff go through my head but it isn't what most people would consider coherent music...
