  1. When I saw the title of this thread and who was posting it, I wasn't sure if you would mention this one. I'm reeeaaally hoping I can make RAGFest for Saturday. The Lord Machino crew is rad so that whole party sounds like it's going to be a total blast(unfortunately I'm missing the "Swelling of Jewels" listening party which is sure to be epic/hilarious). If I'm around we will grab some beers for sure
  2. Thanks I'm glad you liked it It's pretty much just a proof of concept tech thing. I thought it would be cool to do. I was basically working on a tutorial on how to play music over the phone in general, and then I decided to give OCR some love when I was trying to figure out what music to use as an example.
  3. YESSSSSS! Already a few tracks in and loving it so far. Nearly died when I refreshed the page and actually saw an update. 12% downloaded so far on the torrent. I'll be seeding all day after it's done.
  4. I am still debating whether I should listen to this at work or not because I know that I will get absolutely nothing done if I do...not sure if I can contain myself! Still refreshing the page every 5 minutes haha.
  5. Ah I haven't seen 8 Bit Theater in YEARS. Now I have to go re-read the entire comic and hope it is still just as funny. Anyway I'm beyond excited for this. I will be listening to it ALL DAY at work tomorrow and probably for the rest of the week! Any ideas on what time of day the album will drop? Or is that a surprise(or for maximum branding potential going with 9 o clock)?
  6. I seriously think this is a pretty genius approach to a tune that has been done a million times. Still comes out sounding funky fresh.
  7. Soooooo excited for this I booked an executive suite immediately when I found out that rooms went on sale. I was walking down 5th ave in Manhattan on my way home from work, and I busted out my laptop, tethered to get Internet and booked that shit right away! So in other words, I will definitely be there and would love for any of you to swing by and hangout/party/play video games with the crew that I am bringing.
  8. OMGOMGOMGOMG It's actually coming out! Should have figured an appropriate date would be chosen
  9. This is so AWESOME! I was stoked when this was announced because Spectrum of Mana had such a high quality lineup of musicians. I'm guessing this means Chrono Trigger will be getting even more love than usual at the next MAGFest
  10. Hey there. This is actually my first thread on the forums tl;dr: Call (347) 826-3536 to hear "Guile's Theme Goes with Metal" over the phone. I'm a developer evangelist at a company called Twilio, and I recently wrote a tutorial blog post on how to programmatically play music over the phone with some JavaScript. The example I used as the song to play over a phone call was the Guile's Theme Goes with Metal remix by Shinray. There's a nice shoutout to OCR at the end of the section where I describe how to set things up. I thought maybe some of you would appreciate the idea of being able to call a phone number and hear Guile's Theme. Even if playing music over the phone does result in pretty low quality, I think there's some novelty value in there. If any of you are developers or wanted to set something like this up with other remixes, the code wouldn't be very involved and is all explained in my post. You can check it out here: https://www.twilio.com/blog/2015/08/playing-tunes-over-the-phone-with-the-twilio-nodejs-library-in-es6.html Let me know if you have any comments or questions
  11. I was just thinking to myself yesterday "I need a physical copy of Balance and Ruin" Perfect timing
  12. Awesome stuff! This was definitely one of the better tunes on B&R(actually all of XPRTNovice's remixes on there are great pretty much). Really digging the Django-esque parts. "You'd be surprised at what can be accomplished in five minutes in a hotel room at MAGFest!!" That needs to happen.
  13. It totally blows my mind that it's been 15 years since FF9 came out. It's definitely my favorite soundtrack of all of the FF games(and one of Nobuo's too apparently ) so I can't wait for this album to come out! Shame that it's taking so long, but with such an ambitious project I can see why that is. Hopefully it will actually be able to get out there by the 15th anniversary!
  14. I'm seeing a lot of power metal fans in here. Cool! I haven't been heavily into power metal since around high school. Nowadays I still jam on the traditional stuff like Helloween and early Blind Guardian. I guess my go to is more the stuff that doesn't usually have keyboards. I really dig the stuff that is at the intersection of power metal, thrash and traditional heavy metal. One of my favorites is the German band Paradox. They are more talked about in the thrash scene, but their style was closer to what German power metal bands were putting out compared to the Teutonic thrash bands at the time doing more raw and "evil" sounding stuff like Kreator and Sodom. Heresy is a really sick album. Also a big fan of the traditional USPM bands that play the style I described earlier. Like Sanctuary! I was pretty stoked to hear that they got back together, but Warrel Dane can't do those falsettos at all anymore! I managed to catch them in Seattle about 2 years ago though. They happened to be playing the weekend I visited, which was cool. And of course there's stuff like Iced Earth, but that was mentioned previously.
  15. I remember after I played Ocarina of Time, I heard about Majora's Mask and a few of my friends who were Zelda fans didn't like it as much. I didn't bother playing it initially, but a few years later another friend of mine left his MM cart at my house. I decided to play through it, and LOVED the game. He wound up leaving a ton of other games at my house too including some pretty awesome SNES carts like Earthbound(!), Secret of Evermore, and Contra 3. We stopped hanging out after he got into heavy drugs, and then he never asked me for the games back.
  16. Yeah man! I love that tone. That's a great amp! The other guitarist in my old band had a 6505, and I loved messing around on it. Ah I was pissed to catch them on that tour with Symphony X on pretty much the only date where they DIDN'T play Dante's Inferno. My buddy who saw them in Philly told me Dante's Inferno was in the set, and that was the entire reason I went to the show pretty much. Such an awesome tune! I was also really lucky to be able to see Iced Earth do one last show in NYC with Matt Barlow on vocals a few years back. That was one I will never forget! Anyway! Are there any Cynic fans in the house? I feel like a lot of people on here would dig them. Paul Masvidal is one of my favorite guitarists, and I always thought the combination of him and Sean Reinert on drums was perfect. Here's a track from their "classic" album, Focus. They started off as one of the first technical death metal bands(at least I'd say their demo stuff could be called death metal), but changed it up quite a bit and became way more straight up prog over the years. The occasional "robot-like" vocoder vocals annoy some people, but that solo at the end is beautiful! Here's some of their newer stuff. They pretty much abandoned death metal, but still managed to retain their overall style. As much of a fan I am of traditional death metal, I LOVE their modern stuff, and think it fits their playing styles. It's definitely a step up in creativity from most bands out there. And speaking of Masvidal and Reinert, they were in a band called Death as well. Death might just be my all time favorite band since I love every era of their career(I really dig the early, raw death metal stuff as well as the more melodic progressive stuff they did later on). It's a shame Chuck Schuldiner died I think this album(Human) had a pretty perfect lineup with the aforementioned dudes from Cynic as well as Steve Digiorgio on bass! And of course I love their later progressive stuff too!
  17. Yeah I'm pretty sure GT is considered non canon since Toriyama wasn't really involved with it. I'd hope they just ignore GT and let the series progress without worrying about keeping true to that storyline. Cool stuff though! I don't care how generic and played out Dragonball got. I would still watch a new series just out of curiosity haha.
  18. Slayer will always win on riffs! Captor of Sin is a pretty intense tune. I don't think anybody mentioned Jason Becker yet. He's an insanely good guitarist from the 80's who got ALS and was rendered unable to play It's a really sad story because he was so talented. He did an album with Marty Friedman(guitarist of Megadeth) called Speed Metal Symphony, and there is a ton of crazy shredtastic stuff on that one. It's really neo-classical. This is him and Marty Friedman dual shredding. (Check out ~1:56 for maximum feels). And hey while we're at it, why not throw in some pure Marty Friedman? His solo on Tornado of Souls was brilliant! It isn't the single most complicated solo ever, but the guy really knew how to tie a song together. The story goes that he just went into the studio and improvised that solo in one take, which is kind of cool. The solo starts at 3:09. It's a shame Dave Mustaine is such an ass! I'd really like to hear Marty back on stage again.
  19. Yeah that's what it's all about! I think By Inheritance(the whole album) is pretty much a masterpiece. The riffs are insane! I sometimes get burned out on thrash, but that one will never get old to me. The vocals are very likely influenced by Dio to some extent. Once I get around to actually doing some remixes on here, I'll do one in a style similar to Artillery riff-wise. I think that would be pretty rad! I noticed some talk of melodic death metal in here too(and Nase mentioned checking out In Flames). Not sure what era of In Flames you checked out, but if you dig their older stuff then you should definitely check out some At The Gates! Slaughter of the Soul is a pretty well liked album among fans, and is pretty iconic when it comes to melodeath. I'd expect a lot of people to have heard this one anyway, but check it out if you haven't Oh also another one of my favorites is Carcass! I'm a huuuge fan of their grind/death metal stuff(on Necroticism and Symphonies of Sickness), but if you're into melodeath at all, you'll love Heartwork! It's a pretty kick ass album, and has a bunch of awesome riffage. It's usually mentioned that this was the album that pretty much invented the style. It's much different than Carcass' earlier stuff, but I still dig it. It's like intense thrash/death metal riffs with a good amount of melody thrown into it. That is some awesome stuff too! The vocals also remind me of Artillery, so the "screamy version of Dio" is starting to gain even more credibility haha. This one also kind of reminds me of Agent Steel's modern output. I think Omega Conspiracy was a pretty good comeback album, and that Nightmare track made me think of this for some reason. Their earlier stuff sounded like a crazy, faster version of Judas Priest though. Insanely high pitched vocals haha.
  20. Definitely going to +1 Paul Gilbert. He's easily one of my favorites! And those faces he makes are the best. Another one of my favorites is Guthrie Govan. He's insanely good, but also has a pretty diverse style. He can shred like a maniac, but he also keeps a level of musicality, and doesn't overdo it like some other shred guitarists a'la Yngwie Malmsteen(as much as Yngwie rules). Here's the video that introduced me to his music: And here is one that is a little more funky/Jazzy:
  21. Yo! Huge metalhead here, so it's cool to see this as the first post right after I made an account Hollenthon is some pretty cool stuff. I haven't listened to them very much, but I dig how they mix the symphonic elements with actually good riffage. Too many bands fail to do that. It sort of reminds me of some of Therion's stuff. The vocals sometimes remind me of Dark Tranquility too. Anyway, if you're looking for some metal recommendations for bands you might not have checked out, you should try listening to the thrash band Artillery! It isn't similar in any way to what you posted, but people have generally been pretty favorable when I recommended them in the past. You said you used to listen to thrash though, so maybe you've already heard them. The vocals are vaguely operatic with some grit to them, and the riffs are just technical enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5nl4P4CUkI
