https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNTwYzoFzck Here is the source; the melody in question starts at 0:27. Our arrangement blends post-rock and progressive rock influences, and will feature this melody prominently in the first half of the song. The mix isn't quite ready for a public demo but if you PM Hank or myself then we will accommodate you!

Double Dragon - Title Theme & Mission Screen
LongBoxofChocolate replied to Slimy's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This song doesn't have any horns in it, but there is this other remix I made with a horn focus, but I want to make sure that arrangement is up to snuff before I start collaborating. I think Hank was referring to winds in general (for Double Dragon). That being said, I play french horn and would be willing to help out if you like. -
We are in the writing phases now and our concept artist is finishing up the cover. So...yes!

If only some other person (or group of people) was willing to undertake such a task...muhahahaha @HankTheSpankTankJankerson

OCR03282 - Super Mario 64 "Frosty Britches"
LongBoxofChocolate replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This was a purely stylistic choice; we were going for an Elvish-esque vibe to complement the rock'n'roll feel. I suspect it would have blended more smoothly with better panning and a fuller rhythm section, but we wanted to keep this tune relatively simple and decided to stick with it. -
OCR03282 - Super Mario 64 "Frosty Britches"

Thanks for the comments, everyone! We recorded this almost a full year ago (wow!), so we've already improved on a lot of what's being mentioned. It feels great to finally be contributing after following the site for so many years. I LOVE THIS ALBUM and I'd be lying if I said the encore didn't influence this track -
I'm not familiar with EWIs at all, but that square-ish tone is really neat. There's an important distinction to make here. I think the negativity you're describing is intended not for the cover itself, but for the claim that the cover is an original arrangement (when it is actually just a literal transcription for X instrument). You are not making this claim. Smooth, however, is: hence the trickle-down resentment for the guy who paints the biggest target. If you are meeting that criticism in the OCR forums, I would guess that it's because songs posted here are often perceived to be candidates for submission, even if you're just sharing a cover like this. It may seem like I'm arguing semantics, but I think there's a lot of bad vibes that are maybe misguided or aren't being expressed properly. Keep your head up!

Wow, thanks. This is gonna take some time to get through but I'd like to experiment and apply this as much as we can. We just started working on an album so it's really important to us that we achieve not only a better sound but also a more consistent sound. Don't be surprised if you see us in the project forums come January...

Hmm I should clarify. What I'm referring to mainly is the melody at 1:39 and the harmonized arpeggios at 3:09. That synth is an essential part of the tune, but is probably the driest in the whole track and we felt that it was right to give it more of an analog flavor. Which leads me back to my question: what parts do you find to be disjointed? I have my suspicions but I think an outside ear is just as (if not more) useful in this situation.

He's still waiting on approval, so I'll answer the best I can in the meantime... The drums are outfitted with a pair of stereo condensers (Rode NT5s?) as overheads, SM57 on the snare, and something on the kick and toms that I can't remember. Which instruments seemed out of place to you? I will concede that the synth leads are a little dry compared to the rest of the mix, but that was mostly intentional: any wetter and I'd be losing clarity in the more technical parts. Something else to note is that ALL the wind parts are doubled, but the guitars are not.

Thanks, I'll pass this along to our drummer/sound guy. Currently we've got all the live instruments running through physical pre-amps and software plugins in Protools, but he could go into more detail about that. To my knowledge, the drums are equipped with a gate and compressor, but no limiter. I'll ask him to make an account.

Thank you both for your comments! To be honest, we've been struggling with bass frequencies and compression since day one. I think a lot of it can be attributed to our recording space...we're still in the process of trying to outfit the room for more accurate monitoring. Do you have any tips for dealing with this specifically? We must have bounced 4 or 5 iterations of the song with different bass levels to try and dial in a reasonable balance.

Hey everyone. This is my band's take on the ever-popular Dragon Roost Island. We believe it is a fresh approach to a tune that has probably been covered to death, so hopefully you enjoy it as much as we do. As always, the vast majority of instruments were recorded live, including the ocean drums! We also just overhauled our hardware setup, so any production critiques are more than welcome. Thanks for listening! source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWq53IFXVQ

Thanks for being so prompt! I'll pass this along to the others to see what they think. We actually had a lot of problems with this...earlier bounces sounded like the compressor was swallowing the entire track in that chorus section. I think we managed to salvage most of it this time, but we still seem to have trouble keeping the sound intact when transitioning from studio-quality monitors to normal computer speakers and headphones. Can you offer any advice for dealing with that specifically?

finished Super Mario 64: Cool Cool Mountain
LongBoxofChocolate replied to LongBoxofChocolate's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Thanks for the comment, friend. IIRC, the strategy for panning this song was sort of an experiment. I can certainly see how it could be a little too polarizing without enough parts to fill the rest of the sonic space. That being said, I think our recent arrangements have improved enough to where this isn't really an issue anymore. Cheers! -
finished Super Mario 64: Cool Cool Mountain

Hey everyone. My band would like to get feedback about this track, specifically with regards to production. Thanks! Soundcloud (higher quality): https://soundcloud.com/longboxofchocolate/cool-cool-mountain-frosty-britches music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEgRZd05JrQ -
So we finally loaded the project back up and gave it a fresh coat of paint. I think it's a substantial improvement. OP: Hey everyone, this is a track my band submitted for judging early June. Since it's likely we won't hear back for several more weeks (months?), I was hoping to gather some feedback so that we can further improve our sound moving forward. As with all of our completed tracks to date, we have used as many live instruments as possible and all solos are improvised. Thanks! We'll be submitting it within the week (probably...)
