Pimp My Live Rig! (aka. I need second opinions)
suzumebachi replied to zircon's topic in Music Composition & Production
Oh hell yes. I agree with you 1000%. One thing I neglected to mention in my post is that a few friends that can help out can go a LONG ways. You will drive yourself insane trying do everything alone; especially your first gig. Bring a buddy or two along, even if they're just there for support (or to cheer you on or whatever). -
OCR 'Must-Have Games' List: -Part TWO-

Chrono Cross - YES A lot of people hate on this game for some reason. Probably because it's the sequel to Chrono Trigger and they were expecting the greatest game of all time as a sequel. Chrono Cross may not be the best game of all time, but it's pretty damn good. And unlike most RPGs, it's actually quite replayable. Add to that the storyline, the awesome graphics for its time, and like sephfire said, one of the greatest soundtracks ever, and you've got a winner. Doom II - YES While some will argue that Doom 1 and 2 are too similar to make a distinction, I will have to disagree. Doom 2 had MUCH more atmosphere to it. From the depths of hell to the gritty portrayal of post demon invasion earth, it just has more detail to it than its predecessor. Plus some of the greatest level designs in gaming history. Definitely a must have. -

Final Fantasy VIII - NO Final Fantasy VIII isn't a bad game. But it's severely mediocre, and easily the weakest of the Final Fantasy series. While the graphics improved over FF7, everything else took a step in the opposite direction. Sir_NutS summed it up quite well in his post. The story and characters really are quite lame. Warcraft II - YES Warcraft II was freaking awesome for its time. And it's still pretty fun today. While Warcraft: Orcs & Humans may have started the Warcraft franchise, Warcraft II is really what launched it. It was a fantastic RTS, and laid the foundations for the Warcraft universe as we know it today. Unreal Tournament - abstain UT was fun for a little while, but it, like many other multiplayer only FPS games, got boring pretty quick. Some people seem to like it, but after the 30th time hearing "M-M-M-M-MONSTER KILL" after shooting a dozen people in the face with a sniper rifle, it was time for me to move on. -
Really. As a guitar player. Yeah because, learning finger placement on the fretboard is like, totally unimportant. Learning rhythm is like, totally unimportant. Learning basic music theory, again, totally unimportant. Really. I mean, when was the last time you heard a chord in a song? Oh by the way, power chords are chords too. To suggest otherwise suggests complete ignorance. Which, coming from you? Unsurprising. Really. So what you're saying is minor chords and diminished chords are never used in popular music, but they're staples of jazz and... and even classical! Really. Good to see you back to your usual bullshit, Mike. And by bullshit, I mean pretending to know everything. When really, you don't know anything. Really. HAHAHA REALLY

that would be a good choice. for anything. ever.

it's not 8 installs of drivers. all 8 of them appear even after formatting and reinstalling windows. i imagine if i install linux, linux would detect it 8 times too. so it's gotta be something with either the card or the motherboard. unfortunately i don't have another AGP card to test in it, or another computer to test the card in.

to keep ants and termites off them. we do the same thing here. one of the reasons i hate texas is that they DON'T paint their trees. -
what do you mean "manually" install drivers? is there any other way? if the drivers are installed it appears as: Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter Radeon X800 Display Adapter if the drivers are not installed, it appears as: Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device Unknown VGA Device (or something. i'm paraphrasing, i'm not at home)

From personal experience I have learned that if you REALLY want to hustle, you're definitely gonna need your own sound system (and you won't be able to fit that in a suitcase). Especially since you're going to be electronic (ie: you won't have loud ass guitar amps and loud ass acoustic drums). Some places are going to have some rigs set up for you, but most of the smaller venues you're gonna play are not. First you'll need at least one monitor so you can hear yourself. Or you can wear headphones. Or both. Peavey actually makes some pretty decent gigging monitors, but if you want something rugged that's gonna last, I suggest JBL. For your PA system, again, JBL makes some quality shit. If you're gonna be playing some larger, outdoor venues you'll want something bigger though. And you'll probably need a bigger amp. My band was lucky in that we were able to borrow some crown amps and stackable stadium speakers from the student association at New Mexico tech. Without that stuff we would have never been able to play outdoor gigs: Like this. You're not fitting all of that in a suitcase, mate. Plus if it rains, you'll want protection: And I can't stress JBL quality enough. We played out in the mud: (the JBL speakers are just in front of the camera where you can't see em). All our stuff got completely soaked in mud. But even after that, the JBLs like the day they were new. However our one peavey speaker never worked again. In addition to all this you'll also probably have a mixer, racks full of compressors, EQs, light controllers, and power conditioners. You'll also need some snakes, and lighting rigs if those aren't provided for you. Overall you're looking at several thousands of dollars worth of gear just to get started. And probably a van or large truck to haul the stuff around with. And a couple of friends to help you set up. Otherwise you're gonna have to stick to playing places with their own sound gear (like karaoke bars and high schools like tweek mentioned). And people wonder why musicians can't make money doing live stuff anymore. It's still fun though: JBLs can even survive transvestites! (Ok maybe I went overboard on the pix. Sue me. I'm bored and have nothing better to do.) -
i'm curious as to how not having enough power would cause the computer to detect 8 video cards? i can understand how it might cause it to blue screen or otherwise fail, but the 8 video card thing is what's really throwing me off here.
-
power supply is a basic antec 420 watt. i tried those omega drivers but they do the same exact thing. as soon as i install them, the computer blue screens after rebooting.

I've been having problems with one of my computers for a couple of weeks now. I put it together out of some spare parts to be used for photography purposes (ie: scanning, editing). It works fine except for an extremely weird problem with the video card. For one thing, it appears exactly 8 times in the device manager and in system information; even after a fresh format and reinstall of Windows. If I attempt to install the manufacturer drivers (ATI Catalyst) the computer will blue screen on bootup until I do a system restore. As a result, I'm pretty much stuck with generic Windows display drivers, which are extremely slow. It literally takes 5-10 minutes to load a decent sized .jpeg. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. I don't know if it's the video card, or the motherboard. Both have worked fine in the past. Here are the specs: Motherboard: Chaintech VNF3-250 Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Memory: 1GB Corsair DDR400 Video: ATI Radeon X800 AGP Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

StarCraft - YES Does it need an explanation? Wing Commander - YES DIE KILRATHI SCUM! Ahh, yes, the memories. Wing Commander is probably the first "simulator" game I ever played. And I played the shit out of it. God that game was fun. The details they put into it were pretty tight for its time. Like how if one of your wingmen dies, they're dead for the rest of their game, and they get "KIA" next to their name on the roster. Lots of other little small things made this game great. GoldenEye 007 - YES Oh man. Best console FPS ever? Single player was fantastic, and had amazing replayability. I probably played through the dam and facility levels a hundred times each. Maybe more. And the multiplayer was fucking godly. I'd go so far as to say GoldenEye 007 is probably the best split screen multiplayer game ever made. Fallout - YES A unique, original, extremely well done, and amazingly fun RPG for the PC. Fallout was freaking fantastic. And Fallout 2 expanded and improved the concept even further. These games are both definitely must have. -

Cave Story - YES It's freaking awesome, and it's freaking free. Probably the best freeware game ever made. And it's free. Did I mention it's free? Descent - YES The original Descent was pretty damn innovative for its time. And it was super fun too. It's like, a totally different kind of FPS. I never played Descent III, but Descent and Descent II were both pretty badass. Quake - YES Oh man. Now we're talking. Just to give you an idea of how much I love this game, it came out 11 years ago and I still play it. The original game had such incredible atmosphere, even right down to the packaging. Gritty earth-tone graphics, bizarre Lovecraftian monsters, and a Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. It doesn't get much better. -

my proudest achievements would be how vastly i've improved since i became serious about being a musician. seriously, listen to something of mine circa 2001 or 2002, compared to something i wrote today. it's fucking amazing.

I'LL BITE! Age: 22 Sex: Manly Location: Ciudad de Belén de Nuevo México 1.) What is your favorite game series? probably the Legend of Zelda 2.) What is the game series you are best at? that's a tough one. probably Legend of Zelda again, but there's lot of other games I'm good at. 3.) What game from your favorite game series is your favorite? Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (best game ever?) 4.) What games in your favorite series do you OWN (Rentals and Past Ownership don't count, though you can include Past Ownership if you note those). Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Legend of Zelda III: A Link to the Past, Legend of Zelda IV: Link's Awakening, Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda: Mujora's Mask, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I'll probably be picking up Phantom Hourglass sometime this weekend. 5.) WHY is your favorite game series your favorite, and why would you suggest others to look into it? Why? I dunno. The gameplay, the music, the overall awesomeness, it's all there. Plus there's something satisfying about beating some big baddy and getting a spiffy new weapon or tool to help you on your quest (DAH DAH DAH DAHHHHHHHHH!). -

slowdowns? no chiptune soundfonts? whaaaa? there's lots of chiptune soundfonts out there. most of them are actually pretty awful, but that's not to say they don't exist. the way I did it however, was through usage of VSTi. ymVST to be precise (which I no longer use since the creation of my own nintendo chip synth). then it was just a matter of crunching some mono drum samples. it's really not even a very accurate chiptune (there's too much polyphony for one thing). once you render it, it can be used however the hell you want. like how spekko wrote the intro of black wing metamorphosis around it. that's just one method; there's tons of different ways to do it. you can use soundfonts, you can recycle old compo packs, or you could even sequence actual NSFs etc with famitracker and convert them to WAV. if you know synthesizers at all, you can create pretty decent approximations with just about any softsynth as well. whatever works best for you, man. -
haha hahahahaha HAHAHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHA HAHAHA thank you sir, you just made my day. possibly my month.
