JAMSpace at MAGFest 6 (Organizational Thread)
suzumebachi replied to Escariot's topic in General Discussion
Especial thanks to Dom and Drew and Noah and all the guys who got JAMSpace up off the ground and running. Excellent job, guys. -
sequenced music and live music are really not mutually exclusive, either. for example an artist might record a number of small phrases live, then sequence them together afterwards. this is particularly common in video game music, because the phrases can be re-used to preserve memory. in this case, how would you make the distinction as to whether or not it's live? i suppose it all depends on your definition of what live is, which can be pretty subjective. plus it's definitely not uncommon to mix together live instrumentation with sequenced stuff. this post makes a shitload of sense to me right now and i will check back on it tomorrow and see what it thinks or i think about it. man mozilla's spellcheck is awesome except it doesn't think shitload or spellcheck are words. SHITLOAD IS ONE WORD DAMNIT. i don't care what you say crap apparently damnit isn't a word either afk less thinky more drinky

the FFX song you're talking about, "The Sight of Spira" is definitely sequenced, albeit quite well.

An Ideal Euphemistic, or, OMG FREE MUSIC
suzumebachi replied to suzumebachi's topic in General Discussion
WARDRIVER is a netlabel hosted at ThaSauce for internet musicians in the VGM scene. It's basically just a place for folks to release their free works under a unified banner. An Ideal Euphemistic is Wardriver's first collective album, and as such is a showcase of some of the artists featured on the label, including Injury, PxFury, OverCoat, Skrypnyk, ILLiterate, Monobrow, and myself. TOTALLY not a planted question or a shill or anything! Also, look forward to more Wardriver releases in the future! And we'll probably have something to say and hopefully some CDs to give away at MAGFest. -
I'm proud to announce that Wardriver has finally unleashed its first collective album and second release, An Ideal Euphemistic, which features a number of VGM community artists. You can grab it for free RIGHT HERE. You can also visit the Wardriver hompy (which is still under construction) here. And if you haven't yet, you can also get the first Wardriver release, Tanasinn EP by OverCoat, here. Have a news post! Enjoy! Afk!

I wish I could bring my guitars or keyboards or something, but unfortunately I am flying and the airline told me that if I wanted to bring my guitars I would have to buy a second ticket (which I can't afford). -
you are not a man!

'Alternate Ending' is probably the best song I've heard this year.

Latency with MIDI Controllers
suzumebachi replied to Antipode's topic in Music Composition & Production
Oh, I strongly disagree. ASIO allows you to bypass all of the Windows bullshit audio stack nonsense (ie: KMixer) and interface directly with your sound card, reducing the overhead and total latency by a proverbial fuckton. Windows bullshit audio stack nonsense (KMixer) has an INHERENT latency of 30ms that CANNOT BE AVOIDED without the use of ASIO. Additionally, ASIO output is bit identical, whereas Windows bullshit audio stack nonsense (fucking KMixer) taints your signals. -
BEARDFEST eh? I'll grow some manly mutton chops or something. MUTHAFUCKAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaa

of course. OCR is by no means limited by genre. to find metal remixes though, it helps if you go by people who generally work in that style: Sixto SnappleMan Housethegrate Goat Ailsean Rize Game Over Ashane Norrin Radd Midee & Prozax CarboHydroM i'm probably missing quite a few. also, there's some other places in addition to OCR to get your fill of metal video game tunes: Dwelling of Duels - a monthly live instrument video game arrangement competition. it's not specifically metal, but a lot of the entrants generally turn out to be anyways. Metroid Metal - the home of stemage and the metroid metal project. there's also a number of video game cover bands. you can find a (very incomplete) listing of them here.

i'm in. also, bump.

don't waste your money on anything that isn't: MIDI capable at least 49 keys velocity/touch sensitive mod/pitch wheels are pretty much a necessity, BUT if you absolutely have to, you can live without them. you can't live without the stuff i mentioned above though.

i'd stick to realistic drum patterns for rock/pop stuff. or pretty much anything with an acoustic kit. my brain hemorrhages when i hear a tom, cymbal, and hi-hat at the same time. it's not that hard to just take out the hi-hat strike (or tom or whatever). but for electronic stuff, go fucking nuts. as far as actually coming up with drum patterns, it's not at all difficult once you understand how accents work. like others have mentioned, play along with your track either in your head, or tapping your fingers, banging on things, or whatever. unless you're rhythmically retarded (see: xerol) you should pretty much naturally be able to feel where the accents are. then build your pattern around these accents. the hard part is articulation and nuance and all those fun things, but that comes with time and experience.

I have no creativity, so instead I am having a contest.
